I had a friend who did that, has 2 babies and smoked weed when she was pregnant with both of them, reasoning for continuing to smoke with the 2nd? "My son is much calmer than other children and I contribute that to my smoking pot"..so now not only did she smoke while she was pregnant, she smokes in front of them too. She wonders why her son smears poop all over her walls, but as long as he's calm as he's doing it...
Needless to say we aren't friends anymore.
See people like that...should not be allowed to bring children into this world...geez! That is crazy..
sweet jesus... my husbands cousin smeared poop all over the wall next to her crib when she was a baby, and she was never exposed to marijuana. lots of babies and toddlers do this because hey, there's art supplies in your diaper!
case closed.
Wow take it down a notch lol it's a jab at her parenting not the little boy..it's not his fault
Those people are extremely ignorant to the fact of what that can do to a baby and their development. I wasn't trying to conceive but as soon as I found out a few weeks along, I stopped socially drinking. It terrifies me what that may have done in the first few weeks but since I didn't know there was nothing more I could have done. I'm just glad I wasn't acting like I was in college and drinking and getting hammered everynight. But that is one thing I am and would be afraid. I can't stand people who think it's ok to continue to mutilate not only their bodies but their baby's.
so what does it do?
i've researched this pretty extensively, and i have found no study that conclusively shows it does anything. i honestly wish they'd legalize it so that someone could do the proper research.
I am going to go with what I think is common sense here & say that if a substance impairs my ability to think/act... I don't need a study to tell me that it is something I should not be using while pregnant.
Wow. Unfortunately we see babies in the NICU with drugs in their little bodies. It's fine with the moms make that decision, but the baby has no choice. Seeing babies go through those withdraws is horrible and disturbing. If people only knew...
ok, seriously... what does weed do? have you ever really seen a baby have marijuana withdrawal?
Weed does the same thing to your BABY as it does to YOU! Weed messes with your BRAIN...what do you think it would do your babies brain when it's attempting to GROW!!!!!
Bottom line...it's BAD for you and so are cigarettes...and it would be very irresponsible.
well, i quit cold turkey when i got my bfp, but i find it more disturbing that in texas, you can get 20 years for smoking once while pregnant. that's ridiculous. there is no evidence that it does anything... i would just imagine it restricts oxygen the same way cigarettes do (that's why i stopped), but no one would lock a pregnant woman up for 20 years for smoking a cigarette.
For smoking a cigarette? I remember hearing that Texas made it a felony (2-20 years) for smoking marijuana while pregnant...and now cigarettes too? Interesting.
*facepalm

i'm seriously asking.
Relax. Your OP was just worded oddly; you were talking about quitting cold turkey and then immediately followed with 20 years for "smoking once" while pregnant - no direct reference to marijuana. Reading quickly, I didn't catch you were making the jump from smoking to "smoking marijuana."
To answer your question, I have to think that it a most rare circumstance would a mother actually get sentenced to 20 years. Or any jail time, for that matter; I find it easier to imagine that if a child tests positive for marijuana at birth, the mother would have to answer to social services rather than the local DA. But who knows. Stranger things happen in the justice system.
the thread was about marijuana, so i didn't know i had to specify. i'm sorry i confused you.
it just bothers me that that law would be on the books, at all. i bet it is rare to get the full term, but at the same time, it screams "selective enforcement" to me. my aunt works for cps in tx, and believe me, she has better things to do with her time than bust someone who had a joint before they gave birth.
I didn't quote where it was asked, but someone wanted to know about effects/withdrawals of marijuana and newborns; I'm no expert, but a really quick google found this:

pre-natal marijuana exposure is the gift that keeps on giving.

Um, it's also not illegal to have cigarettes in your possession. It is to have weed. Big difference.
duh... but i'm wondering why it's illegal when no one has ever died from marijuana and cigarettes kill tons of people.
in california they tried to pass a law recently that said you couldn't smoke cigarettes in a car with a child under 7. i voted against it because i didn't think that was reasonable... would kids have to carry ids so the arresting officer could tell if they were 6 or 7? it might be well-intentioned, but utterly unenforceable. and tell me that isn't a totally arbitrary age limit.
Have you not heard of what 2nd hand smoke does to people, especially kids? My brother was on breathing machines for a year as an infant because my dad smoked around him. I had asthma well into my teen years because my dad smoked around me.
um yeah... and that was cigarettes, right?
can you say a single true thing about marijuana? i only brought up the cigarette law because you said cigarettes were legal and marijuana wasn't.
Actually, you brought up cigarettes in your first post. Nice try.
But like others have said, marijuana is illegal so there's no possibility of doing tests on it to actually see what it does to you or the baby. But if you were around someone that's high and you weren't high yourself, you'd see how big of a fvcking idiot it makes them.

yeah. no. are you seriosuly advocating that a baby will be fine if the mother chooses to smoke pot while pregnant?

"ok, seriously... what does weed do? have you ever really seen a baby have marijuana withdrawal"
I see where the confusion can come in, as there really haven't been studies done because the drug is illegal. From personal experience, my niece smoked weed throughout her pregnancy with my nephew. She did not drink or engage in other risky activities. He was born with a myriad of neurological disorders. When his brain scans were done shortly after birth, they found that his brain showed similar function to a person who was currently high. He had severe difficulties eating. His doctors attribute many of his disabilities to the weed consumption, but as you said, no research has or can be done ethically because weed is illegal. He is 7 now and functions as if he were 3-4.
There will always be people who say "I did it and my child is fine", but why chance it?

This law needed a cutoff age limit so they picked 6/7, but the point was to be able to ticket parents blowing smoke around their cars with teeny tiny babies and toddlers- kids OBVIOUSLY not to the age of 6 or 7. It goes along the same line of "We will ID anyone under the age of 41" or whatever when purchasing alcohol, it just needs a reasonable cutoff. IMO 6 or 7 is still under the age of being able to make your own decision NOT to breathe in that cancerous crap, but I can see where they picked that age I suppose.

Research on the long-term effects of marijuana abuse indicates some changes in the brain similar to those seen after long-term abuse of other major drugs. For example, cannabinoid withdrawal in chronically exposed animals leads to an increase in the activation of the stress-response system3 and changes in the activity of nerve cells containing dopamine.4 Dopamine neurons are involved in the regulation of motivation and reward, and are directly or indirectly affected by all drugs of abuse.

and if I am correct...the girl who is arguing with everyone about it not being bad actually said that she "researched it" and there was nothing stating that it was bad for the baby....you fail.

How do you KNOW that no one has ever died from smoking marijuana? It's not legal so there would be no research stating that....it kills your lungs JUST like cigarettes so i'm sure over time it would kill you too...
My brother is a total loser that smokes weed often. When he found out about my pregnancy, he told me "You should smoke weed. It makes for a well rounded child."
*bangs head against desk*
I don't understand how people can have this logic. [that it isn't harmful to the baby] Marijuana may be a plant, but the THC is what affects YOUR brain and gets you high. Do they not think of what it does for a developing baby in utero? Not to mention the smoke. By smoking, even without the THC, they're depriving the baby of oxygen, leading to the potential for an array of health issues for the baby.
When I told my brother things like this, he will respond with something along the lines of "Yeah well J smoked during her pregnancy and W is just fine!" Uh yeah, he's just fine NOW.... Just wait until he really has to use his cognitive thinking portion of his brain later in life. Come talk to me then.
maybe he'll be a lawyer like my husband. summa *** laude, baby.
I knew a couple that adopted a baby that was affected by the mother smoking marijuana throughout her pregnancy. He was severely premature and underweight, barely escaping a stillbirth. He had traces of marijuana in his blood...it's just disgusting that some people would rather think of themselves when they're pregnant and not the life inside of them that their body is supporting. I'm not saying selfishness as in having a chocolate shake once in awhile. I'm talking the kind of selfishness that drives people to continue smoking/doing drugs/drinking alcohol while they are pregnant. My husband's ex-girlfriend almost lost their baby because she was smoking throughout her pregnancy; her 20th week, she started bleeding and almost had a miscarriage. Her doctor was like, "Um, here's a tip: STOP SMOKING." She almost killed her baby because she wasn't willing to put a cigarette down for 9 months.
And marijuana greatly impairs your judgement. My high school class's valedictorian blew a stop sign on a country road, T-boned a couple going to church one Sunday morning, and killed 3 people in a car accident because he was high. This was a guy going to college to be a doctor. I don't think intellect has anything to do with how your body responds to substances being put into it; especially drugs.

It's because cigarettes aren't illegal!!!! WEED IS AN ILLEGAL SUBSTANCE!
As a former pot-head (I gave it up when I decided to try to conceive), I can tell you that no matter what your feelings on weed, under no circumstances should you be exposing your baby to it! It's the same with alcohol, cigarettes and any other mind or mood altering substances - legal or not.
It's 9 months. NINE FRIGGIN' MONTHS. All women should have the self control to step away from the drugs, booze and cigarettes for a short nine months.
And yes, I'm putting alcohol in there as well because I give the side-eye to ANYONE who says "I'm having a glass of wine and it's okay cause it's just one" while pregnant. It's BS. If it alters YOUR MOOD, it effects YOUR BABY.
Wow. Unfortunately we see babies in the NICU with drugs in their little bodies. It's fine with the moms make that decision, but the baby has no choice. Seeing babies go through those withdraws is horrible and disturbing. If people only knew...

So you think that because it's a baby, it can't have withdrawls, just like an adult would?! Please, don't ever smoke marijuana again, you've already killed too many brain cells.
ok seriously... find me one case of marijuana withdrawal. just one. i didn't say any such thing... i asked the poster what she's seen that relates to the discussion. i am scared to death of every drug except for marijuana, because marijuana is no worse than alcohol, according to every piece of research i've ever seen on the subject. it's not even as bad as cigarettes.

No prob; not confusing - just odd phrasing.
Perhaps there was a
particular impetus or event that spurned that particular law that speaks
to the severity of the sentence? Or more likely, that's just the range
of that particular felony in TX, i.e., TX lawmakers said this statute
will be considered this "class" of felony, and that class of felony
carries a penalty of two to 20 years. I'm sure your aunt could probably
shed some light on its enforcement. I don't envy her job
All I have to say is that my sister smoked both during her pregnancy and is still in denial that the smoking was the reason why he was born at 25 weeks. HELLO its possible. Now he is deaf and has vision issues all at the age of 1.
She even went as far as to continue to smoke after he was born with her BF and got yelled at several times for smelling like smoke around the other babies in the NICU. I do have to say this is why we have never been close.
Um, a few things for you judgy mcjudgersons...
You don't have withdrawl from marijuana nor is it addictive because it stores in your fat cells and you naturally detoxify ~ that's why it stays in your system for 30 days vs. cocaine or other drugs which leave your system in less than a week. I can think of a lot of prescription drugs that are given throughout pregnancy that would be a whole lot more dangerous!
Forward thinking doctors do prescribe it for m/s just as they do for cancer/AIDS treatment
Studies have been conducted in countries where it is legal/decriminalized and there is no evidence that it harms unborn babies, causes developmental delays, or anything else. Many studies actually show that users are more detail oriented and efficient in their performance. For posters to use their 'loser' friends as an example is ludicrous ~ your friend would probably still be a loser without pot, it's just something for them to do because they're bored. Many of you would be shocked to find out how many successful professionals partake on a regular basis.
Smoking issue holds no weight as it can be ingested in in other forms
It is legal in 13 states
That being said, it is a selfish act that should be avoided during pregnancy, just like any other recreational drug.

as you can see, i'm actually citing research for my position. i guess that's a symptom of marijuana withdrawal...
You must be really dense....there are at least 2 posts in here that have acutal research on the subject...apparently you are just trying to justify your actions....

and i suppose you never drink alcohol? because drunks are pretty darn annoying too, but no one arrests a pregnant woman for having a beer.
btw, that second link actually shows that marijuana users are not getting cancer. evidently they study it often enough for a site like this to exist:

Not in MA...you get a fine, same as littering. I'm of the camp that marijuana shouldn't be demonized though. I don't think any drugs should be used during pregnancy though, legal or not, unless they are necessary. I think I've only taken Tylenol twice.

I don't have a study to cite, but my SIL who works at a hospital said she saw this tiny baby that was born 3 weeks early due to a pothead mom. He was even tinier than most would be being "just" 3 weeks early.

I have no problems with non-pregnant people smoking pot and actually, think it should be legal. But as far as pregnant women smoking cigs or joints, THC and nicotine both cross the placenta!
It is not illegal in Oregon (we have reduced possession of less than an oz to only the equiv. of a traffic ticket with a fine). We also have vast support for medical marijuana in Oregon. That being said, I do not smoke weed and think anyone that does while pregnant is selfish and stupid. I used to enjoy happy hour with my friends every Friday, and in the 50's ladies used to even have a cocktail while pregnant, I would NEVER do it.

there are actually a lot of studies and tests that have been done showing that pot doesn't harm anyone. i've posted quite a few of them. i'd rather be informed, instead of a fvcking idiot who only posts her opinions.

Your self confession made me giggle. I was a big social drinker before finding out I was pregnant, and in fact, drinking the first few weeks before I knew. I feel awful sometimes thinking that I exposed LO to that alcohol, but nothing I can do now. I have not had a drop of ANYTHING since BFP, and don't plan to, because like you said, it's only nine months. I can sacrifice nine months for a lifetime of a healthy baby.
It says that the links have not yet been established...because its not LEGAL so how are they supposed to study it??
Why are YOU so sure? I have been around people when they smoke and they are complete idiots....you are killing brain cells and any kind of smoking restricts oxygen.
I can guarantee that if it were ever made legal, there would be test results proving that it is harmful..there is just not enough data yet.
and i suppose you never drink alcohol? because drunks are pretty darn annoying too, but no one arrests a pregnant woman for having a beer.
btw, that second link actually shows that marijuana users are not getting cancer. evidently they study it often enough for a site like this to exist:
yes I drank alcohol..but I also know how to cut myself off before I become a blubbering idiot. I'm sorry that sitting around eating EVERYTHING in sight all day doesn't sound like much fun for me. Pot heads are not only annoying but you can't have a conversation with them...they are complete idiots on that stuff.....
And you can have your own opinion and try to defend yourself...i'm still sticking with anyone who smokes pot while pregnant is a f-ing moron and you posting articles trying to prove to me it's not bad is not going to change my mind....I think you are VERY wrong.
Re: Smoking weed while pregnant...
Wow take it down a notch lol it's a jab at her parenting not the little boy..it's not his fault
I am going to go with what I think is common sense here & say that if a substance impairs my ability to think/act... I don't need a study to tell me that it is something I should not be using while pregnant.
Weed does the same thing to your BABY as it does to YOU! Weed messes with your BRAIN...what do you think it would do your babies brain when it's attempting to GROW!!!!!
Bottom line...it's BAD for you and so are cigarettes...and it would be very irresponsible.
the thread was about marijuana, so i didn't know i had to specify. i'm sorry i confused you.
it just bothers me that that law would be on the books, at all. i bet it is rare to get the full term, but at the same time, it screams "selective enforcement" to me. my aunt works for cps in tx, and believe me, she has better things to do with her time than bust someone who had a joint before they gave birth.
This exactly.
I didn't quote where it was asked, but someone wanted to know about effects/withdrawals of marijuana and newborns; I'm no expert, but a really quick google found this:
"Their newborns can experience mild withdrawal and some nervous system effects. And the toxic effects of pre-natal marijuana exposure is the gift that keeps on giving. Effects are often not readily apparent in newborns. Still, psychologists who have studied these babies have found neurological delays. Likewise, few negative effects are apparent between the ages of 1 and 3. But a woman shouldn't be fooled if she has heard of a study where the very young kids show no ill effects. Pre-natal marijuana exposure effects what are called "higher cognitive functions" which don't express themselves until later. At four years old, decreases in verbal ability and memory can be found in those kid exposed to pre-natal marijuana use. At ages 5 and 6, more problems with attention span are found. Needless to say, none of this sets the kid up for a great experience in grade school. At ages 9-12, the same problems persist and compound. Pre-natally exposed to marijuana kids have lower impulse control, don't do as well on certain types of analysis and reasoning tasks, and have lower reading and language skills."

Just my humble opinion.
I'm thinking I'd get the fear and flip the eff out if I were high during labor! Lol.
Here is your study for you: https://www.drugabuse.gov/infofacts/marijuana.html
Research on the long-term effects of marijuana abuse indicates some changes in the brain similar to those seen after long-term abuse of other major drugs. For example, cannabinoid withdrawal in chronically exposed animals leads to an increase in the activation of the stress-response system3 and changes in the activity of nerve cells containing dopamine.4 Dopamine neurons are involved in the regulation of motivation and reward, and are directly or indirectly affected by all drugs of abuse.
no, it doesn't.

why are you so sure?
maybe he'll be a lawyer like my husband. summa *** laude, baby.
It says that the links have not yet been established...because its not LEGAL so how are they supposed to study it??

It's because cigarettes aren't illegal!!!! WEED IS AN ILLEGAL SUBSTANCE!
As a former pot-head (I gave it up when I decided to try to conceive), I can tell you that no matter what your feelings on weed, under no circumstances should you be exposing your baby to it! It's the same with alcohol, cigarettes and any other mind or mood altering substances - legal or not.

ok seriously... find me one case of marijuana withdrawal. just one. i didn't say any such thing... i asked the poster what she's seen that relates to the discussion. i am scared to death of every drug except for marijuana, because marijuana is no worse than alcohol, according to every piece of research i've ever seen on the subject. it's not even as bad as cigarettes.
https://www.drugpolicy.org/marijuana/factsmyths/
as you can see, i'm actually citing research for my position. i guess that's a symptom of marijuana withdrawal...
No prob; not confusing - just odd phrasing.

Perhaps there was a particular impetus or event that spurned that particular law that speaks to the severity of the sentence? Or more likely, that's just the range of that particular felony in TX, i.e., TX lawmakers said this statute will be considered this "class" of felony, and that class of felony carries a penalty of two to 20 years. I'm sure your aunt could probably shed some light on its enforcement.
You must be really dense....there are at least 2 posts in here that have acutal research on the subject...apparently you are just trying to justify your actions....
and i suppose you never drink alcohol? because drunks are pretty darn annoying too, but no one arrests a pregnant woman for having a beer.

that's why i'm sure. i'm not over here making this stuff up... i'm actually looking up the data. oh, what a silly pothead i am.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/25/AR2006052501729.html
Not in MA...you get a fine, same as littering. I'm of the camp that marijuana shouldn't be demonized though. I don't think any drugs should be used during pregnancy though, legal or not, unless they are necessary. I think I've only taken Tylenol twice.
Bar tab = $156,000, Bus to Foxwoods = $0, Puking in the Stanley Cup = Priceless
Agreed!
yep. you put out there what I was too lazy to type
DS born 8/2010 - preliminary stages of SN int'l adoption - fur mama to 2 shelter dogs; cloth diapering, babywearing, EBFing mama
I agree with you on all accounts.
uh, i used to be around high people quite frequently before i started smoking, since i started in college. and yeah, they can be annoying. oh noes! and seriously, cigs are worse in that they are more addictive and more harmful than marijuana. so why are you folks harping on marijuana? the only reason i brought up cigarettes was to show that weirdness.
there are actually a lot of studies and tests that have been done showing that pot doesn't harm anyone. i've posted quite a few of them. i'd rather be informed, instead of a fvcking idiot who only posts her opinions.
