For any moms that bottle feed, how much is your LO eating? Mine is 3 weeks old and she eats 4-6 ozs per feeding. Seems like a lot to me...
Holy crap! Lol how much does your LO weigh that makes a difference too. Ours is almost 6 lbs at 4 weeks since she was a preemie but she only eats 2oz, sometimes 3

My DD is 3 weeks today and she nurses usually both sides then has 2 oz of breast milk from a bottle. So around 3 oz.
@Kbchavez23 My LO is also 3 weeks. We formula feed and during the day she eats every 2-3 hours, usually 2-3 oz. At night she (if we're lucky) can go 3-5 hours and will eat about 3 oz. Occasionally she'll eat 4oz or more often. I suspect we just ended a growth spurt so it was a little all over the place, especially in the evenings when she'd cluster feed.
I'm sure there are many variations of "normal" though so maybe your LO is going through a growth also ?

Yeah these feedings seem ridiculous. On Monday she was 8lbs 2.5ozs.

This growth spurt has been going on for over a week now lol

Hey if she's hungry she's hungry. As long as she's giving you wet and dirty diapers and gaining weight and acting fine, then I guess it's just her normal!
My LO is 1 week 2 days and has 2.5 oz pumped milk every 3 hours. We just watch for spit up-- if it's more than just a burps worth he's had too much. My ped said by week 2 he should be getting 20-25 oz a day. Which we are already at.... Little chunk!
So I think I made a mistake in buying a baby scale from a neighbor. I know as an anxious person I should have refrained. Last night I weighed LO, and even know I know it's not as accurate as the dr office, per the scale he has only gained 11.5oz in two weeks. Per kellymom that's normal so I don't know why I freaked out. He doesn't cry (unless it's time to eat) and has great output. I totally doubt myself and am so scared of starving my baby. I think I just want him bigger and he's just long and lean like daddy.
She eats 3 ounces a feeding. I thought she was getting pokey at the breast and being lazy so I would encourage her to stay on for 10 minutes to 15 minutes aside, but after I went to my breast-feeding class today, I realize she's taking an ounce in five minutes from each side so I'm going to try to stop forcing her to stay on for 15 minutes each side if she's getting what she needs in 15 minutes total

@423ang hmmm, that's an idea. I might try that. Even tho just now he didn't even bother to try to suck the boob. Poor guy. Just want to get him stronger
We've been able to sustain weight gain by supplementing with as little as 2-6 oz/day. And we're using Honest brand, which helps me feel a little better.

This is us too. She only does 1 side/feeding & only stays on 10-15 minutes. I was worried it wasn't enough, but when we went to LC last week she fed on both sides about 10 minutes, but she ate 3oz (@ 1week 4days old). So the LC said she was fine as long as we didn't notice problems from less hind milk. & she's gaining like crazy.
My LO is eating 4oz every 3-4 hours. He was 6lbs 13oz at birth, and at a week old he was 7lbs 1oz. He has his one month check up on July 9th, so I'm anxious to see what he weighs now. I think the reason he eats so much during the day is because he is sleeping 6-7 hours at night.
Hmm, after reading these I'm worried I'm not feeding my baby enough. She was 7lbs at her 2 week appointment a couple weeks ago (I don't know how much she currently weighs). We are feeding 2.5 ounces, usually every 3 hours. We feed her whenever she's hungry, but maybe it's time to increase it to 3 ounces.
@aliciac2008 don't worry! She's just 4 weeks now and took 3oz. The past weeks she was taking 2-2.5. And some meals babies eat more some they eat less. If LO seems content don't worry about it! It's normal to eat 2-4oz but most don't know who aren't formula feeding

Yeah as I am reading these ibam wondering if my little guy is trying to be fed too much. He is only a week old but they ped has us trying to offer 2 ounces. We are trying to get a good gain in weight tho, so maybe that's why we're offering so much. LO only rarely takes it all, and the ped knows that, but its still kinda weird to see you guys with 3 and 4 week olds feeding just half an ounce more than I am supposed to offer my one week old
Currently I am EPing because my son is in the CVICU after his heart surgery and while they just started feeding him my breast milk they won't let him try to nurse yet. I have been on a schedule of pumping every three hours and am 1 week PP. every time I pump I still only pump 3-4 oz total. Ive read and been told that baby will nurse more than I'm able to get out with a pump I just really want to be able to provide enough for him and don't want to have to supplement formula. Im hoping when I have the chance to nurse that he gets more than I've been able to with a pump.
My LO is 2 weeks old. Since he was born he would latch and nurse and always fall asleep. I keep having to massage my breast when I feed him. Anyone else having to do the same thing?

I have to do that, and more. His always falling asleep on the boob set me up for very poor supply, so now I have to pump and supplement with formula, too. Mine is only 1 week old, tho, so if you made it to 2 weeks without having to do all that, then you're doing better than I am
rachelkaylene - sounds like you're doing great with just a pump and hope your LO gets to go home with you soon. Most babies take about 24 oz of breast milk in a 24 hour period. So if you're getting at least 3 oz 8 times a day from pumping you're doing great!

Agreed, you are doing excellent with the pump to see these amounts. I'd also add for those that are questioning amounts the breastfeed babies don't necessarily dramatically increase their intake volume over time. When they are older they might take 4-5 ounces per feeding but they only feed 5-6 times a day, whereas as young babies they might intake 2-2.5 ounces but feed 10-12 times a day. The total volume may increase a little bit but not dramatically. This is is why BF babies usually don't ever need to step up to larger bottles. Kellymom.com is a great resource to learn more about this.
@mellymar you've got an amazing commitment to BF'ing, lady! I know I've already commented on this, but it's worth repeating, as I think it every time you posts here. I really admire you for all you are doing to provide breast milk for Master P. I know it's tough, and it's a drag. Hang in there, lady! Sounds like you've started to get answers and are now working to calibrate the solution. Go girl, you got this!

This may be a dumb question, and if so, I apologize, but can we use mosquito spray on ourselves while BFing? I have not used it just for concerns of any toxins getting to LO but didn't know if any of you knew. I have the net for LO's stroller which is effective for him, but I am vulnerable when we go on walks...TIA!
So thankful for my malls "family lounge" with nursing cubbies. Not that I care about nursing in public and would've done it while buying my bedroom set at Macy's but it's nice to relax.

My LO is 4 days old now and I'm breastfeeding. My milk came in the day after she was born. I'm having major issues with engorgement. She nurses for about 10 minutes each feeding every 2 hours some times for 5 every 1 or so. I've read where I shouldn't pump because it can make the engorgement worse but I also read that my supply can get messed up if I don't empty my breasts. I have also tried every thing for relief but they are so big and hard still. Help anyone!
@crroberts08 I wish I could help but I'm struggling with the opposite problem. I do seem to remember some of the other mamas talking about using a warm washcloth to help 'loosen' things up before using some hand expression to get some milk out so the LO is not trying to feed from a firm balloon of boob. I've also been checking out both kellymom and the LA leche league websites for help with my supply issue and found good info there, I would think they would have equally good resources for you as well. Good luck, gal!
For me, today I had an awesome bfing session with Master P. He went to the boob and was being pretty engaged there for most of his 10 min guideline, so much so that we went over by a couple of minutes until he relaxed and let go of the boob. Then he did basically the same on the other side, which I consider 'bad boob' (it does noticeably poorer when pumping on that side). Then he wanted more so i switched back to starting side and did almost another another 10 min! In addition, afterwards when i pumped i got the same amount i usually get (which is pretty paltry, maybe 1/4 to 1/2 an ounce) but I'm hoping his engagement while on the boobs during his feeding prior to pumping meant he was getting what he was looking for while at the bar. Also the ped today gave me the OK to start his feeding session 3 hours after finishing. I had been starting it 2 hours after finishing since it takes pretty much a whole hour. So now I get about 2 hours sleep in between sessions instead of one and I'm much better rested. Its a rollercoaster with ups and downs, but this afternoon is good stuff.

I used a hand pump to relieve some of the pressure but didn't pump until they were empty. The LC told me to use a cold compress if they were uncomfortable, not heat since engorgement is part inflammation. It's uncomfortable but should only last a few days. Hang in there!
@crroberts08 I had a lactation consultant come to the house. I couldn't get my LO to latch because of my engorgement. My milk had just come in. I'm only 6 days PP. I was told to pump after my first feed of the day to soften my breasts for the day and again in the afternoon or evening if needed. If I go over 4 hours I start to get engorged again. I use heat before a feeding and ice after to reduce swelling. I use the frozen pads across my boobs over the nipple pad. Feels pretty good on the nips. But I'm just starting off myself.
QUESTION: for those BF, do you feed on both sides each time and how long do you feed for? My consultant wants me to feed 20 mins on each boob with burping every 10 mins. Sometimes I can't get LO to wake up to feed after 20-30 minutes so I just let her go back to sleep. My LO will be a week tomorrow and she is barely awake for most feedings, so that might be why she wants me to time right now.
@elizab14 I feed both sides. I do 10 minutes (ish) on the first side, burp and then let her go how many minutes she needs on the other side (usually 6-10 minutes) I've always done both sides, I just feel more comfortable with it and she has a bad habit of falling asleep while feeding so I switch sides to wake her up and so that she can get a strong flow from the let down on that side.

@HayesRN13 that is like all I do. The thought of going to like a family thing is inconceivable right now. I am not comfortable pumping in front of people. The day's fly by
I feed both sides every time if possible. Each side takes 15-30 min depending on LO'S mood. I burp in between sides and if I can tell she has a gas bubble. I change her diaper in between sides so she's good and angry when we switch sides. If I don't change her, she falls asleep after 1 side and won't take the other. I alternate which side I start with each time as well.
@esampson1983 I've been using honest brand bug spray, which is basically all natural essential oils. I used it during pregnancy and honestly never considered if it could be a problem. I love their products because I feel like I don't have to worry. I personally would not use any bug sprays with DEET or other poisons, but I try not to use those anyway.
My babe will be 2 weeks on Monday. He eats for soooo long at the boob 1/2 hr to hour. And when I say long I don't mean lazy.... He is gulping and swallowing..... I pump a few times a day. Tonight he ate at the breast for a half hour then took 3 1/2 oz of pumped. Never puked. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to keep up with this milk wise. My nipples hurt like a burning fire. @HayesRN13 My whole life is feeding as well. I love being able to provide for him but I never get a break. If we do go somewhere I'm always worried he will get hungry and I always bring pumped milk because I'm weird about my boobs in public. I don't want to supplement but honestly want to for a break. I know the research about it changing the gut though ...

At 4.5 weeks she is averaging 3-4 oz a feeding, every 3 hours or so. I've been poorly tracking but it seems to be about 24 oz a day total.
