  • @elasticheart13 I just found a Nutella recipe that you should probably be aware of. I'm deciding between this and a cherry cheesecake dip for a potluck tonight.

So I watched the PBS doc Twice Born last night on Netflix - how freaking awesome is modern medicine?!? Long story short, the doc follows a handful of families as they go through the candidacy process to be recipients of FETAL surgery through eventually going home. Like, partial c-section, fetal surger, close them back in, stay for months near the hospital, re-c/s at first signs of labor, any necessary follow up surgeries for baby depending on the issue. Woah. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it until after your a/s since it's all about worst case scenarios, and there is both loss and discussion of fetal demise involved, but really really cool advances in medicine happening.
This reminds me of the video the midwife asked me to watch before the a/s which was all about worst case scenarios and couples who chose to terminate the pregnancy and whatnot. I did not need to watch that.

Lol yeah, the video was called Fetal Diagnostics and was about anatomy scans and what they check for and which possible outcomes it could have. The doctor speaking in the video kept including statistics and how they in some cases only can detect 50% of problems with a scan and that an anatomy scan is no guarantee and bla bla bla. And in the last 30 sec they're like "but don't worry, this only affects 2% of all pregnancies". Wow, thanks for the comforting words.

Update: this may be dangerous. I made extra, just in case it all gets eaten.

If you could send me some, that would be great (I could really use the heart-eye emoji)

Can I have some pls? FedEx overnight shipping!
  • I would consider sharing, but I may have to m eat all of it...in one sitting.
  • I want that but strawberry not cherry. I hate cherry. Is that an uo?

My parents came over to discuss a bunch of stuff and my mom told I don't even look pregant and then asked (legit concerned) if everything was okay. I'm not upset or bothered by it but I just know in 10-15 weeks I'm gonna get the nasty comments I got last time. And I'm not a sensitive person and I always think people are exaggerating when they say people say rude comments. But it happened. Grrrrrr.

I don't like baked/cooked fruit which is a super UO! I would scrape that off and eat the other stuff... My future FIL kept saying how big I'm getting when I saw him last week... That was fun...
  • Also in her defense I think I'm "showing" less than last time at this stage, because I started out this pregnancy 5-7 pounds heavier. I haven't gained any weight this time because I never lost that 5 lb. so even though I wasn't showing last time at this stage, you could tell I had gained a little weight (well she could since she sees me all the time, I doubt others could tell). I don't think I have a bump or blump in either of these (first pic is DS pregnancy, the one marked is now, same week).

Also, I'm really sorry about your mom. My family is going to be the same when I go home for Christmas, and I'm so very glad that we don't live close. You are a better person than I am if you don't snap at other people's rude comments. I figure not their baby, not their business.

Ultimately, it's really inspiring and hopeful overall that there are so many babies alive and relatively well today that would have had a 100% mortality rate 10-20 years ago. But I know there are people here who have experienced loss or who would worry themselves sick until their a/s so I wanted to be sure people knew it's not for everyone.

I've met a few of my ds's bumpies. One lives in town and we get lunch occasionally. Another came to visit us on a vacation, they felt like getting away and hasn't been to Vegas. But we basically went into one Casino and they just hung out with us (the hubby and wife and daughter). Another two I've met while they were in town for fun (drove down to meet them). And when we were in Atlanta we met up with one who lent is a PNP and toys for DS. It's been quite amazing! I had no idea these kinds of friendships came from this site.

I think it's a concern for many mothers that they won't be able to produce milk enough for the baby which is a valid concern. I read somewhere that you can stimulate the milk production prior to giving birth by using the electric breast pump which I'm planning on getting.

And we were like... At this resort, I guess? We were in this HUGE room with clean, dark wood and floor to ceiling windows showing lots of trees and sunlight, and all the kids were like, toddler age... It was totally awesome and quite possibly my new vacation home goals. XD

I'm getting that vibe too. I talked to my mom about it the other day and started telling her statistics about women who can't produce, latch failure issues, etc, and she was just dismissive of it. She basically said if you go into anything expecting failure, you'll live up to the hype you've set up for yourself. She bottle fed me and my next sister, but with the next four she didn't let anyone tell her how hard it would be and it was a success, even with her pediatrician telling her to bottle feed because they all we jaundiced very badly. (Apparently feeding every two hours works just as well than formula, for anyone curious)

  • Lately I've been having this random fear of not being able to produce milk when the time comes :disappointed:

    Me too @kalanieileen.

With my first two, I didn't even consider BFing. For one thing I was not all that "mature" about *anybody* seeing me even attempt to perform the beautiful, natural process. (In retrospect, my ex was emotionally abusive, so that may have had a lot to do with my feelings of inadequacy/body shame/performance anxiety.) And another major hurdle to breastfeeding in my case is that I've had galactorrhea pretty much since puberty (unusual breast discharge).

This time around, I started wondering early on if perhaps I'm finally ready give BFing a try... I really want to enjoy this pregnancy, birth and baby as fully as possible, since it will undoubtedly be my last! :) So I brought it up with my dr at my first appointment when she asked if I had any questions. She was reassuring about my chances to BF successfully, even with my history of galactorrhea, and she pointed out that lactaction specialists would be available to help. I guess she sensed I was already kind of stressed about the thought of trying and failing though, because she also said that it was perfectly fine if I decided to stick with formula again.

I'm just not sure my body is capable of producing anything other than the yucky gunk of galactorrhea (sorry if that's TMI), and even though my husband now is WONDERFUL, deep down I'm still afraid that he will think less of me if I can't breastfeed. Ahhh, baggage...
  • @kalanieileen MOST women are able to produce enough if they have the right support system and are able to establish breastfeeding early enough. A lot of times women won't respond well to a pump when they go back to work which is why a lot of people recommend pumping early on to start a supply and regulate being used to a pump. But then a lot of very natural sources say not to pump at all because it will produce oversupply. My thought is moderation of all approaches. Yes there are rare cases when women simply cannot produce enough, but if baby is healthy and mom feeds baby regularly the first few weeks, then good supply should be established. And if worse comes to worse, you'll formula feed, which is a great way to feed a baby! Formula IS good for babies. Maybe it's not "as" good as breastmilk, but have you ever heard of a child not thriving because they were properly fed, just with formula? No. If it weren't good for babies they wouldn't grow and thrive from formula, and it wouldn't be fda approved as the only other appropriate way to feed infants after mothers milk (despite what some people say about goat milk, it is not sufficient to replace formula or human milk).

Your mom is right (don't you hate it when that happens haha). Can breastfeeding be a challenge? Absolutely. But if you go into thinking it is going to be a herculean task, then there is a good chance that it will feel that way. Breastfeeding is a skill and just like any skill, it takes preparation and practice. I went through a learning curve with breastfeeding due to some anatomical difficulties (flat nipples and recent lumpectomy that took out half of 1 boob), but we practiced and I got help from a Lactation Consultant. It was important to me and I breastfeed/pumped as long as we could.
