Smoking weed while pregnant...

I got on my facebook and two of my friends were in an all out fight about if "smoking weed while pregnant is safe for the baby..."

One of the girls said..."I smoked my ENTIRE pregnancy and I still smoke all the time, that doesn't make me a bad mom and my baby is really smart!"

:::bangs head against desk:::

I'm sorry if you are one of those people that think smoking pot while pregnant is okay but I find it disturbing.

I wanted to slap her...people like her should not be allowed to bring children into this world...there should be some kind of IQ test!

Rant over...

Yeah...pretty much my reaction..I had to read it about 4 times before I realized she had REALLY just said that...

  • I 100% agree with you!! It makes me angry when I see people smoking anything around children. I don't know what I would do if I saw someone smoking weed around a child.

  • you need a new friend.
  • well, i quit cold turkey when i got my bfp, but i find it more disturbing that in texas, you can get 20 years for smoking once while pregnant. that's ridiculous. there is no evidence that it does anything... i would just imagine it restricts oxygen the same way cigarettes do (that's why i stopped), but no one would lock a pregnant woman up for 20 years for smoking a cigarette.

  • Oh my.

My MIL admits to smoking weed while pregnant...DH is smart, but whenever he does something a little "ditsy" I always tell him it's evident his Mother puffed while pregnant.

  • Those people are extremely ignorant to the fact of what that can do to a baby and their development. I wasn't trying to conceive but as soon as I found out a few weeks along, I stopped socially drinking. It terrifies me what that may have done in the first few weeks but since I didn't know there was nothing more I could have done. I'm just glad I wasn't acting like I was in college and drinking and getting hammered everynight. But that is one thing I am and would be afraid. I can't stand people who think it's ok to continue to mutilate not only their bodies but their baby's.
  • I wish, could you imagine how great that would be for the m/s and especially while in labor.  Not so good for the snacking...
  • I had a friend who did that, has 2 babies and smoked weed when she was pregnant with both of them, reasoning for continuing to smoke with the 2nd? "My son is much calmer than other children and I contribute that to my smoking pot"..so now not only did she smoke while she was pregnant, she smokes in front of them too. She wonders why her son smears poop all over her walls, but as long as he's calm as he's doing it...

Needless to say we aren't friends anymore.

    so what does it do?

i've researched this pretty extensively, and i have found no study that conclusively shows it does anything.  i honestly wish they'd legalize it so that someone could do the proper research.

  • That's awful!  I have to admit. In high school there wasn't much else to do around my town.. but I haven't even smoked cigarettes in probably 5+ years?

It makes me uncomfortable to be around someone who even smells like cigarettes..

as for your friend smoking? you can't seriously tell the effects that smoking weed has on you until you quit for a long period of time.

As you realize what normal feels like.. you realize just what its done to your mind and your memory.  I can't imagine what long term effects it would have on your baby.

not even in texas. why is it better to sentence a kid to 20 years without a mother if she smokes a joint?

    i'm seriously asking.

duh... but i'm wondering why it's illegal when no one has ever died from marijuana and cigarettes kill tons of people.

in california they tried to pass a law recently that said you couldn't smoke cigarettes in a car with a child under 7. i voted against it because i didn't think that was reasonable... would kids have to carry ids so the arresting officer could tell if they were 6 or 7? it might be well-intentioned, but utterly unenforceable. and tell me that isn't a totally arbitrary age limit.

sweet jesus... my husbands cousin smeared poop all over the wall next to her crib when she was a baby, and she was never exposed to marijuana. lots of babies and toddlers do this because hey, there's art supplies in your diaper!

Have you not heard of what 2nd hand smoke does to people, especially kids? My brother was on breathing machines for a year as an infant because my dad smoked around him. I had asthma well into my teen years because my dad smoked around me.

Relax. Your OP was just worded oddly; you were talking about quitting cold turkey and then immediately followed with 20 years for "smoking once" while pregnant - no direct reference to marijuana.  Reading quickly, I didn't catch you were making the jump from smoking to "smoking marijuana."

To answer your question, I have to think that it a most rare circumstance would a mother actually get sentenced to 20 years.  Or any jail time, for that matter; I find it easier to imagine that if a child tests positive for marijuana at birth, the mother would have to answer to social services rather than the local DA.  But who knows.  Stranger things happen in the justice system.

How do you KNOW that no one has ever died from smoking marijuana? It's not legal so there would be no research stating that....it kills your lungs JUST like cigarettes so i'm sure over time it would kill you too...

I thought I read somewhere that some doctors actually prescribe it for morning sickness.

My brother is a total loser that smokes weed often. When he found out about my pregnancy, he told me "You should smoke weed. It makes for a well rounded child."

    *bangs head against desk*

I don't understand how people can have this logic. [that it isn't harmful to the baby] Marijuana may be a plant, but the THC is what affects YOUR brain and gets you high. Do they not think of what it does for a developing baby in utero? Not to mention the smoke. By smoking, even without the THC, they're depriving the baby of oxygen, leading to the potential for an array of health issues for the baby.

When I told my brother things like this, he will respond with something along the lines of "Yeah well J smoked during her pregnancy and W is just fine!" Uh yeah, he's just fine NOW.... Just wait until he really has to use his cognitive thinking portion of his brain later in life. Come talk to me then.
