Re: Random Thoughts Thread

  • @Sporty1216 sorry for your loss and the difficult feelings and memories it brings up. I understand how hard it can be to be so many miles away from family even if you're otherwise very happy to live where you are. I hope you're able to feel connected to your family at this time even if you can't physically be there ❤️

  • @Sporty1216, so sorry for your loss, will be praying for you
  • @Sporty1216 I'm so sorry about your grandma. It's so tough to lose people, no matter the age, and it makes it so much worse when you're far away. It's cliche to say "think about the good times" and "she'll be in your heart" when really, it just sucks... But those things are true and can be helpful eventually. Hoping you have some local support and hope the hubby and the kiddo are on their best behavior to help you through the next few days/weeks. So sorry!!
  • Thanks, @emsmama15  and @Infantino22 . My dad seems to be doing better, so that is really helping a ton. As has the support here and from local friends, my DH, etc.

@carrieandroy--the good news is that there will indeed be times when a baby is as easy as a cat. I have such good memories of snuggling my sleeping baby boy on the couch for hours at a time. This time around, with a toddler in the house, the snuggle time will look different, but despite the really hard times, there are also some really, really lovely quiet times with a little one. ;)

  • An employee at a maternity store told me I was big for 24.5 weeks. Perhaps it should be in their job training that they don't say that.

P.S. It's annoying that when my bump was small and I was excited to show it off, everyone downplayed it and said I didn't even look pregnant. And now that I'm bigger and appreciate comments that make me feel like I'm not a whale, I get the opposite.  :/

  • Seriously. When will people learn? Just say: "you look gorgeous!" And move on. ;) for what it's worth, I think your 24.5 weeks bump looks just perfect, @CarrieandRoy   :)
  • @CarrieandRoy WTF? The salesperson said that?!? I'd make a complaint to the manager. A maternity store worker, more than anyone, should appreciate the different shapes and sizes of women and the different way that they carry pregnancies. And a salesperson, more than anyone, should always say nothing but compliments.

  • I recently started a prenatal yoga class at a studio near me (mainly to help out with some of these early 3rd RAGING 'MONES). Most of the other women in the class are in the 3rd tri as well (the instructor has us do intros saying our first name and how far along we are are). I have done 2 classes and am surprised at how different everyone's bumps look: some are HUGE and some hardly seem to show!  It actually makes me feel better about my size practicing with all these other women.

That having been said, people can be insensitive a$$holes. Sometimes they say things just to make small talk or to try to be "friendly." @CarrieandRoy feelin' ya on that one. That woman is an insensitive a$$hole.

I work with seniors who DON'T HOLD BACK, plus 1 or 2 who have memory loss and literally say "You are huge! Are you sure it's not twins?" Every time they see me.... which is more than 5 times daily!

Although one of them said yesterday, "Have you lost weight? You look like you have. That's great because you were getting really fat." I responded, "Geez I hope I haven't lost weight because that would be really bad for the baby!" She had forgotten that I am pregnant! "OH! You are pregnant? That's wonderful!" I played along because in that situation there is not much one can do. And elderly ladies LOVE pregnant women and babies.
  • oh my gosh @lillebowski23 ! Those comments made me laught while reading them, but even if you know there is a reasonable explanation for why people are saying what they are (i.e. They are old and have memory loss), I bet it can take its toll over time. Glad you found an awesome prenatal yoga class. I might need to look into that this summer, just to have some baby and me time. I love my toddler, but I sense I may need the occasional break once third tri hits. :)
  • @lillebowski23 That's hilarious and kind of adorable. It's the same when working with kids... you just need to brush it off. I actually haven't gotten any pregnant belly comments from my patients yet (but to be honest I'm not sure they would notice) but I have gotten comments on the acne break-out that I had first trimester and having something stuck in my teeth.

I keep meaning to go to a prenatal yoga class but haven't gotten around to it.

  • @CarrieandRoy - my coworker asked me how far along I was and when I told her, she side-eyed my bump and said "Oh my..."  I smiled and walked away.  She should feel relieved because I really wanted to punch her in the face.  People can be so insensitive!!  Having seen your bump, I think you look perfectly normal for your gestation!!  :)  Plus, an employee at a maternity store should NEVER say that.  What the hell?

  • Had my first truly dumb comment last night. A coworker asked when baby was due and I mentioned that we'd probably not get to 9/12 since we'd likely do a repeat c-section. She proceeded to say that she thought that must be an easier way to go--just get in there and get it done. ?!?!?! Of course, there's also the small matter of having major surgery. And then caring for a toddler and newborn. But whatevs.

I'm absolutely not making an argument for either way being easier--both are damn tough and each recovery has its own challenges. But it did ruffle my feathers a bit to have her assume I would do a c-section "because it's easier."  It's actually something I would love to avoid, but risk factors indicate it's likely the best route for us to have a healthy mom and healthy baby in the end.

Anyway. Rant over. But why do people gotta be dumb? It's not a contest and all pregnant ladies are gorgeous.
  • Yep. Just like making an appointment to get your nails done! Did you respond to that comment in any way? I think I would be speechless.

  • @BernieRae -- I was sort of speechless too.  I eventually told her that I just wasn't a big fan of having surgery and that the lifting restrictions afterward were fairly limiting last time. And I added that this time, a lift restriction will particularly challenging with a 2.5 year old. A light bulb sort of went on, but not really. She proceeded to tell me how she worked up until delivery with her daughter, went and had the baby "over the noon hour" (really!?) and then went right back to work. Lo and behold, she said that about two weeks later she got really ill with pre-eclampsia because she didn't rest (or something). This particular person gets really mad when others judge/don't understand her experiences, or when people talk insensitively about issues that matter to her, so it's especially fun that she's totally clueless about doing the same to the rest of us.

Basically, I'll be glad not to talk with her about pregnancy or child-rearing, like, ever again. ;)
  • @Sporty1216 your coworker probably went to one of those drive-thru hospitals. Your baby is delivered in under 15 minutes or it's free. And you get fries with that.

  • @CarrieandRoy and @Sporty1216, people are idiots! There is this strange phenomenon that happens when you're pregnant, where you suddenly become public property and everyone feels free to comment on your body, touch you inappropriately and generally spew unwelcome advice and other nonsense at you. I find it obnoxious and I'm sorry you've both been on the receiving end of it recently...

  • I took up so much space with my rant on the check-in that I forgot my rave. The stroller arrived today! After test driving a bunch at babies r us we decided on a BOB motion. We couldn't find anywhere to test it out so we just decided to order it and can return it if we don't like it. I hope we like it because stroller shopping was making me nutty.
  • @BernieRae The bob motion is on the top of my list right now! Let me know what you think.
  • @createillumination - I put it together and strolled it around the house and so far so good!  I had liked the city mini gt, but DH didn't like the wrapped handle. He liked the britax b-agile, but I didn't like that the handle wasn't adjustable. The Motion has a foam handle that folds down nice and low for my short self. It's also on sale right now for $280 on Amazon with free shipping and returns.
  • Rave: Guys, I slept last night! 8.5 hours straight without waking up even once! This hasn't happened in weeks and I feel like a million bucks!!! Wishing you all a great Saturday!

  • We're planning on getting a regular City Mini. I love the way it handled in the store and being super-lightweight, compact, and foldable is key for our lifestyle. I've been stalking other people's strollers I see around the city and like 3/4 of them are City Minis. Uppababy seems popular too, but it's not in our price range. My H and I are similar, very average heights (5'6" and 5'10") so the lack of adjustability for the City Mini wasn't an issue for us.

  • My mom is a member of a local Facebook yard sale site or something like that. (Not actual yard sales -- just people selling stuff on Facebook.) She bought me a stroller and a vibrating baby seat without asking (because you have to bid quick or you lose it.) I totally appreciate her buying me stuff, but I'm the type of person who researches absolutely everything for my registry, so I'm really hoping I'm happy with those items. I pointed out to her that we should wait to buy things until after my baby shower, so she has stopped for now.

@CarrieandRoy I hope you like the items too! What did you get? I'm the same way about researching things. And it's tough because your mom spent money on these things which could be awkward if you end up wanting or needing something else. I had researched which infant car seat to get, but then DH was offered a recent hand me down from people we trust. It's funny how i immediately didn't care which one it was since it was free. Turns out it is the exact one I had decided on :) Try to keep an open mind and maybe try not to research other strollers or chairs to compare ;)

ETA: it probably wasn't clear above, but this would bother me too :( I would hate for someone to spend money on something I didn't need or want.

@bernierae she got a used Fisher-Price My Little Snugapuppy Deluxe Plush Bouncer. I would have gone with a rock n' play because everyone says they are a must-have.

I'm not sure what the stroller is. Right now it is in the guest room closet and my DH's former step-son is here for the weekend, so I don't want to go in there to check what kind it is. I think it might be this Jeep Cherokee Sport one, although I don't remember what the umbrella part looked like. (Is that what you call the part that shades the baby?) It seems fine, but a stroller is definitely something I would have researched first. I mean, I even researched wash cloths. I'm kind of a crazy person.

ETA: I don't even know what age I'm allowed to start putting the baby in this. I'll have to look it up after I confirm what stroller it is.

  • @CarrieandRoy --that's totally ack! and yay! situation. hooray for getting things for good prices. ack for not getting to choose them yourself. As far as the bouncy seat goes, I'd say you really won't know what your baby likes until she's here anyway, so may as well start with a cheap one. If it works, then awesome. If she doesn't like it, no hard feelings because there was no way to know that prior to her arrival and you go pick something else out.

With the stroller, my MIL gave us an umbrella stroller. I have not used it once. It sits in the basement with a bunch of other stuff we don't use. So if you don't like it, you can probably come up with a story about how that will be the one that stays at home for walks around the block and the other one is in the car for being out and about. And then you only use the one that stays at home when she comes over. haha.  I hope it works out though, and you end up liking it! :)
  • @CarrieandRoy -- we must have been posting at the same time! The bouncer and the rock n' play are different enough that I'd still get the rock n' play if you want one. I never had one, but I do know people love them. But it's a totally different height, different motion, etc. I don't think of bouncers and rock n' plays as being in the same category, personally. (Hoping I just helped you justify getting what you really want. :) but I think it's true, too. )
  • I'm trying to keep the baby gear to a minimum because I know it will drive DH crazy. So a separate bouncer and rock n play probably aren't a good idea. If the nursery didn't have a queen bed and long dresser in it, I could store things in there. Sadly, it's going to be crowded in there even without that kind of stuff.

I *absolutely* get that, @CarrieandRoy ! My DH is a minimalist too. We got lucky because I had a home office in a sun room and I got rid of that and made it a play room, so we can mostly keep all of the kid stuff in there, even though it is a very small
room. If I had to keep it all in the nursery, I'd be toast! There are lots of things that will fold down flat and break down to be small so you can slide it under a bed or whatever when not in use. Almost everything we own does that. ;)

ETA: my "home office" now is a small table in what used to be the eat in area of the kitchen. I can't wait until we can move to a roomier home someday!

Guys. Pregsomnia sucks. Pregsomnia when you are sharing a hotel room AND a bed with your husband and your toddler  REALLY sucks. I want to turn on the tv, have snacks, and walk around. At least I have my phone.....

Eta: pregsomnia win! Snuck into the bathroom to get a handful of chewy mini sweet tarts. Eating them in bed (quietly) and got the HUGEST kick! I even felt it from the outside. Sugar and no sleep for the wiiiiiiiiin! ;)
  • @Sporty1216 add me to the pregsomnia train... 1:53am and I'm WIDE awake. I had been doing so well the past few nights too so I'm grumpy! I was laid up all day yesterday nursing a sprained ankle so I got in zero physical activity, which I'm sure is a major contributor. Maybe I should go eat something sweet so baby can have a sugar party!

hope you get some rest soon

You listen to them while lying in bed and many times you'll fall asleep within minutes of starting one. It doesn't always work for me, but most of the time it does.
I'm sure there are tons on Apple music and if you have spotify I like the ones by this woman:
    Daniela Casotti (Devamani)
    https://open.spotify.com/artist/3djxLZWGU1MBjXlR2HGbP0

They also have a ton by lots of amazing teachers on yogaglo.com which you can try free for 15 days. Or our favorite one is by Rod Stryker which can only be bought on an old school cd. Ha!
We just have lay on our sides instead of on the back like they all suggest.
