Re: Baby Names

  • Now that we are having a girl, I absolutely love the name Mackenzie! I'll call her Kenzie for short. I like Mackenzie Jordan, but he says it sounds too white? And since our baby is korean and african he wants something more ethnic. He's crazy I think.
I don't think it's crazy that your SO wants a name that represents your ethnicity. I'm Asian and my husband is Caucasian. We decided to give our first a 'white' first name and give an Asian name for middle name to represent my heritage. We didn't really use an Asian 'name' but more of a meaningful word that's also easy to spell and pronounce. We plan to do the same for this one.

Saw another bad first name online today: Phelan.
No idea which way to pronounce that letter e...but either way the name is awful, poor kid.

Also makes me wonder what the last name is because if it's a long e sound, that could be really bad.

I really think parents should say names out loud when choosing & pick one that will not be awful. Lol.

Phelan is an Irish name pronounced fey-lon. I see nothing wrong with it and it's a legit name.
I've never seen this name and immediately read it as felon. Unfortunately, I think a lot of people would read it that way too.

  • So glad we found out we are having a girl, because the boy names my SO had picked I did not like... He wanted Thor, Hulk, King, Prince. Basically anything superhero or a title.

And since our baby is korean and african he wants something more ethnic. He's crazy I think. I also like Mackenzie Lailani. He wants the baby to be named something where he can call her Keke. I am not a fan at all. My response was boooooooo! And I don't think he realizes, the baby will already have his last name which is african and hard to pronounce. Its Ngalula, with a silent N. Hard enough to get a name that flows. The struggle is real lol.

I don't really think McKenzie Jordan sounds white, but I do think it sounds masculine. I would do a feminine middle name to balance out the unisex first name. Lailani is very pretty but the three names together are quite a mouthful.

I actually really like the name Prince for a first born boy. My Great-Grandfathers name was Prince. According to Nameberry, it's really gaining back popularity these days. I love the unique, old names.

Good luck! McKenzie is cute :)

  • FYI -- For those who are considering the name Addison/ Addie and such;
as you probably saw on the news, FDA just approved some female sex enhancement drug (think Viagra for women) and they are going to be marketing it under the name "Addyi" (pronounced Add-ee). If this drug gets as big as viagra or Cialis, the name Addie/ Addison, may be similar to having a boy named "Viagra"...
    Just a thought...

THIS BETTER NOT HAPPEN! We've had Adeline (Addie for short) picked out for seven years! She would be named after my Grammy! I think that this won't be a problem though, because thinking about it "Viagra" to my knowledge was not a name commonly used at all before the drug existed, whereas Addie/Adeline/Addison etc. have been names for quite some time. Still, BOOOOOOOOOOO!
    It's happened.
Well I just mean the automatic association of the drug and the name. I'm hoping it will blow over and not be a huge thing because, like I said, Addie has been a name longer than a drug gosh darn it!
That really stinks! I love the name. Another reason name discussions are important, lol :)

I think we'll still use it if we have a girl. Like I said, there are a ton of "Addie" girls out there already and I don't think this drug is going to be more common than the normal use of the name . . . and it's after my Grammy! I talked it over with the hubby and he agrees. I do hope that I'm not wrong and this won't backfire in the long run . . .

  • @bigred226 I'm not for sure how to pronounce Imogen. Immediately I say in my head "Ima gene" Is that correct?

Im (take the IM sound of 'him") -ojen

  • camusoh2011 I love the name Veronica. It reminds me of Veronica Mars and that association is of a strong, badass girl
  • I THINK Caroline is going to be the girl winner.... Thinking about middle names and have three ideas so far: Caroline Eleanor Caroline Sophia Caroline Sage (family name) Last name is Hall. What do you ladies think?
I like Caroline Sage! but all the options are really pretty; I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

    Caroline Eleanor
    Caroline Sophia
    Caroline Sage (family name)

Caroline actually sounds good with all of those options, sorry I'm not helpful at all. The middle names you picked all sound classic with Caroline!
I always like using a family name so maybe that one unless the others have a special meaning

  • @wisco29 haha this is going to be my struggle. I love the classic sound of all of them. Guess this list will be held up until we actually see baby and decide :) . Thank you for your help-- I actually prefer hearing that my name choices are good versus the alternative :D
  • @dragonfly321 I LOVE Caroline. It's such a sweet name

@MrsJG3 Yeah, those would be unfortunate initials. A friend of mine has the triple "K" initials which also sucks

We have found several first names that won't work with AG.

    Triple K is awful.

My vote is for Caroline Eleanor, but I'm biased because I'm a big Eleanor Roosevelt fan.  I think Caroline is classic and lovely, by the way.

  • We decided on one name for each gender. Travis Vincent is the boy, and Mariah April is the girl. I had a ton of names and hubs shot them ALL down but these two!
  • We've decided on one name for each gender, even though a few people keep trying to change our minds. I swear what no one understands is that I want to keep our children's name with our heritage, which we share, Irish. Boy - Sean Tristan Girl - Keira McKenna I understand both of the first names are after celebrities, but honestly, I really don't care. My husband's name is John and Sean is the Irish version of John. We just liked Keira. I will be a little surprised if anyone can connect McKenna to anything, as I don't think it's too common, but I could be wrong.
I didn't connect either of these names with celebrities until you mentioned it.  I think they're great!
  • @amandabobanda I didn't connect them with celebrities until I saw the thread about someone wanting to use Radley as a name and I saw someone say something to the effect of make sure you're ok with the name possibly being connected to a celebrity with a less that "pretty" background...aka Robert Downey Jr or Gary Busey, etc. Lol. Then I thought about the names we chose and I'm like, hmph, Sean Penn and Keira Knightley, go figure. Oh well. Lol.
  • edited September 2015
Sean is a really common name- I don't think there is an apparent celebrity connection at all. That's like saying Anne is after a celeb because Anne Hathaway exists. I wouldn't worry about that.
It's different if the name was "Madonna"

I really like both names.  My mom's friend legally changed her last name to McKenna, a name she chose for herself after a painful divorce, and I forget what it means, but I think it has to do with strength? Anyway, I've never heard it used as a middle name, but I really like it, especially if you've got Irish roots.  Both are nice, straightforward names.

  • @acuteangles I wasn't going with the Irish meaning of McKenna. I'll have to look it up to see what it means.
Anyway, actually, I got the name McKenna from one of my most favorite movies ever...Somewhere in Time with Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeves. Jane's name in the movie was Elise McKenna, but she was mostly referred to as McKenna or Kenna.
  • Just found out we are having a baby boy. My husband likes the name Liam Alan, but I'm not 100% sold on the name just yet.

Congrats on the healthy boy!!  I like both Liam and Alan, but they are kind of a tongue twister together.  Is there a family significance to either name?

Ditto. I really love these two names! I'm partial to Tristan because that's the name of the main character in the book I'm working on <3

The hubs named our first son Jacob Nelson after himself and his family.
So I basically have full reign on what to name our child but I keep second guessing myself, and he doesn't like some of the names I pick lol.
So far I have Ellie and Melody for a girl with the MN Jean. But the hubby doesn't like Ellie, and the more I think about Melody it sounds like a stripper name...
For a boy I have Jude, Oliver, Carter and Xavier with the MN Allen. And I'm not really 100% sold on any of those FNs.
(The middle names are family names)

I feel like we are going to take the next 25weeks trying to find a name for this little one. Atleast in 4 weeks at my a/s we'll know which one to focus on. We aren't announcing the name until birth to anyone lol.

    Help /:

    *edited for sp& add on.

I absolutely love Elodie as a girl's name. Granted if it's pronounced the French way, it's Élodie, but you could still use Ellie as a nn and it has the same sound as Melody without the connotation you're giving to that name!

I like all your boys names, so I'm no help there.
  • I'm nervous about posting these as we arent sharing in real life! But it would be nice to get some opinions :) We are having a baby girl. Our favorite name is Charlotte but we likely will not use it because it has entered the top 10 and as a teacher I am seeing it more and more! It's too bad because my wife and I both really love it. Then we have Etta which is my great great grandmother's name and just kind of cool! Something different from the Ella's.The only other option we have come up with is Aveline (av-eh-leen) which I really like a lot...I think it's beautiful and different without being weird. Our last name is a simple, fairly common one so we are lucky there.
    Thoughts?

We are playing with ideas and so far have Annabelle Marie and Colton Paul (my husvabds dad's name). I love the girls name Cosima but I am reserving it for my next kitten as its too unusual for my husband haha

I had a German friend with the name Cosima! She went by Cosi. I liked it.

Okay so DH is literally the most stubborn kid name person ever. The ONLY boy name he likes is Joel. Don't get me wrong, I like the name. It's simple and traditional and it goes well with DS's name, James. I just don't LOVE it. I wanted to go with Owen or Oliver or something to that effect. For his middle name I want to honor my grandfather who owned a bakery which I have fond memories of and also who I got my love of baking from. His name was Duane. (I don't love that either but still want to honor him.) So our very dull boys name: Joel Duane....

For a girl We were set on Aria Ann for a very long time. Aria because we both love the name and Ann because it's 70% of both our families female middle names. Then my sister gave me the impression she wanted us to use her middle name and I told her we would. Marie. I don't like Aria Marie. For whatever reason it just doesn't roll off of my tongue the same. So now the only other girl name DH likes is Ellie. I like Elle (pronounced "L" ) better but he said it was too hipster. We compromised on Ellie with the intention that we, or everyone but DH, will call her Elle. So our girl name is now Ellie Marie/ Elle Marie. Funny side note about that my FIL's step daughter's little girl's name is Ellie Marie too. But they call her Ellie.

  • We normally choose two names and then decide once baby is born to see if they "fit" their name. This time round we can only agree on one name Olivia Faye and can't come up with a second option. I know Olivia is common but so is everything else we seem to come close to agreeing on. Good thing there is still so long to go :/

I like Etta and Aveline (but know that it will be mispronounced a lot). I grew up with a last name that was never mispronounced and now my married name is mispronounced ALL THE TIME and it drives me up the wall. I don't know if it's just because I went through most of my  life not experiencing it, but I personally wouldn't want my kid to feel like this.

I also personally have to agree with dropping Charlotte because it got too popular. For years we said we were going to name our daughter Scarlett, but even that is too similar to the Charlottes.

I think you made the right call on dropping Charlotte from the running because of its popularity.  I think Aveline is really pretty, but I like Etta even more.  It's simple, classy, and since it is a family name, there is a special meaning behind it for you.
