Nighttime still sucks........

  • Another night of going to bed at 11 and being up from 2 on. All while LO and DH sleep peacefully...

I'm so used to waking up at 6 that today (a non-work day for me), LO slept in until 7:30 am (which is nuts!) and I... Was sitting in bed awake as of 6. Sigh. This is life now?
  • I guess we've finished our crib transition, in that she only sleeps in her crib now. It's still pretty crappy, though, eating 2 times per night and waking and getting a pacifier multiple times. I'm a glutton for punishment so tonight I left one arm unswaddled as well.
  • LO's been sleeping in his crib since day one but now it's freezing in our house so l have been pulling him out when he fusses and bringing him to bed with me. So much for good habits. I think I am just going to go with the flow and deal with the consequences in the future if there are any. It feels harder to change sleep habits than to be up a lot at night. As long as I don't have to rock him or hold him all night I can embrace nighttime. And honestly I don't have a better, warmer place to put the crib. I'll get him a down sack as soon as I can but it he's still cold he'll need to be in bed with me anyway. This mama has been defeated, baby wins. I can definitely see the reasoning behind the sleep training if it works but DS would just escalate with his crying and didn't seem ready for it until after a year old. This LO seems the same. Or it could be that I am not ready for it!

  • @ChardeeMacDennis is your LO rolling yet? Mine started back to stomach now even while swaddled so I'm trying both arms out but her startle reflex is so strong I'm not anticipating good results. She's lying next to me now and already startling half awake repeatedly. I'm pretty comfortable putting her down swaddled. I feel like she's make noise if she rolls & gets stuck and we have a video monitor but I'm still nervous. Tonight is only night two of using her crib. How are all the other crib transitioners doing?!
@henrytviii I figure if LO is sleeping then we all win (assuming I'm sleeping too that is!)
  • That's awesome @virginiaunicorn11 , I'm going to use this exact testament for us, I've been putting off getting a new mom and dad mattress (temperpedic) ours is too soft and kills my back. You just validated me to not wait any longer
  • @ciennah99 No, not really rolling. She's only done it once.

Well, she slept until midnight and I'm feeding her for the first time at 1:00 which is ok for these days. The nights typically get worse from this point on, so we'll see.
  • My LO had a leaky diaper and soaked his Merlin suit. So I went back to a swaddle tonight. He used to wiggle out of them immediately but he hasn't all night. Im wondering if that means I Should start swaddling again? His startle reflex is still pretty strong and he's only 14 weeks.
  • My LO is 19 weeks tomorrow and he's a big boy, but our pedi told me not to swaddle. She said for his age/size it's not developmentally appropriate. I stopped, and then I went a step farther and took away the sleep sack. I worry he's cold, but he's sleeping better now. Not perfect, but better. I think because he can move more freely and get to his side more easily. At least now when he wakes, I can pop in the paci, he rolls to his side, and is asleep on minutes. Before it was a battle.
  • @amccoy129 that would be this momma's dream! Honestly we haven't even discussed swaddling with the pediatrician. I guess because she never asked. How is your LO's startle reflex? That is the main reason we have to swaddle still. My LO will be 21 weeks tomorrow (she's 40% weight 50% height). She was born 3 weeks early so I take that into consideration too as far as this kind of stuff goes. She's sleeping peacefully swaddled in her crib for this nap but last night she was rolling all over the place even while swaddled which kind of scares us bc she'll be face down on the mattress sometimes so I unswaddled her but she could only sleep that way in her RNP or next to me on the bed in which case I sleep like crap. I feel we are making progress but slow.
  • I still swaddle one arm out. She's 20 weeks on Tuesday. She just grabs and does weird stuff with both arms out. She's still not rolling so I'm not worried about it for swaddling, but I know she's too big for it. Waiting on my sleep sacks from zulily to really pull the trigger.

@virginiaunicorn11 so happy for some progress. I hope it's smoother sailing from here on out and LO gets with the program (of just one or two wake ups)
TTC: 1/2014 BFP: 9/24 EDD: 6/8/2015 Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.
  • I'm rocking the merlin sleep suit over here at 16 weeks. He likes it because he likes to sleep with his arms up like the 'Victory!' Or arms bent at the elbow with hands up even with his face. So he's kinda closer to his preferred position with his arms out to his sides. But it does seem to muffle the startle reflex, so good. His sleep hasn't changed since I started to use it, not for the better, not for the worse.

@ciennah99 well wake ups are still happening every 2-3 hours. It's just he'll go right back to sleep. We transitioned from the rock n play to the crib about 2 weeks ago. The transition was awful because of his startle reflex. I feel like it's gradually getting better and now that he can sleep on his side it non exsistant. The issue is when he rolls back to his back in his sleep. He can get back to his side, but apparently he needs the paci in his mouth to do so. So he cries, I go in, put in the paci, he rolls, and is back asleep in a flash. I'm hoping soon he'll learn to do this on his own.

This is my exact experience with the Merlin. I consider it a win though since he is sleeping at least as well without having to be swaddled.
  • Anyone still reading this thread... I haven't posted much before, but I had to share... My little girl is 18 weeks and huge, but not rolling and on formula. I swaddle her with one arm out because she just isn't ready (tho I keep trying). She has been struggling to go to sleep at night (up every 45 minutes from 6:30-8:30/9), then up at 12, 3, 6, 7:30. I have a toddler, too, so if I can eke out that extra hour in the morning, I take it.

Tonight I tried something new and it really seems to be working (so far). It's called wake to sleep... Basically, you get the baby to lightly stir by touching her cheek or arm, etc. without fully waking up. For naps, 30 mins after she falls asleep. At night, 1 hour before she usually wakes. I tried it for a nap today since she had pretty much stopped napping more than an hour for a week now... Slept 3 hours straight! I couldn't bear to wake her at 2.5 hours. Then, tonight she woke up minutes before 10pm when I was going to stir her, but I figured I would try anyway at 12 since I new she would be up for 1am... I opened her door, saw/heard her wiggle and went back to bed. It is now 4am!!!!!!!!!!! My toddler woke me up at 2:50, and I'm to excited to sleep.

I know it sounds nutty, and it has only been one night. I read it takes 3-5 nights to reset the habit, as long as nothing else is interfering (hunger, sickness, etc). You are suppose to drop one waking at a time.... I will update you all because it is the coolest trick I have EVER used and everyone should know!

You can find more information if you look up "wake to sleep". I hope this is not a first night coincidence, but I will let you know. Rest well!!!

  • ^ I wonder if that's an 'interuppt the sleep cycle' type of thing. Interesting. Curious to see how it continues for ya

It's probably too late for everyone, but for any other cheapskate moms like me who don't want to buy a special expensive swaddle transition suit, we just put LO in a $8 Carter's sleep sack with the arms tied shut. She gets a little bit of arm movement, can't startle, and we'll just put her arms in the sleeves when she's ready.

  • 5 days until she's 4 months. Sleep regression here we come
  • 17 weeks...I think it's happening. LO woke up yesterday at 7, napped for dh from 9-945, and went to daycare. I picked her up at 515 to find out that she took zero naps there all day, though between 7 and 515 she did drink 26oz of breastmilk. So I started the bedtime routine about an hour early at 6. She passed out as soon as she ate. I was like "that wasn't so bad, sweet."

She was WIDE ASS AWAKE from 1-3am, fell asleep on me at 3, woke up as soon as I tried to transfer her at 330, I fed her, she fell right back asleep and went down at 4. Is stirring now st 545 but will hopefully go back down for dh...since I'm now up for the day after getting roughly 4 broken hours of sleep. I hope this regression goes fast. :-/
  • Hi everyone, I'm new to this thread but thought this might be a good place to post this....does anyone's LO insist on tummy sleeping? It's a new habit for my baby that we just can't break (she's 20 weeks and is good at rolling both ways now). The pedi says it's okay since she's strong enough to to roll by I am a nervous wreck and therefore nighttime sucks because I can't sleep when I have one eye open watching the video monitor!!! I keep checking to see/hear her breathing okay on the monitor and this tummy sleeping thing terrifies me! Anyone have any feedback, tips, or anyone feel the same way??
  • ^^yes, there's a whole thread on it, and basically many people share your thoughts. Except you have the added advantage of the pediatrician telling you it's ok.

LO will be 20 weeks on Saturday, and I think, hope, beg, pray that things are getting a little better at night. He's waking several times in his first two hours now, but that's ok because I'm still up. Then he's only waking twice between 11:00-5:00, and then starts another session of several wakings between 5:00 and 6:00/6:30.

Again, still not ideal. But for the first time since August, I think it is actually maybe hopefully getting better!!

@uta10 Many opinions on this. Mine is let her sleep on her tummy. If she can roll, she's probabaly nice and comfy! Mine sleeps so much better on her tummy. Naps used to be 30 min. Now 1hr +
  • @uta10 mine prefers her side which makes DH nervous but I am fine with. She is also rolling all around & it is scary when I catch her face first into the mattress. I try not to worry too much bc there is only so much we can do once they start rolling.

For the sleep regression folks. My LO is 21 weeks now & the last month has been pretty rough but I think/hope we are Turning a corner. She slept 7:30-2:30 Amen! Fed her at 2:30 & 5:30 & she went down fairly well after both. Moved her to my bed at 7, nursed & cuddled & up at 8. Hoping it's not just a fluke!
  • @virginiaunicorn11 that does sound like progress!
@slr1229 4 days left for me

Tho if this sleep regression includes naps, I have to be there. One 20 min nap yesterday. So far cannot get him to nap today unless I'm holding him. I've got two 'put him down only for him to wake up again so I need to start all over' under my belt in the past half hour.
I don't think I'm going to get to eat today

Did you not find a carrier that works for you, @mellymar? If your kid is like mine (hope not, for your sake), you're really going to need it if the big regression happens :-(
Hoping that doesn't come off too know-it-all, and more like a supportive sister...

No worries, I feel ya. I honestly keep forgetting the carrier. It literally just does not enter my mind as an option. Thanks for reminding me. Again.

  • My guy won't nap in his wrap like he used to right now either. He doesn't fuss in it, just stays up. So bogus
  • @uta10 About 3 weeks ago my LO started to roll over in his sleep and it freaked me out for several days to the point where I would stay awake to watch him and kept putting him back on his back. I was frustrated and exhausted. He was struggling to turn his face from side to side and would get stuck in the middle.

But then one night I decided I have got to get some sleep, prayed, and went to bed. LO survived of course and did great! He finally learned to turn his face from side to side. Since then he has been sleeping on his tummy and loves it. He ends up flopping all over the place but he sleeps through the night so I'm fine with that.

His head control has actually gotten better since sleeping on his tummy more.

Middle of the night again & she thinks it's daytime :( Shes rolling all over, bonked her head on the side of crib. Squeeking & squawking so I can't fall back asleep. I'm trying to balance comforting her with letting her work it out on her own. Trying to stick it out with the crib transition but tonight is pretty rough. She might in up in bed with me. I hate to do that but I've got to get some sleep. I'm giving it another half hour.

ETA: with 12 minutes to go baby is sleeping in her crib, swaddled with arms out mind you so we are making progress. A week ago we had her fully swaddled in the RNP still.
  • Well LO may sleep tonight but I sure won't...she's having a reaction to her 4 month vaccines, complete with 101.4 degree fever (under arm), zero appetite, and so much vomit. I'm going to be hovering over her 24/7 until she's back to normal. Sigh.
  • @delujm0 I'm so sorry she's having a reaction! I hope you both can get some rest...
  • @delujm0 oh no. :( I'm sorry to hear that's happening. Hopefully your DH will give you a break overnight or tomorrow so you can get some rest

  • Thanks ladies. Unfortunately I have to go into the office tomorrow morning for a meeting so dh will be in charge around here, while I try not to pass out. As if a 3.5 hour meeting wouldn't be boring enough, now I'll actually be sleep deprived during it. Sigh. Hopefully my boss won't care if I leave right after it ends to come relieve dh so he can get a little work done too. Poor lo looks like she may finally be going to sleep now. She's been eating normally without vomiting since she woke up at 10:30, so hopefully she's almost over this.
  • @delujm0 I'm so sorry she had a reaction. It's always scary if this happens. DS had it happen one time. Everything turned out fine. Good luck on the night watch and tomorrow!
  • Past several nights are spent listening to her whine and make sounds (not unhappy cries but still very loud and very much awake) from about 2-4:30 am.... When I finally can't take it and see that she is no closer to falling asleep on her own I go in and soothe her or offer the bottle... She often falls right back asleep in my arms only to wake up and do the same thing again as soon as I put her back in crib.... She was such an amazing sleeper last month wahhhh
