Baby names?

Re: Baby names?

  • @LadySamLady I feel so wishy washy too! I can't imagine being dead set on a name... Sort of jealous of all these ladies who are. We have 2-3 names that we like a lot, but nothing that we LOVE. Does that mean that none of them are right? We've decided to wait and finalize when we see him...Hopefully maybe we'll have an epiphany or something. lol.

I'm here too.  I like a lot of names but I don't like any of them enough.  I've gone through every boy name on this thread and said "Cute...but nah. Not quite right."

@pascal86 I floated the name of a previous pet too!! He was called Aidan and I love that name :)  My husband said he had no problem using the same name as the cat, but he didn't love the actual name itself :(
  • We are having a little girl and we are currently debating between:
    Lilly
    Zoey
    Riley
We both LOVE Riley but our last name starts with the R and then the long-i sound and I am worried that there is just too much alteration.  We are also stuck on middle names but some that have been thrown around are Nicole, Grace, and Katherine.

  • For those people who have found out gender, have you started immediately referring to your baby by the name you have chosen, if you have settled on one?We found out today we're having a girl and my husband has already started calling her by the name we chose...but I find it weird. I also don't want to accidentally slip and tell someone the name before she's born. So I'm sticking to "baby" and "she" for now. Thoughts?
  • @ayeshaohara we haven't decided on a name so we call her "baby" and "she" for the most part. I have just started to try out our favorite name from time to time to see how it feels and it is definitely weird to say it out loud but good weird!! I'm actually pretty envious of anyone who has decided on a name at this point, I'd love to start thinking of her by name!
  • My husband loves the name Locke for a boy as a first name. Locke means Lives by the stronghold (we are taking this figuratively rather than literally). I can think of a million names that would do well if it was a middle name, but can't think of a middle name that goes with Locke.

Suggestions? Extra points for a good meaning because I look up the meaning of every name :)

  • Any thoughts on Badr (BAH-der)? It's an Arabic name (for DH's heritage), the short staccato names sound better with our last name. It's very uncommon in the US but we like the way it sounds and gives a nod to the family in the middle east.

KissOfApproval I think River is semi-popular but  there wouldn't be too many kids in the class with that name, it's not like Ava, Olivia and Sofia right now.

AliciaD39  Locke sounds very Anglo to me so I would pair it with something similar and maybe a name with more syllables. I like Locke Alexander, Locke Sebastian, Locke Jameson , Locke William...
  • Lusitano8  is there another way to spell it? It not a bad name, especially given the heritage, but one that he will definitely have to correct people on for the rest of his life most likely. Even the way you spelled it out phonetically would work IMO

  • I guess I will participate now lol... it was 100% going to be Lincoln for a boy, buuut we are having a girl.

I love the name Cordelia nn Cora. DH doesn't. I don't seem to really like much else.

I'll have to thoroughly look through all the girl suggestions in this thread!
  • @kami09 I think girls names are the hardest!

    I like Badr:)

But also, with Locke (which I also love: John Locke is not a bad fellow to be named after!): what about alliteration?  Locke Lucas [Lastname]?  Locke Louis, Locke Logan...
  • Well we found out we were having a boy!! And I think we will be going with Leo Michael♡
  • Our daughter will be Tessa Phoenix. Tessa because I just love it. It means Reaper which is technically what my DH's job is called and Phoenix because it means to rise from the ashes and start again. We dated 8 years ago, broke up, both got married and divorced, followed by more crappy relationships but then met back up in 2013 and the rest is history! We tried family names but couldn't make them work so we just stayed away. But I love the story behind her name!!

Are you more attached to the nn Cora? Because you could do Coraline or just Cora as her name.

I have the envelope with the ultrasound results in my possession. Just have to wait till
Chrismas morning to open it! Our boy name is set, but DH hates every girl name in existence, so this is my pick for a girl.

    Boy: James Ellis
    Girl: Rose Evangeline

Ok, so I'm a college prof and I taught at an elite school last year, where all the students are (you know) going to be successful and they were also the best students I've ever had and I loved them.

So many of the girls, though, had names typically gendered male!

E.g. : Jordan, Chapman, Lincoln, Emerson, Ryan, Carson, Chandler, Riley, Jackson, Kaufman, Killian, Hollis, Ellis, Toby, Anderson, and even a Thomas!

I mention the elitism because so often these "unusual" name choices are seen as holding people back, but that is absolutely not the case when you give girls "boy" names.

Might this be a possibility for your husband?
Wow, I can't believe there were so many girls with typically male names. Its funny that you brought this up since we JUST talked about this last night after seeing Star Wars. We love that Ray is a strong female character who can kick ass, but why give her a typically male name? Can't she be feminine AND strong?
Male names on girls is kind of a pet peeve for both of us....
It all worked out though since we found out yesterday we are having a boy, so James it is! :)

No, I would actually call her Cordelia. I just know my family would need a nn option lol
  • Just how popular is the name River right now?? I originally thought this was our name for Boy or Girl.... but I have this strange feeling its becoming, or already is, super popular (not that that should totally matter.... but..... is my child's class gonna have 5 rivers....both boys and girls??)

But when the advise was given "say the name out loud....even Yell the name" to see if its a name you like or think you could live with...the only name I enjoy yelling is River! (i also think it passes the resume test pretty well IMO) lol

And my girl name thus far is Brooklyn and I don't totally feel comfortable yelling that one either! haha (not sure how much yelling you do as a parent...but.....??)

    Boys name:
    River Hayes (H last name)

    Girls names:
    Brooklyn Belle
Brooklyn River (<-----thats a lot of water tho!)

    I like River!

  • We found out we are having another boy. Our son is Arthur and we call him Artie. We LOVE it. However it took forever to come up with it and we didn't even commit to it until the day he was born. So I don't know how we will come up with another boy name!

  • Emma Jaye

We found out we are having a girl and have more or less decided on Emma, which I have loved for years and it works for my husband as E is the initial he wanted to use to name the baby after his late grandmother. We still need to figure out a middle name but since we have a very common last name I want to do something a little unique. Right now I am thinking of Jaye (which I may or may not have made up, but I figure it is simple and sounds pretty).  My husband doesn't like it but I find if enough time goes by he forgets he didn't like something and ends up suggesting it :)
  • Connor Joel
  • We settled for Leah Marie!! Both of our moms have Maria in their names, so we are honoring them with Marie. My son's name is Lucas Carlos. Both of our dads have Carlos in their name too :)
  • Can't remember if I posted in here or not since we found out LO was a girl and decided on her name... But we decided to go with Clara Noelle. :)
  • We've finally agreed on Hazel or Malcolm. No clue on middle names yet!
  • It's official! We have settled on a name! We aren't using the name yet though because we don't want family to know (and comment) till she is born. We have a backburner name that DH loves but i'm only 90% there and we will likely use if we have a second girl down the line.

Official name: Lucine Seta (nn Lucy)
    Backburner name: Sierra Kathrine
  • @Kurrant - Sierra is the best I've come up with so far, but I'm not 100% on it. Especially since my husband is getting more and more set on Rae as a middle name (his is Ray, and both his dad and granddad have Raymond as FN), and I really don't like the way Sierra Rae sounds. The Rs get smashed together too easily and it sounds like one word.

I've always LOVED naming my pets, but not enjoying this whole thing where I have to figure out another person's name that they'll have for their entire life. I don't feel bad if I give my pet a name that's kind of dumb, but this feels like so much pressure.
  • I agree about the Rs in Sierra Rae. . . Very RuhRuhRuh.  I also agree with the naming of a person being quite tough.  DH hates all of my favorites. . . Alice, Ivy, Mabel, Marion and the list goes on. Lucine is the only name on my 'love it' list that he actually agrees with so it wasn't too bad to pick. For a week or two I would say "So we are set on Lucine?" and he would say "Well I think I like Sierra more but you don't like it"  It wasn't until he actually used the name for a day that he actually admitted that he was sure about it.
  • would love to get opinions on our name dilemma: long story (semi) short, at Thanksgiving, before we found out we were having a boy, the whole family was talking boy/girl names. my MIL (who is strongly opinionated) made a couple of comments along the lines of "wouldn't it be weird to name the baby after a grandparent and give a kid an old person's name?" (which was awkward for a few reasons, none the least that my brother who was in attendance is named after my dad's dad, not to mention that people do that all the time). I think she knows from previous conversations (pre-pregnancy) that my DH and I have Harry on our shortlist, the name of DH's paternal grandfather.

well, now that we know it's a boy, Harry is indeed at the top of our shortlist but my DH doesn't want to upset her by naming our child something his mother is opposed to. we aren't planning on sharing the name before the baby is born, but I suggested to him that since we both love the name, it's important that he broach the subject with her privately to get clarity on her feelings (knowing that if he doesn't talk to her the name can't be on our list anymore). the issue is that I'm pretty sure I'm going to be livid if she gets veto power over the name when no one else gets any input.

    any advice?

It is really nice of you and your H to be so considerate of how your MIL would feel about the name you choose for your baby. I'm not that nice. In my opinion, if you and your H love Harry and it is meaningful to you both, then your MIL's opinion shouldn't matter. It doesn't sound like she is opposed to Harry, but was just saying that she thinks it is weird to give a baby an old person's name. Naming a baby after a grandparent is very common and a beautiful way to honor a family legacy, could she really think it is that odd?

  • @LadySamLady thanks for the response! To clarify: 1. I'm actually not that nice either and really only want DH to broach the subject to get the name back on the list (he's the one who is considerate of her feelings). 2. MIL made a few more comments related to the name Harry that were unflattering, including pronouncing it in a horrible accent, etc. that led us to believe she doesn't like the name beyond her veiled comment about thinking it's weird to name a baby after a grandparent. We felt she was just trying to get her point across without saying outright that she doesn't want us to name the baby Harry. MIL is really a piece of work.
  • @babyfmama ahhhhh I see. I would be super annoyed if I were you!

  • I'm SO ANNOYED I can't even tell you. I'm afraid that when H has the convo with her she won't want to tell him not to name his son that but she'll indicate that she's not a fan and he will want to honor her wishes. my hope/prayer is that she backs off and he's still open to using the name.

@babyfmama I agree with @LadySamLady. If you both love the name, go for it. I'm generally the people-pleaser when reasonable within my family, but I'm not willing to bend my parental choices to theirs. MIL got to name your DH, now it's your turn. Most likely, when the baby is here, all anyone is gong to say is how great he is/how cute/how amazing, etc. If she really has the attitude to bring up the name after the fact, then she's a special breed. ;)

eta: I know you're not soliciting opinions on the name itself, but I do like the name Harry. I think it's classic and cute.
  • @kbrands7 thank you!! I love it too :)
  • My husband and I had been pretty set on both a girl and a boy's name, but then we found out we were having a boy. Since both of our fathers passed away recently we were going to pay tribute to them and name him Jeffrey Mark. We also aren't planning on sharing the name beforehand. However, at Christmas Eve my grandmother came up with this idea and I just know that if we went with it for the rest of her life she will go around telling people that she named our baby. So we opted to move both names to middle names and are now considering Roland as a first name. My husband is a huge Stephen King fan and is also an English teacher so he has been obsessed with the name since reading the Dark Tower Series years ago.

Is anyone else considering going with 2 middle names?
  • @KDennis202 my ex had two middle names. question though, does it really matter that much whether your grandma thinks she was the first one to come up with the idea? I don't think that would change my mind on the name. think about how you'll feel 5, 10, 15 years down the road. if you like the name and want to honor your fathers (which I think is beautiful) you should do that.

@babyfmama You clearly have never met the woman. >:)
  • We've had the names picked for a while. We found out we are having a boy so his name will be Maddox Dixon (Dixon is my DH's late grandfather's name).

If we were going to have a girl her name would have been Zoe :) We hadn't picked a middle name yet.
  • I jinxed it by saying its official. DH woke up this morning and said "I'm not sure about Lucine" so now we are back to a list....
Lucine, Alice, Charlotte, Sierra, or Layla. *sigh*
