Baby Monitors? Advice Appreciated

Hello moms, I am looking for a high quality video/wifi monitor system.. So that we can use our smart phones to check in on baby when either of us is out. Or while my hubby works, he can interact with us via audio/video. Must have feature for us.

There are SO many brands and models within each brand, it is seriously a headache to try and pick between them all. I have done research on the ones ive found interesting, but always find negative things like the batteries dont last in the monitor, or they overheat, poor reception, etc.

I have been eying the Motorola line.

Does anyone have experience with these type of monitors in particular? Any suggestions? Bad experiences with certain brands I should avoid?

Thanks in advance if anyone replies. :)

  • I'm sorry but I don't have any experience with those, however, my advice is more on reviews. There are going to great and horrible reviews for everything. Sometimes you just need to do your research for capabilities of the product and take your chance. Generally you can return the product if there is a defect. Also a great idea to get a protection plan, just to be on the safe side. Hope this helps.

  • I just have an audio monitor, so don't have a specific suggestion - But a good rule of thumb would be to buy a tech brand rather than a "baby stuff"
    brand.
  • I read an article where a man hacked into one of those monitors and was yelling at the baby. I don't trust those kind of monitors, I have a cheapy from Walmart and it works great with my son.

There are ways to secure the wifi connection. Most people use the password that comes with the router and don't take other steps to secure it. Is it 100% full proof no, but it increases the security.

@Elysia21 I've been trying to find information on this as well. Unfortunately, I'm just as lost as you are. However, our neighbor was the first one to tell us about the feature with using smartphones and everything. The next time we see him we'll as and I'm report back.
  • We use a Motorola monitor and I like it a lot. We've had it for two years with no complaints at all.
  • Not to add to the confusion, but we've had two Motorola monitors and they both stopped working within a few months. Graco brand NEVER worked. Right now we have a Samsung and it has lasted the longest and had the best picture quality of all we have tried. Best of luck to you!!

  • H and decided to get a security camera. It has infrared and a speaker.
It hooks to wifi, and isn't that expensive compared to some actual baby monitors.

If you go with a WiFi video monitor, please make sure the connection is secured. In a recent Consumer Reports article, a mother mentioned how she'd been anonymously emailed a photo of her baby from her monitor.

  • I'm trying to decide on a monitor as well. I don't feel like I need yet ANOTHER gadget to connect to my WiFi, but I am considering a video monitor. I think @musicmomma00 has great advice, go with a tech brand!
  • I love my Motorola monitor. I don't know if it has wifi connection or not but as far as the brand I have loved it. It has many great features and te customer service is wonderful to deal with as well.
I also agree with the first poster about reviews. There will always be positive and negative reviews. Pay close attention to the negative ones because a lot of times what others are complaining about are things that wouldn't bother you nearly as much.
  • I'm having the same issue- what should we buy? I keep reading Samsung is one of the best brands out there. It seems like the problem in many of these other brands is that the quality is good, but it just stops working in the middle of the night. i haven't heard that with Samsung. Stick with the techy brands, not baby brands. Baby Bargains (the book or website) is the best way to check out these kind of items.  Several mothers advised me that this is not an item you want to buy cheaply- intend on getting a nicer, more expensive brand.

I have the same exact requirements @elysia21.

    I just bought a Dropcam
    Pro ($250) to test out.

Pro: the best video quality (day and night) by far. Wide viewing angle so you don't have to pan/tilt. Super easy to connect to from web and phone.

Cons: because the video is only accessible via web or phone, it's great for your DH but I can imagine it's annoying at night when you have to wake up to check baby and unlock your phone, open app, etc. Also, it's not constantly on as a result,
so you get notified of movement, but it's just a typical phone notification. Not sure now traditional baby monitors work but a small phone notification doesn't seem sufficient if I'm not paying attention to my phone. Also gets very hot.

Gonna try out a few others, including Motorola and Samsung.

Anyone else have thoughts on dropcam?
  • I would just recommend one that displays the temp in the room and is video with a two way intercom. We have a Tommy Tippee which we've had now for over three years. It was the third monitor we bought. We kept returning the others, since they just didn't work for us.:)

And i heard you have to pay for it monthly right ?
  • I don't have any brand recommendations but I second the advice to go ahead and buy a nice monitor. Even though DD1 us not a baby anymore I still use it when she takes naps or if she is sick. I would otherwise just hover I am sure. I am getting a second one since they will sleep in different rooms for a couple years. I tend to give reviews a lot of weight when making purchases. I figure most people are busy and would only write a review if something was really bad. And omg if someone sent me a picture of my baby I would have to move! Scary!
  • I originally went with Motorola and changed to Samsung. Both devices received very good ratings in my research, but Samsung seemed to be a little bit better. If you haven't read Baby Bargains (2015 edition), I would suggest getting that book. It is a good guide for product ratings.
