Things I can do from bed: buy remaining baby stuff online, pay bills.

Just wrote out the check for our tax bill. Ouch.

Used my Amazon 15% baby registry discount to get over $100 of of stuff. Win. Now I just need to write out a polite note for the delivery guy to please not leave everything on our doorstep where the pregnant lady can't lift it.

Attempted to use the BRU gift card I got from someone to stock up on preemie diapers (because twins) - and they don't have them!!! WTF. And of course this is after I redeemed my Amazon discount. You're fired, Babies R Us.

Edit: Gift card amount: $70.00 BRU total with discount: $70.09

@ladysamlady That is so cute!! My H has a beard; I will have to tell him what that might mean for baby recognition! I love beards on men, btw. In fact, I convinced DH to grow a beard pre-wedding and he said okay but was planning on shaving before the wedding. But he looked so good he kept it!

ETA: I'd love a link to what your DH read. I just googled but it was a lot of funny videos/stories about little kids *not* recognizing their dads after they shaved their beards...

  • My random thing of the day: MIL gifted us a Costco membership. I've never been to a Costco before. We went yesterday and I got completely overwhelmed and was like "Get me outta here!" Costco veterans: What is the best way to approach/shop at Costco? Also, we went on Sunday afternoon, which was maybe a mistake?

  • @vinerie @ladysamlady Loving the beard conversation. I prefer DH with a short/trimmed beard and he usually has one most of the year, but randomly decided a week or two ago to shave it off. He asked DS if he should and DS told him, "no, don't," and was visibly disappointed that he did it anyway. He's growing it back now though (which will only take a week likely). I'll have to tell him the research so he considers keeping it for DS2.
  • @vinerie We usually only get things at Costco that we use often. For example, a box full of cans of Rotel would be useful for me because I use that ish allllll the time in recipes (Rotel is basically spicy diced tomatoes...I like to use a 1/3 to 1/2 a can to give my Mac and Cheese a kick, for example). Or certain cleaning supplies that I go through really quickly, etc (with four pets in the house I really like to stock up on the febreze). One thing I never do when going in is to shop without a list...it's very easy to buy a bunch of stuff in bulk you think you'll use, but then never do. We also go there to stock up on basic supplies like paper towels, TP, etc, so we don't have to worry about picking it up again any time soon.

Maybe think of Costco less as one big overwhelming shopping trip, and more of as a once a month or so supplementary stop that enables you to shop for less stuff the rest of the time.

Also, yes, Saturday's/Sunday's can be pretty crazy out here. If you can only go during the weekend, try to go in the mornings while everybody else is sleeping in/at church...might be a slightly less overwhelming crowd that way...

@vinerie Oh! And I also break down parts of the trip/list by time. I don't need to pick up a pack of toothbrushes every time I go, for example, but maybe every 3-6 months I need to make a stop in the personal hygiene section for that reason (depending on the amount in the package I select and how quickly I go through them, of course). That's probably about the same time I'll need more toothpaste/body wash/etc. And once a year, DH stocks up on pens/pencils/etc because by that point we are usually scrambling to find any around the house.

It's overwhelming at first, but you eventually begin to figure out what you do and don't need to really stock up on. I think someone I know actually did the math - cost-wise, it's most effective when you're stocking up on non-perishables - but I tend to measure it in convenience, because I hate shopping in general and if it saves me time during my regular grocery trips then I am all for it. :P

  • Even though I only have 5 weeks left, I went ahead and bought two pairs of maternity jean shorts at Target yesterday morning. I figured I could use them post baby. They were my first Target maternity purchase, and after shopping at Pea in Pod for most of my maternity gear, I felt like I was committing a crime with how much more affordable they were. And the best part is I didn't totally hate how my legs looked in them. I have some big ol thighs right now, but they are still pretty muscular. I'm hoping I can use them post baby as well while I'm patiently waiting for my body to go back to something that isn't pregnant with baby.

@PYLWhammy Such an adorable pup! Happy birthday to her! :)

Nursery painting is FINALLY getting started today. Since DH has to do it throughout the work week it's happening one wall at a time, but idc! Said wall for this evening is already taped and ready to go. :)
  • @PYLWhammy HBD, Molly!  My girl is a Molly, too.
  • @vinerie @kbrands7 So I asked my H for his sources. He told me that our teacher mentioned it in our newborn care class (I don't remember it) and that when he researched it himself he found all the stuff about babies not recognizing their dads after they shaved. So he deduced that babies recognize beards. He also found that newborn babies see contrasting colors (like black and white) at first and so he figures having a dark beard would create a contrast on his face. So... not exactly science. I pointed out that he wears dark framed glasses that she might recognize too but he is pretty stuck on the beard thing.

Ah, the beard. My DH stopped shaving when he found out I was pregnant. He calls it his "baby beard". It is incredibly long now, and although I thought it was cute at first, now I just find he looks unkempt. He's only planning on shaving about a week before the due date, so I get to look at that unruly thing in our maternity pics for the rest of my life :|

  • Woke up early this morning and debated getting out of bed and getting a head start on the day, instead went on etsy and bought way too many headbands for LO and made a list of other ones to buy her. She has a basket full already and I know that most likely she won't even keep them on her head but they're so cute I can't stop buying them
  • @vinerie... rookie mistake, going on a Sunday ;)

We don't belong to Costco, but do belong to BJs. We use our membership for cat food (I know you have a dog), toiletries like soap and shampoo. SOOOO much cheaper than the drugstore. We also get frozen meals we can just toss in the oven during the week, and plan on stocking up for my ML. I wouldn't suggest it for produce, baked goods, or anything else you cant eat 72 of in a week before it goes bad. Plan to spend about an hour a visit for shopping and checking out, and another hour to unpack your goodies. I am not a fan of the membership clubs for any food that spoils, but do think we get our moneys worth just in the amount we save on cat food and litter every month.

I personally think Costco is mostly a waste of time unless you have a BIG family. Their food is extremely packaged so you throw away a lot of wrapping. We go for major home things (for example, we get our light bulbs and batteries there) and for home appliances. Otherwise they're usually not any less expensive than anything else.
Go to Costco with a specific idea of what you wanna buy and only get that. If you deviate you can end up spending $200 on like six things.
the food court is good though!
  • @yogahh I've always wondered how people who live in the city manage wholesale shopping without a car.  How do you get your loot home??
  • @vinerie I don't have a Costco membership but my boss swears by their diapers and wipes (Kirkland signature brand).

Truer words were never spoken.  Costco on a Sunday afternoon is terrifying.
  • @vinerie I don't have a Costco membership but my boss swears by their diapers and wipes (Kirkland signature brand).
My mom has heard that from multiple people! She keeps telling me to go to Costco to get our disposables and I keep having to tell her they don't sell our brands (babyganics and seventh generation) and we're going cloth anyway!
  • @vinerie I don't have a Costco membership but my boss swears by their diapers and wipes (Kirkland signature brand).
My FIL got us 2 boxes of Kirkland diapers and they are great!

Also...I remember reading something about keeping your appearance the same so that it is easier for the baby to distinguish who you are...because they can only see so far. I wanted to wear my hair down about 2 weeks after DS was born but that popped into my head and I put it back up--I was a bit extreme...but I see where the beard thing is coming from! (I also don't remember where I read this sorry!)
  • DH and I love costco. We go for the meat, fruit and TP. So much cheaper than the regular grocery store. Also have heard good things about the Kirkland diapers/wipes, was told it was the way to go!

My H is being a bit ridiculous about the beard thing now because I think he just realized he might not want a beard for the duration of LO's infancy but he really wants her to recognize him as quickly as possible. We talked about it this morning and then out of the blue he just texted me, "I just wish they knew more about baby sight!"
I'm sure that sight plays into it, but there's also a lot to be said for sound and scent. Even from the first week, DS would look at DH or I if we were talking while he was awake, and he would more or less ignore everyone else until he got to know them. DS also definitely recognized my scent (probably milk scent primarily) and as he got older and started crying for "mumumumum" as early as 4 months, if DH tried to go to him even in the middle of the night when he couldn't see who was coming into the room, he would pause, take a breath in and resume crying. If I walked in, he'd start to settle. We were able to ease up some of his sleep separation anxiety too by having me wear a t-shirt for a few nights straight, then stashing the shirt under his crib mattress.

Your husband is making me laugh! I can't wait to share his conclusions about beards with mine tonight.

Mine has a fairly manicured beard. It's short. He uses the No. 3 shaver, whatever that means. Over the winter he used No. 4 I think and it was a bit longer. We like this hipster bar in town and even though my H is not a "hipster," whenever we go I always point out that he fits right in :-P

This is what my DH does too! He always jokes about letting it grow mountain-man length, but the texture gets wiry when it's longer and he doesn't look professional enough, so he keeps it short. It's perfect like that.

I agree with @kbrands7. If he really wants her to recognize him right after birth then he would probably have better luck talking to your belly so she will recognize his voice. Although she'll probably already immediately recognize his voice just from him being around and talking to you!

DD was a daddy's girl from day 1. She could always distinguish him from everyone else and I'm assuming that was by his scent. His beard comes and goes and it's never affected her recognizing him. He usually lets it grow out a little but has to shave completely once a month for drill.

Also, tell him that she'll probably end up being a complete daddy's girl eventually, so if she prefers you for a few days then that's okay too!

This is all hilarious for some reason. As you guys know, DH won't be home until baby is 8/9 months old and he's SUPER afraid of the baby "not knowing" him. We have recorded DH reading books, saying prayers, etc so that I can play them for the baby in hopes those will help the transition once DH gets home. Regardless, I've told DH it's going to be a huge transition for them both when he gets home and meets his son or daughter and when they meet their dad for the first time, but it'll happen. He then made some comment along the lines of him wishing he could meet LO right at the birth because at 8 or 9 months he or she will be big enough to be judgmental and he doesn't want them using anything against him from the get go? Wtf? Men are so weird sometimes.
  • MEH!!!!

I just found out that my OB is going to be out of town for the ENTIRE month of May! This after she assured me a few weeks ago that she always schedules herself to be on call when her patients are due.

And she she didn't even tell me! I found out when the receptionist tried to schedule my appointments for the next three weeks.

Ugh. I still like her, but how is this not something you tell your patients????
  • Have also heard great things about Kirkland wipes. They're the ones we're choosing to use. When you look at reviews they're well rated and free of some the regular chemical stuff people get worried about. I plan to try out their diapers at some stage too because I have also heard they're very decent.
