I'm in tears reading these. Names amaze me. All I will say is I'm starting to think the naming of a child is gonna be the hardest part of parenthood. Lol
Working in a pediatric office I have seen many "odd" names and myself and other nurses find ourselves having to Google how to pronounce a kids name... seriously? Ain't no body got time for that. I also triage calls and just had a mom call in for her son who's name is Ocean... *face palm* poor kid.
Ok maybe this an UO, I think Ocean is nice name. But probably better as a girl's name. DS's name is River so maybe that's why I like the name Ocean. :-/
I don't really understand what is so bad about the name Braiden. Back in 1997, when I named my son, Braiden, it was very uncommon. I still love the name of course and it suits my handsome 17 year old perfectly.
I think moms (and dads) should be able to name their vagina trophies whatever they please. I get sick of seeing the same boring names. But that's just my opinion.
I also hate parents who give their kids names that are impossible to live up to. If Will and Kate had named their child "Diana" as a first name, that would have been absolutely cruel and unacceptable. Asking the granddaughter of Diana to shoulder her name? No. Extend that further. A girl i knew years ago, last name Frank, was named "Anne" by her parents. On purpose.
Just no. That's really not ok.
I myself was named after my missing elder sister. I get what my parents were trying to do and i'm sure turning me into an episode of the ultimate middle child smackdown was not consciously on their minds.. but it should have been.
@keiragann not sure how I feel about it, the kid part of me is going AWESOMEEEE!! the adult part of me is going are u trying to make your child hate you??? I have a friend who's sons name is Damien Pious, love my best friend but naming your child a lovely amount of opposition wouldn't work for many people besides her. Her child is well adjusted and a vegan by choice(mind you he's never in his life ever let his mom feed him meat or animal products, she finally just gave up trying) so yeah he was set up from day 1 to be the strange one.
I'm gonna name my child whatever weird wacky or wonderful name I see fit weather it be unique or traditional and I won't care what anyone else thinks of it because it's mine and my husbands choice not the choice of society and while 1 name may be hated by 1 person it may be loved by millions of others so as long as I and my partner like the name we choose who cares what anyone in this world thinks
I have a unique name. However, IMHO it is beautiful! I never once heard anybody say anything other then "Wow! Your name is so beautiful!" Actually, I hear this at least once a day. I definitely lucked out! Good job mom:-)
I was a preemie and my unique name did not fit a 4lb LO. So for my entire childhood, everybody called me Jodi... I had to struggle and fight to get people to finally call me by my real name. DH uses my real name exclusively but some of my oldest friends call me Jodi which is fine too... As long as they don't introduce me to anybody by my nickname.
So my funny story… And it is not racist at all because the woman that said it was Caucasian so everybody stop before you start with the racism. My friend was in Target buying a whole bunch of things for her dorm room back in college. While being rung out, the clerk said to her, "You must really like target!" So my friend said to her, "I absolutely adore Tarjeé." (pronouncing target as if it was French.) And the woman said to her, "Tarjeé. Where did you get that name Tarjeé? I am going to name my next child Tarjeé!"

I love your name! It is pretty!!!
And we pronounce Target as Tarjee' as well, really. But my family is French so it's a joke, but my grandparents don't get the joke lol. My grandparents also pronounce Detroit as "Day-twa". Wouldn't name my children any of those things though.
I have to admit, there is one normal, upstanding, perfectly beautiful name that i absolutely despise. Robert. It sounds like a belch. I know it's a beautiful name and any kid would be lucky to get such a fine name. I just hate it more than almost any other name.

This might belong in the UO thread as well and I'm sorry if I offend anyone, but personally I hate when people ruin nice names with dumb "unique" spelling. Like putting X's to replace CK (ex. Jaxson) or Jayceson instead of Jason. It's becoming way too much of a trend these days for my liking.
I totally agree with the dumb spelling thing but Jaxon is actually a traditional English spelling of the name meaning "God be gracious". Just thought I'd let you know
Good to know! Still not my favorite spelling but to each their own I do know someone whose child is Jaxson and I know they were trying to be creative, definitely not in their heritage lol. If there's legit reasons for a different spelling that's totally different! Just was the first example I thought of.

I hate 'unique' spellings. Don't do that to your kid.
Im a teacher so I get to hear fun names often. I have a student whose first name is Danquail. I always think of the politician. We also have twins at the school. One is named Marcus, which isn't bad. It's the fact that his brother's name is DaMarcus that kills me. And we have a kindergartener named Tequila. No joke.
The YOU nique spellings are what get me. One of the students on my class is Qathryn. It took me close to two weeks before I felt comfortable calling her by anything other than her last name.

My friend just told me she is closing the middle name danger for her son so he can say his middle name is danger.
I have a friend who has a son and is currently pregnant with her second son... First sons name is Maximus Awesome and her second son will be name Alexander Amazing. I also knew a little boy who's middle name was Danger. Haha

So my BFF who is pregnant and due in October… Her husband's last name is Walker. I'm trying to convince her to name her son Johnny but she's not going for it... I still think it would be badass!!! Luke Sky would also be awful!!!
Back when hubby and I were still dating and I was still underage (and marriage and babies seemed a lifetime away) I may or may not have signed a contract agreeing to give our first son the middle name Danger in exchange for him to buy me a bottle of wine. I refuse to actually sign off on that but can't believe I agreed to that for alcohol and now it's actually been brought up lmao woops
A kid in my sons class...his name is anakin sky walker. I love unusual names. All of my children but one have very odd names. Everyone told me how they would hate me blah blah blah but kids in their classes love their names and my kids can spell them just fine. I think the creativity is awesome. I can't stand seeing so many of the same names everywhere. Sooooo boooring to me. We are individuals. Why not have individual names?? And i wont be announcing this babys name until after it is on the birth cert. Lol i don't care what people think...but when i am hormonal i just want to throat punch boring people when they say the same tired shit about names.
DH went to school with a guy named "Shaheed," but it was actually spelled Shithead... Poor kid! He wasn't from the US and it was just lost in translation :-(
