If you are on assistance and struggling to make ends meet is it right to go out and "let your hair down"? You should get your ducks in a row before "cutting loose" and spending money elsewhere then your struggling family.
Thank you! I would love to take a vacation rather than pay my mortgage every month but that doesn't happen.
I'm sure some children did go hungry and I don't think that is a good thing but I do believe that it put a boot in the parents ass to try to get some shot together.
@asws1208 I think you said it wonderfully. Thank you!
Exactly! I do not wish bad things on anyone, especially children. And I am not necessarily saying pull the rug out from under everyone and let them suffer.. But point is SOMETHING has to be done to get the PARENTS back on their feet! Enabling them by providing assistance for the long term is doing NO ONE any good! It does not teach the children personal responsibility nor does it the parents. The system is broken and if something is not done we will have a country full of entitled ass holes who do not want to be responsible or accountable for their mistakes or their children.
And before all of you tight asses FREAK THE FUCK OUT - I am in NO WAY talking about people who are truly disabled, parents of children with outrageous medical bills because of a sick child or spouse.. There are exceptions in every case. I am talking about people who don't finish school, have multiple children they can't afford, don't look for work after being laid off, don't work two jobs when they are capable if that is what they need to do, still buy beer and cigarettes when they use their EBT card for food... THIS is where my problem is.
Oh fuck off. You are acting like a complete twat. Not everyone can do things YOUR way, the way you deem to be correct. Seriously. Shut the fuck up.
Seriously? I don't think that anyone in their right mind would say that any of the things I mentioned would be considered WRONG.
What you said was that parents who don't go to college don't deserve government assistance. You can fuck right off with that line of thinking.

Depending on WHY they didn't go. NO, they don't. Laziness, carelessness, and multiple bad decisions don't deserve it!
I never said it had to be expensive to have fun. It was eluded that by people on assistance (who don't have money) should get to go out and let their hair down. Assuming that means give themselves a break and do something money related. Free fun does exist. Don't twist my words.

I was the one who said people on assistance should be able to let their hair down. And I will 100% argue that fact. Just because you can't afford every day to day expense doesn't mean you shouldn't ever get to enjoy something until you can get off of assistance. Guess what? Most beaches are fucking free. The Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago? Free. But if someone on assistance on FB posted "Went to the zoo today, had a blast!" or photos of their kids enjoying the zoo animal I guaran-damn-tee you would be there quietly judging them from behind your computer screen.
Call me as asshole. I do believe that unless they have their financial shit together they shouldn't go spend money on outings like those that cost money.

Jesus Christ I didn't say YOU HAVE TO GO TO COLLEGE I was just giving examples. If you are stuck in a minimum wage job and having to collect food stamps and you didn't go to college because you spent all your time drinking and partying and having children - that is my point.

OK THAT Is TOTALLY FINE BUT - if that is how you choose to spend your time - then if you are stuck making 7.50 at McDonalds and can't do anything else YOU DONT DESERVE FOOD STAMPS
I don't think there will ever be a solution everyone is happy with. I just think the system as it is now is broken and needs fixing. I do see kids suffering in my classroom and I do everything I can to help them. If things were as they should be then those kids who are hungry and suffering wouldn't be. Their parents would be spending their aid in their kids.

You people are UNREAL. I have compassion for those who HONESTLY STRUGGLE why is that so hard to get across through a fucking keyboard. If you are HONESTLY STRUGGLING I have compassion. You deserve help. BUT IF YOU ARE A LAZY ASS WITH 5 KIDS, NO DEGREE - by your own fault, NO JOB... THEN FUCK OFF IT IS YOUR OWN FAULT YOU ARE POOR

So it's only an honest struggle if you went to college and got a degree and THEN fell on hard times? It's not an honest struggle if you were young and dumb and got knocked up in high school and had to fend for yourself and your child and relied on government assistance to get you by? YOU are unreal, lady.
What the hell did people do before the government provided these assistances? I'm not saying kids should go hungry or homeless. I just wonder if people were more likely to take personal accountability of their situation or not.
My point exactly. People feel so entitled these days to this type of assistance. Yes, it is incredibly unfortunate when children are involved and while I do not think that the children should suffer, I think the major problem is a broken system that allows people to abuse it and children to suffer. I don't know where all of you live, but I know that where I am it is ABUSED, and BADLY. I know multiple people on different types of assistance that are in the situations they are in because of BAD choices and CONTINUING to make bad choices. Bad things happen, people make mistakes... But multiple mistakes? Multiple children while you are already receiving assistance? Spending the money you do have on unnecessary goods that are WANTS and NOT NEEDS? This is where I have a problem.
@paigeed once upon a time the raising of children was seen as more of a 'it takes a village' type of thing. There were multiple generations living in a home together and making the family work. That does not exist anymore.
asws1208, please do some research. The truth about entitlements abuse will probably shock you. It is a very small number of people that are abusing the system. You are interpreting what you are seeing in your community, but that does not mean you know the whole story. People rarely talk about all the failures in their life. We do have a problem with entitled assholes in this country, but they are generally the ones that pay very little in taxes due to loopholes, but make millions upon millions a year at the expense of their workers. Perhaps if people were paid a decent wage, the number of people on assistance would shrink. You are a Tea Partier, right?

Obviously none of you went to college because you can't fucking read or look at any of my comments as a whole view point rather than sentence by sentence. There are exceptions to everything. You don't have to have a degree or go to college to be successful. And you don't have to have a degree and THEN fall on hard times to deserve assistance. You just have to have done everything in your power to make things better for yourself and your family before it is deserved.

So working at McDonald's and making $7.50 doesn't qualify as doing "everything in your power to make things better for yourself and your family?"

No I do not think that people are cruising the Caribbean but I do know what I see in my everyday life. I don't know every single person's story and neither do any of you. So I speak from personal experience just like each one of you do. Example. My sister in law. Dropped out of high school. Smokes weed, drinks, parties, lives at home with mom and dad. Last year, winds up pregnant. Now, she still lives at home, no education, a baby who was born weeks early and spent weeks in NICU costing the state thousands and thousands of dollars beacuse she has no healthcare. Now, she is on WIC while she sits at home eating cheetos and drinking mountain dew getting free day care and formula and diapers and her parents take care of her child and she won't get a job or go to school. Please give me one good fucking reason someone like that should receive assistance. I am not speaking for every person in america that gets some type of assistance I am talking about those who abuse it and if it is the minority FINE. Even if it is .000001% of people who are abusing it i feel the same way. Why is it not relevant if there isnt a majority doing it?
I think the name calling on this thread is really out of hand.
There is a large national divide of ideologies when it comes to this topic for a reason. Both sides have some valid arguments, and it really just depends on how you feel about things.
I think that the OP was talking about one specific instance of a girl who seemed to already be abusing the assistance she was getting. The girl then gets pregnant and rejoices about the additional assistance she'll be able to receive.
If she's already got one child and is on assistance, under what theory is it a good idea to have a second child, when she clearly doesn't have the financial ability to care for the first?
And I think it is very ignorant and naive to believe that anyone with viewpoints similar to mine or the OP's MUST come from privilege. That is certainly not the case. I know many people with viewpoints MUCH more extreme than mine or OP's who came from nothing, did not go to college, and do not earn $50k+. Making sweeping generalizations and calling others ignorant just seems silly.

So, what do you suggest the solution is? How would you propose to change the system so that small percentage of people that do abuse can no longer abuse?
There are people whose sole job is to try to change the system, update the system, weed out the abuses. And do you know what study after study has shown? That the people that would be hurt by all the really intelligent solutions thought up by people that have no clue about poverty are the people that are not abusing the system.
There is no governmental system on earth that does not have people abusing it. Please for the love of all thing good on this earth, educate yourself about this. Oh, and since you made a big deal about us not having degrees. I have my Masters and I will even let you know what I do for a living. I procure entitlements for people. I know the ins and the outs of this system and you do not. It is okay to have an opinion, but I suggest you spend some time researching your facts.
OK THAT Is TOTALLY FINE BUT - if that is how you choose to spend your time - then if you are stuck making 7.50 at McDonalds and can't do anything else YOU DONT DESERVE FOOD STAMPS
I'm still stuck on this statement. I didn't work at McDonald's, however I did work in retail for 6 years, slowly making my way up the chain. Yes, I had government and yes, I used it the right way. But that is besides the point, since in your own words I didn't deserve it to begin with.
I used the government assistance until I could get to a point where I was able to provide for myself and my kids. I worked my ass off to get to where I am today but I relied HEAVILY on my food stamps when I was still just a lowly retail worker with no experience and no college education. And all of that time I spent in retail, learning customer service skills and collecting food stamps, got me to the point where I was able to get a job that pays more than just about any job in my area.
But none of that matters, the fact that I used the system EXACTLY how it was intended to be used, to you. All that matters, in your VERY OWN WORDS, is that I had a kid and didn't go to college and had a job where I started out making LESS than $7.50/hour and I used government assistance.
Hi guys. I was lurking; now I'm not. I wanted to say some things. I don't have data, but I can find some.
Poverty is cyclical. How does one know the import of college, avoiding substances, financial planning, sexual health and decision making if no one has modeled it for that individual. The answer is he/she doesn't. And thus the poverty cycle continues. So saying "don't be lazy! Work hard" Is like telling a child who hasn't yet learned to read "Just read this paragraph! It will make your life perfect."
Poverty also occurs via circumstance. My father is disabled due to a series of accidents and health scares. My mother is not. But guess who had to quit her job to become his caretaker. No one paid her a salary to keep my father in good health, but I would argue that that is working damn hard. So to anyone whoever told me, "why doesn't your mom just get a job?" Here's a big middle finger. How dare you tell someone to decide. My mom got her nails done for job interviews once my dad was in better health. Is that not allowed?
As a child, I didn't understand my family's' financial situation, but I sure as shit knew when someone else was wearing Tommy Hilfiger and I wasn't. How would you like to have that conversation with your children about why they don't fit in? We went thrift shopping. I got hand me downs.
Let me also point out that I was sexually active at 17. I didn't get pregnant. I was lucky. How dare you judge someone whose fate (or whatever you chose to believe) took them in a different direction.
I'm gonna leave this here and go eat some skittles.
OK THAT Is TOTALLY FINE BUT - if that is how you choose to spend your time - then if you are stuck making 7.50 at McDonalds and can't do anything else YOU DONT DESERVE FOOD STAMPS

Do you realize how ridiculous you sound?
It also bugs me that previous "mistakes" = no assistance forever. So if someone has a baby/smokes weed through college/never tries to go to college/doesn't try to better themselves/insert whatever other arbitrary reason asws will come up with, they are forever doomed and can never get help to give themselves a better chance? What if they realize they have not done the best with what they had but now they want to try to change that, except because they don't "deserve" it they are now stuck. Man. I have yet to meet a perfect person so I guess none of us should get food stamps. Bummer.

Try again. I have a dual BA in IR and Political Science and an MA in Public Policy. Oh, and I worked in the not-for-profit sector for 5+ years.
You can't read, because if you did read something, you'd say everything you have written here is lies, half-truths and myths spread by other ignorant assholes like yourself.
I've given you and @paigeed numerous articles from legit sources to read. No comment so far other than all your little stories about welfare abuses and more rantings that everyone else here can't read.
My parents didn't go to college. In fact, they barely finished high school, yet my father successfully ran his own construction business for YEARS. At one point, they still had to go on food stamps because my sister was diagnosed with lymphoma and her medical bills were in the 6 figure range. Guess they should pay that money back because they didn't go to college, huh?
NEVER EVER EVER EVER said you had to go to college to be successful. And please read back I said there are circumstances where people fall on hard times FOR EXAMPLE WITH AN ILLNESS... And how is it lies and half truths just because it isn't the majority of what may be happening?
@MrsMuq I read the articles and again bottom line on my point is I KNOW NOT EVERYONE ABUSES THE SYSTEM. I know some people need it. I know bad things happen to good people. I know i know i know i know. I don't think all poor people should rot on the side of the road and never be given a chance. BUT BACK TO THE WHOLE REASON THIS WAS POSTED was when OP says that there is a woman who is SEEMINGLY abusing the system it makes me very angry! And I know plenty of people who do abuse it. I don't care about the articles you posted or the actual statistics I know what I see in my everyday life and i KNOW SOME PEOPLE ABUSE IT. And I do NOT think that you should be allowed assistance unless you BUST YOUR ASS day in and day out to make things better. There are extremes to everything and it seems like most of you think so matter what we should help people indefinitely.

So does this go for only people on assistance? Or should I not have had that Starbucks this morning even though I get no assistance but I'm poor? LMK.
This doesn't even make sense. The point is if you are on assistance you should be more wise about how you spend your money and vacations and starbucks would not be what I consider wise. If you are not on assistance why would this even be relevant to the conversation.
No they should not and they should not have clean water or air condition or toilet paper either.
I hope this is a joke. This is fucking sick. People on government assistance shouldn't have clean water? What the actual fuck?! So then the people who already can't afford decent healthcare can overuse emergency rooms, because that's the only place they can go to get care, because they are drinking, bathing, and cooking with dirty water and get God knows what diseases? Guess who pays for the medical bills for people who don't have their own health care through an employer or individual plan?

YOU ARE FREAKING CRAZY it was a joke because everything I have said has been taken WAY off the tracks and into a whole different world.
You know who shouldn't have babies? Dipshit 22 year olds who have no clue how the world operates.
You are wise.
This whole thread makes me want to punch twat waffles.
My brother has a debilitating, painful disease. It's incurable and he'll die young. It took a year, 3 attempts and 850 pages of medical documentation to get him disability, which barely covers the rent on a shithole apartment. Know how much he gets in food stamps per month? $50. Know what part of the treatment is for his disease? Eating only gluten free and whole foods. Know how long $50 will feed you on that kind of diet? About 3 days, not 30. And that's if you don't eat a lot.
He's saving up money to go to a comedy show next month because it's his girlfriend's birthday and they haven't gone out to do anything fun like that in years. Is he allowed to do that? Apparently not because my taxes last year kicked in a nickle or two to feed him. Or is is okay for him to splurge once because when his GF got pregnant with twins WHILE on her free contraception, they chose not to continue the pregnancy because they didn't feel capable of caring for the children properly. He lives with that loss daily. So because he's not using your money to pay for those babies, is it okay for him to have one night out a year?
Oh wait, he has an illness. So he's okay to take your money. It's my mom who shouldn't have had it when she got unexpectedly pregnant at 19 with no job or education. Obviously she didn't deserve her WIC because she was a good for nothing slut. Too bad they didn't just let me starve to death.
I love the whole idea that people are making big bucks off our tax dollars. I've met loads of people in my life on assistance. Most are ashamed. I've met exactly one who was all "woohoo free money". I don't mind supporting a few of those if it means babies aren't starving to death.
God the stupidity here is astounding.
Again, there are exceptions. I never said a word about people who were honestly disabled or ill not deserving the assistance in fact I said that those are the very people that do deserve it. And I never used the word slut so that is you putting that out there.

I am so sorry for your brother. What state is he in? I have a database at my fingertips of resources and programs that people that are not in the field likely do not know about.

I'm gonna leave this here and go eat some skittles.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2014/07/08/this-is-what-happened-when-i-drove-my-mercedes-to-pick-up-food-stamps/
Bummer.
I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.
