I'm wondering when they stop eating every 2-3 hours? LO is still up exactly every 2 hours on the dot for night feedings. She goes right back to sleep after but I would love to sleep more than 1.5 hours at a time! She's 6 weeks and 3 days.
Question: does anyone know what it means when LO kind of pecks at the boob but doesn't latch? At times I think my little guy just wants to play and doesn't actually want to eat...he's getting enough since he produces enough I'm just curious if anyone else has experienced this and/or if anyone knows what it means!
@jdal1206 my little guy does it too. And he usually has a smile or happy look on his face when he does it so I assume he's just playing.
If he had an angry or upset look I would assume he's having problems latching for some reason. But for my LO its usually just a playful peck (the angry pecks come when he's hungry and I'm holding him in front of my boob but have my shirt on still... "Mom, I know this is where the food comes from. Why can't I get it?!?")

Cecily does this when she's done eating and tired sometimes. She'll pull off and then refuse to latch and just peck at my boob and gets mad. I'll shift her to my shoulder and pat her and she calms and often falls asleep. I have an oversupply so she can't comfort nurse. I think it's reflex that when I put her at my nipple, she roots, even if she's not hungry.
I need help from all you pumping pros- I have a medela PIS, which I love, except I cannot figure out how not to get milk all over my shirt/pants when I am taking my flanges off! Milk collects in the wide flared part of the flange, under my nipple, and it always drips on me when I am done pumping. I don't know if this happens to everyone, or if it's because of my forceful letdown and oversupply. Any pro tips to help?

Yup, this happens to me! Not really a pro but I found that when I lean forward and lift the top of the flanges up and tilt them away, then maybe only a drop spills, if that!

Lol, this is a real problem when pumping at work. I keep a burp cloth handy and use a hands free pumping bra. I put the burp cloth under when the flange connects and disconnect it while still wearing the pumping bra and the milk collected there runs into the burp cloth. I run the burp cloth around the inside of the flange before moving it. I also keep the burp cloth below the flange as I remove it from the breast.
@grapesoda1111 my 7 week old is also still waking this frequently. I hope it stops soon because I go back to work a week from today. I wish I had an answer.

We EP and it's beyond exhausting. I'm not ready to be done just yet but we may only do this for another month or so. My question is what is the proper way to stop BF? I know you can't just stop all at once because my friend did and it was very painful. How long should you go without pumping or BF each time?

Mine is the same, she is not predictable at all! During the day she'll eat anywhere from every 1 to 4 hours (8 weeks). At night it's weird she sleeps in decreasing increments-- her first is always her longest, usually 3.5-4 hrs, then each stretch seems to decrease by about an hour till morning, it's exhausting!
@jdal1206 yep, mine does the pecking thing too, like pp have said, I think it's usually because she's done eating and wants to play, if she's cranky and doing that it's usually because she's gassy.

When I stopped pumping and BF DS I dropped one feed or pump at a time. Once my body adjusted to the reduced demand (about a week) I would drop another feed or pump. It took me a couple months to stop completely, but I was in no rush. It was pain free.

I'm sorry it's so rough for you. The best way to stop is to pump less and less each time and drop a session one by one. You can slowly do that over the course of s few weeks so your body adapts and you're not in pain. Things like peppermint help dry up milk too. And you can put cabbage leaves on your boobs to help.
@dramaphile 1. Lean forward 2. I place a muslin burp cloth beneath both breasts before removing them especially if i am wearing something i care about.

My LO also seems to sleep in decreasing increments. Does your LO eat less as the night goes on? Right now I'm on the second feeding of the night and she only ate from one side and fell asleep while nursing. So I think in my case she just eats less at later feedings meaning she gets up sooner for the next one.
@jdal1206 mine does this too but instead of pecking she shakes her head back and forth with her mouth open and gets really mad. This is always after nursing for some period of time. If I switch sides she latches fine and eats for a bit but then does the same thing. I think she just gets tired.

This! My lo shakes his head violently! I sometimes think hes going to hurt his neck, poor thing.
I've been getting some shooting pains in my breast at random times, sometimes during, before or after feedings. Could this be a sign of thrush? There are no other symptoms on me or LO... Anyone else experience this?

That happened to me a lot last time and occasionally this time. I chalk it up to just the milk moving through the ducts. I never had any issues.

I get them every now and then also. I think it's normal.

Yes and I was wondering the same thing. Its on both sides but more on the side lo just fed on/feeding on. I agree with previous posts though I assumed it was milk moving through ducts.
My LO is 8 weeks old and is discovering the world around her. For about 2 weeks she has been unhappy unless she's being held facing outward. Well now she doesn't want to nurse because she can't be held outward and nurse. I've tried without the nipple shield, with the nipple shield, putting milk on her lips/under nose, getting the room dark and quiet and it makes no difference. The last couple times I fed her she would only nurse after eating formula from a bottle for a couple of minutes. I can't pump. I just get dribbles and she just screams if she's not being held and walked around so even if I could pump I'd have no time to do so. She doesn't like being put in a carrier either. Any suggestions other than just switching to formula? Please?
Hmm... A dark room always helped us when my daughter started getting too distracted. Have you tried laying down to nurse? Maybe a change of position. Laying on your side might allow her to see some things still.
What about trying when she's starting to get sleepy?
I would get on the Kelly mom website and look into nursing strikes and distracted nursing. They are always the best for ideas.

She usually eats from both sides, but I don't really keep track of times, so I'm not sure if she's eating less therefore leading to shorter sleeping time. I'm so delirious by 4 am I'm not really paying attention! a few times though I've tried bringing her into bed with me after my husband gets up, we side nurse then fall asleep and she seems to sleep much longer

I feel like I've tried everything. Laying down, walking, different positions. She's so stubborn. I looked on Kelly Mom for distracted nursing, but I will look for nursing strikes. Thanks! You're always there for us first timers.
@grapesoda1111 does your LO eat on both sides with each feeding? My Pedi suggested letting LO get a little upset...not be so quick to BF especially at night so he will be more awake and eat more so he will be full longer. I was getting 2.5 - 3 hours of sleep at night and since I started letting LO fuss a little more (~10 days) he has been sleeping about 30 mins longer. I even had a few 4 hour nights! But like PP I only get the one big sleep and then it decreases. Not sure if it's worth the fussiness (and continued lack of sleep for me) but hoping the trend continues and improves. I'd love to get to 4 hours at night like some PP. DS1 ate constantly so either my milk isn't very filling or my LOs have big appetites.
Whoah! As much as I appreciate the sleep my baby just slept for 6 hours straight. We've never gone past 4. He only woke up because I woke him up to feed him. He ate and passed out again. I'm worried since he only had one wet diaper in that stretch. ( he also peed right after I fed him) Does this happen sometimes now that he's 7 weeks or does this deserve a call to his Dr? My mom did mention he hardly slept while I was at work 9-4 and might be a little tired.
Eta: now that I had time to wake up I realize it has only been 4.5hrs.

No she doesn't. She won't even eat on both sides during the day, she gets her fill in about 20 minutes Her slee cycles also decrease in the night. Too funny. I have done that too...forgotten I already woke up to feed her and thought lo had gone ages without eating!
Tonight we had our first 7hr stint and she only woke up because I roused her! I didnt feel comfortable waiting any longer. My LO is 8 weeks on saturday.

My LO slept 7 hours last night too! And when she woke up she was just laying there. She didn't cry or anything. She ate, but didn't act like she was starving or anything. She is just so overtired from refusing to sleep during the day.
@doodleoodle I was shocked my lo wasnt ravenous! She politely ate and didnt guzzle. Glad to know that is normal and also glad she wasnt silently starving.
My LO has started sleeping longer stretches this last week since my mom bought us a cosleeper "best" that goes between my husband and I. We've had a few stretches lasting 5-7 hours. And I've been sleeping better because he's close enough that I can see him and don't have to move to comfort him if he starts stirring.
Sadly last night we "only" got 4.5 hours and then he would not go back to sleep. The problem is I don't know if these sleep stretches are going to last but I'm worried about my milk supply dwindling at night (first 2 nights I pumped but hadn't these last few nights because I've been out of it and super tired)... Should I keep pumping or is keeping this longer sleep stretch up for a week a good sign that he'll keep it up?
I've wondered that too! My LO ranges from 5hr to now 7 hr streches at night. I am worried I dont feel engorged in the morning. Any second or third time moms have advice on this? Should you pump or just enjoy thr extra zzzs?

With DS once he started sleeping longer periods, I would pump right before I went to bed. This caused me to end up with an oversupply (and a good freezer stash). If your supply is well established I think it is safe to just get the extra sleep. If you are worried about your supply I would pump last thing at night or first thing in the morning after the baby eats.
I freaked myself out so much I couldn't go back to sleep! I'm so used to him going to sleep at 8:30pm but I had forgotten that yesterday he decided he wanted to stay up and practice talking instead! I fed him and handed him to my husband at 10:30 still awake. That's why I freaked when I woke up at almost 3 and he was still asleep on my husband's chest.
On a side note: I have been sick for a couple of days and apparently so tired I didn't notice I've been basically only feeding my baby from one side. Only realized it because I looked in the mirror this morning and one of my boobs looks tiny while the other one is massive!

I keep a hair elastic on my wrist and each I feed I change it to the other wrist so I remember which breast to use next. I also heard you can use a safety pin in your bra, but after poking myself a few times in the middle of the night I decided the safety pin was not for me.

The hair tie is the best idea over heard!! I use a breast pad. I put it on the side I just fed off of because next time ill leak on that side. So whichever side doesn't have the pad is the side I feed that time.

Anyone using coconut oil for chapped/dry nipples? My left boob is really chapped and laniole cream isn't cutting it Any other suggestions or recommendations would be helpful Tia
