My shower is April 10th. No theme... my mom and aunt are throwing the shower for me, and my mom's opinion is basically "Ugh, don't tell me you want decorations". So, there's that.
Also, for those of you who asked for books in lieu of cards... I'm trying to come up with some wording that would make it clear the book is optional, but we'd appreciate it if it happened. Basically, my mom finds asking for books instead of a card gift grabby, so I'm hoping that with wording showing it's clearly optional, she'll let me get that through.
I was thinking maybe: "[DH] and [arj] would love to get started on Baby's library! If you'd like to help, please feel free to bring a favorite children's book in lieu of a card."
Thoughts?
My shower hosts did this for me. Pinterest has some great ideas for wording! I don't recall what mine said and too lazy to go downstairs and find it but I know the idea came from Pinterest!
Whew! I'm exhausted! My SIL and cousin IL through my Dr. Seuss baby shower and it was awesome! Everyone played a couple corny games but the food and gifts were the bigger focuses. Feeling really loved and looking forward to finishing up Elizabeth's nursery with all the gifts.
@Charla1224that is such a cute theme! And I'm nerding out that they did it right before Dr Seuss week. You look great and I love the hat they gave you!
@Charla1224 So lovely! What's the red and white cup thingie? It looks like an awesome Seuss-tastic parfait!
We're having a shower on April 17, which is cutting it close a bit but DH's family is throwing the shower and there are two other babies and one bridal shower and a wedding before May, so it's the only time the whole family can make it.
No theme, just a potluck brunch with games and gifts and family and friends:) So many people are helping out that I'm not planning on doing a hostess gift, but I might try to do something for whosever house it ends up being at... maybe a ball jar gift like Charla's?
I'm excited for everything on the registry! We don't have much money at the moment so we are waiting to see what people buy us, so that we don't spend money we don't need to. But I want more baby things! I got a free bottle for buying a nursing bra at Motherhood Maternity, and I darn near cried!
We are having a co-ed "shower" that will be more like a party, just as an excuse for everyone to get together. It will be on March 19th in the evening. It's a fiesta theme and we aren't doing finger foods, but we will be doing a build your own nacho bar. My aunt offered to purchase the cake and beverages.
We are hosting it ourselves because, to be quite honest, when DH's sister had her shower last year, there was SO much drama surrounding who did what, who took the credit, who wasn't invited to be involved, etc (no, seriously). And at 8 months pregnant, I didn't even want to deal with that. My aunt works full time and has two high school aged children who keep her very busy with activities, so I didn't feel comfortable making her take on the responsibility of the whole party, even though she wouldn't loved to. I didn't want a shower at all, but my husband really wanted to get together with people we are close to but don't get to see often.
Before anyone panics or calls us tacky (as I've been called on other boards for hosting my own "shower" lol), we did not register and had "no gifts please" printed on the bottom of the invitations. I don't know why this freaks people out so much, tbh!
We had our shower this past Sunday! Had it early because of family traveling and AZ gets hot latter in spring.
We did co-ed with ping-pong and corn hole which I loved because it didn't get too cheesy and we got to celebrate with everyone. It was an awesome day, very relaxed, BBQ & beer. My MIL hosted and I need to get her a little plant and write a thank you note. I would get her a piece of jewelry but finances are really tight right now.
We got so many gifts, people really went overboard. I need to exchange some of the clothes for larger sizes this weekend. My favorite items are the things we will use a lot of like dippers, baby soap and wipes. We got a lot of baby books which I can't wait to read to him! Those are special to me.
I wore a normal maxi dress that fit's my growing belly. I'll post pics when I get them from my family.
Ping pong! I love it...I tried to register for a ping pong table and kayak for my wedding registry....but got my pots and pans and dishes lol (but I love it all!)
...but maybe for the baby shower.... (Who am I kidding though lol)
So I got a super cryptic text from my sister saying I need to make my registry public and wear something cute on March 26th. I had assumed I wouldn't have a shower because this is my second and my friend who was going to throw me a shower (despite my protests) is with her son in the hospital as he recovers from surgery. I had told my sister that I had made a registry for the discount and freebies, so now I gotta take the nursing bras off!

Yay! If I remember correctly, you were in the hospital the day of your shower for your son? Am i thinking of the right person? Enjoy!!

Yes indeed. I was on hospital bed rest and my son came a month early (actually the day after the shower!) so I got to see pictures, but that's it. I don't want to speak ill of the departed, but my MIL was going to throw that party whether I was there or not and it is nice to actually be able to attend a baby shower in my honor now.
My shower is this Sunday and I am flying home on Saturday. I keep peeking at my registry and have hardly gotten anything and there's going to be at least 25 people my mom said. I know that probably sounds super selfish and maybe people do last minute shopping but it's like I've already spent SO much money on clothes, crib, dresser, nursery décor, etc.. that I don't even have the actually ESSESNTIALS yet and I was looking forward to the shower being helpful. That frightens both me and my bank account! But either way, I'm still excited and can't wait to see all my family!

I think people can often be last minute shoppers... I generally am unless I want to give a big-ticket item. Another reality is that many people tend to buy clothes. You could wait and see what you end up getting and return some of what you already purchased or what you've been given.

I hope you end up getting things off your registry!! I hate it how sometimes people buy stuff not on the registry, there is the reason there is a registry. I know that sounds selfish, and don't get me wrong, I appreciate any gift.. but sometimes the things people give aren't helpful.

I've noticed the same thing on mine. I'm hoping maybe some people got me gift cards at least. Whatever I get though I'll be thankful, but we're really kinda counting on this as well as everyone in the family specifically said to put absolutely everything on the registry, including furniture, and not to buy anything. So we did as we were told. I want to start my nursery though! I'm getting anxious.
@adorkablepixie@dsmith211 Thank you! Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way because I feel like a bad person, lol. But yes that's what a registry is for. I know people love buying clothes but its like.. first of all I've already bought her clothes and I'm always afraid I'll end up with way too many of one size because they don't know what anyone else is getting as far as sizes. I don't even have a stroller or infant car seat! Also need a pack n play which is what we intend for her to sleep in the first few weeks/months. Ahhh. Just so much I need yet. But yes you're right, maybe people resorted to gift cards especially knowing I live out of state.. but my dad will be driving back with the gifts we get. Thank God for him! I guess I'll find out this weekend!
For my bridal shower, I got a lot of things that were on my registry, but very few people actually used the printout/ordered online/whatever, so it looked like no one was buying us anything. We registered at Target and Macy's for that. They always ask at our Babies R Us if the item is on somebody's/our registry when we buy something though. So maybe people are buying stuff but just not taking the steps to make sure it's marked as purchased on the registry? Either that or they are doing their own thing and going off-registry, or are doing things last-minute. :P

This. We registered at Target for our wedding. I guess some people didn't know how to correctly have items taken off and others just didn't bother. We ended up with SIX crock pots and THREE quesadilla makers. I'm not even exaggerating.

I'm almost expecting this... A lot of people in my family don't really understand how registries work. The last big event we had that had one was my wedding actually... and that didn't go well in terms of the registry. At least if that happens I can take stuff back and exchange for the things I need.

That's so annoying to me though. Like come on.. take the extra few minutes and have it taken off the registry at check out. I do not want to end up with 6 changing tables and 23 diaper bags. I pray my family knows better and is not doing this. That's also why I only register at one place because I don't want duplicates and have to worry about returning things when it can simply be avoided.

Dont feel selfish. I totally know what you mean. In general people like to buy you what THEY want to buy you or what THEY think you need. I really thought more people would resort to my registry but they just dont. HOPEFULLY if you get a crap load of clothes, you get some gift receipts and you can take back some stuff, then use that money toward things you NEED, the essentials! That is me and DH plan for my shower on saturday.

Another thought, if a certain color or style of an item you registered for was available only online, it is possible that people purchased the same item, in a different color or style that was available in-store.

This. Hopefully we won't get quite so many clothes on our end bc we already have a few girl grandchildren in the family and we're getting a lot of hand me downs, but if we do happen to get a bunch we plan taking some back so that we can get other necessities. A little annoying since you have to go that extra step, but we're making it work one way or another.

We ended up with a TON of clothes from our first shower 2 weeks ago, and we still have 1 more shower to go in about 2 weeks. We received a lot of duplicates, so we are planning to either return or exchange some of them for different sizes after the next shower. Depending on where you're registered, a lot of places will accept returns for store credit - even without a gift receipt - and you can use that credit to buy what you really need. We also got a lot of gift cards since people knew we were flying from out of state and couldn't travel back with many gifts. Hopefully, a lot of your guests did the same and that's why your registry isn't showing very many items purchased.
Hell, I would just be happy with a gift at this point, on registry or not....
Has DH parents given you two anything yet for the LO?
They have some clothes for us. And my mom had some things too, and I am thankful for all of it.
Believe me, I am not complaining (well, not totally ) It just irks me when people bitch about the gifts they got. Just be thankful that someone took the time to go to the store, buy you a gift, and wrap it and take a weekend afternoon to attend your shower (which are always boring AF). Who cares if it came off your registry or not. Be thankful that someone took the time to think of you, and wanted to celebrate your LO with you.

This!! My registry has been passed around to everyone in my family because they asked for one. I never intended to make one but people made a fuss of wanting to feel included since I am so far. I use Facebook to communicate with my family in the USA and a month or so ago I posted a photo of my baby blanket I am crocheting. Everyone knows I love to crochet and knit! A family member sent a message right after saying that the blanket I started is nice looking but she is knitting me one. This is not the only message I have received about people knitting and crocheting blankets for baby. I will end up with a million blankets and an unused registry at this point!! I feel so selfish and snotty about the whole thing so I obviously haven't said a word, but jeez people...Why did I bother making a registry at all?!

@KurrantLOL. I think a couple weeks ago my UO was about getting 100 knitted blankets. I will probably end up donating a few because no body needs that many blankets.

I think it's pretty common to receive a ton of blankets and way more than necessary clothes. I'm sorry, but it's really rude to be so ungrateful. Return the stuff or whatever you want to do, but don't make it seem like such a hassle to have to return a gift that someone didn't even have to get you in the first place.
I just hate the sentiment that other people should have buy the essentials and provide for your child. If you are strapped financially, maybe buy less baby clothes and the expense of a car seat won't seem so bad. The things a baby *actually needs* are much less than what the baby industry tells us they need.

I've bought maybe 10-12 outfits, when carter's was having an amazing sale. Other than that, we haven't bought anything but on sale diapers, on sale wipes, cloth diapers, and the crib. We've been saving $75 per paycheck since we found out we were pregnant so that we can buy all the other items we need when the time comes. We should have more than enough saved up for it.

It's not that I am ungrateful at all... but its the fact that my family asked where I am registered and what I NEED and you tell them.. and they end up getting something you already have or don't really need. Doesn't make much sense to me. That's all. @yogahh@js8812

This is a good way to do it!!
We haven't bought much beyond a package of NB and size 1 diapers and a ton of wipes. My parents gifted us the crib on Black Friday so that was great, and I've picked up a couple of Kiinde things on Amazon when they were the deal of the day. Other than that we're kind of doing the same as you, putting aside money and waiting until after the shower. The shower is going to be small but every little thing helps and the completion discount on the registry will definitely help too.
@Aquinna82 Yes, the completion discount, I am so looking forward to that! Especially at Target, because with the Red Card it's an extra 5% off. Woohoo!! Yes, please!

Diagnosis: Hypothalamic Amenorrhea
Treatment: Clomid: 50mg, 100mg, 150mg - not successful and not monitored
Menopur 75ml (upped to 112.5ml), Ovidrel, & IUI IUI #1 8/31/2015
9/15/2015: BFP HCG - 400, 9/17/2015: HCG - 827, 9/21/2015 - HCG 3,327!I've noticed the same thing on mine.
This. We registered at Target for our wedding. I guess some people didn't know how to correctly have items taken off and others just didn't bother. We ended up with SIX crock pots and THREE quesadilla makers. I'm not even exaggerating.

I do not want to end up with 6 changing tables and 23 diaper bags. I pray my family knows better and is not doing this. That's also why I only register at one place because I don't want duplicates and have to worry about returning things when it can simply be avoided.
Believe me, I am not complaining (well, not totally
I just hate the sentiment that other people should have buy the essentials and provide for your child. If you are strapped financially, maybe buy less baby clothes and the expense of a car seat won't seem so bad. The things a baby *actually needs* are much less than what the baby industry tells us they need.

It was a wonderful day ... DH and I were overwhelmed with the outpouring of love from our friends and family . We're both so thankful!
