Parenting after a Loss

Eczema..

Does your LO have it?  If so, what are you doing to help?  DS has it awful on his chest and shoulders and on his cheeks.  I'm using Eucerin lotion, and I'm cutting back his baths to every other day.. my sister suggested adding oatmeal into his baths, and changing his body wash/shampoo, too.. what soap products are you using for LO?  Right now I was using Johnsons, but am definitely switching.. just not sure what I'm going to try.. his poor skin is so dry.. :(

Re: Eczema..

  • J has absolutely awful eczema while S has perfect skin. Twice a day we lather him up with Aquaphor lotion. We bathe both boys in Aquaphor soap and within three minutes of getting him out we coat him in the lotion. When it's really bad we apply a little cortisone cream for three days.

  • Does he get it all over, or in circle patches?  Owen has it in circle patches.. he has 5 patches on his chest/shoulders, ranging between quarter sized to half dollar sized, and then 2 little dime sized spots on his cheeks.. but, everywhere else on his torso just feels very dry and bumpy, though I don't "see" it, kwim?  We just started the Eucerin.. is there anything special about the aquaphor as opposed to the other products made by Eucerin? I'm using the skin calming one -- it's a 3 on their "richness" scale.. maybe I need one that's a bit thicker.. I have to be careful, too, because sometimes if I put certain lotions on (like the Johnsons one!), his skin just gets bright red.. he's got super sensitive skin! The Eucerin doesn't cause any reaction though, so that's good.. I'll look for the Aquaphor bath soap, too..

Is the cortisone cream from the peds? I know you can get OTC cortisone cream, but not sure if that's what you're referring to.  DS has his 6 month appointment in like 3ish weeks.. I was figuring I'd just talk with her about his skin issues then, but I'm wondering if maybe I should call and make him an appointment?

  • Jacen has rough, bumpy skin all over.  The bad patches are circular and red.  Aquaphor is a lot like Vaseline so it's greasy but really locks moisture in.  His skin sucks it up within about five minutes and he doesn't look greasy anymore.  I've never used Eucerin so I don't know the difference.  The cortisone cream we use is over the counter but it was recommended by their pediatrician.  I would at least call the nurse line before you use it to make sure it's recommended at his age.

  • Aquaphor is a Eucerin product, correct?  At least, when I searched it, it showed up as a Eucerin product..

I use vaseline on DS's cheeks, and that keeps them much clearer than they would be..

    Thanks for all the tips!!

  • We use Cetaphil Restoraderm. I've tried Eucerin but it didn't help w/ the redness for G. I also use Babyganics gentle shampoo/wash, used to use Johnsons and since we switched I hardly have to lotion him at all. I have sensitive skin too so I only use All Free & Clear detergent, the fragrance/dye in the detergent can be really irritating as well.

  • We use CA Baby bath products. She has it on her face so after bath we use 1 hydrocortisone cream and Vanicream. That was recommended by Pedi. It works great.

  • Landon had it on his legs.  I actually switched him to the baby Aveeno oatmeal wash and the Aveeno baby eczema cream for lotion and it cleared up. I also used his Aquaphor on his spots to clear them up (the same thing I use on his butt...lol).

  • We use Cetaphil Restoraderm wash and Aveeno Baby Eczema lotion. If it gets bad we add hydrocortisone cream. In our case DS also had food allergies such that once we eliminated the culprits his eczema improved.

  • Could eczema flare ups be teething related? I have been saying DS is starting to teeth.. And now the awful flare of eczema and today hes starting with a nasty diaper rash =(

  • Our pediatrician told us to steer clear of Johnson's. We use California Baby, and slather DD with Aquafor after every bath. She gets a bath every night and soap every other night, and while she had it pretty bad on her arms for awhile, the Aquafor cleared it right up. We're applying it as a preventative, now, as she has a tendency towards dry skin. GL!

  • Where do you find aquaphor?? Didn't have it at target and DH said CVS didn't have it either? Just a fluke, or is it only carried certain places?
