This is a thread for the FTM's in our PAIF community. Check-ins will be posted every other Thursday (or possibly Fridays - I'm thinking Fridays are better for me - any objections?). On alternating Thursdays (or Fridays), I'll post a FT & BTDT moms' "Play Date" thread - in which we inexperienced first timers ask for advice and feedback from the more experienced ladies in our communities.
QOTW: Dream vacations - I'm getting sick of looking at these four walls, but I also know that having kids will force us to change the way we vacation for a few years. FTMs what's your dream vacation with and without kids?
**Play Date Note** , Once again, I did *not* gather FTM questions in advance (sorry about that) - so, we're gonna wing it. In an effort to keep the first post shorter, I've moved the FTM list to a subsequent post(s).
Please respect our BTDT contributors & avoid duplicate questions. What to know what was already answered? Check out the links to previous Play Date threads:2013 summary: Diagnosed with Hypothyroid; Cervical polyp removed (benign);

QOTW: Dream vacations - I'm getting sick of looking at these four walls, but I also know that having kids will force us to change the way we vacation for a few years. FTMs what's your dream vacation with and without kids?
DH and I really want to visit Italy. Ideally, we'd spend a few weeks over there traveling around different areas of the country; we want to see the Amalfi coast, Rome, Tuscany, Verona, Venice, and Florence. As far as family vacations go, I want to take the kids to Disney and do a Disney cruise with them (when they're older). My grandparents live in FL, and we'd go to Disney every time we visited them and its one of my fondest childhood memories. The Disney cruises are highly rated and seem like a fun, inexpensive way to travel the Caribbean as a family.
ALL WELCOME!

Organic matteress. Yes? No? Is the smell that different? I've heard horror stories of normal matteress smelling like chemicals. I read the organic ones are better? Thoughts?
QOTW: India. I really want to go to a holi festival.
My question is what things do I need to have on hand for the medicine cabinet that's baby specific other than a thermometer and infant acetaminophen?
QOTW: cinque terre! Been to other cities/areas in Italy but always wanted to go there! It looks so gorgeous! Oh and with kids probably a Caribbean cruise... they just make a lot of sense and you can still see neat places.
**Signature Warning**
Then we have another 10 gallon pail we use for trash like disposable wipes etc.
in the bottom of both cans are the arm and hammer baking soda things and citrus discs.
I say take the diaper genie back it's a pita to use. And many ppl I know have cut themselves trying to put the ring bag replacer back in.
What my mother does is takes plastic grocery bags and puts disposables in them and then throws them away if it's a bowel movement. If it's pee it just goes in the regular trash.
I love cotton prefolds from green mountain, fitted diapers from kissaluvs and pockets from fuzzibunz BC LO is petite. I am not a fan of aio because I find that they stink if you don't turn them inside out and I prefer cotton. My fav covers are thirsties duo wrap.
Daycare- there are several day cares that will do cloth, they usually want only pockets, my friend however has one that does prefolds.
C Section-I got an abdominal binder from the hosp the morning after it was amazing then 2 weeks after got a smaller abdominal binder from my women's physical therapist which I wore for another month. I highly rec women's pt for all women no matter how you deliver. Scar mobilization is key for c sections to make sure you have no future problems.
Medicine cabinet- baby clippers the ones cvs sells are awesome, infant ibprofen, waxelene its so much better than petroleum jelly for rashes, using the thermometer, dry skin etc, q tips, baby size band aids.
Mattresses- it does matter! Naturpedic is the only true organic mattress, the one sealy sells is false advertising, Bambi baby has sales and coupons, also amazon. We have the inner spring one it's amazing! If you cannot afford it the next best thing is to let whatever mattress you get breath for several weeks then put an organic mattress cover on it, one that zips.

C-sections: Mine was not planned and I didn't know anything about the support belts or wraps. I was ok, although rather sore. I'm sure one would help. I'm scheduled for a RCS and may look into one.
Medicine cabinet: diaper lotion (I liked Boudreaux's Butt Paste), nail clippers, saline spray, nasal aspirator (take the one from the hospital. They work best.), orajel, lotion, Q-tips and if you have a boy who you circumcise you'll need Vaseline and guaze pads for when you get home until it heals.
Mattress: ours was not organic and did not smell like chemicals. I like the idea of the organic cover though.
@AMShark I'm sure it'll work out. We did quite a bit of pack n play traveling and it went smoothly. Granted, we only had one, but I know you can handle it!

C/S: I got my OB to write a script for an abdominal binder in the hospital (they kept them on the floor- just needed a script). It helped sooooo much with walking. I didn't need it when sitting, but it made that awful tugging whole standing feeling so much better.
Medicine Cabinet: dye free Tylenol (my boys only like cherry flavored), rectal thermometer, nose Frida, q-tips, Vaseline, nail clippers (go on amazon and read reviews. A lot of them are junk). You can get infant Motrin, but you can't use it for six months. You can also get some infant vitamin d drops (which are recommended for BFing infants at a certain point).

1. Organic mattress question -- Yes, they do make a difference and are worth it. Ditto iluvboston re Naturepedic. We also have the inner coil spring version. And for two mini cribs, I purchased the Naturpedic organic mattresses of smaller size. You want to watch for toxic chemicals used in the foam, other fillers and the exterior material. The smell of non-organic mattresses can indicate that the products used include harsh and/or toxic chemicals. Over time, for example, the inner materials can break down and aerosolize so baby can breathe in the fine particles. Naturepedic mattresses do not have flame retardants, which are of concern to me. Naturepedic uses other means of ensuring safety. For similar reasons, I've spent a good deal of time researching safe infant car seats and strollers, from the chemical exposure perspective.
2. Belly binders post csection -- My first child was born via csection after a long, miserable failed induction. I was not prepared for a csection, so I didn't have anything special with me. The hospital gave me a binder to wear which was a godsend. It makes moving around more comfortable. I'm having a RCS and plan to use the binder provided by the hospital again. It is a 9" DeRoyal hospital-grade abdominal binder. You can get them on Amazon.
3. Medicine cabinet -- You don't need much to start. You already mentioned infant's tylenol. At some point, you'll want to have corn starch around which helps with wet burns baby sometimes gets on the neck from nursing or the bottle. Baking soda for baths when baby has a rash. PiYo baby nail clippers. Aquaphor. Nose Frieda. Our pediatrician discourages taking baby's temperature rectally, so we purchased an infrared thermometer instead. Dove sensitive bar soap, thr only soap our pediatric dermatologist said is ok to use on a newborn (and then he said to stick with water only and use soap only if there is a big blowout). As for Orajel and other topical analgesics for mouth pain, you might want to research the use of benzocaine products in children under 2 and decide whether you are ok using such products. Our pediatrician said no benzocaine topicals. Orajel even mentions with FDA warning on their website.

Ok, so car seats. We used Orbit with our daughter because the products were advertised as being free of toxic flame retardants. However, a recent Duke University study showed that this isn't quite true. So began my search for a safer, toxic flame-retardant free infant car seat, which led us to the Nuna Pippa. The Pippa car seat is rated high for safety in crash tests and is one of the safest alternatives from a chemical perspective. It works with Maxi Cosi seat adapters and Nuna itself makes a lot of adapters for many different strollers. There is a website I can suggest with reviews of many brands for safety if you'd like more information.

I also look at products available through a store called Spr.out Sa.n Fran.cisco and I've contacted the store for help in locating safer baby products. We have a store near us and so I've ordered big items, like furniture, through SSF. The employees are knowledgable and really do care about the products they offer and recommend.

@luvboston & @AmCheri -follow up question on the Naturpedic mattress. We have one of them and it seems like it's covered with a waterproof outer layer. Do I still need a crib pad with that, or can I put the sheets directly on it?

@turquoisequeen We have tylenol which we haven't needed, my LO is only 7 weeks old. So far we used gas drops and learned that because we are exclusively breastfeeding we need to give her Vitamin D drops (wish I knew this ahead of time, running to store not easy immediately postpartum). Vitamin D comes in two forms, the type that you give 1ml in a syringe or 1 drop that can go on your nipple or pacifier (recommend the 1 drop kind!). https://www.cdc.gov/breastfeeding/recommendations/vitamin_d.htm
Me: 30, DH: 32
My hx: uterus/hormones normal Dx: low AMH 0.5 = poor ovarian reserve
hubby hx: low sperm count, poor motility, started on clomid, retest in May showed no improvement, will be on clomid another 3 months, another retest scheduled for August
Started IVF #1: ~BFP Mentioned~
My little one isn't even that old yet, but she is 7 weeks and I can tell you what has helped us survive until now! lol I'll add stuff different from @luvboston
1) Breastfeeding stuff, if you plan to. Hands free pumping bra! Savior. Nipple cream, disposable and non-disposable nursing pads, a couple packs of soothies (to soothe boobs/not the pacifier), at least 4 nursing bras, luna lullaby nursing pillow, medela steam and clean bags, baby dish detergent, first years breastflow milk storage container/works great with breastmilk bags, Vitamin D drops.
2) Baby swing (sometimes baby gets super fussy and this is the only thing to quiet her down!)
3) Pack n' play (we have sleeping in the bassinet portion in our room, really makes it easier with breastfeeding, weight limit is 15 pounds so she'll be kicked back to her room in a month or so)
4) Comfy changing pad (we have ours on a dresser)
5) Baby bouncer
6) Baby Gym
7) Boba wrap (great for getting things done around the house when baby wants to be held)
8) She mentioned blankets (gotta say we love our Aden Anais swaddle blankets and have like 12 of them, they get spit up on etc.)
