Nighttime still sucks........

Re: Nighttime still sucks........

  • @delujm0 @dancegurl1118 our doc gave us a nebulizer to keep and we can give LO a concentrated saline mist treatment to ease her congestion. Not sure if your docs could do the same?

She's usually a good sleeper but this cold is killing us. She doesn't want to lay flat (but a wedge means she just rolls to the end of the crib)... She takes several "put downs" to settle and she's waking a lot. The other night at 1 am she was inconsolable. Screaming like we have never heard before!

    And oh she's teething.

So right now our bedtime routine is nebulizer, Tylenol for tooth, and feed to sleep... Trying to keep the Tylenol to a minimum though.

  • @virginiaunicorn11 hope tonight goes smoother as well! But...that dang dog better be quiet.
TTC: 1/2014 BFP: 9/24 EDD: 6/8/2015 Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.

I don't know if it's the four month sleep regression, teething or what but this has been a rocky few nights. LO had no problem transitioning to her room last week (still in the RNP) but this week not so much. We've tried the crib, RNP, swaddle large she wiggles out of, the small size she's too long for & the Merlin suit but I think that's too hot for her right now. After getting up every half hour or so last night (& giving Tylenol for inconsolable screaming which is not like her) I gave up too @lovethatcolosun & just had her sleep with me the rest of the night. I was honestly too tired to move her. The night before DH slept in her room from 1-7 & kept popping the pacifier back in to soothe her which showed us she wasn't necessarily hungry. We are going to try the crib again but we've got to sleep to function at work so may not really give it a go til the weekend. DH doesn't want to put her in the crib fully swaddled in case she rolls over but even with one arm out she just is too jerky & startles herself awake. Crib transition is hard. Good luck to everyone else & hoping for a good or at least ok nights sleep!

ETA Miss Houdini here got both arms out of the swaddle in under 60 seconds! I put the paci back in & she's calm so maybe will sleep?! No that was short lived.
  • Coffee. Gallons and gallons of coffee.

Ladies keep your heads up! This HAS to end for you sometime !!!
My kid has never been a great sleeper but lately it's gotten better (esp for my DH while I'm working go figure)
My LO is younger than all of yours (6/22) so here's to hoping melly and I don't go through this regression....
    It's sounding not hopeful though!
  • Bless you @Marcantonio
I needed to hear that tonight.
  • When LO had her out of character 1 am screaming wake up I told DH to follow the "rules" and not do anything we wouldn't normally do at 1 am.. So no food, just comfort. After 10 min he was like YOUR PLAN SUCKS LADY! And we gave up, fed her and have her Tylenol. Oh well...
  • This new mattress must be magic. LO just slept 8.5 hours. I COULD CRY. I hope this means we're getting past the sleep regression.

I'm shopping for one! Which is this magical mattress?
  • ^^^ I need to know too!
  • Lately LO has been alternating ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE nights with ones where she sleeps clear through the night, or only eats once.  It has looked like this:

Sunday night: Slept from 8-4:30am, went back to sleep until 7:30am after eating

Monday night: Went to bed at 8, woke up crying at midnight, 1am, 2am, 330am, and 5am (bonus: she screamed from 2-230 and would only eat at midnight and 330)

Tuesday night: Slept from 8-5 without waking up at all (woke up at 5 due to coughing fit - stupid cold)

WHAT WILL TONIGHT BRING.  I'm going to pretend this is the regression (she turned 16 weeks on Sunday) and that maybe she'll only be terrible every other night so I won't be on a complete sleep deficit?  Her going to bed routine has been pretty lame for the last week...she'll fall asleep nursing, I'll wait 20 minutes and put her in the crib, she'll wake up and start crying immediately, and we'll start all over again...it always works the second time.  But I'd like to find a way for it to NOT take 90 minutes to get her to sleep.

  • Fed at midnight the up at 4:30. We let her moan until I got her at 6:15. Go.to.sleep.
  • And how did @virginiaunicorn11 night go, with the dog not barking at all hours? Did baby sleep maybe a little more? I hope so...

  • Not nighttime related, but it is sleep related. I CANNOT get the kid to nap! Unless he falls asleep on the boob and stays laying on the boppy. And not to sound selfish (too late) but how does that help me? I can't clean the house, I can't eat, I can't do a load of laundry, I can't refill my water bottle, I can't check out the Huggies deal someone posted about because I don't have room on my lap for my laptop, I can't nap myself, I can't even properly position myself to write in his journal for him. I can't do anything except sit there with a baby leaning against my chest. Which is nice, absolutely, and each time I remind myself how short these moments are and how much I cherish them, but I'd like to empty the dishwasher, ya know?

Thanks for asking! He had two long stretches, and then I fell asleep with him in the big bed in his room from 2:15-4:45. I tried leaving and putting him in his PnP after that, and we battled for an hour until I just co-slept with him. He slept, I didn't. Up for the day at 7:30.

Overall, we are either up to 2+ hour intervals (yay!) or battling every 30 minutes (yuck). But this is actually a positive trend. I need to remind myself of that!

And the dog was a perfect angel!!

Have you tried wearing him during a nap? Mine loves my solly baby wrap and will sleep for at least an hour. Mine won't nap otherwise unless being held or in his mammaroo.
  • ^^ knew there was something I was overlooking. Thanks @jesshrou

@virginiaunicorn11 it is a positive trend. I hope it keeps improving!

All of this exactly, me too. Except the kicker is that when I'm not here and dh is in charge, or when she's at daycare, she will nap in her crib or a swing no problem. When I'm home if I put her down to nap she loses her shit.
  • ^^ yes!! He naps when my DH is home for like an hour each time! So he looks at me like I'm effing nuts when I complain about the lack of naps and ability to do stuff. Wth, baby? You're making me look bad

  • This cold is killing me.  Last night LO had a coughing fit that woke her up at 2.  She had another coughing fit while I fed her that caused her to spit up SO MUCH MILK EVERYWHERE.  After cleaning that up and feeding her some more, she was unable to fall asleep laying down, so I had to rock her upright for her to fall asleep.  She slept on me that way for an hour and then I fed her again, she fell asleep, I tried to transfer her to the crib, I failed, I put her back on my boob, she fell asleep again, and finally the transfer took.

So I was up from 2-4:45.  And then she was up for the day at 6:30.  Normally I have to start getting ready for work at 5 but I'm working from home today because LO got sent home from daycare yesterday with diarrhea and we had to bring her to the doctor this morning to get a note so we could take her back there.  He said that the diarrhea was probably related to the cold, and that since she's in daycare we should assume she'll basically have this cold for the next 4-5 months.  UGH.

I hope we at least continue her trend where she alternates STTN with HORRIBLE COLD NONSENSE, because I'd really like to sleep tonight.

  • @virginiaunicorn11 you're not a jackass! There was no way to know he wouldn't like the pnp mattress. Some babies do just fine with the pnp mattress. I'm glad he slept for longer for ya last night, tho! Hopefully once his official mattress comes he will continue that trend

  • @delujm0 Our sleep over here this week is just as inconsistent. For DH when I work he sleeps through the night completely........... While I'm home like last night he woke up at 345...... Why kid why!!!!
  • My LO screamed everytime we'd lay him down and took forever to console. This went on for 2 1/2 hours. I almost gave him Tylonol because I felt something was off. Went to his four month today and pedi feels pretty sure he has an ear infection. There was so much build up around his ear she couldn't tell for sure. I feel horrible, even though there's no way I could have known.

@virginiaunicorn11 so not your fault but I can totally relate. In a way, it'll be nice when they can talk!
  • ^^ relatedly, I was thinking how when I was shopping for diapers the other day and on amazon Huggies reports that I should 6-7 of the diapers I prefer. Ha! How about 10? Or more? Because I'm pretty sure he pees more often than I change him

  • I was recently reading an article about how sleeping through the night is a western culture created idea, and how evolutionary wise there aren't many times that people slept from 9p-6a. Additionally, world wide most cultures sleep in communal family beds where baby probably has free access to nurse throughout the night. There is so much pressure for a baby to sleep through the night these days and people try and put some value on it. I feel "oh is she sleeping through the night?!" Has replaced the never ending "how are you feeling?" question from pregnancy. And like I mentioned previously, her sleeping has nothing to do with me she just set that for herself. But I just don't want you ladies to think something's wrong with your babies because they're still waking to feed. It just stinks that it's some ideal to STTN when that may not be what's best for the baby at the moment.

  • Trying the Merlin sleep suit & crib for the first time tonight. She's been taking shorter naps in her crib swaddled. Watching her on the monitor in the Merlin she seems to keep startling herself awake. Everytime she's almost asleep that startle reflex goes off & wakes her again. Other than initial fussing because she just didn't want to go to bed she seems to be settling herself back down. Anyone have a similar experience? I don't want her to sleep poorly because of this, as in not get good quality sleep. Do I just see how the night goes & how she is tomorrow? We could go back to the swaddle I guess but she rolls all over the place in it so not sure that would be much of an improvement as that wakes her too!

Put her on her tummy, I bet it will be a huge great improvement

    @HayesRN13
That would probably freak my husband out but maybe we could try it at nap time.
ETA tonight at least she seems to be winding up on her side (we went ahead & swaddled). Merlin forces her on her back so just might not be her thing.
  • Another night of going to bed at 11 and being up from 2 on. All while LO and DH sleep peacefully...

Boooo, sorry, lady. Sending you Ambien fumes and a big hug

Bah! This sucks. Becoming a mom just flips a 'sleep like crap' switch, I guess? I sleep so crappy now, constant tossing and turning and waking up... I feel ya. I'm sorry

  • @virginiaunicorn11 woot woot! This is an awesome development in the sleep department. Your LO is making some strides in the right direction over there, hooray!

  • I'm feeling the Events leap in full swing. LO did not want to sleep alone last night. Up every hour from 11-3, then brought her to bed, transferred her back, up an hour later, brought her back to bed with me until 7. Add to that a crying DS who was up twice because of bad dreams....this too shall pass, this too shall pass.
