I actually don't believe in blackout curtains for babies. Baby needs to learn to sleep anywhere and anytime not just when it's dark and cosy. We have curtains that will dim the room but not black it out for that reason.
We have blackout curtains in our whole house and I LOVE THEM, Not necessarily for blocking the light, but for blocking the drafts from the windows better than anything else.

We didnt have them at first and had lots of trouble with naps. (My 14 month old still only takes 30 min naps) I feel like sleeping is such a learning process that a little help in the beginning won't necessarily mean they will never be able to sleep when it's light out.

We didn't do blackout curtains either for a very similar reason. We spend a lot of time outside in the summer so DD needed to know how to sleep when it was light out and not just dark and in her crib. Considering she was 3 months when our outside a lot summer began, I'm very glad.

We are having a boy, and, even though I think it is somewhat cliche, we are going with a nautical theme for our nursery. It makes sense for us, though, because DH and I are both sailors, and we're hoping this LO takes on our passion for it, too! Also, it isn't too juvenile of a theme that he will outgrow it right away. I want to go with classic navy and white with pops of color, maybe nautical flags spelling out his name (when we pick one). I just don't want to go overboard (pun intended!) with the sailboats, etc. Just a few here and there.
We haven't actually started yet, but we are hoping to clean out our home office and start on it after the first of the year. I'll post more pics when we get started, but this is kind of what we're going for:
Edited (twice!) because I'm still trying to figure out this new Bump system.
So classic. And you can do lots to this idea to make it your own!
We're going the mint (super light/muted, not bright), golds/tans, and pops of peach route for our little girl's room. First step is finding the perfect light mint color and we'll go from there!

Yeah - I got curtains for insulation, so they're like blackout curtains but I got white ones, so they just block out any bursts of light, keep things pretty dark (especially when blinds are down), but not blackout. I don't know what my parents did for me as an infant, but I grew up in a house that was pitch black and dead silent at night, and it has made it SO hard as an adult to adapt to different sleeping situations!
Do you think themes have to make logical sense? We're doing a yellow and grey nursery, but will have elephant and fox themed accents. I had some one tell me that makes no sense because elephants and foxes don't live together in the wild. To which I replied "...So?" I fail to see the issue.

I would have replied, they're both animals. It makes sense. Seriously who would've thought of that? It's your baby, your room. You can do whatever you wish. It sounds good to me

My understanding of children is that they have no imagination whatsoever, are extremely literal, and very upset by things that don't logistically make sense. Your child will grow up confused and angry at the world. PS. How do you expect to have an elephant theme at all when elephants don't even fit inside nurseries in real life? This is why I'm sticking to a strict crib and diaper themed nursery.

I am doing a color theme of aqua with a bit of yellow and having all kinds of animal accents: elephant, giraffe, turtle, lions, sea horse, lamb, etc.. My cousin said I needed to pick ocean or jungle theme, but dh and I wanted it this way. So I'm saying our theme is a non-theme of aqua/turquoise animals.

Well actually.....there are foxes in Savannah Africa, although not red foxes. But there are red foxes in Asia, and their distribution does overlap with that of Asian elephants. So I'm sure at some point in the history of the world, a fox and an elephant have crossed paths.
I'm reusing almost everything from previous babies & hand me downs. I'm doing a cloud theme but it's going to be very toned down because we're setting up in the master bedroom. (It's the only bedroom downstairs. I get episiotomies and can't get upstairs for a while.) We dry cleaned the curtains and put them back up, and built the crib. Now I need move my office desk and files to another room and get a glider. Some kind of changing area might happen, but last time I got by with a pad on the bed.

LOL! Crib and diaper themed nursery for the win. Edit: I don't know why the quote box got weird. Edited to make clear above was quote.
@kbrands7 thank you! I need to pick up samples of each, but thinking of doing the lighter route - is the color very bright looking in your dining room? I want the more muted/light route of mint so it's not overpowering.

I'd definitely recommend doing samples! It looks like a light mint in our room, but it depends on how bright or dark the room is too.
Now that we know it's a girl my vision has changed a bit. I still like the idea of pops of vibrant color- yellow, Aqua, purple- but I want to ground it in coral and greys. And some elephants because who doesn't love and elephant!
Starting to pack up the room and get the current furniture moved out today. Next weekend DH said he's fixing up the walls (fixing any holes and stuff) then ripping out the baseboards to get ready to paint. 99% sure we have the floor picked and Sunday we're going to go down and get some paint samples. Yay progress!
In case any of you haven't found this out... If you're planning to get a rocker or glider for the nursery. Prepare for an 8-12 week wait! I found this crazy and started to panic. Everywhere we went it was the same thing. Luckily we went to buybuy baby and found one we fell in love with and it was actually in stock! Start looking ASAP.
My husband and I ended up driving and calling all over central VA trying to find a target that had the dresser we wanted- that just so happened to be on clearance- which is honestly why we wanted it. No luck- we ended up ordering one from amazon because it was cheaper that the one at Target when it was full price. We also learned that Target is not allowed to sell the furniture they display because they have to drill holes in the bottom to attack them to the display. Instead they have to destroy them/throw them away. That bothers me an insane amount.
Emptied the bookshelf in what is to be the nursery and did some major purging. Also emptied out the closet except for a few things DH will need to get, took everything off the walls except for one thing. Now the room looks a mess bc all the stuff from my desk and bookshelf are kinda just sitting in piles on the floor until the furniture is moved into DH's office space we will now be sharing.
I also think maybe (big maybe) I might have gotten DH to decide on a crib. So yay.
And nursery update related - I had a moment when I had to take my running medals from my medal rack off the wall today. When I started running a few years back it was a huge deal to me... No one besides DH ever believed I could run a half marathon or marathon. I think I just got really sad that I've kinda given it up for awhile, but DH came in and knew why I was crying bc he noticed them off the wall. And then comforted me and said 'You did this once and proved everyone wrong. You most certainly can do it again, only this time you'll have an extra cheerleader rooting for you'. Needless to say I cried more, but I do feel better now.

This is what we've got so far. DH was stoked to paint the nursery first thing when we moved in so he got that done and I adore the color. My mom came to help us move and she and I did a lot of antique shopping, we got the rocking chair for $48, the table next to it for $15, the ladder/shelves for $25. I'm going to re-cover the foot stool and make a pillow for behind the back on the rocking chair. My sister is painting some pallet wood pieces with farm animals on them and those should be here in the next month. It's fun to see it all come together!

@yogahh thanks! It was a steal. I was anticipating spending at least a couple hundred for a rocker or glider, this one is surprisingly comfy. Love the crib too!!
We ordered our nursery furniture this weekend, and it should be here in about a month...which means we have 4 short weeks to clean out that room! The furniture color wasn't what I originally had in mind, but I fell in love with it when I saw it in the store. For some reason, the pieces look greenish in the pictures from the website, but they are actually gray. We will be doing blue walls with white wainscoting and navy, white, and nautical accents (see navy and white bedding set from our registry website in bottom picture). We picked up some paint samples yesterday. I can't wait to get started!
This is what we got so far. We first wanted to add wainscoting, but the room would be too white, no contrast from furniture. Saved time, but we have other projects in mind to personalize the room. Curtains hung, dresser up, some art, missing a nice armchair since this one belongs to our bedroom and doesn't really fit in. Can't wait to work on the canopy above the crib and pick some nice bedding from pottery barn. I love sitting in this room and just daydream!
@caterin wow! Looks so beautiful! Love it all. Those frames above the dresser are gorgeous! I think you could definitely do white wainscoting too by the way...it's ok if it's all neutral. Colour will creep in in other ways. Our nursery is going to be very neutral as well even though we know it's a girl. I'm not surprised you love being in that room...I would too!

Looks amazing!!! Where did you get the sheep gym/playpen thing? They're so hard to find in neutral colors!
I'm going to do another update on Thursday when the dresser we ordered comes but some of the artwork just got delivered and I'm super excited about them so I didn't wanna wait until Thursday to post pics!

Tell your friend that
Next step is paint (grey) and I think we need some loose rugs cause the tiles are a bit boring.
DH and friend assembled the furniture yesterday and it 'only' took about 6 hours

Everything will be in primary colors to match (way harder to find for babies than I expected!)

that's the crib I have too!! Love your rocker!
