Baby names?

Re: Baby names?

  • We've had our names picked out from as soon as we started TTC. My husband's father passed away about twelve years ago and so we wanted to honor his memory in the name, Paul. My husband also wanted to use my dad's name Roderick as a way of passing down a name and also it would give the baby the same initials as my husband which he liked instead of a junior.

So for a boy: Roderick Paul
And a girl: Pollie (maybe Paulie) Jean

We liked Pollie because it's a feminine version of Paul and then Jean is both mine and my mom's middle name

  • I posted before that I love the name Linus, but while my in laws were in town I mentioned it and they pronounce Linus as Leenus in Sweden. As in, rhymes with the male anatomy. DH prefers that pronunciation which is a deal breaker for me because kids are beyond cruel, let's not fuel the fire from the start.

Is it weird for us to use Linus but have half his family pronounce it a different way?
  • @khochanadel Didn't Zobrist name his baby girl MN Royal? I think its cute

My grandmother was Pauline (went by Polly) and I have always loved it.  It's also my sister's middle name.  Our final girls' name is Sonia Margaret, but I still secretly love Pauline.  :)

Poll: if you saw the name Lili, would you pronounce it "Lee-Lee" or "lily" (like the flower)?

@jjroxtx my daughter's name is Ruby Ann-Elyse & I also have a Maci Monroe (after Marilyn) & a Daizy J-Lynn. My poor son is named after his father & I really don't like it so I call him Brother as does everyone else we know. I love old fashioned names & this baby will be named
    Charlie Grace - girl
Charles ? - boy (but he'll go by Charlie)
Really hoping for a boy :)
Don't ask why (b/c I don't know) I'm waiting till baby #5 to name it after my Dad when I've wanted to all the other times.

I LOVE the name Charlie for a girl. Is it typical to just name her Charlie, or is it typically some longer name that gets shortened to Charlie? Like Charlene? That's all I can think of right now, but what other Char- names are there?

    Charlotte
    Charlize

  • We are having a boy! His name will be John Penn, and we will call him John Penn.

If we were going to have a girl, her name would be Mari Eloise, and called Mari Ella, or Mari Emilia, and call her Mari Emilia. Emil is my husband's name.

Our best friends are naming their little girl Addison Kate, and their son's name is Grayson Parker.
  • I've always wanted to name my first daughter Isabell (pronounced with a long e not I) after a friend I have from Spain but now im leaning more towards Madilynn, Adilynn or Emma MN will be Anita after my grandmothers MN
If it's a boy he will be named Zechariah George. In Hebrew Zechariah means "remembered by God" and George was my great grandfather's first name but my Grandfathers MN, whom I was very close to. My back up name is Eli or Mason. I'm pretty set on these names but I have a lot of friends who have changed their minds at the hospital so we will see :)! I find out January 5th what my LO will be!!

DH's great aunt is named Charlotte and one of her nicknames is Charlie. Personally I love that as a girls name choice but DH isn't a fan. :(

  • Girls: Katharyne Evolet.
    Victoria Quinn.
    Pheobe Jayne.

    Boy: Thorin Sebastian.
  • Poll: if you saw the name Lili, would you pronounce it "Lee-Lee" or "lily" (like the flower)?
I would assume Lily like the flower.
  • We picked our little girls name with our 1st to be Abbigayle Rose.
Then everyone named their daughter Some form of "Abby". So I vetoed it for the second baby and decided on Brooklynn Rose instead. DH actually prefers Brooklynn, which is great!

    We have 2 sons already
    Spencer Jacob
    Preston John

Jacob is my husband's name, family tradition that the boys get their fathers name as a middle name. Since I really don't like the name Jacob, we compromised and our oldest got Jacob and the 2nd got my grandfather's middle name.

    This time around we've chosen:
Brayden Joseph (mn is my deceased grandfather's name)
Brooklynn Rose (mn is my deceased grandmothers name)

We find out in about a month which name we'll use and I'm so excited!
  • We're pretty much back to the drawing board completely with names. My H and I are just so different in our approach that we don't agree on very much, and what we do agree on we like but don't love. I'm impressed with everyone's convictions about their name choices, I feel so wishy washy about everything!!
  • Names are hard.  We're having a boy...

    Colt Tracey
    Brooks Lee
    Beau Robert

Nooo idea what to do over here.  I'm hoping it just comes to me one day, haha.

Yes ben and julianna named their baby girl Blaise Royal. Not a huge fan of Blaise but they are adorable. Let it be known she stole my idea on Royal though :expressionless:

I don't know what we are having yet, our anatomy scan is on Tuesday and I can't wait! For some art reason I have a feeling it's a girl and for years I loved the name Sophia. The more I think about it, the more it makes me mad that there are so many Sophia's out there and it slowly pushes me away from it. The name Pauline really started growing on me. Any suggestions with a middle name? Pauline Sophia doesn't flow nicely to me, but Paulina Sophie does. Any other ideas?
  • @caterin - I might be a little biased, but my name rhymes with Pauline and my MN is Alicia, and I've always thought it flows really well. Pronounced Ah-lish-ah (should probably be spelled Alisha but whatever), not Ah-leesh-ah like most people, but I think either one works. Obviously don't expect you to use that, but just to help get the ideas flowing!
  • My daughters name has so much family significance but this time around not so much. Her name is Annalee Rose after my moms middle name (Ann) my dads middle name (Lee) and my DH moms middle name (Rose).

Girl: Adeline or Adelyn (we'll pronounce both like the second is spelled, so just debating on choosing that to avoid confusion) Middle name Elizabeth
Boy: Asher Michael (middle name still up for debate)
    Baby #2 EDD: May 13th!

  • Blood tests show that I am having a boy. Still only 15 weeks so, an ultrasound is supposed to show it.

We've decided our child's name will be Isaiah if it is indeed a boy (dont know how accurate the blood tests are). I'd like Daniel as a middle name, but hubs feels like I'm just hijacking everything :P
  • We're having a boy and decided weeks ago on the name Shea Romeo and we still love it.
  • We added another name to the girls list- Harper. I have loved it for years, but is it too trendy now? Our last name is the same as the main character on Girls. Is that too many H's??

IDK, my husband is CC, I'm a CC now that I'm married, and all we're talking about is C names... we're not really set on the alliteration thing, I think it will actually be kind of confusing if everyone in the family has the same initials... but we just keep coming back to it.

And as for the trendy thing, I personally will always stay away from the top 10 most common names on any list, but beyond that, I think it's way more important that you like it than to consider who else is getting named the same thing.

I should also add our cats names both start with an H. And our future dog will be an H. Maybe I should steer clear of the H's!

  • @yogahh - Haha definitely something to be aware of! I grew up going to school with three sisters that could have been triplets and they were all HH. It never seemed like a bad thing, you'll probably just get a few eyebrow raises from judgy-mcjudgersons who think that's too many Hs, but whatever. I have an H dog myself (Heathcliff)! ...and a Carly (more Cs!)

And on a somewhat related note, what is the consensus on naming your child after your dog? Or rather, giving it the same name? We lost our Pascal this past winter and I am still obsessed with the name (and we don't know gender but it can work for boy or girl). Is that super weird? What about for a MN?
  • @yogahh I love alliterations!

@Pascal86 I'm sort of bummed we used Birdie for our dog, because I love the name so much! It totally fits her but if I'd known my H would love it as much as I do for a human or a dog, I totally would have saved it!!

  • @LadySamLady - Yes! I got/named Pascal when I was 21, saving names for future babies was not on my radar at all! But he was the sweetest, most sensitive, and generally wonderful dog I've ever known, so as far as sharing names with dogs, I still feel like this is a good one! But not sure baby will feel that way.

My SIL is Carin. Her grandmother couldn't pronounce it and called her Karen. To this day she is called Karen to her family and friends from high school. Her husband, ILs, coworkers, other friends call her Carin.
  • @yogahh I think alliteration is fine (DH is a BB and has never had any issues with it). I think it only gets weird when the first and last name rhyme.

We've run into this too because of one of our dogs names! I liked it as a baby name but always assumed no one else would, until now! But I can't do it, it will always be the dog to me! But I wouldn't really side eye someone who did. In fact, I know a lady who names both her sons after former dogs of hers.
  • @sunshinebins - You're not the only one!! And you're right, the name will always remind me of my dog too, but I don't really see it any different than naming a kid after a grandparent or something - just another person (dog) I would be happy to be reminded of regularly!

I wouldn't name a kid after a pet although I joke about it! My cat that died two years ago (and I'm still grieving, he was just that amazing) was Henry. Now the name is so popular o keep telling DH we should name baby after him!

  • I had a cat named Mabel. It has always been a favourite name of mine and had her way back when I was adamant about not having kids. Too bad DH really doesn't like the name at all.

We have been talking about names quite a bit since we found out the sex and have come up with two girls names but aren't sure which to go with. We also still have our back up boy name for just in case. The US tech said she feels pretty confident it's a girl but when I got excited she said she could be wrong.

    Boy: Dean Clinton

    Girls: Lucine Seta
    Katherine Grace
  • We like the name Leona as a middle or first name for a girl and I think I like Leona Ray!

And SOMEONE PLEASE be honest but is Mordecai (like off the regular show lol) is a horrible boy name I've joked about it a lot with my husband but now I really like the idea of Mordecai Radar... to explain a little we named our pitbull pup that we got in march pre knowing baby would be on the way rigby which is Mordecai's best friend in the show..now does THAT make it weird? I kind of think it's cute because our baby will be growing up with rigby and I hope they become best friends...

Thank you! I just wanted honesty about it! So i appreciate it! It's silly but it's in reference to a cartoon that me and my husband watch together which we started watching at the beginning of our relationship..
  • We won't find out for about 3 more weeks if baby is a boy or girl, but I almost hope it's a boy simply for the fact DH and I agree on more boy names.  All the girl names I like are "old lady names" to him, and the names he has brought to the table are Lily and Lilliandra (gag).  Lily is fine, but if it's a girl the middle name is going to be Rose, and I feel like two flower names is just too much.

Maybe this has been discussed in this thread (not going to read through the last 10 pages, so ignore if it has been talked about!), but - favorite guilty pleasure names?  Not sure what mine is for a boy, but for a girl, it's totally Rebel.

  • Our original boy name list was Giovanni and Dante, with Giovanni as first choice. This was mainly because we didn't have a good middle name for Dante. Then I came up with the idea of using Maverick (I'm a big Dallas Maverick's fan) and my husband was sold.

I'm not going to write it in stone, but we're pretty sure our son's name will be Dante Maverick :)
