Re: Sh*t people say...

  • This isn't something that someone said to me directly, but I used to work as a cashier at Whole Foods and one of my supervisors came over one day and kinda pulled my shirt down.  The aprons we were had a tendency to make them slightly ride up.  I asked her what she was doing and she told me someone had complained that my back fat was showing....WTF people?!  Do you have nothing better to do with your time than go to customer service and complain about my back fat??

My Mom keeps reminding me that with her 3 kids and when my sister was pg with her 4 kids, they never got big bellies. Well they both are much heavier than I am when not pg. I am built like my dad so I am tall and lean so pg, my belly seems pretty big. It just always feels like she is judging me because my belly is more pronounced.

Checking back in late to the party, but by "more pronounced" I'm sure you also mean that you look much cuter!

  • From a very passive aggressive woman at church who doesn't like me:

"Congratulations on your baby! I didn't know until recently that you were pregnant. I mentioned to someone that marriage is really agreeing with you since you've really been packing obn the pounds."

All of this with a shit eating grin on her face. Every time she opens her mouth I have to resist the urge to punch a grandma.

(ETA her.. She is the grandma.)

People like her continue to behave like that because they believe they can continually get away with being passive aggressive. I would call her out on her shit with an up front "it's rude to discuss my weight at all, let alone with other people." Also, I am really snarky this late in my pregnancy so I might make a point to discuss at length how the book of Romans addresses gossip.

I wish I could be snarky on the fly! I never think of clever comebacks until I'm retelling the story later.

I've learned to just smile at this lady and hold it in. She just wants a reaction, and I refuse to bite. Total witch though. I'm sure she'll give me LOTS of parenting advice in the future, maybe I'll be good and snarky by then. I've got lots of ammo for her in that category as long as I can conjure it up in the moment!

  • Even though I pretty much feel like I'm the size of an RV, I guess most people still can't tell I'm pregnant.

Yesterday I had my scrubs on at work and a patient's family member reached out and poked me in the belly with her index finger, ET style.  I think she was trying to figure out if it was shirt or stomach.  I just looked at her and gave her kind of a weird smile and then she asked, "You got a little something going on in there?"

I just said yes and kind of kept on going.  It was very weird.  Not once during my last pregnancy did a stranger touch me.
If someone said this to me, there's a chance I would seriously not get it and try to ask clarifying questions back, and/or just about fall over laughing.

  • Really soon after my son was born and we took the baby for a walk, some rando in the parking lot congratulated my husband and said something like "That baby is definitely yours; he looks just like you."  Um, thanks?

Also, I fell down last Friday when we got the latest round of Epic Snow (and I'm fine! and the baby's also totally fine!) and since then DH is constantly, constantly telling me to not fall down.  It's kind of sweet, but also super irritating.  I'm trying to be careful, honest, but it's winter in the Mid Freaking West.  Ice happens.

She was joking and I can't be to mad since she is also helping throw my shower and made the garter and bouquets for my wedding while on lunch and breaks Monday night while we worked!   We are a close knit group on that shift and I expect this from them and don't worry I give it back so I need to be able to take it ... The only one that really bothered me was my daughter's BF. I raised her by myself never tell me I don't take care of her. I still pay for her health insurance and her phone.

  • Uhg, I have one that just happened (in front of my whole office).

So one of our employees is from China and he went to China for 3 weeks to see his extended family. He brought back lots of yummy treats to share with the office, including these delicious seasoned Nori chips. I ate a bunch of them yesterday (I was one of few people in my office that actually liked them).

So this morning when he gets in and I walk into the front office area he asks me in front of everyone "So Rachel, how many seaweed snacks did you have yesterday? Like all of them?"

Yeah ... definitely didn't even eat half of them, and it's not cute to point out all the food a pregnant woman eats to embarrass her. You try GROWING A HUMAN without consuming extra calories each day. And Nori chips are freaking healthy snacks at that.

Like Kenzie/Kensie but it's spelled with a Y instead of an I. Kinda like Mckenzie but without the Mc. If that makes sense
My oldest daughter's name is Kynzee. Everyone always adds the Mc despite not having it in her name so be prepared.

  • I was standing in the office yesterday with 2 other people who are pregnant also, but they are due in June. One is my height and size (our colleagues call us twins), and one is teeny and could basically fit in my pocket.

At least 4 people who walked by us looked at the teeny one and said "Oh, your bump is just so cute!" Then they would notice me and my "twin" and say things like "I mean, you're all beautiful, but look how little she is!"

    Gee. Thanks.

  • So after my trip to Wal-Mart I thought this belonged on this thread..
What about "the way people look at you" ?

As of the past couple weeks I've been getting a lot of dirty looks.. they don't say anything but they look at me horribly. This old couple in the waiting room at the lab yesterday were staring at my belly with the worst disapproving faces ever. Everytime I'm at a store it's the same thing.... they look at my husband then at me then at my belly... it's a very wtf moment in my head.

I wonder sometimes if it's cause I look underage.. I'll be 25 when LO is born but I've been told I look 16 sometimes.. and DH is 31... so I imagine that's why I get dirty looks..

It's driving me crazy.. I wish people would give me happy smiles and what not but eh what can you do?

  • My DH and I are 26 and are having our second child. A lot of people think we are teens though... Especially my husband. He was recently working with a new woman at his work who he barely knew and she was asking how old our DS is. He told her DS would be 2 years when the baby was born. She said, "wow, you do know how babies are made don't you?" He awkwardly laughed and then she said again, "no really, you do don't you?" No duh! The only thing I can think is she thought he was way younger than he is... But really... In this day and age I'm pretty sure most teens know how babies are made! Haha ;)

I get the same. DH and I are a baby faced 27 & 29 and we dress young, which doesn't help. Most people think we're about 21-23. We also live in an area where the average age to start a family is around 35 (lots of career women around here), so we genuinely look like teen parents and the looks we get reflect that. Never mind that we've been together 10 years, are both uni educated, have good jobs and a mortgage. People make so many assumptions based on appearances. I've even caught people looking at my hand for a wedding ring.

  • So tonight I met up with a group of friends for a bachelorette party at a local restaurant. I was just meeting them for the dinner portion of the evening. I walked into the restaurant and the hostess said, "omg like don't have your baby here in the restaurant!" Umm yes I'm huge, but not that big. Then because no one was there yet she told me I could go have a drink in the bar then proceeded to laugh and say well, I guess not. Ugh I was disgusted. While I waited she asked if I was having a boy or a girl , I said one of each and she said oh I just knew you were having twins you're huge!! Some people have no filter.

  • People keep telling me "any day now!" How about a few months from now. Most people assume I'm about to pop and when they find out I'm due the end of May they are shocked and ask if it's twins! The say strange things like " you're huge!" Thanks?!!!
This is like a daily event. 6 people stopped me in the food store yesterday!!! (One lady giving out samples gave me a bigger piece of pineapple upside down cake. I liked her!)
I've only gained weight in my belly so I think it makes it look bigger. I'm measuring exactly on point!!!

Grocery store worker stocking produce: "Looks like someone has been spending too much time in the bakery!"
Me: *looks at dude disbelievingly while he laughs at how hilarious he is*

  • The set up: Yesterday after church, Beb's running a muck around the church hall, I sit down and my mom is "watching her". I look up and Beb's reaching for something on the food table while my mom is chit chatting. I waddle over to address the situation, conversation follows:
Mom: oh, this is my daughter.  This is [women at church].
WAC: to me - your daughter is a doll.
    Me: thank you
WAC gives my mom inquisitive looks and points at my belly, my mom says yes she's expecting, turns back to me
WAC: I wasn't sure if you were pregnant or just fat.

WTF lady???  Not something you say to anyone, ever. Pregnant or not.
I was stunned. Good thing my kid took off so I could chase her and not answer.

Wow @danabsd, so sorry that she said that! What a b*tch. I've gotten that too and it's so freaking unnecessary and rude!
  • I got a new one today; at work I was talking to a woman I don't know very well and I said something about being 7 months pregnant and she looked me up and down with a shocked look on her face and said "Wow by looking at you I thought you were supposed to have had your baby by now."

Thanks for making me feel huge, lady.

  • Ugh got so pissed at my coworker today I immediately thought of this thread to post on. I was in court and we walked out together to the elevator. At the same time a father and his 5-ish daughter approached the elevator. No one pushed the button and it was like a game of chicken going for the button. It was 4pm, we are swamped and I have 0 patience so in pushed the button. My coworker freaked out "omg she wanted to push the button!" dad didnt say anything and girlie wasnt making any movements to push it. So coworker follows up by saying to dad, "I'm sorry, she doesn't have any kids yet and didn't realize pushing the button is such a big deal." Btw this lady is like 34 and doesn't have any kids either. Ugh I was livid.
