Breastfeeding/Pumping/Formula Feeding Check-In 6/29 to 7/5

I figure not everyone breastfeeds but there may be some feeding concerns we can discuss. Let's use this to continue to offer support, give updates, ask questions and/or offer advice and tips.

1. How old is your LO?

2. Breastfeeding, pumping, formula feeding? A combination of two of all three?

3. Questions, concerns, and/or updates for the group.

Just for fun ... :D

Re: Breastfeeding/Pumping/Formula Feeding Check-In 6/29 to 7/5

  • 3 weeks, breastfeeding and pumping (sometimes) so DH can feed, don't pump more than 2 oz at a time but I'm certain LO gets much more when on the breast..and number 7? At least I could grow it all out being it's pretty much one length lol

    1. Spitty is now 9weeks 4days

    2. Breastfeeding and pumping

    3. For those of you that are pumping to have a freezer stash...
-How are you storing your milk and keeping it organized?
I'm freezing storage bags flat and storing them in shoebox sized plastic containers. But is there a more efficient way I'm not aware of?!
-If you're using storage bags, how much milk are you storing in each bag?
Right now I have anywhere from 2oz to 4oz in each bag. I'm wondering if it's best to store a full feedings worth or in smaller increments that you could just add on to.

    4. Sadly, I would have to go with 1 or 4 because I used to do my hair similar to those styles when I was in junior high.
  • LO is one week as of Sunday.

Breastfeeding but pumping a little here and there to start a freezer stash...I'll probably introduce bottles after the 2 week mark.

DD clearly prefers one Boob to the other. How can I fix this? The preferred Boob is HUGE always so I look really lopsided. That nipple also hurts a lot more. From pumping, I can tell that the preferred Boob lets down and flows faster than the other, so I assume that's why she likes it so much. I'm thinking I'll start pumping from the other Boob more to get its production up? Any advice?

I also have to say 1 or 4 bc I totally did crazy bangs like that in elementary school. I grew up in New Jersey, so big hair was the in style.
  • My little girl is 3 days old. I came over from July moms. She was born via c section at 37 weeks.

Okay so I started out formula feeding. Didn't really want to breast feed.. Didn't with my other two children, and am on medicine for the c section and for depression, started the day she was born. The doctor, pediatricians,
Nurses and lactation consultant all said that the meds I am on won't hurt her... So I started introducing breast with formula.. And working towards more breast then bottle..
I feel horrible and guilty every time she nurses because I feel like I'm getting my baby high...
And then sometimes she nurses great! And other times she will nurse for 20 mins and then start screaming bloody murder and nothing helps... But a bottle.
Am I over feeding her? Under feeding her? Will the meds hurt her? Im taking half of the dose of pain meds they told me to take because I can't stand the fact that she's getting meds.
How do I know if she's eating enough or not over eating... She weighs 6.8 pounds. And eats over 1oz d formula.. If no boob is involved then 2oz bottle, every 3 to 4 hours. If I do both formula and breast in one feeding bottle depends on how well it went.
  • My baby is 5 weeks today.
    I exclusively pump.
My issue is overproduction but don't really know how to decrease it. I know most people would say thats a good problem but our freezer is basically full of milk and sometimes I make up to 3 x as much as she needs. Was looking to donate it but found out the place in my area charges people to buy the donated milk.
    And I guess I would pick 7.
  • 4 weeks tomorrow

EBF and pumping when I go back to work in September. I pump twice a day just to get 4 ounces. The baby eats about every two hours during the day so I don't have time for another feeding, so I pump twice after feedings.

I'll find out today if I should stop eating dairy, which makes me nervous that my entire supply that I've stashed up in the freezer is now worthless.

    2...because it's so fancy. Ha!

What made you think you shouldn't eat dairy? I ask bc yesterday, DD'S stools went from mustard yellow and seedy back to green...I'm reading that may indicate food sensitivity and that dairy is a common one. I've been having milk twice daily all along (though we use lactaid which is lactose-free)...I did have peanut butter sandwiches the past two days so I'm worried it might be that...which would be better than dairy but still not great, especially if that manifests itself as a peanut allergy in DD later on.
  • @delujm0 I thought her rash might be from a dairy sensitivity but the pediatrician said its just normal heinous baby acne and not to worry or change anything. She said only be worried about black white or bloody stool.

  • Piglet is 12 days old.
Breastfeeding and pumping. She's already taken a few bottles without a problem.
We're having major gas issues, but I know it's normal. We're trying gas drops, but if anyone has anything that's worked well, I'd be interested. I should probably do a search...

#6, but only if the glasses come with.

  • 1. How old is your LO?
The ewok is 5 days old

    2. Breastfeeding, pumping, formula feeding? A combination of two of all three?
Breastfeeding only right now. Only 2 days left until I can get a pump covered by insurance! Huzzah!

    3. Questions, concerns, and/or updates for the group.
Ewok is noticeably 'tan', which means that I know we'll be getting the jaundice speech at his appt today. :| Part of it I couldn't control - milk wasn't obviously in until yesterday, tho its possible there was something happening on Saturday and I just wasn't aware (I only noticed they looked bigger on saturday but couldn't hand express any until Sunday). Part of it I probably could have controlled - I'm afraid that by giving him boob pretty much all the time and letting him use it as a 'pacifier' while in the hospital and at home before milk came in, I've started him into the habit of not very productive feedings. He often falls asleep on the boob or stops sucking and will just hold the nipple. I also have a hard time telling when / if he is swallowing. I just started paying attention to timing him during 'active' sucking and trying to keep him awake when on the boob yesterday. Damn lactation consultants and their always 'just give the breast' in response to every question. I have nothing against formula but I *really really* do not want to spend the money on formula.

Just for fun ... I'd choose #8 because I have always wanted really long hair and I can never seem to get it beyond a certain length. Tho I have rocked a do just like #4 when I was in Jr high. Like, the resemblance is pretty uncanny, tho her bangs ARE really high. Also jealous. Good gods, y'all. We used SO much hairspray back then... :))

  • 1. LO is 5 weeks 4 days

    2. Breastfeeding and some pumping to begin a stash for when I return to work

    3. Breastfeeding is going well. He is up almost 3 lbs from his birth weight (5 lbs 5 oz at birth, now 8 lbs). I'm going to start pumping to start a stash. The LC recommended pumping in the morning before his morning feeding since that is when I will have the most milk. She the suggested instead of DH doing a full feeding, have DH bottle feed an ounce then I finish the feeding at the breast so we can save breastmilk. I think it sounds like a good idea. I will start that tomorrow.

    4. Either 1 or 4
  • @esampson1983 our boys almost share a bday I think and I noticed we call our babes similar nicknames. :) plus they weigh about the same too! Twinning!
  • @bethanne09 i pinch the nipple between my fingers and wait for her to open the widest and then shove it in her mouth past the gums (basically still holding the nipple), and if she clamps down I just take out and try again. Sometimes with each suck when she opens I try and shove it in more. That tends to slow her down at the start so she's not clamping in the wrong spot.

@mellymar I wouldn't worry too much about the comfort nursing. It's in their nature. DS1 was a sleepy eater too so I'd try things to wake him during feedings. I'd tickle his feet, lift up his arms and sometimes I'd blow in his face.

I hope his appt went well today.
  • LO is 8 days old.

    Haircut #5 looks more me...hilarious.

Breastfeeding, and since yesterday started pumping during the day so DH can give him a bottle at night. Which works wonderfully for allowing me to get a little sleep.

Seems like LO is going through a growth spurt already. Yesterday and today, suddenly he insists on being constantly on the breast. He wasn't like this before. He's not sleeping that much because he always wants to eat. It's hard on me but the cool thing is, I can see him getting plumper and bigger on a daily basis. His fingers were super skinny when he was born, now they have filled out. His cheeks are plumper. So are his thighs. I get exhausted and start to resent bfing when I can't get away to do anything else, but I remind myself that he's growing fast and that it won't be this way forever.

Weird. I totally responded to this yesterday and the comment is gone now.

Anyway, I had said thank you, I'll try doing some of those, and we are supposed to see a LC in the am

I saw that reply, it really was there. Also, @dancegurl1118 gave me a nice reply on my "hard day" post on another thread, and it disappeared, too.

@BumpAdmin @BumpTara - looks like the software update deleted a bunch of replies on the boards. Not a huge deal, but FYI for your IT folks
  • Think mine got removed too
  • It's happening on several threads

  • I'm about to pass out pumping.
  • those that pump as well as bfeed...are you doing it to 1) store up for when return to work? 2) due to over producing so have to empty to feel better? 3) if #2 answer how do you know you're producing too much for baby's demand? Engorgement?

My boobs are massive and so hard, when I roll over in bed on my side, I leak bc of the pressure.

Not returning to work until end of Sept, was hoping to start pump beg of sept but curious if something I don't know about for doing it early?

    Almost a month
All of the above, I can't seem to make enough milk. Little guy is still slow to gain even with supplementing so I'm stressed. Had latch issues and started taking fenugreek and oats so supply has improved but only on one breast. Trying to relax and close my eyes during feedings, lots of water...
    Any other tips?

  • 1. LO is 4 weeks tomorrow.
    2. EBF, and pumping for return to work.
    3. White nipple?? My left nipple has been white since shortly after he was born, and there is a deep pain that is worse while feeding. I assumed it was a bad latch and would get better. I feel like his latch has improved, but it's not going away. The right side I no longer have any pain. I've googled it, but everything I've read talks about the nipple being white after feeding and returning to normal shortly after. Mine stays white. Any experience with this?

    4. I have to go with #4, because I used to tease the sides of my hair like that back in the day!
  • Lo is 3 days old. Woof I don't even know how to answer this. Breastfeeding was really rough in the hospital. Pretty much every nurse and 2 different LCs spent time with me to help me get my girl to latch. Mostly she just puts the nip in her mouth, sucks twice then bails. I thought I made great progress with the 2nd LC right before getting discharged from the hospital yesterday. that feeding took 90 mins, not cool. I get home and I don't know if it was hormones or lack of sleep but all hell broke loose. Baby was completely not into it, I was dehydrated and no colostrum was coming out and the clock was ticking on how long it had been since we left the hospital and she had eaten. Since I was beginning to stress and cry, DH told me to take a nap and we'd try once I got up. Needless to say, that didn't help. Long story short, after attempting to pump colostrum with no luck, we ended up giving our girl some of the formula sample we had in the house. She downed it and I was happy she was fed and content but obviously I felt terrible needing to go this route only 4 hours home from the hospital. We did the rest of yesterday's feedings with the formula, determined to hydrate me today and give breastfeeding another whirl. I'm curious if anyone had better luck once their milk came in. I'm just kind of hoping she'll do better once she doesn't work so hard for so little fluid. I'm not anti formula, I was just hoping I'd last a little long in my feeble attempts to breastfeed. :-/ Annnnnnnd definitely #1, reminds me of Dj tanner on full house lol
  • @Mommaswizz keep stimulating your breasts! The more you stimulate the more will come in! Keep trying to hand express even if nothing comes out. Don't give up. Those first days without milk and a crap latch SUCK. It will get better.

  • Lo is 4w4d old. Mostly pumping and bfing. I hate it, I hate every minute of it. My dh is super against formula. But the whole experience has been a nightmare. I think my dh doesn't like pumping either because then he had to feed her or warm up a bottle. I've been trying to get lo on the beast more and more the nipple shield helped a ton. But she just stays on the boob forver, I have to lean over her to get her to latch my dh just keeps saying that I need to go to a meeting and it shouldn't be this hard and all these things I should be doing, seriously I just want to cry, im so over it. I fed her for over 1 hour on both breasts felt like I got that let down thingie. She pushed the boob away and then still wanted a bottle after. I know she is getting stuff because I pump too, she gained 1 pound in 10 days well over the normal amount. She's only had formula twice at the hospital and on the first day we came home. I looked into the meetings the next one is on friday. I was hoping to try and get some sleep that day since dh is off. Between lo and dh I just feel like im not good enough and im over it. There is nothing wrong with formula and if it wasn't for the cost I would have switched on day 2. Also lo was fussy all night because she slept all day yesterday, we have a friend in town and are going out again today. I know people say it will get easier but at this point I don't believe them.

I think it was here (either here or the breastfeeding sucks thread) where I said I would update @mvargas12 after speaking with the LC about sleepy baby on the boob. Well, after making sure he is latching right and having some discussion about diet, water intake, etc - She talked about using tricks like @CillyMama and others have suggested (tickling / thumping the feet, tickles under the chin, running fingers up the spine, using skin to skin when bfing, undressing or diaper changing between switching sides to wake him up).

She said that basically they are just low in weight and it makes them tired, but because they are so tired, they want to eat but get tired from the effort of eating. So once they gain traction and turn the corner, the problem solves itself almost.

So she wants me to start feeding him from the breast when he cues (about every hour and 15-30 min) for 10-15 min, then pump directly after for another 15 minutes, then feed what I got from pumping directly to him. Since I can't get a pump until tomorrow, she loaned me one for today and tomorrow until I can pick mine up. She also suspects that the Dr tomorrow is going to recommend supplementing with a little formula - "topping off" and she said if he did not to get discouraged. Once we can get his energy up enough to feed with interest then he likely will perform better at the breast

That's what my pedi told me to do. Minus the formula. Seems to be working. We will find out Friday at LO's weight check.

Thank you for the update! I try to tickle and poke and move LO but once she's out, she's out. Until I try to put her down and she remembers she's still hungry anyway.

Crossing my fingers that your LO gains the energy he needs to BF like a champ quickly. He'll be great!

    Oh! And 2 things:

    1. I'm a week pp and breastfeeding has already gotten significantly better for me. I can't help but think I'm doing it wrong because there's no way it's this easy so quickly

    2. LO doesn't poop everyday which adds to the thought I'm not BFing right. At the hospital they made it seem like she should be pooping every day, which she definitely isn't.

Anyone else's breastfed LO not pooping everyday?
  • I recommend this smoothie. I'm doing numerous things to try to increase supply, but this smoothie is pretty good and it's nutritious.
