Re: FFAQ - Flame Free Anytime Questions

  • LO has no particular favorite sleeping position - she pretty evenly rotates between back, side and belly. The problem is that if sometimes I can tell she's trying to get on her belly, she'll get frustrated if it's too hard for her to flip at that moment or if it puts her up against the crib side - these things wake her up so then she's just mad. But other times she'll be happily on her belly with no drama. So, my question is that I have tried on occasion to put her down on her belly if she's already trying to head in that direction but she always immediately pushes up like its tummy time. Is there a method you mommies of belly sleepers use to lay your LOs down or do yours always have them start in another position and roll themselves? @HayesRN13
  • ^^^ I used to put LO down on his back up until about 1-2 weeks ago. About 3-4 weeks ago, he started to flip himself onto his belly almost immediately after being put down. Sometimes, this would mean he's getting limbs stuck between the crib slats or bonking himself up against the crib bc I couldn't predict which way he would roll. Other times, all that jostling to flip over made him spit up. So now I just lay him on his belly from the get go. Once he finds his thumb, he is good to go. It did take a little getting used to for him, like hey, how did I get on my belly?!?!

  • I was wondering that too, @swaugh14. LO is usually swaddled but today I was trying to put her down at someone else's house and didn't have her blanket. I tried putting her on her tummy but her head popped right up.
  • @swaugh14 I put Lo down on her back and she flips over if she wants to. If I put her down exhausted and already asleep she'll stay on her back for almost an hour or so before rolling over. If she's still awake she rolls right to her belly, finds her thumb and is out within 3-5 minutes.
  • @swaugh14 I don't notice it until he's in just his diaper puffing his, tummy out, I tried a q tip with lotion but DH kept telling me I was going to hurt him and made me paranoid.
  • Regarding loveys, LO loves to pull blankets up by his face. I wish I could let him have one. But he also loves to then put them in his mouth with his hand. And he hasn't yet learned to pull blankets away. So its going to he awhile yet.

My LO loves when we read to him. He starts jabbering away.

Our lactation consultant said that while common for babies to only poop a few times a week it technically is better if they go daily. We started him on probiotic and he goes almost every day now, every other day at the longest

I really want to try a probiotic for our LO to see if it would help her reflux..I just can't help but wonder if that's the problem bc I had to be on antibiotics during labor and I wonder if that caused her to not be able to develop healthy bacteria in her gut from the beginning..or just in general if that's not it, I just wonder if it would help. I asked the nurse at her dr office last time and she looked at me like I was crazy and said they didn't do that there, so I didn't ask the doctor. But when she goes back next time I'll ask about them. I think it's weird they wouldn't try them..is there a risk involved? I guess I should read up on it more, but I've read where it has helped a lot of reflux and colic babies.. @janit368 - What brand did you get? Or was it a Rx? Of course I'll discuss with the Dr. too.
  • is there a 14 week growth spurt? these past couple days this kid is driving me mental. wouldnt nap for more than 7 minutes, would cry instantly when i put him down and waking up like 5 times to eat instead of his usual 2.

    Yep :).

We use Gerber Soothe drops per our doc. LO has reflux too. They are over the counter. Cheapest on Amazon!
  • @ashleymc09 We use Klaire Labs Therbiotic infant formula. A lot of health food stores carry it. If you get it online make sure they ship cold. It's the one of choice with the crunchy moms around here so the pediatrician we all use sells it in his office now which is super handy.

How do ya'll clean out your lo's belly buttons? LO has a pretty shallow innie, but it's always full of fuzz and I don't know how to clean it out without hurting him.

  • How high do you fill the infant tub? Apparently I didn't tell my mom how high to fill it (I didn't know I needed to) and she filled it "up to his ears". I was like um ok, he's not swimming and let's keep it below the ears. Preferably below his nipple line.

A few nights ago I noticed a line on the inside of the tub, which I assume is the indicator for how high the waters allowed the be. I just follow that. It comes to about her belly button.

My FFAQ: at what point am I supposed to stop burping my baby?
  • @messymolly08 I would assume when they stop acting like they need to burp or stop spitting up. My LO needs to be burped after every nursing, two or three times during a bottle feed, and every time after she's been lying on her back for a while. She contracts and squirms if she's got a gas bubble. She's a little over 16 weeks.
  • @mvargas12 you can do a teaspoon of prune juice in milk or formula but not water.......

@mishmardhiono I am an absolute addict...... It's terrible. I never was before baby. It must have something to do with how your metabolism or something changes during pregnancy/breastfeeding

  • I don't do a full oz of prune juice because my guy will totally blow out the diaper...... I've tried. I really don't have to do it often

I believe it's when they are mobile enough to work the gas out on their own. Around the time they can sit up, crawl, etc.
  • Also @swaugh14 I lay my guy down on his tummy after rocking him to sleep.
I just press lightly on his head or back so he thinks I'm still there and he never notices the difference
  • @klkonwi I think I just need to be persistent and keep trying that. It's so obvious she wants to be on her belly sometimes so I hate when she wakes up enough to fight herself on it.
  • What is the etiquette on giving family pictures of your LO and/or family? Professional pics. Who buys?

So far I pay for all of the pics and give them to the family, but it's so expensive and my mom and sister are so greedy about it.
  • Thanks ladies! I do get the disc and the rights, then I upload to shutterfly where I order the extra prints. I guess I'm annoyed that no one ever offers to pay for them. I guess I should start giving them the disc to do it themselves.

Now my mom can't figure shutter fly out so I just order prints for her. She pays for enough stuff so it doesn't bother me.

Why not water? Giving LO a bit of boiled then cooled water was what my pharmacist told me to do over apple or prune juice. I'm just interested in the thoughts, could she be wrong?

Thanks, ladies, all good ideas. I forgot we have a bunny similar to what @dancegurl1118 describes. I will try that!

Just a quick caution based on our experience this morning..that you can take or leave...

I thought LO was ready for a Lovie too I chose what sounds like the same 8x8 blanket but with an owl.

As it turns out that despite that he'll move his sucky out of his month our LO is not able to move the Lovie off of his face.

This morning he put it over his face as I was lying there waiting to determine if he was going to go back to bed or stay up. Thankfully I was awake and heard him making a different noise when it happened.

During playtime I will now test his ability to take it off his face..until he succeeds every time I will not leave it with him unattended. The shape of it (because it gathers in the middle) made a perfect tent covering his face.

  • ^^I've been watching him pretty carefully and my LO seems able to move it off his face. He also only sleeps on his side, and he flops to his back if he needs to. But I'm keeping a close eye on it, and this is a helpful reminder not to let my guard down. Thanks
  • I tried looking for our Mama Symptoms thread but I didn't find it in the first couple pages, and searching for Mama and Symptoms yielded so many results... I just deal today so I'm asking here.

Those of you who suffer from bad headaches (migraines or severe tension headaches) and are breastfeeding, WHAT are you doing / taking for your headaches? Actually, just scratch that to what are you taking for your headaches. Because I know what causes my headaches and try to avoid them, and I know what steps to try and take to stop them from getting worse once I feel one coming on... But once its established residence and is throwing a rager in your brain, what do you take?

I used to take fioricet with butalbital (spelling?) but I can't find any info saying that's OK for bfing. I have been hoarding and using the last of my Tylenol with codeine when I get one, but I only have 3 left and then they're gone. I'll end up using one before bed tonight in hopes it will work. Leaving me two weak doses or one good dose remaining.

I'm afraid if I go to the Dr (I don't have a primary care Dr here, so I end up just seeing whoever) and ask for more of that they will think I'm drug seeking and get all weird about me taking care of my baby (think CPS and social workers and all that). Excedrin migraines used to work, but bf moms can't take aspirin. My hubs says I should just take two and then wait a day before bfing but that will wreck serious havoc with my supply. So I'm hoping that someone knows about something.

(PS, I'm irrationally jazzed I got the chance to use the word 'havoc' just now)

  • @mellymar I'm sorry you are suffering from these migraines! I don't have any advice for you but I'm equally excited or used the word havoc!
  • @mellymar Can you ask at your OB? Especially since you have a mirena* and that can affect them. I asked my nurse at my last mirena appointment and she actually mentioned a local doctor that does Botox injections for them. Anyway, I just take a bunch of Advil since the pain's not really the worst part for me.

*sorry if it's creepy that I know what's inside your cervix.
  • @mellymar I try to avoid meds unless necessary, so I usually take a couple regular Tylenol. I also drink coffee every morning, and that has definitely helped. I know you said you know what helps to prevent them, but I try to make sure my shoulders are down when nursing. Sometimes I rub my shoulders and neck or lay down with a hot cloth on my forehead. Hope you feel better!
  • @mellymar have you called the infant risk hotline? Go to infantrisk.com and call the number. They will help you figure out a solution to your migraines that is safe for breastfeeding!
(Sorry I dirty lurk while putting my little June baby to sleep)

  • Thanks for the suggestions ladies! @jojo1111 @ChardeeMacDennis @cait7425
And thanks for sharing in my word porn, @alcrimmins!

I do plan to ask my OB at my mirena post appt, cause I really like her and she is the closest thing I have to a regular doctor. Its just weird because sometimes some regular Tylenol or Advil helps and sometimes it doesn't, and of course there is no difference between the two headaches and no way to tell if the normal OTC stuff will help or not. The appt with my OB is two weeks away, maybe I can get away with not having any (or at least, not really bad ones) until then.

  • @virginiaunicorn11 and others thinking of a lovey. I do sleep LO with a small blanket, my mother knitted it for DS1 (it took her about 2 years so LO doesn't get his own). Because its knit LO could breathe through it easily. I am sure I am overlooking something and this is really unsafe. I started him with it a few weeks ago. He holds it in his hands and seems to like it. We also use really soft minky fleece sleep sacks and he seems to love to rub those. Just a few other ideas

  • @mellymar fioricet is a giant no for nursing :(

Infant deaths from respiratory depression occurred in studies. I know this because obviously during my pregnancy I took it as well......

  • @mellymar I'm in the same boat. I get terrible migraines weekly. I saw a neuro who put me on Imitrex but I had to pump and dump for 8 hours. The medicine didn't work and then I had to pump on top of it. Since LO was born I've been taking a lot (multiple times a week) of ibuprofen and using warm compresses on my entire face. I wish there was another answer. I also stopped taking prenatals (bad I know) and that seems to have helped a little. If they continue, I may stop BFing so I have more options. Good luck!
  • ^^^I'm so sorry to both of you. DH gets migraines, and I know they are no joke. Can't imagine not having many options on things to take and having to take care of a baby on top of it. I hope you find something you can have @mellymar.
  • @mellymar Excedrin usually helps me, but I don't think it is safe for BFing. I like to lay in the dark with a rice heating pad over my face.
