Re: Official Nursery Thread

  • Well, I already posted this in the announcement post for nursery ideas, but since that's not really looked at, I'll repost it here... I'm very excited about our nursery plan. We haven't set it up yet, but we're doing a lion king/ jungle theme with espresso colored furniture and some sage hues, along with the colors of a few choice items from the lion king set. Our focus, animal-wise, is centered on lions, monkeys, and foxes (because my fiancé adores foxes), so I guess it's not quite the traditional jungle motif. We're having a boy, but I'm striving to make most of it gender neutral. I wanted to paint the nursery wall, but since we haven't moved yet, I'm not even sure if I'll be allowed to by the landlord, let alone if I'll even have the time. We've already nicknamed baby Little Lion Man and Lion Cub because of the theme. Once we move and get it set up, I'll post pictures here, but it'll be a while.

  • We got our crib assembled last week (it was actually super easy and only took 15 minutes!). Looks a little sad without mattress or any bedding though LOL. Will be putting up some framed prints and hopefully a mobile of some sort later on.

Other side of the room is the dresser, which will double as changing table. ABC wall and mirror are up on that side! Baby is sharing a room with my youngest stepson so there's not much room for anything else in the room (not pictured is his bunk bed, toy storage, and armoire- no closet in the room).

Excuse the horrible lighting. This room is open to below and the light fixture in the room itself is AWFUL.

  • I have been toying with a animal theme also… more like a baby animal theme… But also wondering about a robot theme. Totally different, I know. :) But may end up going with baby animal!

We chose our furniture today; now waiting for some temporary wallpaper samples to finalize the color palette and then start painting and decorating!

Whoa, you're way ahead of the game! You go, girl!
Did you custom paint that dresser? Looks cute!

  • We did the nursery in tan, brown and light blues. We've painted the room (will post pictures when we get a better light fixture...the lighting is horrible) and received our nursery furniture last night from babies r us. I'm a little upset because the dresser was crushed on one corner so we had to load it up and take it all the way back to the store which is 45 mins away. Plus they had to order it so we have to go all the way back and pick it up.
  • I'm really jealous. We can't do anything for DS1 and DS2's room until we move, which probably won't be until early March. DH is in love with a blue toddler bed at IKEA for DS1. I'm thinking about painting the crib a different color and making the space very neutral, even though both of the kids are boys. I just don't like the idea of having a "baby" theme clashing with whatever my toddler likes. I do plan on making both boys some of all art, similar to what I did in DS1's nursery.

  • @thaisac1, thanks! And yes! We bought a used pine bunk bed and dresser a little over a year ago when we moved to our current house. They are very solid, but reeked of smoke, so I stripped them and re-stained them. They still didn't look all that nice due to dings and whatnot, so my project this summer was using chalk paint to redo them. The shabby chic works a little better with that paint, and it gave me something to do to keep my mind off babies when we were TTC.

Aww, thanks! Chalk paint is pretty hard to mess up, thankfully. I'm pretty happy with how it all turned out, although there's a teeny little part of me that's sad I can't buy all the ridiculous pink things for baby girl :P

  • I really want to start on this LO nursery but I'm indecisive on a theme plus we need to get renovations done on our new guest bedroom before the current room can be emptied. Too much stuff in a small house! We're thinking Under the Sea or Pond theme (frogs/ducks). DH is zero help. We're getting grey furniture so it needs to coordinate with that. DD nusery was woodland theme/birds. Super cute. I'm thinking this LO's room might get the shaft. Anyhow here is DD nursery.
  • We are doing a coral/gray/gold woodland (deer) theme for DD2. I am super anxious to put together her crib that arrived last week. Only down fall is the nursery is DD1 playroom as of right now and we need to slowly transition it so DD1 doesn't think she is getting slighted. But I have a handful of decorations I want to get out of the closet. Here is a picture of the quilt that inspired DD2's nursery.

We are doing the theme oh the places you will go but we want to do it as a cultural/adventure thing and include books on different cultures. We just do not know how to do it without looking like a multicultural fair vomited in the room. I know we want to include a global like the one attached in the picture. We purchased the crib on cyber Monday and putting it up this week

    This is awesome!
  • We are waiting until after Christmas to begin anything in his room. We have to get new carpet and paint the walls so that's first. We are going with a giraffe theme with colors navy and a bright green. I can't wait to get all the furniture put in there and finish it! So exciting but we will busy up until the day he comes!

I just saw a globe like that (black with white, but minus the text) at TJ-MAXX in their "man gift" stuff.

@allaire314 I love the wall! So jealous, my DH didn't want to do that. Even if he said he would do it, it would still not even be started. I asked him to paint 1 wall gray and white striped when we moved into our house in September, it is still not even taped. I give up.

I'm dying to put the nursery together! But I won't be able to start until mid-February because our house addition won't be finished until then. But I'm going for a simple look that will grow with baby and any future younger siblings, something similar to this pic (but without the teepee).

Walls will be light blue, crib, rocker, and dresser/changing table will be from ikea.

  • @Brandi81012 DH made the comment yesterday that we even got it done before baby got here! Ha ha... he is notorious for starting projects and not finishing them, so I took the reigns on cleaning, conditioning and sealing the wood. That way all he had to do was use his power tools... it was a good balance that meant it would actually get done. Ha ha ha
  • SO and my brother got the nursery painted this weekend and it looks so good! Next up is staining the floors and then sealing them. Then we can build the crib, because it wont fit through the doorway, we have to build it in the room. Then I may try to convince SO that we need some kind of closet system.

  • @foutsixand2 Love your wood wall!
  • @fourtsixand2 I LOVE that antique piece and the room in general. I like you do not go with childlike nursery's either. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

We are doing a woodland theme too! Also using coral, but with yellow and green. So excited. We finished our barn wood (from DH's family ranch) accent wall this weekend! IT LOOKS AMAZING!!! Was so much work, but so worth it! Now that we have the wall done we can build the crib and dresser which have sadly been sitting in their boxes for a couple of weeks now.

Woah that's awesome! Here I am looking for stickers/ temporary wallpapers as an easy wall solution and them BAM, you actually make a wood wall! Very talented!
  • We just completed installing and staining our wood plank wall.  I love how it turned out.  It goes well with our round crib and new gilder.
My amazing sister refinishes antiques, so she had this children's wardrobe she refinished for me, which is where our little one's clothes will go until he outgrows it to the big closet.
We also refinished a gorgeous table with claw feet that we're making into the changing table - my amazing husband is building the changing pad frame to go on top.
We really wanted to use grown-up pieces, since I'm not really a fan of the typical childlike nursery themes, personally.  I think it's turning out well though we have a little left to do!  :-)
Awesome wall! You and @allaire314 are putting me to shame on the wall department. :)

Oh shush! Lol. I was lucky that my husband likes to take on these kinds of projects and was on board with the wall.  My sister put the idea in my head by doing a shiplap wall which turned out fantastic.  I have to say the plank wall was a tedious process from measuring to staining, but I think it's worth it and I'm excited about finishing the room up! :)

Thanks! I don't have any problems at all with the nurseries that are very childlike, but for me personally it wasn't something I wanted.  And we have saved a ton of money by not having to buy furniture pieces that would be obsolete in a couple of years anyway (changing table, etc), so it was a good way to have a 'grown up' space with 'grown up' pieces that we can re-purpose after our son gets a little older.  Thank you for the comments :-)

  • We went with a Parisian theme for DD. This little guy is gets nothing. Maybe a less girly version of the current room. Poor second kid.

I think they are going to share a room (it's big) but haven't decided. Might move DD to guest room. I like having a guest room but it only gets used maybe 12 weeks a year so I'm not sure it's justified. DD could sleep in baby's room when we have guests. If we have them share, we'd have to buy DD a bed and I kind of want to wait awhile.
  • Man you ladies are putting me to shame!  All I have done so far are new windows and new floors, they were desperately needed.  Hopefully we'll be painting soon, then I can order furniture.  We're also going with a neutral moon and stars theme, I may steal that wall idea @dayzchic9

The crib and dresser came in today and when I got home from work DH had the crib up!!!
It was a nice surprise :) I'll post a photo once we get the 50000 piece dresser put together when the last box gets here.
  • This is my inspiration! We are team green (but I don't like green or yellow so we are going with GRAY!) we will accent it with other items depending on if it is a boy or girl.
Also. DD will move to the other room (bc that is easier than moving the furniture) and baby will sleep in our room for a couple of months, so it will probably be May when we actually do the nursery.
  • littleredx2  I LOVE the green.
