DH's grandpa just put up his 1950s house with zero updates, a 900 sqft main floor, 650 sqft upstairs and unfinished basement on the market in Toronto for $598,000.  And got a full price offer within 24 hours.
Growing up in a mid-COL area, I would have a really hard time with this.  But that's what you're used to, it probably has a little less sticker shock to it.

I don't know how people afford a mortgage that big. I assume a lot of Toronto homeowners rent out their basements to students? I can't see any other way unless you're making a wicked salary.
    Me: 27 DH: 28

@BillyMollyEmmy, you guys should probably just pack up and move to the Midwest...MI and WI are right over the border! :-)  It's a lot cheaper!

Our first house we bought in TX was 2000sqft, 5 years old with high ceilings, stone fireplace, 100% brick, wood or over sized tile in most of the house, cute front porch, in a fantastic school district and desirable area for $145k. This is why we can never move any where with a HCOL.
I'm dying to move back to TX and this is one of the reasons.  We could get a house so much nicer than ours in a great school district for way less than we can get here in NJ.  It sucks.

  • I've never brought my kids to chuck e cheese. I don't think they are missing out on anything.
I don't plan on telling my kids that Chuck e Cheese exists.  It's so germy and loud and gross.  Yes, they will find out from their friends and that's fine.  I'm sure we will have to go eventually, but I'm not bringing it up.
I plan on telling DD that the ice cream truck is a 'music box' truck. My parents told me the same thing when I was younger.  $2(or whatever the price is) for a popsicle is a ripoff.

I think money conversations, particularly in real life, are awkward. Different values, expectations, etc. lead to judging often in my observations. I dislike "keeping up with the Joneses", especially now because in my group of friends, we are the "Joneses'. This is far from a bragplaint. That mentality has led to distance in friendships because someone is stressed about finances and thinks I couldn't relate. Similarly, CJ goes to daycare with some affluent families. I get so annoyed by the sizing up that happens. People are just people - stuff/money/lack thereof doesn't make them good or bad - it just shows the true nature. I can't beat the dead horse of assistance. ;)
My "bff" makes more than DH and I do combined.  She's a tax manager.  She's CONSTANTLY talking about shopping, or how much she spent on this that or the other thing.  It's a huge turn off to me.  Especially because when it comes to other people, she's the cheapest person I know.  It sucks that you guys are dealing with the strained relationships.  Unless you're like my friend and are a complete ass about it, it sucks that it's getting in the way.

  • I don't understand how all of the house prices in different states/countries can be comparable.  The house prices in my neighborhood have a big range but a huge factor in paying for a home here is the taxes.  When we bought our house in 2008, we paid $128K but our payments each month are almost doubled due to taxes and insurance.  FTR, it's a 3 bedroom, 1.5 bathroom house with 1125 sq. ft.  and it was in great shape when we bought it but extremely dated (dishwasher and stove were from '68 and '69).

I havent read anything. BUT I HAVE ONE.

I've never taken the boy to the doctor, not a single time... not for anything - check up or sickness. I think its pointless (and not because we cant afford it or anything.. OH CANADA).. he's obviously hitting his milestones and we see a nurse for his shots. Whatever, whatever.

When I was visiting my friend down your way I was amazed at how reasonable updated/new construction homes were, and taxes were so much less.  More than half of our mortgage will be taxes.

Sigh. I wish we weren't anchored to this area sometimes.

Does the nurse listen to his internal organs with a stethoscope?

And if you felt ds was sick enough to need a doctor, would you take him?

Last summer, H and I became obsessed with a burger topper that I picked up at Home Goods randomly.

I was trying to find it again this year, and we found out it had been discontinued, and was only available through wholesale distribution.

FIL has a distribution entity that he set up awhile back, and we used the company name so that we could order this burger topper...in bulk.

    Shameful.  It's that delicious, though.

Price per sqft is a little more here than it was in TX but TX property taxes were a lot higher than here so it ends up being a better deal here in TN. But our sales tax is one of the highest in the country. Every state gets their money some how.

Terrapin Ridge Farms Hot Pickled Pepper burger topper...

It has apparently been replaced by Pipin' Hot Pepper Jam & Relish, which isn't available on their website for some reason.

All of their stuff is delicious though...

She has listened to his heart yeah..
Im not anti-doctor... I just think its insane how often people lug their kids in for the smallest things. If my kid had a cold that was escalating instead of getting better after a couple days, or was acting way out of character I'd take him in.

You can get a great house in my area for $150-200k.  If you don't mind 70s decor, you can get a solid 3bed 1.5ba house for 130k.  eta: safe neighborhoods and okay schools, not the greatest on either front but good enough ;)

p.s. salaries are pretty low here though, so it balances out

I don't have a huge issue with this (shocker, I know) other than the physical exam part that he is missing, ie. checking for red reflex of the eye, hernias, femoral aneurysms, head shape, etc.

Actually, as I was writing that list, I changed my mind.  I think well checks are useful to make sure that is nothing else going on.  Something that your nurse cannot do at all.  And dude, it's "free"!
Sounds fair. I even just googled femoral aneurysms.

  • Every single wall in  my house I thought was white, is not.  I guess the entrance has a lavender hue, the bathroom a grey hue, the kitchen a slightly off white towards peach hue and no clue what the living room is.  That may be white.  Why?! why so many slight variations of white?!

Also, the fact that you can get a great house in a great area for 150k BLOWS MY MIND.
I love watching House Hunters to see what you can get for so "cheap".

A 900sq dump in a super shitty area of my city is like minimum 200k.
RIDICULOUS. This isnt even really a HCOL area.

  • Also, I'm trying to find a picture of our house when we moved in so you can all see exactly what $150k bought us :)

The basement bar was gold-speckled mirror, and illegal bar 'sink', red countertop, and orange shag carpeted WALLS.
    I want to see this!

To be fair, we bought our house for $130K. However, it's one bath, two bedrooms, no basement. It's basically an apartment with a back yard.

I'm in a "good" area.  Not a stellar one.  Low crime, good schools, etc.  Our house is 1800sq ft, 3bd/2ba, finished basement and on 3/4 of an acre and we paid $183K.  It was listed at $235 originally and had just been lowered to $209K when we looked at it.  The previous owners were living a part because they had been trying to sell their house for so long.  It was a great deal.  It also helps that we'll be able to sell for more than we bought/owe since the market seems to be picking up here.
