Re: The thread of all threads!

  • So this damn drainage cold crap hit me and DH now. This morning, in our queen size bed, we had me, DH, J, and our bulldog all crammed together. I was hoping J would want to stay in bed all day, but no such luck.

She didn't go back to Italy, did she?
I dont believe so. Shes going to fight the charges again.
She drives me crazy. DH and I were talking about this. From the stories on the news we've heard about her, a part of us thinks she did it.

  • Has anyone used Care.com? The only babysitters we have are my parents. We already use them to watch LO on the days I work. We're looking for someone in our area and care.com was recommended to me.

@wasnotwas your lover boy is in Jimmy Kimmel now.

@gigglejiggle How long did your baby boy cry? Did/ Does your guy wake up in the middle of the night as well? One of these days I'm going to get my guy squared away on his night time sleep. I'm always curious what people are dealing with when they institute CIO.
  • So we tried CIO...I let him cry/fuss for 5 minutes. I went in after the 5 minutes to soothe him and calm him down. He wouldn't calm down the entire time I was in there. Is he not ready for this? My SO is in there now trying to soothe him but he isn't having much luck either. LO is still fussing.

  • @coloeann31 that's one thing I've never really understood - how you're supposed to go in every so often to "soothe without picking up". Am I the only one who doesn't understand how this works? Of course I want him to know I am there and haven't abandoned him but he cries harder if he knows I'm there and not picking him up. Therefore, this method does zero soothing for any of us.

When I worked with him on his daytime naps I basically did a modified Ferber method but did touch him and kiss him- but made it very brief and business-like.
  • @funkyphoenix Grayson won't even attempt to soothe if we don't pick him up. My SO finally got him calmed down. I've just decided to sleep in the bed in his room with him to get him used to his room and then we'll try the crib again. I know I'm failing at all this but I don't know what else to do...

  • I'm up with wakeup #4 tonight.  WTF?!?

I started to drop a feeding during the day and I can feel a dip in my supply as a result (expected and desired).   I think when I nurse him at night there isn't his usual amount of milk waiting for him, so the all night buffet is his only solution. I think I'm going to start with 2 ounces of BM in a bottle tonight before boob.  Ughhh!

  • @funkyphoenix we can get away with just letting him hold our hands from outside the crib, stroking his face and hair, and an occasional shhhh

  • @micabush,I am sure that must be super difficult, but Men that were happy in their marriage tend to move on quickly after their spouse dies. It seems odd, but I think it is just to huge of a void for them.

  • Last night SUCKED! I keep blaming it on teething, but his guns look the same - two bumps below the gums on the bottom. I am glad my kid can't talk because today I am using all the bad words.

  • Laundry question:
A coworker passed along a bunch if clothes her grandsons had outgrown which is really awesome since my LO is going through sizes like crazy. However, we always do fragrance free detergent because both DH and LO have really sensitive skin. The clothes smell really strongly from either detergent or fabric softener. I've put them through the wash 3 times and they still smell. Any ideas for getting rid of it?

  • @numbersgirl08 Thank you! So when you went in every 5-15 minutes for the hour you were just talking to her for a bit then leaving? Did your LO seem more worked up by you being in the room or did it help calm her?

I have to second numbersgirl on the troublesome tots site. I know I've said that like a thousand times, but it works and I really want others to have a good night's sleep.  She actually recommends the extinction (Weissbluth) method over Ferber, but you can do either.  We found that E seemed so much more upset every time we would come back and then leave, but it was too hard not to go check and console.  I think she says to only reassure for 15 seconds max, but that not going in at all probably results in less crying overall.

Yup, I just talked to her and said "Hey honey, I'm right here, you are just fine.  Please go to sleep - I know you can do it!" and then I would leave.  15-30 seconds max and no touching.  Sometimes she got more worked up, sometimes she didn't.  To be honest, there were definitely moments I thought "this isn't going to work.  I'm going to have the one baby who would cry forever" and then all of a sudden I heard her stop and whimper and then I heard her sucking on her fingers and then SILENCE!  I did a little dance.  I didn't think it would stick but it did!  Also, be consistent.  I recommend doing that for going to sleep and at night time wake ups, if LO is already weaned from night feedings.

Okay, gotcha. I was curious as to how she responded to your check- ins. I'm going to start doing this soon for putting Ben to sleep at night. At night we do bath (every other night), lotion, jammies then bedtime bottle. Most times he falls asleep by the end of his bottle. When we lay him in his crib, sometimes he wakes and fusses for a bit, but falls back asleep fairly quickly. Other times he wakes upon transfer and cries hard until picked up and held until he falls asleep again. If I notice that he is fighting me when I hold him, I just put him back in the crib bc he obviously doesn't want me necessarily. He is just fighting sleep.

On another note, we are back to one nightly feeding and haven't night weaned yet so Im not sure how to incorporate this here. There are occasions where he wakes and starts to cry only a few hours after going down. At that point I don't allow him to eat and try to soothe without picking up. Typically he falls back to sleep after a couple minutes. With his one nightly feeding, he sucks down all 6 oz and goes right back to sleep. I just can't tell whether he really has to have this feeding or if it's just habit. Therefore not sure if I should try to wean yet... He gets appx 30 oz of formula without including his middle of he night bottle, plus a little solids for breakfast and lunch.
