This thread is giving me a fucking headache. I think I'll go down a fifth of whiskey to alleviate it because my grandma drank during her entire pregnancy and her kids turned out fine so fuck science, am I right?
For sure, you'll be fine as long as your grandma did because it's in your DNA for that to not effect you as much as it would for some others (what in the actual fuck?) if you have any hard drugs you should probably start doing them too because this one time, a girl I knew from highschool years did lots of drugs and delivered a normal baby.
In all fairness for as many negative stories as people can pull out others can pull out stories that offset it....
My dad died of lung cancer ya know the kind we blame asbestos for not smoking, I've seen people in their 90's still puffing away and others who smoked for decades and as soon as the quit they began getting sick and yet they still made it to their 80's.... I've seen complete health buffs die of cancer even though they followed all of sciences "rules"... so while I agree smoking does not help and can play a role in illness not sure if you approach is all that "scientific " either... the reality is our bodies are complex and our weaknesses within our body tends to be hidden among the DNA that makes us individuals and this is too complex to make any type of actual scientific fact based off of a thousand folks... we can only comment on perceived dangers based on groups of people...
This is why we have to make choices based off our individual beliefs and others should be careful.... I mean if you have seen that many in your family die from what you perceive cigarette related then your best choice would be protect your family... you share their dna... hence family history impacts medical future in most cases. But keep in mind if high blood pressure and strokes run in my family and kills people but smoking seems to not be as life threatening then my focus will be doing things to offset that first because it's more of a danger to me and my family....
You can't use your scary stories to persuade others to do what is bed for your family... fear driven change never last...
My grandfather had his first major heart attack at 47. He had 3 more, along with a double and quadruple bypass, before he passed away from a massive heart attack when I was 12. His doctors said his heart problems were most likely caused by his smoking and I have been vehemently anti-smoking since then so maybe I'm a bit biased but here it goes. 3rd hand smoke is not a laughing matter. There have been reputable links posted here to world renowned medical groups showing this but apparently none of that matters since anecdotes are the best evidence so I'll play that game.
H's father smoked when he was a baby, never in the house, never around his kids. H just got back from the pharmacy yesterday with an albuterol inhaler and singulair to go with his advair inhaler because of his bad asthma. If he doesn't use all of those, he turns into a wheezing mess and struggles to breathe once pollen starts to come out. He had weekly nebulizer treatments as a kid because his lungs were so craptastic. His father quit smoking between him and his 2 younger brothers and guess who only has very mild asthma, asthma that is manageable without meds? Both of his brothers which could be attributable to the fact that they weren't exposed to 3rd hand smoke coming off of their father's clothes.
@mebaby333, if you would be comfortable sending your child to that daycare, more power to you, but saying that those who are concerned are overreacting isn't fair. Everyone has different concerns when it comes to their kids and that's a great thing about being a parent, you get to make such decisions. No one is basing their decisions on fear. They're basing their decision on medical evidence that being around smoke is harmful. Would you say that removing lead based paint from the market was a "fear based change" too?
ETA because I took too freaking long typing this whole thing out and the thread exploded - Ditto to the GMO and artificial sweetner comments, I wasn't even going to touch on those but I love that so many of the regulars here understand how science works. June '16 ladies, you're freaking awesome and make me so incredibly happy.
Guys, just start buying GMO-free cigarettes. They're safe to smoke around kids for sure. Relax!
Totally rushing to the store to spend our entire paycheck on cartons of those bad boys. Maybe I can pick up some leaded paint, too....I'll just make sure my kids stop licking the walls.

For real! I'm kicking myself for spending $60k completely gutting and renovating my entire house to rid it of lead and asbestos. That's so much money I could have spent on non gmo ciggs.

I was stating things I experienced and suggestions not being rude and throwing f bombs at people about smoking or people gurgling... also fairly certain I said in previous posts that some could be found just admonishing her not to just use the one standard...
Read my posts in their entirety I express that each choice for our family is based off of our own perceptions. .. I didn't embellish the reality of what was occurring by using colorful words meant to cause some fear...

ETA: The problem, though, is that anecdotes and personal experience don't rise to the level of universal fact in the face of peer-reviewed medical knowledge (fact), wherein these facts are not "colorful words meant to cause fear".

What the actual fuck is people gurgling? Is that safe during pregnancy?

You don't seem to get it. It isn't using colorful words to cause fear. 3rd hand smoke has been shown with legitimate scientific studies to be detrimental to the health of young children (well, probably everyone, but young children are of particular interest to this discussion). Coming in with anecdotes and "so-and-so did it and was totally fine" is basically saying, yeah, I see your science facts and disagree.

^Totally a GMO laden tot but I don't care because I understand that genetic engineering of foods is virtually identical to crop/animal hybridization (which has been done for ages) and takes a fraction of the time. Yay science!
Eta- the new GMO potatoes that I believe were cleared not long ago actually produce LESS acrylamide when fried, and acrylamide is potentially harmful to humans in high doses. They also don't bruise as easily which means less waste. Just saying...
While I understand that not everyone who smokes or ingest second or third hand smoke gets cancer, asthma or other illnesses that are proven to have been caused by cigarettes or cigarette smoke, wouldn't you want your child to avoid it at all costs? Shouldn't we do better as we know better?
This one time, my friend smoked marijuana. And her kid was so beautiful. I want to jump in @ahernandez16 car with @MamaNicoleof3, and let's keep the windows up as we smoke some really good pot. I want all the pretty babies.
Yes, my main concern is third hand smoke if she works with the children. That's a deal breaker for me even though everything else at the daycare seems perfect. We visited the daycare in the morning before a lot of children were there. I'm going to see if I can go during the afternoon and ask the smoking questions (while trying to not come of as rude, I'm so non confrontational!). I feel like it's going to be so awkward to ask her. Like "so, I notice you smell like smoke, do you ever work with the infants?" Or should I just ask her something more general about smoking policy with employees??

Unrelated, but out of curiosity, how did you find out your house had led and asbestos and what did you do to mitigate it?

Maybe you could go around pick up time too and talk to some parents?

Funny (not funny at all) story-
We bought the house which was previously a rental and deemed safe because of the legalities of renting a home to a family with young children ( 3 young kids lived there and mother was pregnant). The owners signed a no knowledge of lead as well. So we do a full 4 hour inspection ( FYI they don't cover lead or asbestos) and buy the home. flash forward 3 weeks, we get a letter in the mail from an attorney representing the family who lived there before us and every single one of their children have lead poisoning! I shit my pants and schedule a lead test that day for my 9 month old, we go, his lead level test is 42 (should never be over 5 in the state of ma), we have a secondary intravenous test and it comes back at 23 - still very very very high but at least he doesn't have to live in a hospital on an IV. State had to get involved because it's mandatory with lead levels that high. We found out the sellers (also our next door neighbors!) knew about the lead poisoning in all of the children including the baby that was in utero MONTHS before signing the no knowledge of lead and selling us the house (which my 9 month old was sitting on my lap during the closing where they looked us in the eye and signed all closing documents). So I move out with my son the day I find out. Take out a shit ton of loans and start renovating my house last Jan. It's almost done now. So it's been over a year. You need a private lead inspection ($300-500) to identify where the lead is and can do one for asbestos too, then you need a professional to rid of it. You can do some small parts yourself if you take a one day lead course but can't really do much. We ended up gutting the house where we found asbestos floors under the lead painted floors, asbestos pipes and know and tubing wiring. We replaced everything so theoretically other than the shell of the house, every single thing is brand new
@alysemciver- that sounds like the worst nightmare. Do you have any recourse from the sellers???
They have 2 lawsuits besides ours that left them completely bankrupt of all money and property. The first one is the other family who they poisoned and the second is the husband is guilty of vehicular homocide which happened the month we closed.. Soooo we haven't decided what we're going to do yet. I don't want to spend 6 grand on a lawyer for nothing. We are looking into it though
@alysemciver What a horrible situation for you to have to deal with! I can't even imagine! Are there legal repercussions for them knowingly lying on the documents? What awful people!

Omg that's absolutely terrible. I'm glad your son didn't need to be hospitalized.

Soooooooooo douchey.
You know what this calls for??
Don't worry - they are made with non-gmo potatoes. Only $9.99 a bag, but I can afford that since I don't send my kid to daycare.
