Shower Thread

This may be a little early for some, but now that most of us are in the third trimester (or getting close to it) and some of the posters are beginning to have showers, I thought it would be fun to start a shower thread.

Are you having a shower? If so, when? What items are you most excited about on your registry? If you've had your shower already, what were your favorite items you received? Any fun/novelty items? What did you give your shower hostess(es) as a "thank  you"? If you've had your shower already, what baby essentials do you still need to buy? Did/will your SO attend? If you've already had your shower, feel free to share any pictures and/or tell us all about it.

**Note** This post is not intended to exclude anyone who isn't having a shower. Even if you're not having one, please share what items you still need for your LO, what items you are most looking forward to shopping for, etc. STMs who received multiple similar items, did you return some of the multiples, or did you find that you eventually needed them?
----------------------------------------------------------------

I just got back in town last night from our first shower in DH's hometown this past weekend. We have another shower in my hometown next month. Since we have to travel out of state for each, our hostesses decided to have them both earlier than most. We got a lot of items off our registry, but there are still quite a few left - which is great since we still have one shower to go. DH attended and helped me open the gifts. He wasn't too interested in playing the shower games, but he was a good sport about it. Since the shower was out of state, most guests had their larger gifts shipped to our house (for free through our registry vendors), but we got a ton of gift cards, books, and baby clothes. I don't think we'll have to buy LO any clothes for the first year at least! Aside from smaller baby essentials, we got some of our "big-ticket" items like our highchair, MamaRoo swing, play gym & matching jumper set, crib bedding & matching accessories, Pack 'N Play. We still need a crib mattress, audio/video monitor, glider & ottoman, stroller travel system, and convertible car seat, as well as a number of smaller items. Between the shower next month and the gift cards we got this weekend, that should cover a lot of our remaining registry items. We got so many blankets that we are going to have to return some of them. While much appreciated, we are only going to need so many of them in southern Florida in May! We got several handmade items, which was so thoughtful. My favorite gift was from my SIL who had a mini patchwork quilt made for LO with the logos of both my alma mater and DH's. It's so cute! My big project for this weekend will be starting on Thank You cards.

My MIL & SIL did a great job planning the shower, and it turned out really nice! I'm sending them each a Bath & Body Works basket with a Thank You card later this week. Below is a pic of DH and me opening gifts (The poster in the background is of DH's cousin who is working as an au pair in Europe this year. Since she was really bummed about not being able to make it to the shower, my SIL brought a life-sized poster of her to stand in for all the family photos - which was hilarious - and she "attended" via Skype.).

Re: Shower Thread

  • Cool idea! My shower is March 6th back in Ohio where my family is. (We currently live in NC due to being military) I am flying both ways because there's no way I can do the 9 hour drive comfortably. I'll be 30 weeks at my shower and my mom is hosting it at this Italian restaurant that has a big room we rented out. I'm pretty excited and can't wait to see all my family and them see me with my big baby bump. I really hope to get a car seat and the stroller during my shower then some other smaller essentials.

I'm not sure what I'll get my mom as a thank you gift yet though! She's put a lot of work into this and making my cake, favors and even the center pieces which are super awesome. They're little tricycles but made of things I will be able to take home and use like diapers, bottles, blankets, etc. I think she found the idea on Pinterest and she is very crafty and an awesome cake decorator. Will post pictures after! My SO will not attend due to his work schedule and it being out of state :(

  • My baby shower is April 2 and I am really looking forward to it! My husband's boss actually got us a lot of stuff off our registry already and gave it to us two weeks ago. They got us the high chair, infant carseat, extra base for the carseat, both of our diaper bags, crib sheets, and a set of bibs!! They really went all out and spent over like $300-$400. I couldn't believe it!!

I didn't even know that giving people a "thank you" for throwing a shower was a thing until I read it on here recently. I am not giving thank yous, I think that's kinda dumb. I've thrown multiple showers and the only thank you I got was a verbal thank you and a hug. That's it. Heck, when I threw my sister in laws shower I don't even think I got a hug and honestly I don't remember her saying thank you either. So, yeah, other than me hugging my best friends and my MIL and saying thanks, they aren't getting anything.

  • Since this is my second, I highly doubt I'll have a shower with family and friends, but my work always has a shower for people having a baby regardless of the number. The major things we still need are a new video monitor and I'd like to get a wrap carrier. We also might get a new swing, as the one we have is battery powered and ate batteries like crazy. Enjoy your showers ladies! It's always so much fun (and a little overwhelming) when you get home with bags and bags of new baby gear!

  • My shower is set for April 3rd. My aunt and cousin are putting it together and I am so excited. I really am hoping to get the pack n' play that we registered for as we make a lot of road trips to H's home state and it will come in handy!
  • Our shower isn't until April 2nd, so we've got a ways to go.  My parents purchased our crib, and we got a secondhand swing and vibrating chair from a lady at my mom's work.  We purchased our crib mattress and pack n play on sale at Target, but we still have a bunch of large items that we keep an eye out for sales for because our due date is 4 weeks after the shower and one major item is our car seat!

I have never heard of a thank you to shower hosts aside from a general "thanks for hosting" and maybe a card.  I guess that's how we do things in Wisconsin?  I might go with a small gift like a bottle of wine or something, but seeing as 5 women are hosting the shower, anything larger could get pricey.

  • Aw these sound great!

I am not having a shower - we live in LA, and our families are spread between Florida-Boston-Toronto (in Canada), and neither of us can travel right now, and my OB doesn't want me to travel after March (she thinks I may deliver early based on a low protein in my blood, the name of which escapes me now), so it just wouldn't work. Ah well

We have gotten a crib and a travel system, and are now looking at getting other essentials ... like a place to put all of her clothing. What I am most looking forward to, re. registry like items, is a rocking chair/glider, since we have a couch ... and then dining room chairs, and no where else to sit.

My Mom does want to have a "Meet the Baby" tea party in August when the three of us go back home (Toronto) for my sister's wedding, which may be cool ... if I figure out what this party entails

  • We're doing April 2 too! It's going to be a mid-afternoon cocktail hour thing - since I know some people don't love baby showers, I wanted to make an event that didn't interfere with any major evening plans or anything like that. Going to make it all ladies, but it's at my parent's house which is two minutes from our house, so telling all the dudes to go hang out with my husband until a bit later when everyone can come over and have an everybody thing then.

Pretty happy with my registry so far, but need to figure out: which car seat to register for, if I want a high chair or not (hadn't occurred to me, but now I'm thinking that's an obvious one?), and if our friend's three-year old mattress that they gave to us along with a crib is safe or if I should be getting a new mattress as well.

I've found that heartfelt thank-you notes go a long way, especially if they're homemade!

I am in love with this idea! My bridal shower was a tea party theme and I loved it so much and always said if I was having a girl I would want another tea party. Well, as things turned out with my son I wasn't able to go to the shower because I was on bed rest and I am not super comfortable having a full-on shower with my 2nd. So I think it would be awesome to host a cute backyard tea party in the summer so everyone can just get together and oooo and ahhh over my adorable little girl. Love it, thanks!

  • Our co-ed shower is March 12, so it is finally coming up! My mom and one of my BFFs are hosting, they came up with a Mad Hatter's Tea Party theme and I love it. It is going to be in Brooklyn not too far from our neighborhood which means almost everyone is traveling to attend and I'm so appreciative.

I'm surprised by how many people have already gotten us gifts and had them sent to us directly, I've not opened anything because my mom wants me to bring them to the shower to open but I have a pretty good idea of what everything is because I can't stop peaking at the registry. I'm surprised and thrilled that we've already gotten a lot of the smaller essentials (boppy, swaddles, bottles, etc) as well as an ergo baby carrier, rockaroo, and baby bjorn bouncer. We already purchased our stroller ourselves because we wanted a pricey one (Uppababy Cruz) but I'm really hoping for the Mesa car seat. I am also really hoping to receive the Halo bassinet.

I'm not sure what I will do to say thank you to my hosts but I definitely want to give them something small to show them how much I appreciate all that they've done for us. I know it isn't expected or required but I love giving gifts anyway and it will make them feel good.
  • So far I have one scheduled for April 9 and April 16 (my parents are divorced and their families have always done separate showers). I will know when the other one is scheduled this Saturday. I haven't thought much about what I will get my parents or DH's aunt for throwing us the shower but I will come up with something. Since this is our first, we pretty much need everything. So I can imagine the showers are going to be super exciting but overwhelming too!
  • My shower is April 2, which seems to be a popular day for showers here! My sister is throwing a ballet themed shower and I'm really excited because she asked everyone to bring a book instead of a card, so little Pollie will hopefully have a great start to her library. The decorations she's gotten so far are adorable and she's doing a candy bar full of pink candy.

Really hoping to get the swing from our registry and then the smaller essentials. We registered for a full travel system so it's pretty pricey, so we'll most likely end up getting that ourselves.

I'm planning on getting my sister a gift card to a spa, so we can have a little spa day together before the baby gets here.

I already had my work shower 2 weeks ago, since all my team was in town. It was fun, and the cake was to die for! My team bought me a few of the "bigger" items (highchair and bouncy seat) and I also got a ton of onesies and books!

Next month is the family/friends shower, which I'll need to travel for (going back to my home state for the first time in over two years!). I know people like to buy cute clothes over the more practical registry items, so I'm not really expecting to get a lot of registry stuff, I'll just be happy with whatever
  • My shower is March 5. I have mixed feelings about it - I am excited and overwhelmed at the same time. First off I am very grateful my mom wanted to do this for me but as it gets closer the more stressed I am becoming. DH parents are divorced and re married and MIL and FiL's new wife don't like each other, which makes things uncomfortable/awkward. Also there is such a RANDOM mix of people coming - DH women work friends (which was a dramatic battle all in itself), my moms friends, MIL friends, FIL friends, family from every side and my friends. I barely know half the people coming and the space is very small and tight. I was totally OK not having a shower but my it would of broke my mom's heart and I couldn't do it, as much as she drives me insane. I have seen some people buying things off my registry, but it surprises me how many people like to do "there own thing.' Many people like to make home made gifts, or buy you what they think you need. I am truly thankful for anything we get, but DH and I are prepared to buy a lot of the stuff off our registry once the shower is over because quite frankly we need it! Another thing that stresses me out is tons of people touching my belly in one sitting. I am not really into being the spotlight or the center of attention (that is DH role in the relationship).  I know it will be an overall wonderful day celebrating my LO, but I am ready to just get it over it.

  • I just had my shower on Sunday since my c/s is scheduled at 39+1 weeks (April 29) and we will be in the middle of moving the next two weeks or so.

It it was an amazing day! I was surprised by the theme, which was Little Deer. We did a headband making station and everyone filled out a "wishes for baby" card, which was super sweet and a diaper raffle.

I got got only a few items from my registry - a pack n play with a newborn napper, bumbo, boppy lounger and an oil diffuser/humidifier. The rest was a lot of cute clothing, shoes and blankets!
  • My aunt/cousins on my mom's side are having a shower for me on April 23. It will be mostly family. I've been to enough family showers for my cousins to know that I will likely get some "big ticket" baby items. I wish the shower was not so close to my due date so that I could know what DH and I will need to buy. Regardless, I am excited :) There has been a baby boom on my mom's side of the family in the past year (4 babies in 7 months).

I'm part of a weekly Bible study, and they will throw me a shower as well. There hasn't been a date set yet, but we usually just pick a Tuesday night and have a shower instead of Bible study. We always have fun, and these ladies give great (useful) gifts because they're all mostly moms to babies/toddlers.

  • 3/19 is our shower in DH's hometown in KS.  Some of the ladies from the church he grew up going to are throwing it.  I'm not sure what the theme will be...probably something really girly!  We already have so many hand-me-downs from friends (clothes and shoes GALORE, Snoogle pillow, swing, bathtub, daddy diaper bag, nursing stool, infant car seat + 2 bases, lightweight stroller frame for infant car seat, changing table, Medela bottles, travel Boppy) that the hostesses are going to encourage gift cards.  We will appreciate any gift, but DH is so worried that all we will get is clothes (apparently he thinks that's all that little girls receive), ha!  Looking forward to seeing the in-laws, but not looking forward to the drive (even though it's only 5 hours).

4/2 is our Co-ed shower at our house in Denver, hosted by my cousin and 2 of my girlfriends.  We'll serve brunchy foods with mimosas and bloody mary's...and probably beer for a select few (like my Dad and DH). :)  Again, I'm not sure of a theme, but my girls know I'm not overly girly (even though I'm excited for bows, headbands and beanies...makes sense, no?!), so I'm sure they'll come up with something fun!  I'm looking forward to DH being involved because the Dad needs a little attention too!  And I think he's actually a little excited too. :)

As for hostess gifts, I might just give each a thank you card along with a little plant for their home/office.

I hope everyone has a great time at their shower(s)!

This is my second baby so I'm having a family only event that is coed and basically just an excuse to get together and eat a delicious champagne (except for me) brunch. It's a bohemian theme since that's close to my personal style and will be in March. I don't expect gifts even though I know my mom has bought us tons of things already - it is nice to have a celebration event regardless.

  • No shower for me but I'm having #3 and all three are girls. I want to have a dinner with my girlfriends just to celebrate but it is NOT a shower, just an excuse to get together.

The only things I need for DD#3 are a crib bedding set/decor, baby carrier (thinking a k'tan and ergo), and diapers. I didn't wear the others but think it will be nice since we are going to be outnumbered now. Everything else we need has been packed away and stored after DD#2 was finished using it.

I'm actually getting more stuff for the other two since I'm moving them both into the big room that was the guest room and need furniture/decor for them along with a small remodel (new vanity for 1/2 bath off the room and closet system). DD#3 will use the same nursery furniture that DD#2 is using now and will be in DD#1 room which only needs new paint and decor.

  • Your shower looked adorable!  I love the "ahoy it's a boy" theme.  Too cute!

My shower is April 9th, and I think it's going to be very casual.  My nieces (11 and 8) are in charge of decorations and games.  They keep saying "we can't tell you anything! But...". So basically I know mostly everything lol.  They are going with a unicorn theme lol. Some of the games seem questionable, but hey they are in charge.

I think what I want most from my registry is the travel system stroller, which my mil is getting me.  I also would love the ergo carrier! I think we got most everything else ourselves (oops!). But I've held back on clothes cause I know that's what people like to get.

I'm just looking just to have a fun, relaxing time with family and friends!
  • I had a work baby shower on the 5th where I received our bouncer, floor play mat, receiving blankets & a matching blanket, three pairs of super adorable shoes, some hair bows, pacis, a Sophie teether, and a book.  I was really surprised by how generous and supportive my coworkers are about my pregnancy!  They are the best!

I have my family & friends baby shower on April 2nd as well, and I'm really looking forward to it!  My best friend and MIL are hosting and my sister from Alaska might be flying in!  There are several items on our registry I'm hoping to receive such as our swing, pack n play, and extra car seat base.  We have our convertible carseat on the registry, but I would be very shocked if someone purchased that for us.  The rest are smaller items that I'm sure people will purchase, but nothing we wouldn't be able to pick up on our own if they don't.

For Christmas we received our high chair from my mom and a humidifier from my BIL.  On Black Friday we purchased our Graco Click Connect travel system for $100 off, along with our video monitor (also on sale), diaper bag, and glider/ottoman.  We've also received the occasional gift of clothes, toys, or other baby items since announcing our pregnancy.

  • We're having my shower April 3rd. It will be pretty small 7-15 people (if 1 relative bails, all the rest bail on that side of the family..). My hubby has only 3 people from his side of the family that he wants me to invite, and I don't think any of them are coming. My mom is hosting the shower and we're doing hot air balloon theme with a storybook theme for the food for lunchtime. I had wanted to do the storybook instead of a card thing, but after reading so many negative feelings on here about it and my mom was on the fence about it, we're not going to do it. I'm really looking forward to hanging out with my family and friends.
One of my grandma's got me our travel system and my other grandma is getting us an Amish glider. Those were our only big ticket stuff left, everything else is less than $50. I'm hoping people buy some hooded towels, bath accessories, bottles, toys, etc. off of the registry since I've been withholding spending urges to buy that stuff. The ladies at my work were talking about throwing me a shower there too, but I don't think they'll end up planning it out (ironic since our jobs are production planning).
My DH might come by at the end to load up some of the stuff in his truck and say hello. I will probably make my mom a Thank you card, but not buy her any gifts, she would appreciate a heartfelt thank you card more.

  • We're not having a shower but since my nephew doesn't have any siblings, my SIL gave us ALL his 0-9 month clothes. Holy Hannah there are a lot of clothes! my kid is never going to wear the same outfit twice!
the older women I work with were a little confused as to why I wasn't having a shower. It's cute to see them try to politely ask what I still need so they can come up with a good gift for me when I leave.
  • I'll be having two showers- one out of state next weekend and another in mid April locally.  Not too many items have been purchased off my registry yet, so we'll see! DH is still out of work, so I'm really hoping that some family will be awesome and help with the big ticket items, but of course I'll be thankful for anything we recieve.
  • I'll be having my shower 4/2... my mom, step dad, and grandmother are hosting (and I'm helping a bit because I can't help myself). It's a co-ed shower, Cat in the Hat/ Oh the places you'll go theme. I come from a blended family so just inviting family alone... my guest list is ridiculous... on top of that add SO family... and both of our friends. Obviously I would love for everyone to come, but I will not be heartbroken if they don't; I feel like I might get overwhelmed if everyone shows up. As long as the immediate family and close friends are there, I'll be happy. Unfortunately my best friend is due a week before my shower so she might not be able to make it... but she has a good excuse so she shall be forgiven as long as she shares her baby lovins until my LO gets here.

This sounds like an awesome idea. You'll have to let us know how it goes :)
  • My mom is hosting a small shower in mid-April, and I think I just found the perfect dress today (for $20...what?!). It's a garden party theme, and that's pretty much all I know about it, but I've asked her if I could put together little favor bags (I LOVE favors...those were a favorite part of planning my wedding) for the guests. For a host gift, I plan to treat her to lunch the following weekend and write her a letter of appreciation. I would like to give her a small present, but it will be something I see that strikes my fancy. No specific idea.

I found constructing the registry to be a little harder than I'd planned, but I'm pleased with how it turned out. I am most excited about the cloth diapering items, or the high chair that matches the stroller and car seat we've already purchased.

  • We had our shower this past Sunday! Had it early because of family traveling and AZ gets hot latter in spring.

We did co-ed with ping-pong and corn hole which I loved because it didn't get too cheesy  and we got to celebrate with everyone.  It was an awesome day, very relaxed, BBQ & beer. My MIL hosted and I need to get her a little plant and write a thank you note. I would get her a piece of jewelry but finances are really tight right now.

We got so many gifts, people really went overboard. I need to exchange some of the clothes for larger sizes this weekend. My favorite items are the things we will use a lot of like dippers, baby soap and wipes. We got a lot of baby books which I can't wait to read to him! Those are special to me.

I wore a  normal maxi dress that fit's my growing belly. I'll post pics when I get them from my family.

  • Our shower will be April 9th at my MIL's beautiful house, the same venue I had my bridal shower. She and my mom are planning it together, and secretly I've been "guiding" my mom in the right direction, and helping with decorations and plans and such. The theme is Mom-to-Bee (yellow, gray, and white with bumblebees--I've always loved bees, they're cute). I'm most looking forward to being pampered (yes, I said it), visiting with everyone all at once, and getting great stuff for baby (again, yes, I said it lol). Fortunately, my niece was born last year and I'm getting quite a few of her hand-me-downs suitable for our boy, and I've been buying tons of clothes myself at thrift stores, so there's not too much that we really need. Our registry is short and sweet, mostly filled with necessities-- I'm hoping we get lots of diapers
  • My shower is today! I'm excited about all the snacks and to see the decorations but since I'm nosey I already have a good idea about what gifts we'll receive. I had no idea that having a shower 10 wks before EDD was early but by the looks of things here I guess it is. I wanted it out of the way so I can finalize our nursery purchases, finish laundry, and get settled before she arrives.
Anyway. I finished up my hostess gifts last night. Mani/ pedi kits in Ball jars. Hope they like them.
    Happy shower day!!!

  • My mom is throwing me a shower on April 9, which is only about 4 weeks before my due date, and that makes me a little nervous! But, I already know that my MIL purchased our crib mattress, my mom got us a swing at Christmas, we bought our pack 'n play, crib, stroller, and car seat already... aaand I splurged and bought the Tula carrier I wanted :) Also, I had custom curtains made for her nursery & bought a handmade Beatrix Potter themed quilt and pillow!

At this point, I'd say I'm excited to see what kind of clothes people buy! I didn't register for any clothes, because I expect people will just pick what they think is cute. So, that'll be a fun surprise!

And, I'm excited for cake. I am excited for any event that involves cake. :grimace:

DH is attending. We're holding it at my mom's house. It's Beatrix Potter themed, like the baby's nursery. I am just looking forward to seeing people mostly :)

I'm curious about this themed nursery! I love Harry Potter!

We put some clothes diapering stuff on our registry but I don't see people getting us any of that stuff so we just purchased a lot on our own. I actually got most of it on Black Friday and boy did I get some good deals!

  • My shower is April 10th.  No theme... my mom and aunt are throwing the shower for me, and my mom's opinion is basically "Ugh, don't tell me you want decorations".  So, there's that.

Also, for those of you who asked for books in lieu of cards... I'm trying to come up with some wording that would make it clear the book is optional, but we'd appreciate it if it happened.  Basically, my mom finds asking for books instead of a card gift grabby, so I'm hoping that with wording showing it's clearly optional, she'll let me get that through.

    I was thinking maybe:
"[DH] and [arj] would love to get started on Baby's library!  If you'd like to help, please feel free to bring a favorite children's book in lieu of a card."

    Thoughts?

  • @arj14 I think that wording is appropriate and doesn't sound gift grabby at all.
