Vaccines are NOT 100 percent effective

It really annoys me when people say, "if your kid is vaccinated, why do you care if others don't vax their kids?" Because vaccines are only around 90 percent effective. 1 in 10 children who is vaxed will not be immune and is relying on herd immunity to stay safe. When others choose not to vax, without medical reason, they ARE putting vaccinated children at risk. Although a non-vaxed child is far more likely to get sick in an outbreak, the majority of cases is in vaccinated people, because vaccines are not 100 percent effective and vaccinated people make up a larger percentage of the population. The more people who choose not to vax, the more vaccinated people are put at risk too. These diseases are serious and can cause heartbreaking illness. So that's why I care when others don't vaccinate.

I agree. I know it may be an unpopular opinion. People now weren't around when things like whooping cough, measles, etc. were killing children everywhere so they can't possibly know how they would feel if their child came down with one of these things. There are vaccines for a reason.

I think those who chose not to vaccinate for any reason other than a valid medical reason are being very irresponsible to the rest of society.

Just think of Polio...it is no longer common because of vaccinations. I can not imagine if a disease like that spread again.

I will say that I might not get why people choose not to vax, but I'm not going to argue with them over their choice. What really pisses me off is the ridiculous justifications that come along with that choice. "Polio isn't around now" and "vax'd kids are safe so why do you care?" Please.

it doesn't even have to be so far back as oregon trail. my mom says she remembers people fighting polio when she was just a kid. she says it was horrific and if people had seen a glimpse of that they'd think twice about not-vaxing their kids.

Could you imagine not having vaccines and being in a house with 5 of your kids and one gets the measles, polo, etc. I just cannot imagine. The poor Indians and small pox.
Has any one of you actually research vaccines and VPD's extensively? It sure doesn't sound like it.
I'm not going into all the details because your minds are made up before even knowing facts from all sides of the arguments. If anyone is truly interested, you can PM me and I have a lot of info I can share. Immunizations do not provide the protection (especially lifelong) that people think they are getting.
I have read the vaccine book. All of DD's vaccines and preservative free. It is bold of you to accuse all of us of not researching. How could you think I wouldn't research vaccines extensively with two step sons on the spectrum? I did and what I found out was nothing about them is as bad as my DD dying from polio or measles.
i would LOVE to know where you did your "research." i find it laughable that you think that those of us who follow the standard AAP guidelines are uneducated on vaccines. i have done plenty of research on the subject. i bet you think my pediatricians also don't know what they're talking about....

You know my doctor told me hey you don't want them fine. He said the office actually loses money on them because ins doesn't cover the full cost and they can't charge us extra or it cause people not to get them.
Um, yes...as someone who has been to medical school, I'd say I did more than enough research on the matter...

I worked with immune compromised children that CANNOT be vaccinated. The immune systems of these children are so craptastic that they WILL get ill from the vaccine. These children, unfortunately, have to rely on other childrens parents to vaccinate their children so they can minimize their risk of getting diseases. The parents that choose not to vaccinate are actually putting the children I worked with at risk as well as their own children.
We started recommending parents keep their children out of daycare and other such areas if at all possible because of this "trend" not to vaccinate. We have always recommended they don't leave the house unless necessary in the winter.

By the way, the measles death rate declined by 99% before the vaccine was even recommended.
As for polio--it was decreasing, too, and there is now evidence that many cases diagnosed as polio were actually cases of guillaine-barre syndrome (which my brother actually was a victim of thanks to a vaccine). FDR actually had guillaine-barre and not polio. There is a ton of info out there on polio, and it's very enlightening.
I was discussing this with someone earlier. There will always be medical reasons people can't get them. That is fine, they have always been there and it is understandable. It is just a scary combination with people who are doing it just because.
