Teething is one of those things where the horror stories take over the conversation, like shots, daylight savings, etc. Some babies have an awful time but for many or even most it's just a moderately sucky thing that they deal with pretty quickly.
H's eyes are blue grey since birth. Some days darker, almost the color of storm clouds. DH has green eyes and mine are blue green. We both have dark hair, but somehow, we have a blonde haired/blue eyed baby.
Someone once told me that two Browns can make a blue, but that two blues will always be blue.
The simplistic version of this is that 2 brown eyed people have a 25% chance of having a blue eyed baby.
2 blue eyed people have a 100% chance of having a blue eyed baby.
It's because brown eyes are a dominant gene and blue eyes are a recessive gene. If you inherit a dominant gene (brown) it will take over (dominate) the recessive gene (and your eyes will be brown). Brown eyed people can carry the recessive blue eyed gene and not know it, and both parent can pass that on to the baby, which would then have blue eyes.
It's a little more complicated than that, but that's the basic explanation.
We still have dark blue eyes here. I have hazel and DH has brown. I keep thinking LO's will change, but my mom had blue eyes and so does my mother in law. Currently, his are actually the exact same color as hers.
@virginiaunicorn11 a good friend didn't even know when her son was getting teeth. She said one day it wasn't noticeable and the next he had one. I would do anything unless needed. I pray that's how it is for us!
@virginiaunicorn11 that's awesome that he wasn't upset, I don't think I'd give tylenol if he seems ok. I don't like giving lo tylenol because it constipates him. I keep thinking he's teething because he drools so bad, but I haven't felt anything yet. Wondering if they'll just randomly appear?
@virginiaunicorn11 I agree with pp. If LO seems OK, no need for Tylenol. DS ran a low fever when he got his first 2 teeth so we gave him Tylenol. After that, we usually didn't realize he was teething until after they broke the surface.
PS I hope he's not a biter! I'm really hoping to avoid that this time around.
@virginiaunicorn11 I haven't seen any teeth yet but I think when I do I will probably not be giving Tylenol unless its obviously pretty uncomfortable for him. I seem to remember someone on here talking about using something like oragel, tho
@virginiaunicorn11 Make sure if you get orajel to not get the kind with benzocaine bc it can potentially numb their throat which makes it hard to swallow...at least that's what I was told. There is a more homeopathic orajel that is safer for younger babies. Or at least ask the doctor first before using orajel with benzocaine, he or she may say it's fine.
@mellymar my LO's eyes started out dark blue, then went to gray blue, and are now a dark green/gray blue. My husband has blue/green eyes and I have brown/green eyes, so it's anyone's guess what she'll end up with haha. I'm hoping she ends up with green eyes, they run in my family so it's possible!
Ours are still blue/gray. DH has bright blue eyes and mine are blue/green/no distinct color. All of our family has blue eyes, so there's that. I hope they turn bright blue like d/h or ice blue like my dad and brother.
Thanks, ladies! I guess I've only heard the horror stories, and I'm from a big "suck it up" family, so I just wanted to make sure I wasn't inadvertently leaving baby in pain. He doesn't seem bothered, so I'll just shut up and be grateful.
Thanks again for your responses! It's sad (or not), but I get way better advice here than from our current pediatrician...
@virginiaunicorn11 our LO was only fussy sometimes when she started teething a few weeks ago. We are wary of giving Tylenol because of effects on the liver so we have only given it to her at night, and only when she was so fussy nothing else (food, diaper, etc) seemed to be the cause. Not that I want her to be in pain, but teething lasts a long time and we don't want to become reliant. But yes, I've had the same debate in my head about as you are!
Breastfeeding and pumping make me sleepy due to that relaxing hormone....but I'm in school and I wish I could get it together to study or rather, read research articles for school while breastfeeding and pumping. It just seems to turn my brain to mush and I wind up wasting time on Facebook or Reddit. How to maintain a disciplined frame of mind while milk is coming out of me? I spend so much time breastfeeding, pumping or lying with my sleeping baby on my breast, and to get my stuff done for school I need to not waste that time.
@cait7425 eye color isn't that simple since there are shades. The bright green is recessive off of blue, so 2 blue eyed people can have a green eyed baby. But the darker green that is close to brown is from the brown eyed side. My brother has green and my parents have blue. My eyes are blue green and husbands is the green from the brown side. Lo has bright blue from my family.
Can someone tell me what the odds are of two right handed people having 2 left handed kids? DH joked he'd leave me if we had 2 leftys. I've noticed LO seems to favor her left too...
Am I naïve to think that the end of daylight savings time fixed our bedtime problem? We haven't been able to get LO to sleep before 8:30 or 8:45, but tonight he was down at 7:30. I'm sure mornings will be a little tougher now, but it feels like a win.
@sammy K not sure I think it can be hereditary. Is anyone in your family left handed? My grandfather was and each sequential generation each family had one child.
I think LOs head is in the process of growing again. I know in the events leap it mentioned he may need to have his supported more often again, so that would make sense, but he's got these 'lumps' (for lack of a better word) on each side of his head, like above the corners of his forehead. At first I only saw it on one side and thought he somehow bumped it and had a goose egg come up. But then I saw the other side had one too, and you can feel they are along the ridge line where the front skull plate is.
So, the back of his head should catch up at some point and he'll have a round head again, right? I wont be able to feel the difference between the two? Now that I've noticed it and seen it, I can't UNsee it, and its kinda freaking me out.

LO has a bump/lump on the back of his head on one side. His pedi determined that it seems to be part of his oddly shaped noggin. It was definitely hard to stop staring at/feeling (almost obsessing over) it. It seems to be getting less noticeable over time. He also had a pretty flat spot on the opposite side, that's rounding out now, especially since he started sleeping on his belly.
Hi ladies, just wondering how far out post partum can PND spring on? What's the difference between depression & PND? Any ladies that have this how quickly after you started treatment did you feel normal again?
@mishmardhiono I'm not sure about the difference between regular depression and the post baby kind, as they both suck ass. And I don't know the 'official' answer for when its not post baby depression anymore. But I believe personally that post baby depression can happen really anytime after baby is born. I'm sure the whack ass hormones have something to do with it, which I've read somewhere that the body doesn't adjust itself back to normal until about a year after the baby is born. But its a huge life adjustment, and any huge adjustment like that can trigger a depression. I assume you're asking for yourself, I'm sorry you're feeling down. Its a pretty bad place to be. You've had a lot of struggles lately with your DH and home situation as well, that certainly doesn't help. I ended up being prescribed meds and counseling for my depression. I kept forgetting to take the meds consistently but went without fail to my counseling sessions for a month, and brought DH to one of them. My counselor was very helpful in making me think about things in a different way, which in turn helped me to have a better outlook in general. Its not all sunshine and glitter farts over here now, but its much better than it was. Don't be afraid to have the discussion with your Dr about how you are feeling. You owe it to yourself and your LO to be the person you normally are, not the depressed version of yourself.
Thanks, sure am. I'm so miserable and am probably mostly to blame with our issues atm. Thanks for the advice & encouragement. Going to see the dr today
@mishmardhiono, we're at risk for developing postpartum depression for the first year after delivery, and once developed, it can continue further (according to the classes I took at the hospital). Not sure what is the difference between that and non-postpartum depression though.
I'm glad you're going to talk to someone. Depression is complicated and terrible. I hope you're able to start feeling better very soon.
I see lots of ladies here having success with it. The product info says use it for crib transition at 3 months, and stop using it by 9 months.
Questions: 1) LO is wearing 9 month size in Carter's and Gap. Does the Merlin size run the same? (If so, I'm afraid the 6-9 month suit, which is the biggest, won't fit much longer.)
2) Anyone not had luck with this? $40 is a lot...
3) Would starting it at 5 months be ok, or too late?
4) LO is a side sleeper. The product info said it's for back sleeping. Would side sleeping be possible?

I don't think side sleeping would be possible. It's too bulky. My LO is 4 months and in 6 month clothes and the 3-6 month was hard to put on. I quit using it after like a week since it did nothing. I need to just sell it on Facebook.

1. LO is in Carter's 6 mo clothes and the 3-6 mo Merlin suit is huge on him. He can pull his legs up into it. And his arms don't protrude from the sleeves. They run BIG.
2. We've had moderate luck going from SwaddleMe to Merlin, first few nights were fine, now he wakes up 2x or more but I attribute that to the sleep regression and not the suit. $40 is a lot but I figured if it really is magic then it would be totally worth it and the only way to know is try. Verdict still out.
3. We just turned 4 mo and started it last week, don't think 5 mo would be too late. LO wouldn't have fit in it any earlier than just recently.
4. LO seems to side-nurse just fine in it but he doesn't side sleep so don't know about staying in that position for a lengthy period of time.
We went from basinette to Pack n Play (big mattress) last week which is why we tried the suit. I'm running a test tonight, going to put him back in a SwaddleMe just to be certain the waking up is sleep regression and not the suit.

1) my LO is still in some 0-3m clothes, and some 3-6m clothes. The 3-6m merlin IS big on him, his feet don't even come out the bottom, and usually if one hand is out the other hand isn't. His torso has room in spades. That said, it DID shrink in the dryer. Tho I shrunk it on purpose, a little
2) I dunno if anyone hasn't had luck, but we know my LO has been a good sleeper when swaddled arms in, until I went to the merlin and continued to be a good sleeper with the merlin. However, the one night I tried without it was not great. He did wake multiple times, some of them he put himself back to sleep, and some of them I had to go in there and replace a paci and shush. So, I did notice a worsening when not using it. Could have been coincidence, sure. But I didn't want to try again to find out.
3) I don't it matters when you start it
4) most importantly to you, I do NOT think your LO will be able to sleep on his side at all. Its REALLY puffy. My guy can't even bring his legs up far to kick. His arms stick out at his sides. The suit is specifically designed with the arms sticking out. He IS able to move, but the puffiness of the suit prevents him from having full range and speed of motion.
The makers of the sleepsuit also say to not use it once your LO begins to roll. You've already accomplished rolling with your LO if he is on his side, so your already last the point the manufacturer recommends you stop.
If I were you, I would not pay full $ for one. I'm happy I did, but I think you're past the point of using one. However, if you saw one secondhand somewhere for $5 or whatever, you could try it.

I was going to say the opposite, that they run a little small... then read that you have only had it a week. It seems like maybe it has shrunk up quite a bit. (Have been using it a month and a half, so thought lo was just getting bigger) While LO doesn't sleep that great - at his best he's up 2x/night - no way do i want to find out if he sleeps worse without it. It worked great as a bassinet/swaddle transition - there was no change/disruption to his routine when we made that change. Crossing my fingers it fits for another 3 weeks when we move to the crib.
Agree that 2nd hand could be the best way for you to try it.

@virginiaunicorn11 Save your money, your LO like mine is too big for it and flips from side/front/back throughout the night..likes his side if not on tummy so yes I have to go in there and tuck his blanket tightly around him while he's on his side, because he likes the snug feeling... Your LO is side sleeper and they are really for younger/smaller kids ..
