@kalanieileen MOST women are able to produce enough if they have the right support system and are able to establish breastfeeding early enough. A lot of times women won't respond well to a pump when they go back to work which is why a lot of people recommend pumping early on to start a supply and regulate being used to a pump. But then a lot of very natural sources say not to pump at all because it will produce oversupply. My thought is moderation of all approaches. Yes there are rare cases when women simply cannot produce enough, but if baby is healthy and mom feeds baby regularly the first few weeks, then good supply should be established. And if worse comes to worse, you'll formula feed, which is a great way to feed a baby! Formula IS good for babies. Maybe it's not "as" good as breastmilk, but have you ever heard of a child not thriving because they were properly fed, just with formula? No. If it weren't good for babies they wouldn't grow and thrive from formula, and it wouldn't be fda approved as the only other appropriate way to feed infants after mothers milk (despite what some people say about goat milk, it is not sufficient to replace formula or human milk).
You rock for saying this. I'm a fan of breastfeeding/pumping, but it just kills me to see moms who feel like failure for formula feeding. You're providing your child with nourishment. Mission accomplished.
It actually helped me going into breastfeeding knowing that the first 6-8 weeks are the hardest but then eventually it gets easier. I set short goals for myself and as I met them, the time between feedings grew and he became more efficient at eating so it took less time, etc. so I continues on. I was able to nurse for a year.
So while I don't think you should go into it thinking it's impossible, I definitely would have realistic expectations on it. It's hard work but it'll be worth it. (Formula feeding is fine too!)
I found taking a breastfeeding class with my husband was helpful.
Just wanted to vent… I am so sad about the world my baby boy will live in. The attacks in Paris and Beirut last week made me so sad to realize this is the 'new normal'…. France is already retaliating, and God knows what will come next. I pray for peace...
I'm a bit worried about breastfeeding but I'm TERRIFIED about giving birth! It sounds so scary!
This is what my mom told me that someone told her. Every single person you ever meet has been born. A woman gave birth to them. It will all be okay.
And epidurals are your BFF.
I wanted to kiss the anesthesiologist every time one came in because epidurals are amazing. I did learn I have a high tolerance for drugs and a pretty low tolerance for pain last time.

I agree. There are so many things that remind me every day what a terrible world we live in.

Nohemi Gonzalez?
I'm so glad someone on the board finally mentioned what's been going on. I've been refraining from doing it myself since no one else had, but I've been following all of the ISIS attacks this month really closely.

No, her name was Lamia Chikani. I read about Nohemi today, so tragic I was going to bring it up on the board as well but I figured that maybe the women here wanted to keep the posts baby related. I cried when I heard the news; I had several friends very close to the theater that day and they were luckily all safe. The Russian plane, the funeral bombing in Baghdad, the suicide bombings at a mosque in Beirut, and now France is retaliating. It's very scary

I see where people want to pray for peace, and I get that. However, France needs more than prayers. I pray that our administration has the huevos to take a stand with France and root out the problem; so many Americans seem to have already forgotten 9/11 and they don't understand why we've gotten involved with the war on terror. While I don't agree with every decision made leading into the US's entrance to Iraq, I feel that continually downsizing the US's military is a terrible, terrible choice. The rules of engagement are a joke, and we will continue to lose young men to extremist sympathizers until something is done to take the rules of war out of the hands of politicians who have never worn a k-pod, much less tried to fall asleep whilst listening to gunfire and missile strikes.
I also hope that the matter can be approached in such a way as to minimize the idea that all Muslims are bad. The vast majority of Muslims and Middle Eastern people are just people, like us; I cannot imagine the hate they are subjected to every single day. If these attacks were begun by Islamic extremists, I hope the French people can better differentiate between bad men and good men who all happen to dress similarly and have the same God.
If there must be trouble, let it be in my day, that my child may know peace. - Thomas Payne.
@AmadorRose my news feed on FB has been so full of hatred for Muslims it breaks my heart. I'm not in a good frame of mind due to packing today to respond very well, but I absolutely loved everything you've said in your post. It's sad and I hope we aren't going into another series of wars as we're all having children.
@Knottie9983816 DH went to Iraq twice, and his two fondest memories are of a shephard cooking goat for them (and his LT freaking out that H would eat "haji" goat - he said it was delicious and would love to find a place that made it) and the Iraqi kids asking for candy. His mom used to send him boxes full of Mexican candies, which he would share; the kids didn't like the chili powder in most of it so they'd have one taste, spit it into their hands, and throw it back at him. They liked soccer balls better. More for him, he says
The vast majority of Americans who have interacted with Middle Eastern people are able to easily make the distinction that there are good and bad - especially since we worked so hard to prepare their military to take over when we left. It's just very sad to me that other Americans cannot make this distinction - just like Japanese Americans in WWII. Spewing hatred and violence against Americans of Middle Eatern descent who happen to practice Islam is asinine and disgusting. Why can't we use that energy for something positive and useful? Why can't these "patriots" use all of that energy - because hate takes a LOT of energy - and funnel it into helping vets make the transition after they get back? To feed the homeless vets? To start community outreach programs for vets to turn to when the PTSD becomes too much and all they can think of is suicide? THAT would be patriotism; spreading fear and hate about something they know nothing about is cowardly and despicable.
Also, to my knowledge there is not yet any proof that the attacks have any sort of Islamic connection. I mean yes, that's an easy conclusion to draw, but can we not count the chickens before the eggs hatch?
@AmadorRose Islamic State did take the responsibility for the attacks as far as I know, so sadly yes the connection is there. But these people attack Muslims as well: two suicide bombers at a mosque in Beirut during prayer and a bomb at a funeral in Iraq, like what is the freakin point!? I will not go into a discussion here about US military involvement but that does not mean I do not respect what the troops go through and sacrifice in order to create peace. And I really appreciate what you said about not making the regular Muslims the picture of evil. I'm raised Muslim and it saddens me to see my sisters worried about their safety. People here have been quite horrible on social media, even some of my own Danish friends, against Muslims and refugees. They forget the terror of ISIS is what those refugees are running away from. It's quite sad.
@elasticheart13 that's how I feel about Hispanic immigrants here in the US. Maybe that'll be my UO
And I don't disagree that the US's involvement should have been much different; both our politicians and our troops should have conducted themselves differently. It seems the only thing that matters here is the popularity ratings going into the next election, which is pretty disturbing.
Not! A good time to continue downsizing the U.S. Military. It is too bad the French would not get onboard with us when we went to the Middle East following the 9/11 attacks but I do believe we need to be bigger than that and join forces to finish the war on terror. So many innocent lives are lost daily due to terrorism, I would hate to see it only get worse in our children's generation.
Side note: the French(government) at least made a strategic move with the bombing on Raqqa. They were going after Isis leaders, not the general Syrian public. And so glad to see Turkey tightening its borders!

Giving birth is amazing. Seriously I felt the same way, but it was the best thing I've ever done. Loved it so much that I was actually jealous when my still-pregnant friends went into labor. Also, my son was a week late, and by the time he was coming, I really wasn't scared anymore.. just ready to have him out!!!
Second the epidural. Embrace it!

Maybe this is her way of pranking us; making us really excited about giving birth, and the BAM! RING OF FIRE!!
And thank you everyone. It's been hard on DH. ISIS just issued a warning to all countries who participate in attacking them that they would be next and sending a direct threat to Washington and it makes me really worried.
On happier notes, I had my anatomy scan a few hours ago. My weird dream did not come true; LO is still a boy and my worries vanished as he was super healthy and just as weird as his mother. This is my third ultrasound and he has not been positioned in a normal way in any of them! :P last time he was "standing up" in my uterus and this time he was on his belly which made the midwife laugh. 30 min and a few somersaults later he finally turned around and started "waving". She said the ultra sounds often give an idea of their personality and I immediately thought "oh boy, he's a copy of me".
Everything appeared perfect and my bump popped today! Can't wait for HDBD so I'll show you anyway :P
@elasticheart13 You & your precious bump look wonderful! And HOW CUTE, I've never heard of a baby standing up or lying on their belly in an ultrasound! Love it!

Thank you! haha him standing up last time was due to my retroverted uterus I was told it looked so funny he likes sleeping on his belly I believe, just like me. :P
@elasticheart13 I swear they have personality in there!! At our elective US baby girl was showing off and toward the end she turned her back and was just 'I'm done now.. .you can go'... it was hilarious, but I can tell we are in for some sass!

Hahaha, that is so cute! I promised DH to take him to an elective ultrasound scan when he comes here so he can see for himself what is waiting for us :P
@elasticheart13 yay for a healthy baby! How much longer until your hubby can join you?
He applied for the visa last Wednesday and we were told it would take less than 14 days if all the paperwork is right. So hopefully before the end of November, SO excited

Oh this is so exciting!!!! Yay for having your husband for the holidays!
I just had my OB appointment and heard IPS results. My screening gave me a 1:62,000 chance for Down's, and no risk for spina bifida or other neural tube defects. So happy and relieved! 20 week anatomy ultrasound in 2 days!
We just had our anatomy ultrasound last week and it all went perfectly despite the rainy cold weather. Baby has some great looking bones, well at least I think so. Baby was sitting, mostly in what looked like a fire log pose, back turned and happily living on my left side. Thankfully legs were positioned perfectly and within the first three shots we found out baby is not only human but a
I'm in a vaccine discussion on a local mom board. Not debate because keeping it civil on all sides. It's a mostly natural mom group with a a lot of anti vaxxers and the OP said that at first they were gonna do modified schedule and she was okay with no vaccines, but husband sister is a nurse and convinced him, does anybody have any non biased research. Of course idiots are posting the most biased anti vax bullshit I've ever seen, but I know my "job" isn't to convince them. Just the lady on the fence. So I've been super civil and giving her a lot of science based information. A lot of women also cited dr Sears book as non biased and I gave some links and information on why it is fear mongering and misleading. I gave the example with aluminum in vaccines, the purpose it serves (it's an adjuvant so it actually reduces the doses of the vaccine you need), and the fda's stance on how much aluminum is safe based on the agency for toxic substances and disease registry. Then an idiot lady wrote "not sure I trust the agencies listed, and honestly I don't feel there is a "safe" amount of aluminum to be ingested". Like are you fucking kidding me? I just can't argue with dumb. Let's ignore the highest authority on this issue and just say out of our asses that no amount is safe, when we know it is. I just can't with these people.

Sometimes I read stuff like this, and the (very) evil side of me just thinks: "Ok, ignorant person, just go on with your plan. Darwin's Natural Selection must go on".
Then, the normal me takes over again and realizes just how bad evil me was for thinking something like that (LOL), and I always end up engaging in long heated discussions to try to show them the light. Promote health, always! I am glad so many of you are on the same boat, cause I am tired of these discussions.
The thing I've learned is that you're not going to change the minds of the die hard anti vaxxers. They will literally fight your empirical, peer reviewed information with a blog by a nurse who lost her license. But there are people on the fence who have legit fears (except not actually legit lol), and giving them the information and explaining to them what to look for (how to look for legit sources etc), CAN help them change their minds and bring them to the light.
I don't actually wish harm upon anybody's child, but sometimes I just almost almost almost wish bad shit would happen to these peoples children's so they would realize the dangerous decisions they've made are wrong and stop this madness.

Absolutely, I never ever wish harm on any child. They have nothing to do with their parent's bad decisions, and just have the right to grow healthy. But bad stuff does happen, there are countless testimonials of such parents who didn't vaccinate and regretted it because the child ended up catching the disease, and some died from it. It just doesn't get as much attention. I clearly remember the case of a woman who chose not to vaccinate her son against flu, and the son got flu, got a myocarditis from it, and had a sudden cardiac arrest. Super sad. Things like flu and whooping cough are the most palpable examples because these diseases are still among us; other diseases like mumps, measles or rubella will take longer to convince people because they are still way less prevalent in this part of the world (THANKS TO VACCINES!). As the anti-vaxxer movement grows and these diseases have a stronger comeback (UGH!!!!), people are going to really start regretting their decisions.
