Re: Baby Names

  • I like Jack more than Johnny.

    Maybe I'm just difficult but I'd be pitching a fit over H thinking he'd be determining full name and nn without my input or compromise. There's just no way that would ever happen for me. I don't think that's an equitable way to make decisions in a partnership, period.

    Yeah I agree with this. If you don't get a say in the name, you should be able to have some input in the nickname. That's just not fair. On a side note my husband's dad's name is Michael, and his cousin is Michael, and all the boys have Michael middle names. When we get together I really have no idea who is talking about who. It's way too much for me so we are going nowhere near the Michael route.

    Is John an important family tradition? I assume so, hey? I get why it would be quite important to him, but I also think you should be able to get some input too! Ps I'm also voting for Jack ;)

    we had a BIG fight

    it boils down to this is really important to him and I make nearly every other decision... especially when it comes to where we live. He wants to move to Atlanta and i refuse -- so I feel like I owe him :(

  • My cousins name is actually John William and they call him Will (short for William obviously)
    image
  • How do we feel about Johnny?

    My husband is John William IV and son will have to be John Willian V. DH is refusing any variation of John that doesn't contain the word "John". I already tried for Jack and he was dead set against it.

    It's not a battle I'm going to win this time around so full name will be John William, but do we like Johnny as a nickname or is it too corny?
    I realize he may grow out of it when he gets older, but I mean for now - as a baby/kid.

    It's either that or calling him John William. I really don't want two Johns so both people are answering when I call their name.

    My husband's brother is John Jr. and the family all calls him "Johnny". Professionally and with his friends, he is John. It works pretty well for him, I think, though I guess I've never asked how HE feels about it.
  • Scout is not a girl's name, regardless of To Kill a Mockingbird, which it looks like is where you pulled most of your inspiration; it's just a nickname. I can't imagine an adult woman named Scout.
    I actually have a friend who named her daughter Harper. Her sister had a little girl shortly after and named her Scout. I'm not saying I'm in love with either (Harper is getting to popular for my like), but it's out there.

  • FYI -- For those who are considering the name Addison/ Addie and such;
    as you probably saw on the news, FDA just approved some female sex enhancement drug (think Viagra for women) and they are going to be marketing it under the name "Addyi" (pronounced Add-ee). If this drug gets as big as viagra or Cialis, the name Addie/ Addison, may be similar to having a boy named "Viagra"...
    Just a thought...

    Whenever I hear the name Addison, I always think of Addison's disease.

    I'm not really a fan of any y ending nicknames, i.e. Johnny, Billy, etc. I think because I'm Kimberly and disliked Kimmy. I love Jack!!! I wish he would go for that or even calling him William. :(

    I guess I still don't think a marriage should be tit-for-tat. If you're going to begrudge the name of your (if I'm remembering correctly) first born because your husband wouldn't compromise I think that will make you sad long term. If he wants the birth certificate name and you have to miss out on the fun of searching for a baby name then just stand your ground. Explain to him that it's important to you that your baby's name isn't only a reflection of his family tree and his desires. After all, it is half yours even if it is a boy.

    Plus, maybe as you get to know the child he'll prove to be more of a Jack than a Johnny? I don't know. I'm stubborn, and an only child, so maybe my advice isn't the best. Haha.

  • I've been throwing around boy names in my head for weeks, but we just found out we're having a girl and I can't think of girl names at all, much less ones we would agree on.  Hubby is stuck on Mildred, because he had a grandma Millie - her real name was Camille- so no I'm not sticking a child with the name Mildred right now.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Camille is beautiful! And Millie is a super cute nickname. Why doesn't he want to use that straight up? Mildred, no thanks.
    Edit: quote fail
    A girl in my first BMB had a Millicent, nn Millie. I love it!
    We found out we're having a boy! So the name is Ezra Calvin Cutright!
  • @inomniaparatus fwiw my uncle is Jonathan William Jr. He passed it down to my cousin too. My uncle went by Johnny when he was young, but grew out of it professionally. Now Johnny is just used by my mom and her sisters. My cousin actually goes by Jonathan but he's only 5 so I'm not sure how long that will stick.
  • Opinions needed (and wanted), please. We are team green and quickly knew our girl name like 30 minutes after finding out we were pregnant: Annabelle "Annie" Grace. But we have gone back and forth on a boy. Right now, we are leaning towards Calvin Louis. Louis after my grandpa...and we just like Calvin. We told DH's parents today and they both flared their nostrils. We really like how it sounds with our last name, but I don't want to watch people flare their nostrils everytime we share the name. Thoughts on Calvin Louis?!
    Anyone have any thoughts on Amelia Ann vs. Penny Lee? They are names we like + family names, just not sure which we like best.
    penny lee reminds me of penny lane- although, i doubt there will be many beatles fans around as she grows up :)
    Our girl name is Penelope Leigh and I'm pretty sure MIL and FIL will be calling her Penny Lane which we are cool with. The Beatles are awesome
  • We are team green! If we have a girl she's going to be Cara Jane because it's mix of all 4 parents names. For a boy we are thinking Quinn but can't come up with a middle name.
    Calvin louis is adorable! Don't let other people judge your name if you love it. They will get over it.
    People hated dd's name but when we finally told people we told everyone all at once so no one could really say anything.
    We shared the name at thanksgiving with having everyone do a puzzle.
  • @cvolkmar I love Calvin Louis. Annabelle reminds me of the insidious movies is it? I can't remember. Anyway, the name has always freaked me out since then...I do like Annie though.
  • Saw another bad first name online today: Phelan.
    No idea which way to pronounce that letter e...but either way the name is awful, poor kid.
    Also makes me wonder what the last name is because if it's a long e sound, that could be really bad.
    I really think parents should say names out loud when choosing & pick one that will not be awful. Lol.
  • I may have asked this before, but I'm too lazy to go through and find out. One of the girl names on our list right now is Veronica. DH was the one to suggest it; we both like it. That being said, I would probably call her Ronnie (Roni? not sure on spelling there yet). DH isn't a fan of the nn. What are your thoughts? Any other suggestions on how to shorten it?
    I went to school with a Veronica nn Ronnie and no one made any weird comments or anything. I also like Veronica but DH vetoed it bc he associates it with Billy Madison :(
    I like Ronnie for Veronica. The spelling of Roni reminds me of Rice A Roni. I'm Danielle and go by Danie because I don't like the double n either. Maybe Ronie :)
  • @dminaya good point on the Roni spelling. While I do love me some rice it just didn't look right anyway. Ronie isn't so bad. I think the nn is cute, but DH just gives me a side eye like it's horrible. It may mean it's just not our name, but for now it stays on the list.
  • I saw the most hilarious spelling of a girl's name on tv earlier...Alycesaundra!!!! Guessing it is Alexandra/Alessandra. Reminded me of a dinosaur! (I apologise if this is anyone's child's name!)
    I have a family member in the Netherlands named Veroniek (Dutch version of Veronica) and she goes by Vero (vee-row) or Ver (Veer) all the time. But I suppose what's common there might not be here.
  • For girl, Elaina Sage
    While there are definitely pros & cons, one advantage of being pregnant without a partner involved is getting to choose the baby's name on my own :) Well...plenty of input from family & friends but ultimately.
    Elaina is a variation of my mom's name & Sage to honor my late grandmother who was my favorite, closest person in my life.
    Sage wasn't my grandmothers name (her name isn't one I'd like to use), but growing up she had this gorgeous sage bush that's still in the yard today. I love my memories of our time gardening & of that sage, how it smelled, how it looked, watering it in the summer to keep it alive...so Sage will remind me of her & the memories.
    I also kinda like the heated debate on whether or not Sage is a girl's name.
    For a boy, I'm torn. I have a feeling I'm having a boy, too, so pressure is on.
    THIS BETTER NOT HAPPEN! We've had Adeline (Addie for short) picked out for seven years! She would be named after my Grammy! I think that this won't be a problem though, because thinking about it "Viagra" to my knowledge was not a name commonly used at all before the drug existed, whereas Addie/Adeline/Addison etc. have been names for quite some time. Still, BOOOOOOOOOOO!
    It's happened.
    Well I just mean the automatic association of the drug and the name. I'm hoping it will blow over and not be a huge thing because, like I said, Addie has been a name longer than a drug gosh darn it!
    That really stinks! I love the name. Another reason name discussions are important, lol :)
  • So glad we found out we are having a girl, because the boy names my SO had picked I did not like... He wanted Thor, Hulk, King, Prince. Basically anything superhero or a title.
    Now that we are having a girl, I absolutely love the name Mackenzie! I'll call her Kenzie for short. I like Mackenzie Jordan, but he says it sounds too white? And since our baby is korean and african he wants something more ethnic. He's crazy I think. I also like Mackenzie Lailani. He wants the baby to be named something where he can call her Keke. I am not a fan at all. My response was boooooooo! And I don't think he realizes, the baby will already have his last name which is african and hard to pronounce. Its Ngalula, with a silent N. Hard enough to get a name that flows. The struggle is real lol.
    One of my oldest friends is named Amelia Ann so I pick that one
    I love Amelia! It's on my list, but I think for girl #1 I'm going w a name honoring my mom. Loved Amelia Earhart since I was a kid & one of my favorite quotes is from her ("...fears are but paper tigers...") so think that's a great namesake :)
    I'm with you on that. My husband wanted a Hector III. He is now agreeing to a different name. He is Dominican and wants a Spanish name but I say the baby has a Spanish last name. The baby is half me and half him lol and he has the last name.
    I have a really good friend name Thor! It's totally normal to me now, because that's just his name, but it's absolutely hilarious to see people's reactions if I start talking about him.
    Thank goodness you're having a girl! Even if I have a good association with one of those names, they're pretty ridiculous for a child. Agree with PP, he needs a puppy to name!
