Nighttime sucks. That is all.

Re: Nighttime sucks. That is all.

  • LO started Prevacid on wed and progressively has gotten more fussy and then yesterday was one of the worst days of my life where all she slept was one hour which is so unlike her and then cried all day and all evening without eating from 3 pm and on... I literally almost brought her to an urgent care bc I could not console her at all :( then finally at 930 she fell asleep but not a full sleep and has fussed and squirmed all night now. I found out from research that Prevacid can do this so I'm so pissed bc we can't figure out her meds causing her reflux to be terrible on top of it! Ugh my poor girl and I'm about to lose it bc there has been no sleep for me at all!
Screw giving her that crap in the morning! This is why I hate medicine ...sometimes it makes thing 100x worse!

Thanks for giving me somewhere to rant on and please wish me luck! Hope your night was better !

  • My baby is still sleeping...it's 8:30. He ate at 5:30 and played for about 30 minutes. I actually feel super rested! I'm in disbelief but rested! Sorry to those of you that had shitty nights.
  • LO is going through a leap right now and has been super needy/clingy the last couple of days. The evenings right around the time we get her ready for bed (8-9) have been fun. On and off cries/screams for 30 mins and then she'll finally eat and not scream at the sight of the bottle and then pass out.

Any mommas out there with 8 week old that still only does one 3 hour stretch for their long stretch ? I feel like I'm the only one struggling with this still :(

Me :( I think it must just be us! We had one four hour stretch once two weeks ago. It was a total fluke. 3 hours is lucky, too. Usually it's every 2-2.5. LO is 9 weeks as of yesterday. When will it get better?!
  • @paige0704 LO is 8 weeks old and was doing at max 3 hour stretches until last night when he went 7 1/2 hours!!! I'm sure it was a complete and total fluke, but it showed me that he can do it! The only thing I did differently was nurse him and then "top him off" with about 2 oz of breastmilk in a bottle so I knew he was nice and full. We've also been using the Merlins Magic Sleep Suit, which he seems to like. Just know you're definitely not alone, I'll be back to three hour stretches tomorrow night I'm sure!
  • I just FREAKED OUT. I woke up at 6 and LO was still sleeping (normal, she went to bed an hour later last night). I looked at the monitor and in my just waking up haze it looked like her blanket was over her face...I ran into her room..really she had just scooted so her face was out of view of the camera.

  • I'm in total zombie mode. I started back to work a week and a half ago. Our twins went from sleeping 6-7 hour stretches at night to not sleeping at night. One twin sleeps pretty well, but the other wakes up screaming within 20 minutes of putting her down. Tonight, we put both of them down and within 2 minutes they were both up screaming. We've fed them again, tried rocking, walking around, gas drops and the swing. They're still awake at 5:30am. They haven't slept all night. We try to keep them awake a few hours before bed to make sure they're tired for bed. Nothing seems to work! Anyone have any suggestions? We're at our wits end here!

  • @dancegurl1118 holy shit, that would freak me out too. My LO wiggles all over the place also. So glad that was the case for you.

I'm so tired right now. We're going through a leap and transitioning LO to sleep in her pack n play at night instead of her rock n play. The transition is working thank Jesus (she hasn't slept in the RnP once in the last 3 nights) but with this leap the stretches have been shorter (2-3 hrs vs 4-5). This just as I was getting used to the 4-5 hr stretches of sleep for myself. Boo.
  • slr1229 said:

Knock on wood, past two nights she's given me 5+ hours straight before first night feeding, then has gone back to bed for an additional 2 1/2 hours. Praise Jesus I hope this sticks!

and nope. Back to 4 hour stretch last night. Dab nabit.

Me! Its like 3 1/2 to 4 hours between feeds, but that doesn't count the time spent getting baby back to sleep, which averages half an hour to 45 min, sometimes an hour. The best stretch is the first one cause usually he is tired already (the 9 or 10pm to 1 or 2am), meaning after I wash his bottle I have the chance for a 3 hour stretch of sleep myself - IF I can fall asleep. Usually it takes me at least half an hour or longer, thus resulting in less than 3 hours of sleep. Sometimes his second sleep is only 2-3 hours, leaving us both waking up again before the sun

  • LO went from regularly sleeping until 7-730 to getting up at 545 the past two days, despite going down at the same time as always (between 930-10). Maybe this will eventually cause the 730-8pm bedtime we're trying to implement to stick? For the past week we start bedtime around 730 and she will fall asleep twice for only 20 minutes before eventually actually falling asleep around 930. When my friends talk about their kids that sleep 12 hours at night I wonder if we will ever get there.

At least this way she technically only has one "middle of the night" feed? But that's just because she used to go back down after the second one and now she just gets up for the day. Sigh. It makes the first nap pretty early though. Should we be napping less at 9 weeks? Until last week when we went on Zantac she basically refused to nap but now she'll nap 3-4 times for a total of 5-6 hours. Keeping her awake when she wants to nap usually means we get to hear her scream nonstop so I'm loathe to do that, but I don't see many options here.

I know that "sleep begets sleep" but she's resisting the earlier bedtime so I'm not sure how to make that happen.

Right there with you! I celebrated 3 hours last night! I would be so excited for 4.

I did wake up at 445 with his swaddle over his face! makes me a nervous wreck. He still likes the swaddle so i can't transition him out yet.
  • @jesshrou ugh! So scary! All I was thinking as I ran in there was "please be breathing...please be breathing".

  • Just last week I was on here at my wits end with a 9 week old that went from sleeping in 2 5-hour stretches to only sleeping in 2-3 hour stretches at night. It all came too during the week I started back 12-hour shifts at work so I was beyond exhausted. Everyone reassured me he was probably just going through a leap. I wanted to believe them but wasn't sure, I thought it had to be my milk supply going down or something in the evenings since he is EBF. I tried pumped bottles and formula bottles at night thinking if I got him good and full that would help with no success. Then all of a sudden, a miracle happened! He has slept 10 hours (from 9pm-7am) for the last 5 days! He has also made some developmental milestones as well so I think it was definitely a leap! I just hope he keeps this up because I feel like a new woman! I am writing this post not to brag, but to give those of you hope who feel like your LO has taken a step back in the sleep department. They could just be going through a developmental leap. One day you too will have your sanity back and it will be glorious!
  • My kiddo is 8 weeks and all of a sudden has sucked on her hands all the time now. Interesting since that's a 12 week leap thing

I love hearing stories like this. It gives me so much hope things will get better!
  • @slr1229 my LO started sucking on her hands at about 8 weeks as well. Still going strong at 12...

  • So my LO was sleeping 5-6 hour stretches (with a dream feed around 11) before I went back to work. Since I've been back & she's been in daycare, she's only been doing 2-4 hour stretches. I'm wondering if it's my milk supply going down (got fenugreek to try today), or if she just likes nursing more when she knows I'm near. At daycare they've got her on 4oz every 3 hours. At home it's about every 2-3 hours. Ugh.
At least she eats & goes RIGHT back to bed with no fuss. Can't really complain.
  • @dancegurl1118 thanks for the info!!! Guess I'll have to get used to it hs
  • I just want to cry. We changed formulas yesterday because LO was being fussy at the end of feedings and spitting up a lot more then we thought was normal. She was finally though pooping without difficulty. Well she's been doing ok with the change but tonight was screaming bloody murder. I know it takes a bit for them to get used to the change but now I feel just horrible for making a change to her body and possibly making any problems we did have worse. I start back to my last semester of nursing school next week. I can't even imagine being able to pass classes if she remains this way. She's always been a fussy baby and did sleep well up until a few weeks ago when she started grunting and waking up earlier then usual. I'm just at my wits end and want to cry. I went to school today for a quick refresher seminar they had and couldn't believe how little I retained from last semester. So now I'm even more stressed knowing I have to mentally catch myself up again and now do it while being a mom and probably getting little to no sleep.

@jesshrou ugh! So scary! All I was thinking as I ran in there was "please be breathing...please be breathing".

The first time she STTN this was me! I almost made DH go in first to her room, I was so upset. Ugh...
  • Usually I hear LO start to stir at night about 5-10 minutes before she is fully awake and I go into the nursery to start pumping the boob I'm not using for the upcoming feed so that when the feed is over I can just get in bed. It's generally pretty easy bc LO usually wakes up around 130 and then around 445...so my body expects it.

However apparently I'm exhausted tonight...bc I slept through even her actual crying. DH had to wake me as he went to pick her up to change her diaper. Her bassinet is directly next to my side of the bed and I'm usually a very light sleeper. This is what happens when she decides, like yesterday, that 6am is wake up time despite a 10pm bedtime, and then doesn't have long enough naps for mommy to catch up on sleep during the day.

I keep seeing stories about STTN after the 8.5-9.5 week leap...I pray to God that happens to me. I'm struggling here.

I'm really hoping we get that after that leap too. I'm desperate. Our LO was sleeping so well up until a few weeks ago. Now all she does is grunt and thrash around. Plus now she's waking up at like 5am. But I refuse to get out of bed that early so I get her and have her lay next to me until 7, hoping she will figure out to sleep until then. Ugh so tired
  • This is night 4 of bad sleep. LO had been sleeping for 5h the first stretch, but over these last few days has been up about every 2hrs. Tonight, we got him down at 915, only to have DS1 (who is usually an awesome sleeper) up and crying. By the time we got him down and were starting to fall asleep, LO woke up, around 11. He has since been up 1-230, and again now at 4. It doesn't seem to be a "leap" time so maybe a growth spurt? Either way, I was hoping to be more rested before going back to work in 2 days. (:|
  • DH told his mom that LO only wakes up once overnight. The look I gave him was full of scorn. Just because the sun comes up during the second feeding does not exclude it from the night. It is still full ass dark when I go downstairs to make up a bottle. Also, unless he wants to start starting his day at 5am when LO wakes up crying, its still an overnight feed. Any time you want to go back to sleep afterward until a reasonable hour is an overnight feed.

In other news, I'm 0 for 2 this night on waking up before my kid is crying for food. I, like PP, have LO next to me and usually wake up when he starts to stir, with enough time to go pee and make a bottle before he is really awake and begins to cry. Not so tonight (last night, whatever). I know getting up twice overnight doesn't sound all that bad, but once you start subtracting out the time it takes to feed him, time to get him back to sleep and then time to get me back to sleep, it leaves very little sleepy time for mama. Especially since I've been unable to nap now during the day unless DH is home. So I go 2-3 days with no sleep during the day, and very little sleep at night. Ugh... I hate my sleep issues combined with baby. You'd think I'd be so tired already I'd have no problem falling asleep right away, right? [-(

I've had the same experience as @virginiaunicorn11, LO started sucking on her hands around 7-8 weeks, but now during the leap it's almost like a compulsion. Sometimes it's funny/cute, but if it's when she's eating or if she wants to suck on both at the same time/get her whole fist in her mouth, she gets very frustrated and cries, which is frustrating for me. Very ready for her to fully figure the fists out and gain more control over them so they'll stop making her mad!

  • My LO was up at 1230 grr then 230 then 500 where by then I unswaddled her and put her butt on my chest and passed out. It's really starting to annoy me that after the 230 feeding she will sleep good for like an hour but once 4 am comes around she just moves constantly kicking everywhere with her eyes closed and grunting but I can't sleep bc her crib is right next to me in bed. So I'm up for hours ugh and like many of you I get up before she really wakes up to pee and warm her bottle but lately she's been faking me out which leaves me sitting on the couch with a bottle and no baby in my hands! Ugh I'm over it I even tried formula before bed lastnight to make her nice and full but that didn't work. I thought maybe it would bc I did that two weeks ago and she slept 7 hours!! God help us all !
  • @paige0704 topping LO off with formula before she goes down for the night hasn't worked for us either. :(

I know LO is going through a leap right now but I'm so desperate to get rid of one of her MOTN feedings. I've tried feeding her more during her first MOTN feeding but she just falls asleep. She actually barely opens her eyes during that feeding. Ugh.

  • @mellymar is your little one spreading out the daytime feedings at all? We normally eat at 9, 12, 3 or around there and today she spread it over 4 hours each time. And even then she didn't each much and got mad.
