Re: Longest Thread EVER! (aka Random Thoughts Thread )

  • Still hunting for a place and childcare. Anyone have good luck with care.com? Why is this so hard? And it seems the average is $15 an hour! That's over 2k a month! Anyone one have other ideas I haven't thought of yet?

  • Uhm yeah, holy random drive by.

@macgrs we have slate in our kitchen and I like it. Super easy to clean, but shows evvvvvvvvvvverything. I do a lot of sweeping. Bonus, it doesn't stain and it's super hard to chip/crack. I can steam mop it and it looks great after.

  • Popping in to say Hi! Sorry I've been gone forever it seems like. I had some last minute Christmas projects that seriously sucked up ever last second of my free time, and then some! Hope everyone had a fantastic 1st Christmas with their LO's. Both my boys were sick so it wasn't quite as much fun as I was hoping.

  • Yeah that's such a tragic story. I don't envy that kid the hefty amount of therapy he's going to need to process that one.

Just hope he's young enough to not understand or remember. Awful!
That kinda makes me wonder. I mean, assuming he's too young to remember (and at that age, he probably is), when do you tell him the truth? Do you ever tell him the truth? Because yes and no both sound like the wrong answer, from a moral perspective. Whoa.

  • Sounds like she was a responsible gun owner- well trained. So why wasn't the safety on the gun? Or was it on, and the baby just disengaged it?
I thought they were harder to disengage so that...Ya know... Babies can't do it.

What a shitty situation all around.

I hope that was sarcasm?  Because I don't think I'd call it responsible gun-ownership.

And fun facts: not all guns have manual safeties and manual safeties are designed to prevent accidental discharges, not access by children.

I wasn't being sarcastic. But let me clarify. :-) She'd had a lot of training and shooting practice. That's a responsible thing to do if you own a gun.

I definitely would not call her responsible for leaving a loaded gun in her purse (even one designed for that purpose, whatever that means). I can't even fathom that.

Ok, I see what you're saying.

I don't know how exactly she was carrying (beyond "in a purse").  It is possible to carry safely in a purse with a properly designed holster (most time a gun goes off in a purse, it's not in a proper holster)... but I always warn my students against it.  Especially if they have kids.  Off-body carry is inherently more risky than on-body carry.

  • What I read is that her DH just bought her the purse for Christmas, with a "hidden zipper pocket" made for a gun. Obviously not so hidden or secure.

This is what I heard as well. The purse was designed with a holster for the gun.

In regards to a safety, my handgun is a compact model and the only safety is in the trigger. My husband has the same gun, only full size, and his safety is hard to turn off. So that would depend on the model of the gun.

I'd tell the truth. That's the kind of thing you want to learn from your parent, not some accidental slip down the road. And I think keeping secrets tends to make whatever it is into a bigger deal - hiding it implies the kid should feel bad or guilty or that he did something wrong. I think getting stuff out there takes some if the sting out of it, you know? But yeah, that's gonna take some therapy either way. I keep thinking about my 2 year old and how he gets upset about stuff, like he asks me what's wrong if I put my head down, and he says sorry and looks upset if he hurts me somehow and I yelp - but he's almost 3. I really hope that 2 year old was younger and wasn't as aware of other people yet. Idk, I want to cry when I think about it.
Yeah, I agree with you. It's just really difficult to picture that conversation. It's like there's no way to ease into it. The entire weight of it would hit you in the one instant you realize that it was you who pulled the trigger and there's just no way to avoid that in the conversation. I can only imagine how crushing that will be. So sad. :(

There's an online version... Not nearly as fun, but it's an option until you find some CAH friends!

To put it as tastefully as possible: putting Saran Wrap on someone's face and then shitting on it. Can't really class that one up at all...
Actually, I think that's a Warm Carl. A Hot Carl is sans Saran.
Did you get this knowledge from UrbanDictionary, or is something more sinister at work here? :-?
