*~*~* ftm & btdtm play date! 02/20/15 *~*~*

Welcome to the First Time Mothers (FTM) & Been There Done That Mothers (BTDTM) Play Date!

This is a thread for the FTM's in our PAIF community.  Check-ins will be posted every other Thursday (or possibly Fridays - I'm thinking Fridays are better for me - any objections?).  On alternating Thursdays (or Fridays), I'll post a FT & BTDT moms' "Play Date" thread - in which we inexperienced first timers ask for advice and feedback from the more experienced ladies in our communities.

QOTW: Dream vacations - I'm getting sick of looking at these four walls,   but I also know that having kids will force us to change the way we vacation for a few years.  FTMs what's your dream vacation with and without kids?

**Play Date Note** , Once again, I did *not* gather FTM questions in advance (sorry about that) - so, we're gonna wing it. :D In an effort to keep the first post shorter, I've moved the FTM list to a subsequent post(s).

Please respect our BTDT contributors & avoid duplicate questions. What to know what was already answered?  Check out the links to previous Play Date threads:

Ok, I probably have the most specific/stupid question ever...but it's really driving me crazy as I finish up the nursery.  If anyone can answer great - bonus points if you cloth diaper.

I'm going to cloth diaper but still do disposable at night.  Someone gave me a genie diaper pail, which is great.  But I still need something for the cloth diapers...then I need something for regular laundry...and I'm wondering if I'd need yet another pail for regular trash like wipes.  I would end up with 4 containers, which seems like a lot.  Is that normal??  Can I just put all trash in the diaper genie?  Or if I'm only doing disposable at night, do you think I can wing it, return the diaper genie, and get a good diaper pail that can more easily double as trash?

Basically, my question is more about how you arranged the changing table area and all the trash/laundry options.

As for QTOW - dream vacation would be to go to Spain.  My mom got really into ancestry.com and tracked down the small towns our family came from when they moved to Puerto Rico.  One side is from the north coast and the other is from the Mediterranean.  I would love to rent a car and go all over, drink wine, and see the small towns.

Since I'm now scanning 3x/day, and Thursdays are also an u/s day for me, its been hard for me to put aside the big chunk of time needed to get this post going on a Thursday, so how about Friday?  I also think I'm suffering from post leader fatigues, so I'm gonna go ahead and put the feelers out for a replacement for this check in.  (Plus, I have less than 4 weeks to go until a scheduled c/s, so its gonna be time to move on soon anyway).

    Question for BTDT moms:
Cloth diapering - has anyone had any success finding a daycare that would accept cloth diapers?  Are you a prefold or AIO gal, or is it feasible to do a combo of both?

    QOTW:
I have always wanted to visit Turkey, specifically Istanbul, but its just never happened for me. There's a lot of great art an architecture there - It was the capitol of the Roman Empire for a while, at least of the Eastern half.  But, I fear that a long airplane trip's not really in the cards for someone with young twins.  My family dream vacations involve visiting as many U.S. National Parks as we can - starting with the closer ones, and eventually getting out to Yosemite, Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon.  I blame Ken Burns and his specials. I can't wait to take my kids to Volcanoes NP, but I can totally wait to take them on a 10 hour flight - so that won't be for quite a while.

HI ladies! Thanks for the check in @AMShark!

No questions from me this week.

QOTW: Dream vacations - I'm getting sick of looking at these four walls,   but I also know that having kids will force us to change the way we vacation for a few years.  FTMs what's your dream vacation with and without kids?
DH and I really want to visit Italy. Ideally, we'd spend a few weeks over there traveling around different areas of the country; we want to see the Amalfi coast, Rome, Tuscany, Verona, Venice, and Florence. As far as family vacations go, I want to take the kids to Disney and do a Disney cruise with them (when they're older). My grandparents live in FL, and we'd go to Disney every time we visited them and its one of my fondest childhood memories. The Disney cruises are highly rated and seem like a fun, inexpensive way to travel the Caribbean as a family.

@gsancho - I love Spain,  We vacationed there 2 or 3 years ago starting in Barcelona, and then taking the train to Madrid, and then Malaga on the Costa del Sol.  Every location was so different and amazing.  We also ate and drank our faces off, so you have that to look forward too.
Interestingly enough, my mom is also very much into ancestry.com right now, and she's tracing her family from Puerto Rico back to Spain too.  Most of what she's found is near Barcelona, and the Southern coast, but bigger cities, so we're probably not related.  ;)

Oh, I have another BTDTm question too:

BTDT C-section Mom's:  Did you buy any special type of support belt or undergarments to wear after your procedure?  Any recommendations?

Hi ladies! Thanks for the check in @AMShark‌

My question is what things do I need to have on hand for the medicine cabinet that's baby specific other than a thermometer and infant acetaminophen?

QOTW: cinque terre! Been to other cities/areas in Italy but always wanted to go there! It looks so gorgeous! Oh and with kids probably a Caribbean cruise... they just make a lot of sense and you can still see neat places.

Cloth diapers-we have a 10 gallon trash can with a kid that we put a Pail liner in and put the dirty diapers in.

Then we have another 10 gallon pail we use for trash like disposable wipes etc.
in the bottom of both cans are the arm and hammer baking soda things and citrus discs.

I say take the diaper genie back it's a pita to use. And many ppl I know have cut themselves trying to put the ring bag replacer back in.

What my mother does is takes plastic grocery bags and puts disposables in them and then throws them away if it's a bowel movement. If it's pee it just goes in the regular trash.

I love cotton prefolds from green mountain, fitted diapers from kissaluvs and pockets from fuzzibunz BC LO is petite. I am not a fan of aio because I find that they stink if you don't turn them inside out and I prefer cotton. My fav covers are thirsties duo wrap.

Daycare- there are several day cares that will do cloth, they usually want only pockets, my friend however has one that does prefolds.

C Section-I got an abdominal binder from the hosp the morning after it was amazing then 2 weeks after got a smaller abdominal binder from my women's physical therapist which I wore for another month. I highly rec women's pt for all women no matter how you deliver. Scar mobilization is key for c sections to make sure you have no future problems.

Medicine cabinet- baby clippers the ones cvs sells are awesome, infant ibprofen, waxelene its so much better than petroleum jelly for rashes, using the thermometer, dry skin etc, q tips, baby size band aids.

Mattresses- it does matter! Naturpedic is the only true organic mattress, the one sealy sells is false advertising, Bambi baby has sales and coupons, also amazon. We have the inner spring one it's amazing! If you cannot afford it the next best thing is to let whatever mattress you get breath for several weeks then put an organic mattress cover on it, one that zips.

    Congratulations @runawaylaurel !!!!  I've moved you to the graduates list.  <:-P <:-P <:-P
Can I book you as my travel agent for the future?  It sounds like you know how to travel.

@jessimi06 - We vacationed in Italy the year before Spain, and we went to Venice, Rome and Sorrento - with quick stops in Pisa, Assisi and Pompeii.  Once again, we ate and drank our faces off (that might be a pattern for us).  It's such a beautiful country.

Last year, with all of the IVF cycles and craziness, we just drove to a bed and breakfast down the shore, in Cape May, NJ.  We booked a little cottage at the same place this summer, thinking we'll be able to handle it all with packn'play living room set up. Perhaps we're crazy.  I hope not.  Anywho,  we'll be logging more road miles than frequent flyer miles for a couple of years I suppose. That's alright - there are plenty of places I'd like to drive to also.

I went to Istanbul when I was 16w pregnant with #1. It was amazing! I really loved it.

We cloth diaper. I finally gave up overnight cloth because of rash problems. She would pee early on, then sit in it all night and we just couldn't get a hold on the rash.

For cloth diapers I have a zippered wet bag that holds about two days worth of diapers.

We use cloth wipes (actually cut up cotton shirts and baby wash cloths since we got several dozen as gifts). Cloth wipes go in the wet bag.

Because we are talking one overnight disposable diaper, we take it along with any disposable wipes directly to the big trash each morning.

I personally found through trial and error that pockets are my favorite. For sitter, DH and my parents it was as easy as a disposable. I also found the AIO leaked a ton as J got older.

For the medicine cabinet...I'm not a planner, DH was dispatched to the drugstore when we needed anything.

Reading about all these dream vacations makes me want one. Mine was Ireland, but we did that a before DS1, so now maybe Australia.

C-sections: Mine was not planned and I didn't know anything about the support belts or wraps. I was ok, although rather sore. I'm sure one would help. I'm scheduled for a RCS and may look into one.

Medicine cabinet: diaper lotion (I liked Boudreaux's Butt Paste), nail clippers, saline spray, nasal aspirator (take the one from the hospital. They work best.), orajel, lotion, Q-tips and if you have a boy who you circumcise you'll need Vaseline and guaze pads for when you get home until it heals.

Mattress: ours was not organic and did not smell like chemicals. I like the idea of the organic cover though.

@AMShark‌ I'm sure it'll work out. We did quite a bit of pack n play traveling and it went smoothly. Granted, we only had one, but I know you can handle it!

Diapers: We use disposables, so no insight on CD questions. But, we do keep the diaper genie in our laundry room (it's upstairs next to the boys' room). Dirty diapers x2 in a door with a closed room. Woah. We put the daytime ones in the outside trash immediately.

C/S: I got my OB to write a script for an abdominal binder in the hospital (they kept them on the floor- just needed a script). It helped sooooo much with walking. I didn't need it when sitting, but it made that awful tugging whole standing feeling so much better.

Medicine Cabinet: dye free Tylenol (my boys only like cherry flavored), rectal thermometer, nose Frida, q-tips, Vaseline, nail clippers (go on amazon and read reviews. A lot of them are junk). You can get infant Motrin, but you can't use it for six months. You can also get some infant vitamin d drops (which are recommended for BFing infants at a certain point).

    Hi ladies :)

    1. Organic mattress question -- Yes, they do make a difference and are worth it. Ditto iluvboston re Naturepedic. We also have the inner coil spring version. And for two mini cribs, I purchased the Naturpedic organic mattresses of smaller size. You want to watch for toxic chemicals used in the foam, other fillers and the exterior material. The smell of non-organic mattresses can indicate that the products used include harsh and/or toxic chemicals. Over time, for example, the inner materials can break down and aerosolize so baby can breathe in the fine particles. Naturepedic mattresses do not have flame retardants, which are of concern to me. Naturepedic uses other means of ensuring safety. For similar reasons, I've spent a good deal of time researching safe infant car seats and strollers, from the chemical exposure perspective.

    2. Belly binders post csection -- My first child was born via csection after a long, miserable failed induction. I was not prepared for a csection, so I didn't have anything special with me. The hospital gave me a binder to wear which was a godsend. It makes moving around more comfortable. I'm having a RCS and plan to use the binder provided by the hospital again. It is a 9" DeRoyal hospital-grade abdominal binder. You can get them on Amazon.

    3. Medicine cabinet -- You don't need much to start. You already mentioned infant's tylenol. At some point, you'll want to have corn starch around which helps with wet burns baby sometimes gets on the neck from nursing or the bottle. Baking soda for baths when baby has a rash. PiYo baby nail clippers. Aquaphor. Nose Frieda. Our pediatrician discourages taking baby's temperature rectally, so we purchased an infrared thermometer instead. Dove sensitive bar soap, thr only soap our pediatric dermatologist said is ok to use on a newborn (and then he said to stick with water only and use soap only if there is a big blowout). As for Orajel and other topical analgesics for mouth pain, you might want to research the use of benzocaine products in children under 2 and decide whether you are ok using such products. Our pediatrician said no benzocaine topicals. Orajel even mentions with FDA warning on their website.

@AmCheri‌ Would you mind sharing your pedi's advice about the rectal thermometer? The boys' pedi always had us backup any other thermometer with a rectal reading for accuracy (which was good when the temporal gave me a reading of 100, while the rectal gave me a reading of 104.3). They used rectal measurements to a certain age at appts as well. We can use ear thermometers now, but I'm wondering for the new baby. TIA!

@Ruthie04, of course! At our first appointment with our daughter, they went through the usual new parent stuff. As for taking temps, rectal methods were discouraged because they have had many parents do it improperly and cause injury. I'm sure this is the exception and not the rule. If you are comfortable taking a rectal temp, I see no reason not to do it that way. We just decided to go the easy route with the no-touch infrared thermometer (touch versions work too but you do need proper technique). We tried axilary for a while, but our baby was too darned squirmy to get a good reading. So, the suggestion to avoid rectal methods had nothing to do with an accuracy issue, just user error which could cause injury. I think our pedi is just being conservative about it, perhaps even overly so.

@justone13, sure thing. So here is why we went down this road. First, I hope I don't come off as sounding like a paranoid parent or extreme about "natural" products. I'm really not, it's just that since having a baby, I've become more aware about what we put in our bodies and what we are exposed to. I first started with BPA and pthalate in plastics and tried to limit our daughter's exposure to that junk. Then when she was ready for cow's milk, I looked into the whole organic v. Non-organic v. Milk from cows treated with antibiotics for sickness but not given hormones, etc. So much to learn!

Ok, so car seats. We used Orbit with our daughter because the products were advertised as being free of toxic flame retardants. However, a recent Duke University study showed that this isn't quite true. So began my search for a safer, toxic flame-retardant free infant car seat, which led us to the Nuna Pippa. The Pippa car seat is rated high for safety in crash tests and is one of the safest alternatives from a chemical perspective. It works with Maxi Cosi seat adapters and Nuna itself makes a lot of adapters for many different strollers. There is a website I can suggest with reviews of many brands for safety if you'd like more information.

@AmCheri‌ thank you!! I read it starts with the egg after my third failed ivf cycle. My eggs were crap. So when I made all the changes you talk of (plus more) they improved dramatically which finally resulted in the 4th cycle working with my FET. So my house is pretty much chemical free now because I just kept going with all of it. I try very hard to not use canned goods or plastic. Id love to have the website if you have it. Thank you for answering back!

You should join the environmental working group website and get the skin deep app. Also I don't use paper towels unless we are cleaning the bathroom, it's changed my life! @Justone13‌, the organic baby university websit has a three-part post on the use of certain toxic chemicals in strollers and car seats. The post started in 2011 but in many cases information on certain brands has been updated recently. I think it's impossible to eliminate everythung that is questionable (even BPA-free plastics are not without debate and some level of uncertainty), but you do the best you can. The info is not comprehensive and the point should be made that sometimes even within the same brand different chemicals might be used. Use the info as a good starting point for follow-up product research.

    https://organicbabyuniversity.com/blog/2011/07/toxic-flame-retardants-in-your-home-strollers-part-1/

I also look at products available through a store called Spr.out Sa.n Fran.cisco and I've contacted the store for help in locating safer baby products. We have a store near us and so I've ordered big items, like furniture, through SSF. The employees are knowledgable and really do care about the products they offer and recommend.

@pblge‌, Our mattress also has the waterproof cover, and we do not use a mattress pad. Does not seem at all necessary. We always put the sheet directly on top; never had any issues. (Side note: The salesperson at Sprout where we purchased from steered us away from the non-waterproof models because they are less practical. Even with a pad, imagine getting yuck on that nice mattress!)

Thanks @amcheri! I always checked with the temporal first and followed up with a rectal reading, so I've probably only ever done a handful of rectal temps between the two boys. But, ouch! Poor babies with injuries on their bottoms!! The boys never even flinched when I did it, so we never saw any issues. Thanks for clarifying!

@gsancho We have 3 containers, so 4 isn't a stretch.  We have a mini trash can, our munchkin diaper pail, and a large trash can with a diaper liner for laundry!  A friend gave me a tip to use diaper liner in trash can for laundry, can take the bag out and downstairs, it's washable, and keeps poopy/pee/puky clothes smells in!  We have all three in a corner next to our dresser with changing pad on it.  My LO is 7 weeks old and this system is working great. Planet Wise Liner

@turquoisequeen We have tylenol which we haven't needed, my LO is only 7 weeks old.  So far we used gas drops and learned that because we are exclusively breastfeeding we need to give her Vitamin D drops (wish I knew this ahead of time, running to store not easy immediately postpartum).  Vitamin D comes in two forms, the type that you give 1ml in a syringe or 1 drop that can go on your nipple or pacifier (recommend the 1 drop kind!).  https://www.cdc.gov/breastfeeding/recommendations/vitamin_d.htm

    @1220winterbride

My little one isn't even that old yet, but she is 7 weeks and I can tell you what has helped us survive until now! lol I'll add stuff different from @luvboston

    1) Breastfeeding stuff, if you plan to.  Hands free pumping bra!  Savior.  Nipple cream, disposable and non-disposable nursing pads, a couple packs of soothies (to soothe boobs/not the pacifier), at least 4 nursing bras, luna lullaby nursing pillow, medela steam and clean bags, baby dish detergent, first years breastflow milk storage container/works great with breastmilk bags, Vitamin D drops.
    2) Baby swing (sometimes baby gets super fussy and this is the only thing to quiet her down!)
    3) Pack n' play (we have sleeping in the bassinet portion in our room, really makes it easier with breastfeeding, weight limit is 15 pounds so she'll be kicked back to her room in a month or so)
    4) Comfy changing pad (we have ours on a dresser)
    5) Baby bouncer
    6) Baby Gym
    7) Boba wrap (great for getting things done around the house when baby wants to be held)
    8) She mentioned blankets (gotta say we love our Aden Anais swaddle blankets and have like 12 of them, they get spit up on etc.)
    9) Baby monitor with two cameras!  Great for two story house, have one camera in her room/one in living room.
    10) Good diaper bag

Everything on this list plus the list above is pretty much gets us through our days.

No problem.  To help build my basic registry, I used the blog Lucie's List.  It was helpful to get me started, then I just asked my mom friends for advice :)  If you do an amazon registry you can add an advice team and I did that.  Friends can add their favorite products, then it is really easy to add those things onto your registry.

@turquoisequeen I bought mine near the end of pregnancy, probably about a week before I went into labor.  I bought the stretchy super comfy kind, no underwire, comes in S, M, L, XL size from maternity store (so has some flexibility).  Definitely get some ahead of time.  You won't feel like going to a store postpartum (I did not anticipate how much pain I'd be in after, had 2nd degree tear from a 9 pound + cutie pie, and was on pain meds until week 6). It is also hard to escape when exclusively breastfeeding (since you are source of food, have about 1.5 hour-2 hour windows to escape between feeds).  Also because I had a baby during flu/cold season/and it's negative degrees outside, I don't plan on taking baby places until after she gets some vaccinations at 8 weeks.  So hubby and I do shopping alone these days while one of us stays home with her.  Get as much done as possible while your little one is still inside :)  Sorry for long post lol
