Infant deaths from respiratory depression occurred in studies. I know this because obviously during my pregnancy I took it as well......
Yeah, I thought so. Luckily I was able to sleep it off with the use of a hot shower followed by a 10 minute neck and shoulder massage by DH, and some regular Tylenol. I got lucky considering how much it had been bothering me all day.
@Sjeff0816 that sucks about having to take the medicine then pump and going thru all that just to have it not even work. What a for real drag. At least now you know, tho. I also consider giving up bfing when I have a headache, especially since I have to give formula anyway... But for some reason I keep on keeping on. I hope you find something that works for you, too!,
@amccoy129 thanks gal. Its not a pleasant thing to deal with, a baby and a headache, but it could be worse, with a 3 year old running around and having to chase them and all that. At least I have a pretty chill baby.

Wait, what?! I had a huge migraine after delivery and I usually take Imitrex but they said they couldn't dispense that to me because I was BFing...so they gave me Fioricet! I had to alternate that with Percocet. I'm glad everything turned out ok but damn, maybe they should've checked the pharm desk reference a little closer.

There are at least two, maybe three types of Fioricet. Some have codeine, some don't, I don't know if they all have butalbital or not, but mine (before pregnancy) did. I think @klkonwi is specifically referring to the type with butalbital in it, since that's what I was wondering about. I could be wrong, if I am she'll let us know. Anyway, its possible they gave you one with acetaminophen, caffeine, and codeine (no butalbital). If so, that's just a hopped up Tylenol 3, am I right? And Tylenol 3s should be OK for nursing as long as the directions are followed. I know I wasn't the only one rx'd them PP. And my current stash I got from my Dr for my muscle spasms in my ribs, and she knew I was nursing at the time she rx'd them.
@klkonwi Well now I'm kinda upset. They just gave it to me the first 2 days I was there, but we were definitely trying to nurse. I manage all of our patient experience data & CAHPS surveys for our hospital system and rule #1 is try not to kill the patient.
^^ I've wondered this myself. Sometimes I feel like I can feel them poking me a little bit, so now I worry about what's going to happen to DH once we're back in action
Codeine is metabolized into morphine so it can be dangerous while nursing. Depends on the exact prescription they gave you. Kinda hard tell on the internet

Yes I heard a horrible case study about a baby that died of an overdose from mom taking codeine. So sad.
LO was awakened after only 40 minutes during his mid-day nap, which is usually about an hour and a half. His afternoon nap, which is usually 30-40 minutes is almost 2.5 hours and still going! It's 6:30 pm, and we want to go to dinner (though that doesn't really matter). Bedtime is usually between 6:30 and 7:30.
Should I wake him, or just let him sleep?
Wondering what's best for him, not for me. He's 20 weeks. TIA

My rule is let a sleeping baby lie! I don't wake mine.

Balls. I always wish I knew in advance this would happen so I could nap, too.
I also follow the let sleeping babies lie protocol, when I can, anyway, but I have also had to wake my LO to go and do stuff.
But since you struggle with your LO sleeping for extended periods, I might be more inclined to let him sleep
^^ that's so weird. Then why would they prescribe Tylenol with codeine PP? Bah... Makes no sense. I give up.
Ya they will prescribe narcotics after delivery but never really push that they should be taken as sparingly and for the short of amount of time as possible. I will say if a baby died of an overdose of codeine through breastmilk, home girl was not taking the prescribed amount.. It is safe in small doses. Some Drs argue that its completely fine longer term as well. Eta missing words
@virginiaunicorn11 you probably decided by now but since he always goes to bed between 6:30-7 I would have woken him up so your night isn't messed up.
Yes, I am worried about this. I let him sleep because nights are a mess anyway! He woke at 7:30, so 3.5 hour nap. Oof. Thanks for the quick responses, ladies!
@HayesRN13 codeine is metabolized info morphine and there was something abnormal in the way was mom was metabolizing it giving high amounts to the baby. It was actually a normal dose. It's been a while when I listened to the CE lecture on meds and breastfeeding but it was alarming. this is a rare occurrence, but still.
Okay so when I went to the ER for kidney stones, they gave me straight morphine. They said I was okay to continue nursing. Luckily, I followed my instincts and pumped and dumped to be on the safe side. I also took a Percocet (but again pumped and dumped). The ER Doctor made sure to double check everything...

You are fine, like they said that is super rare, and she had to be taking it for a longer amount of time? Correct me if I'm wrong didn't hear that story

Yeah it wasn't a one dose thing. My nurses pretty much insisted on me taking a Percocet after delivery with my Advil. I do not do pain meds but went ahead and took it and still nursed. I just did Advil for the rest of the time. I felt like I'd been hit by a truck my back hurt so bad after pushing. Random but next baby I will not be talked into pushing flat with my husband helping hold my back up. I could kick myself for going along with it.
My brain doesn't work anymore. I don't want to mess this up. This DLST means that if LO goes to bed at 8 and wakes up at 7, it will now be down and 7 and up at 6 (yikes). So I need to start moving bed time back 10 minutes to make it 9. Correct?
I think so! I'm trying to do the same math. LO wakes up at 7, and I can't have her wake up at 6 or I can't get ready for work. So I guess we'll try to push her 730 bedtime to 8 and then 830 throughout the week?
We're trying to move the kids' bedtimes over this week. With DS, every time change has been brutal. Every. Single. One. I'm not looking forward to this weekend.
2 questions- first off I'm worried because LOs sleep seems to be so different than everyone else's (I know all babies are different) but little man goes to bed around 8:30 sleeps until 7ish. Then he takes a nap from 10-10:30 till 2. My question is, is it better for him to take two shorter naps as opposed to one long one? Sometimes he takes a little cat nap around 4:30 but that's not consistent. I remember my DD took a morning and an afternoon nap for a long time before she gave up the morning nap and now just takes an afternoon nap but I don't remember at what age the two nap schedule was set up and I'm not sure if I should try to set that up for little man.
My second question is-my LO is super spitty (no teeth yet) but his hands are always in his mouth and his spit gets all over his chin. His chin is now all red because there's always spit on it or I'm always wiping spit off of it, like its chapped but the skin is smooth. It doesn't seem to be bothering him but I'm worried about the skin getting irritated in the future as it gets colder. does anyone have any ideas for treating the red skin? Or am I just over reacting because there seems to be nothing else wrong except for the red color?

Two naps I believe are better, babies this age shouldn't be up for more than 2.5-3.5hours at most (really it's like 2-3), however every baby is different, I think as long as you stick with letting baby sleep when tired, not waking a sleeping baby, and not letting your baby get too overtired (trying to keep baby awake) is all you can do. He will regulate a schedule that's good for him and what he needs if you allow it. As far as the drool, there are so many organic creams you can put on, I use plain Vaseline on his chin (he just got two teeth and has been literally soaked faced down last month) .. The big thing is NOT wiping it, that will exacerbate it.. And that's what causes it (baby rubbing his face against sheets or whatever).. Keep a barrier and pat dry conservatively
^what @HayesRN13 said. 2 naps are better. Mine takes 3, but they are short. Around an hour. If your LO seems happy the rest of the day, then I think it's fine. That last stretch from 2-8 would worry me, but you know your baby best.
Yea a 4 hour nap is a too long I think but if it's working for your lo maybe it's fine. I would wake lo up after 2/3 hours that way you could get another nap in around 3/4:00
My baby is big sleeper too, but does do one morning nap and one afternoon one (sometimes 2 short ones in the afternoon instead on the weekends). I think they are usually around 1-2 hours long.
Re redness, we have the same issue, slobber, teething and hands in the mouth. We use Aquaphor on her cheeks but Vaseline should be good too!
Are ya'll washing your LOs gums? I have never heard of doing this and at his 4 month appointment the other day, the nurse asked if I was. She looked at me like I was terrible when I said no. I have only remembered to do it once since Friday. Oops

Also does EBF mean breastmilk from boob or bottle or only boob......
I take EBF to mean boob only/mostly. EP is only pumping.
Maybe RIGHT after delivery they assumed it would take a few days for your milk to come in......?
