Re: Random Thoughts Thread

  • I just have to say you guys are the best and I really really appreciate you and what we have here in our community.

@sporty1216 I'm sending you a link to the oil in your PM- just wanted to make sure it didn't get lost in space, they really need a better notification system for PM on here!

  • Thanks! I am almost exclusively mobile, so I don't get notifications at all really! I'll go check my inbox now.

and, as always, I second how much I love this community. I especially love how supportive it is whether a poster is a regular or is just popping by for some advice in a moment of stress. Truly grateful.
  • Seriously just had THE meal I have been craving: awesome pub salad and beer cheese soup from my favorite local brew pub. Oh. My. Gosh.
  • Okay--one more. Anyone else dealing with sciatic nerve pain? I remember having it with my son, but not this early. Any tips or tricks for dealing with it? @createillumination or @lillebowski23 ? It hurts and makes it tough to walk sometimes. Or to turn over in bed if I happen to aggravate it. I also have a weird popping sensation in my lower back. Creeping me out.
  • Sadly were speaking the same language @sporty1216 :( my sciatica is terrible.  I had it the last couple weeks with my son, but I'm 26 weeks and it started full force. I'm 'ok' in the am but can barely move as the day goes on. I bought the KT tape that sports players wear and it's helped a little, along with a heating pad. But now sleep is harder then it was. Last night I moved to the couch, turned on my side, backed my back up so it was right against the back of the couch, pillow between my legs. I'm going to see a chiropractor Thursday, I'll let you know how it goes. I'll take any tips from you smart ladies too! Say a prayer for my fetal echo tomorrow ladies, anxious tonight.

  • I'm sorry you're dealing with it too, @Wyattnash00 ! Good to know re: the tape..:

will definitely pray for your fetal echo too. And that you can get some sleep tonight. Let us know how it goes!

OMG @Sporty1216 I have so had sciatica the past couple of days. That is so strange we both have it! The chiropractor helped mine a lot and i have been experimenting with putting a little lift under the opposite hip while seated or laying down and that makes sitting better. I'm using a bigger pillow between my knees while I sleep.

We have a wooden rolling pin that i roll over my
gluts and down the side of the leg which seamed to help. I'll go see my acupuncturist soon which i know will be good.

The thing that seemed to provide the best relief was I taught my DH how to fire cup me and I had him do it on my butt where I felt a concentration of pain. Fire cupping is so easy I'm sure you can learn how on youtube. It's a Chinese medicine thing an acupuncturist can
    do it for you too.

Ack sorry for those of us with the pains in the butt!

@wyattnash00 all the good luck tmrw! T&P and FX!
  • @Sporty1216, good luck for your fetal echo, and hope you feel better soon with the aches and pains
  • Just wanted to say how much I love this group as I don't feel completely alone, trying to figure out being pregnant at this juncture in my life...
i didn't know there was something known as sciatica nerve pain, and if you girls hadn't pointed it out I wouldn't have an explanation of why my butt hurts right down to my heel...so thank you once again for being a supportive group of women and taking time out to read random posts by someone like me, a complete stranger from another country
  • Sorry @Sporty1216 I thought you were having a fetal echo...pregnancy brain lol
  • @Sporty1216 sciatica can be caused by a number of things in the low back. I definitely recommend chiropractic  treatment. Also, giving yourself adequate lumbar support is crucial. If you have a long commute like me, get something for your car to support your low back (a rolled towel or blanket will do!) I would also recommend some simple core exercises once your pain decreases. There are several you can do early on that will be okay for you and baby, duch as standing crunches or bird dog (Google these and "pregnancy, and you'll find a couple if good instructional videos) also if you get chiropractic, ask what exercises they recommend.

    Good luck!
  • No problem, @krupali78 ! @Wyattnash00 and @lillebowski23 have the echos today. :)

Also, it sounds like a lot of us are dealing with sciatica! It's not fun.  But at least we're not alone. After a good night's sleep, mine feels better, but it's still achy.  I'm going to try the lift idea today, @createillumination -- I have a bunch of skype interviews to do, so I'll be sitting more than usual. I'll have to look up the fire cupping too.  It sounds daring!

  • I had a herniated disc in my back for 6 months and after endless hoop jumping for insurance, was able to get surgery a little over a year ago (just AFTER my wedding--argh). My sciatic pain was so bad I could only stand for about two minutes at a time and my foot was always going numb. Grocery shopping was awful -- I'd have to bend over or crouch every two minutes to control the pain. Definitely sleep on your side with your knees bent and a pillow between them. And an ice pack on your upper butt area helps. I used a bag of frozen edamame during that awful 6 months.

Sorry for all of you with sciatic pain! I feel very lucky that I've been free from aches and pains entirely, now 27 weeks. I do make a point to stay very active, and my weight gain has been on the low end (not that I really feel like I have any control over that), so I think these two things are helping.

ETA: I also have a great massage therapist! I've been getting prenatal massages every 4 weeks or so.

Good luck with the echo @Wyattnash00!

  • @Wyattnash00@lillebowski23 good luck your echo test today
  • Good luck with the fetal echoes today, ladies! We have our level 2 ultrasound in a couple of hours and I'm a ball of nerves. No reason to think anything is wrong, but it's hard not to be nervous nonetheless.

Sciatica and and back pain in general is so tough - I've struggled with back and neck pain for years. Chiropractic care, ice, and lots of stretching help me. I know all three are harder once you're already in pain, but when you tackle these things between bouts, it seems to help prevent the worst attacks from coming. Good luck and feel better soon!
  • Good luck @Infantino22 and @lillebowsky23 I've got my FX for you!!!
  • Yay @lillebowski23!! Such a great feeling!

  • Hooray! Glad for the good echoes, @Wyattnash00 and @lillebowski23 ! Hope your anatomy scan went well too, @Infantino22
  • Hurray @lillebowski23! Great news! If anyone needs maternity clothes here's a gap coupon!
  • Here is my completely random post of the day - It has been storming here all day & it looks like it's not going to let up anytime soon. I have been craving broccoli cheese soup all day...and I just realized I have all the ingredients at home to make it so I don't even have to go to the store - yay! I can't wait until 5:00 gets here because my plans consist of 1). Immediately taking off my bra & pants when I walk in the door 2). Making said soup 3). Camping out on the couch to binge watch Orange is the New Black and 4). Possibly talking DH into a backrub. All of these things make me happy!
  • Soool glad the echoes went well! I also love the good food "reward" after. I'm only have a blood draw/counseling for the Harmony test today, but still plan to treat myself to Burgerville (local fast food place) on the way home. I've been thinking about it all day!
  • Thanks to all for the sciatica advice! I'm going to try your suggestions and hopefully find some relief!

I tried chiropractic a few months before getting pregnant. My first adjustment, I did fine. But when I went back for my second one, I got "fired" because I wouldn't let him do the twist-your-head to crack your back thing. Maybe I just need to find a different chiro. Or, @redheadbride15 , your prenatal massages sound pretty awesome. I may have to ask my OB and see if she can prescribe some massage therapy or something. Worth a shot, anyway!

  • @Wyattnash00 , @lillebowski23, so happy that your echo tests were great, and the food treat was satisfying:)
  • @Wyattnash00 and @lillebowski23 I'm so happy to hear that things went well for both of you with your fetal echoes!

@BernieRae Mmmmmm!!! Burgerville!!! I need to indulge in a Burgerville splurge before I give birth!
  • @Sporty1216 I definitely recommend the massage! Some chiropractors can be great but I'll be honest and say that some scare me. I've heard a few bad stories. I like that a massage therapist works with you to find things that you find helpful and comfortable. It's definitely worth asking your OB if you can get a script or ask your insurance if they cover it. Mine doesn't, so I pay out of pocket. It's totally worth it though!

yay for great echoes @Wyattnash00 and @lillebowski23!

  • I went to a chiropractor briefly and she injured my rib pretty badly. As she was working on me, I told her it didn't feel right and she laughed and said, "Look at you trying to get away!"

I had a personal trainer at the time and wasn't able to do a lot of exercises for 3 months afterwards, due to my injured rib. I was pretty mad.

  • Yikes, @CarrieandRoy ! My DH has gone to this chiro for a long time and loves him, but the fit was not there for me, for sure! His staff told me I didn't have to do anything I wasn't comfortable with and then the first time I say I'm not comfortable, he gets really mad and fires me! Yeah. Never setting foot in that particular office again.
  • @CarrieandRoy I have a few issues that I think would benefit from some quality chiropractic care, but stories like yours scare me! I am afraid of ending up worse off than before!
  • Re: chiropractors- I always like to tell people throw away the practitioner and not necessarily the medicine. This is so horrible to say but there are some people I went to acupuncture school with that I wouldn't let treat me if we were the last people on earth. So dramatic I know :# but that doesn't mean that there aren't some incredibly talented practitioners out there. I'm so sorry some of you have had some bad experiences that really sucks! Ask around for referrals and yelp reviews and word of mouth can really lead you to some talented people.  You should never have to feel uncomfortable when being treated, and your practitioner should always always trust your word and never do anything that is against your wishes.
  • @emgee27 that made me chuckle. "I'm here to report my cankles." lol :D

  • @emgee27 that made me chuckle. "I'm here to report my cankles." lol :D
I'm definitely trying to deal with it with humor!  For some reason I thought I'd escape the feet swelling since I had been doing so well, but it's been like this for the last 2 weeks off and on. Also, considering all the other body changes, I'm not sure why this one is the most shocking to me.

It's like I'm walking around on 2 loaves of sourdough. :(
  • First appt with an amazing chiropractor today, never been to one before and was very hesitant.  Was referred to her by 2 close friends, one who is also pregnant. I already feel 50%better, definitely ask around!

  • Oh, the cankles.... A sense of humor will definitely help! ;)

good words re: throwing away the practitioner and not the practice! I will try to keep an open mind, @createillumination ;)
  • @infantino22 awesome picture of the baby !!! Looks so comfortable

  • @Infantino22 Your ultrasound picture is so cool! I've never had a higher level ultrasound, but I love to see other people's. You get a pretty good idea of what the baby is going to look like, I think.
