Just wanted to say - I got DH to agree to the flip-type (cover?) system since he can use disposable inserts. Yay!
Are there any covers that fit newborns well that I can use disposable inserts in? I saw it mentioned elsewhere that flips tend to be big, and I'd like to start sooner rather than later.
The capri system is Blueberry Diapers' answer to Flips. It looks like their size 1 goes down to 6 pounds, so that could work for nb.
Anyone used Thirsties Duo AIOs? They appear to be AIOs, but with the ability to add a doubler. I feel like the only chance that I have of talking DH into using cloth is if they are AIOs (and to be completely honest, I don't really feel like stuffing pockets if I don't have to). I see zero chance of him using prefolds with a cover.
I haven't used those (maybe someone else has?), but I do believe a few of the AIOs have a pocket to add additional stuff in. Just keep in mind, AIOs have a much longer drying time - just be aware
Has anyone become completely overwhelmed after researching & reading reviews for all of the options with CD'ing? Right when I think we have it narrowed down to a diaper brand or type I see something else or read something else and am back at square one. I was all set to do AIO's but after going to a local boutique that was highly recommended by friends who CD, I'm back at the beginning and now leaning towards pre-folds to start. The Hubs likes the gPants ones to try as well. Those are more hybrid or pocket type but he's up to try a few of this and a few of that which is what I think we'll do. Maybe 3 AIO's, 3 hybrid/pocket but the more I research the more wishy washy I get about which to do.
You might want to consider a trial - something like this:

I feel very overwhelmed by it. All the ladies have been so helpful, but I still feel so clueless to all the terms. I have bought about 12 CD, a bunch of different ones, hoping one or so will work out and then I can go from there.
Has anyone ever used fleece for a liner/insert/etc? Are there any particular tricks that go into this? Obviously, you'd need more for more absorbancy, but can it go directly against skin, how do you prep it, etc?

Ok, I got 6 NB covers (3 Bummis, I can't remember the other brand) and 3 OS flips, 1 medium G-diaper. Does this sound like a good amount of covers to start with?
How many inserts/pre-folds should I start with?
Fleece isn't absorbent, so you can't really use it as an "insert" - you can use it as a liner, which is what I've done if I ever have to use a non-CD safe diaper cream - just buy some fleece (I honestly don't remember which kind - I'm crafty-disinclined), cut into squares, and put between baby and diaper.
I think that sounds like a good number of covers. Depending on how you plan to CD, you might need more OS covers, but if you are going to use pockets or AIOs, you won't need more.
I'm late to this party but I'm a STM with a full CD stash from when we CD'd DS. This child will cost pretty much nothing to diaper. We may buy a few new Thirsties covers because DS's did get pretty worn. But I don't see us spending over $75 on this babe.
What is the best sprayer for your toilet? Did you buy the splash guard thing and was it worth it? I've seen on the extreme cheapskates show on TLC people just hook up regular sink sprayers to the toilet so why not do that instead of these fancy ones? Just wondering :-D
I purchased the Bumgenius sprayer 4 years ago and DH installed it. Which in and of itself is a minor miracle b/c it worked, although we then had a leak into our kitchen. So clearly we were not going to be DIYers over this, although I have seen many people rig their own sprayers out of this and that. I'd like my house to not fall down, so I'm lucky I have what I got.
Not sure what splash guard you're talking about, @MrsRahl - I know there is this trifold plastic thing that was going around a couple of years ago, but I didn't buy it. I just spray the diaper into the toilet... I haven't found it to be an insurmountable task that requires additional accessories.
ok so we decided to go with GroVia for daytime and Softbums Omni for nighttime. I am prepping the first few we just bought and I am FREAKING OUT that I am doing it wrong and I'm going to ruin everything. does anyone want to help me make sure I'm doing it right? or you don't have to help just tell me it's all good and not to worry. I am super special and need encouragement.
I know someone said they just use Tide or Tide free and clear. Can it be the liquid detergent or do I need to use something different (to prep now and eventually to wash)?

@elsa1688 Great question - I've read that the liquids could have things in them that make it harder to wash totally clear from the diaper, therefore making it possible to have buildup that would then repell liquids from the diaper. And then I've read stuff recently that says that liquids rinse clear more easily than powders... So it's really a toss up. You can always try the liquid and then if you start to get buildup, strip and switch.
Is there any specific process for prepping cotton prefolds? They are Osocozy bleached Chinese cotton.
Everything else I'm buying has already been prepped, but these aren't. Since the point of prepping is to build up moisture-retention (from my understanding) can I just soak the prefolds, dry them out, soak again, dry them out, and then wash them with the rest of my inserts?
You can boil them, or you can wash 5 times - the detergent helps to get the oils out of the material. Don't wash/prep with synthetic materials until after they are prepped - you have to wait until those oils are out.
Newb alert: I have a bunch of pocket diapers that I have prepped. All the inserts are ready to be stuffed into pockets... Are the inserts mix and match or do they need to go in the diapers they came in?
Most of my diapers I match the inserts with the diapers but that's because a large majority of my stash is fuzzibunz and they are pretty narrow so not all my inserts fit well.

@elsa1688 As @MNOpea mentioned, sometimes you want to stick to the brand - FBs (FuzziBunz) are narrower diapers, so other inserts won't work, but aside from that, you can mix inserts and diapers. I never do... but I'm crazy - I like things to match
beings some of you wash your cloth diapers in tide original powder, do you also wash your little ones clothes in tide original powder too?
@MrsRahl Yep.... I use Tide for everything - streamlines the process. Now, if you have a kid who is sensitive to Tide, then you probably wouldn't use it for diapers OR clothes and would go with a different option. I never had that problem, but it could impact your detergent choice.
I just realised I have 15 'small' pea pods, and about 15 of the 'one size fits all' bum genius... And I know you have commented before that the new baby should only wear the small... So, should I stock up on more small, or use some disposables, or wash more often or???
@Babywear I found our one-size diapers (Bumgenius, Blueberry, etc) didn't fit until the baby was about 10-12 pounds, so you wouldn't be able to use those when they are itty bitty. The number of newborn size diapers you buy is up to you, but having only 15 would likely mean you'd need to wash every day, which might be more than you're willing to do during those early, sleep deprived weeks. So, it's up to you - supplement with disposables, get some more, or just wash more often. I'm aiming to have 24-36 diapers on hand to wash every 2-3 days, if that gives you a sense of numbers. It's a lot - you change the baby a lot in the beginning - but since this is likely our last baby, I'm planning on selling all of my newborn diapers once we get to the one-size size, and I'm anticipating getting most of my money back.
Does anyone have experience with Zulily diapers? I know it depends on the brand, but I bought a couple just for the cute factor. I'm planning on using mostly BG and Charlie bananas but I've heard the Zulily diapers are usually from China and aren't very good. Thoughts?

Depends on the brand. Ive seen mostly non-name brands lately, which makes me think china. Once in a while they have FuzziBunz or Charlie Banana or one of those.
we are on day 3 of CDs for DS and it's pretty amazing. I have already figured out which ones I prefer (Softbums OMG!) it almost makes me want to consider CD for new baby. I want to buy all the diapers!
@chickpea912 does china automatically = bad? And what does bad mean? Leaky?
It's usually a quality issue, but I know plenty of people who use only/mostly china diapers and love them. One bad thing about buying china diapers from places like zulily is they are usually rebranded and you end up paying much more than they are worth
@CDK211 oh you're going to get me started! lol I am loving the Omni system because I feel like it's the best of all the worlds. it's an AI2/hybrid so you can snap the inserts in and out and reuse the shell as needed (sometimes if it's super wet I'll let it air dry and use a new one) but it also has a HUGE pocket I can stuff if I want some extra absorbency or if I want to use it like a pocket diaper if we are out of the house or my mom is watching him. the pods are amazingly absorbent and come in two sizes so you can use the newborn/mini insert as a booster if you want to on top of the larger one. plus I really like the way the leg gussets adjust. it doesn't have rise snaps on the front it has a string with a toggle that tucks in the front you just slide to adjust. I really like how personalized the fit is and I feel like you can really adjust them down to fit a tiny newborn
also it was the first time in MONTHS that DS woke up in the morning dry and not soaked through his pjs and on his sheets. I used the large and mini pod and then stuffed the pocket with a hemp doubler. I literally did a dance that I didn't have to change his sheets.
I have a question... I got a free bamboo flat diaper with my recent order on a diaper website. what do I use it for? do I fold it up and use it as an insert?
@elsa1688 I don't know if you're doing covers, but Assunta has super inexpensive (made in China) covers. I bought 6 for like $35 and the quality is actually really good. I have a hodge podge of things (Bummis, Thirsties, Assuntas, Kissas, Lil Joeys, Kawaiis, etc) and I can't tell a big different from the Assuntas and the Thirsties to be honest.
Successful CD prep weekend! We got 17 used newborn CDs at a cloth diaper garage sale (CD and baby wearing store puts this on). I also cranked out a large DIY wet bag!
OK, not CD related, but thought you guys would know.
What type of cloth nursing pads did you use and how many would I need?
I used disposable with DS and wanted to invest in cloth this time.
I didn't know much about my options when I had DS so I just used the Gerber ones I think? Whatever cloth nursing pads they sell at target. I didn't really love them though so I have definitely been looking on etsy for some new ones. I think I had enough for 2 pairs a day but could have used more, I also used disposable ones overnight
how do you store your CDs? do you just stack them on the changing table shelf or is there a nifty little caddy or something?
eta this may have been asked before but I am mobile and sifting through 10 pages of thread is a PITA
I have a plastic storage tote for my one sizes that I'm keeping under the bed till were ready for them and a wicker storage thing that fits in the changing table for my newborn sizes (one for those ready to go and one for prefolds/flats)

@stephross88 I store them in a drawer in the dresser. It took a while, but I found the photos on my blog from how I had things organized:
@chickpea912 what do you use for night time diapers? I've yet to find a diaper that doesn't leak for my 2 year old during the night. Though I've only tried Alva Baby's with multiple hemp/bamboo/microfiber combinations, and Thristies with prefolds... I'd love to find a good night time diaper so we can get rid of disposables!
Ok @chickpea912 you said tide original was ok, but what about tide free and gentle? It is also a powder...
I haven't tried it, but it could work. I love Stephanie at Abby's Lane who writes on Its the Cloth That counts - she has a few posts on washing and detergent choices. Definitely check it out.
@chickpea912 sorry if you already explained this, but I haven't looked at this thread in a couple days. Just saw your pic above and I'm wondering why you have that special Diaper Champ pail. Do you also use disposables? My friend gave me her old Arm & Hammer diaper pail but I want to cloth diaper and I"m wondering if I'll use her diaper pail at all.
I didn't link to the blog post those pictures came from, but in it I think I explained how we only used it for disposable wipes since it didn't really hold more than three cloth diapers. It was a gift I just haven't tossed out.

I do one of two things for nighttime. I either use a pocket diaper with a heavy duty hemp insert. Or I do a really good fitted diaper (I LOVE Twinkie Tush - www.twinkietush.com) with either a flip cover or wool. Those are my go to options.

does anyone know if the planet wise diaper pail liners fit in a standard 13 gal kitchen trash can?
