Baby Names

What names are you considering for your little bub? Any names you love but that your partner vetoed? Tell us what you love about those names or any backstory you have for them.

(Hope it's okay that I started this so early. We've been chatting so many names in our household lately so I thought others might be in the same boat already.)

Re: Baby Names

  • Since we don't know the sex of the baby yet we have two lists running. With our son we didn't find out ahead of time so we went in with a list of three names each and then decided from those when we met him (we went with Theodore).

Right now our top names are:

    Audrey
    Annika
    Beatrice
    Isabel
    Genevieve
    Frederick (Freddie)
    Charles (Charlie)
    Buster

I keep suggesting other names too but they've been vetoed. I think DH is pretty attached to the existing list so he's stubborn about anything new 😂

I do really love Zoë, but he has a friend with a Zoë, and that was a hard no for me to accept. Also love Oliver, but also sadly vetoed. I love a lot of nature names (Hazel, Aspen, Violet, Forrest) but sadly they typically don't work with our last name.

  • @krthouse I love all of those names - you have so many options you agree on!
  • @sandy5693 we definitely each have our favourites within that list, so we'll see what happens when baby is born! When Teddy was born I immediately vetoed a name from the shortlist and DH was not going to fight me on it because he had just watched me labour for 60 hours 😂
  • @krthouse that’s how we are too - we have a decent list but if we were both going to rank them it wouldn’t be in the same order! So it will be interesting to see what happens
  • We’ve had a boy name agreed on since 2017 but our babies keep end up being girls! If we have a boy we’re all set with Conor. But if it’s another girl (and my gut is that it’s a girl) we’re going to have a heck of a time. We gravitate toward Scottish and Irish names due to our heritage, so leaning in that direction.
  • @krthouse Isla is the name of my youngest!
  • We don't have a set of names. Haha
Our first we were pretty set on her name (Lorelai) but had back ups just in case. Our second was another girl and we were pretty much in love with her name since I was pregnant with our first.
Our third was a boy and it threw us for a loop because we were expecting another girl. We had no name until we saw him. We vetoed everything the other one suggested. We saw him and both immediately said "Desmond".  I'm a bit obsessed with names. I track the change in popularity, meanings etc. So far we have a German origin, Greek origin, and an Irish origin. My husband wants to go back to Greek this time but I'm just going to wait and figure it out.
  • I'm curious if anyone has any good tips for finding names that aren't popular, but aren't super unique either? What resources have you all been using? I find that whenever I try any of the websites with lists the names are either so so so popular that I know so many people/children with that name OR so completely out there.

Just curious if anyone has anything that they like! I started using the BabyName app. My husband is calling it "Tinder for Baby Names". LOL. Just curious if there is anything else that you all like to use!
  • @missingwine I use the SSA website for inspiration! You can look at up to the top 1000

    https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/

And yes we used the baby name app last time and once we know the sex we will probably use it again just to make sure we aren’t missing a name we both like.
  • Resurrecting this thread since a lot of us are back in brainstorming mode now….
  • Now that more of you mamas know what you're having how are the name discussions going?
  • @krthouse you read my mind!
  • I feel about 70% sure about the first names for either boy or girl. Having a hard time with middle names. Our last name is two syllables and so are the first names we like. So middle I don’t want to also have two syllables because it sounds weird. I have gone insane lol
  • @egsc21 I totally think about the syllables! My son is 3 syllables, 2 syllables, 1 syllable and it flows really well. I feel like 2-1-2 or 2-3-2 works well.
  • I don't even factor in syllables. My middle daughter has four syllable first and middle names. My oldest is 3/3. Our last name is two but it's a terrible name where cock is prominent in the pronunciation so it's difficult to find something that works.
I love baby names. I've literally written research papers on it. I find the whole topic fascinating. As a result I have like 20 girls names that I would be happy with. I have approximately zero boys names. We have 17 nieces and nephews so that eliminated a lot but we didn't like any of them anyway. My husband and I are usually in agreement over just about everything and I have naming rights since I picked out names for all our kids and all our pets and I have a knack for it.
My son has three names because we originally thought he would be the last so we used all our favorite boy names on him. Whoops.
  • We have lists but I don’t think I’m ready to put any of the names out into the universe yet! Maybe once we know the sex. Our last name is a mouthful so we tend to like shorter names to go with it. Also add me to the “boy names are hard” list!
  • Boys are so hard but we are so lucky because we have only ever loved and agreed on exactly ONE boy name. We had 2 girls and this is our last so if it is a boy, settled! 😅 Phew! It’s definitely not twins so we don’t have to scramble for a 2nd boy name.

Okay I love talking baby names. We aren’t sharing the name we have set but I’m going to take this opportunity to list the many names I will never get to use bc husband vetoed or it just doesn’t work for us 🥲. My 2 girls have “boy” names so you’ll see a theme with my preferences 🤣 please tell me if one of these ends up on your list! I have pushed them so hard on my girlfriends.

Girls: my number one vetoed by husband was Savannah. I want to have a “Savvy” so bad. I think it’s the cutest nickname. Logan (Lolo), Carter, Chase, Reese, Chandler, Layne (Lane), Tyler, Baker, Parker, Sage

Boys: Husband vetoed all of these: Bowen (initials would end up BM 💩), Callam/Calum (so cute but rare), Wilder, Wyatt, Ryder, Bodhi…that’s all I can think of. So hard
  • I love hearing baby names too!  My husband and I picked out a boy first name and a girl first name years ago because we knew how much arguing would ensue and needed to get that settled  :D We're keeping it on lockdown until birth because we have a lot of opinionated family and friends.

We do need middle names and that has been more fun as it's much less pressure. Agree with those on the syllables - looking for short and easy middle names that aren't too basic.  I would love to do a family name for the middle name, but it's impossible to choose a side of the family to name it after lol
  • Oh I forgot to add in that I love the name Harrison, which was my grandmother's maiden name. I really like the idea of naming a boy in honour of a strong woman in our past. My FIL's name is Harry, so it would be too confusing, and I do really want to honour my brother Michael with the middlle name for a boy so it's definitely free if anyone wants it. Also thought for those of you struggling with boys names, that might be a great alternative approach to finding one.
  • My son is Desmond. That's the only boys name I liked. Same goes for my husband. We don't like anything else. I went onto Nameberry last night and did their baby name DNA quiz. I ended up x-ing out so many boys names they stopped recommending them. My husband is Keegan and I actually love that name but I would never do a junior situation. I also have a no repeat letter policy. All of my siblings names started with the same letter and I HATED it.
  • @krthouse I was like oh! Good idea! My grandmas maiden name is….oh, my dad’s first name. Well that’s not going to work haha. If we name a boy after any dads it would be FIL, but DH is insistent that this baby have “its own name”
  • @bows22 Could be any strong woman, or person really, you've admired in your life! A lot of last names work really well.

@krysnicole1022 I love Irish and Scottish boys names, Keegan included, but my husband does not. My nephews are Ewan and Caelan, I also love Rhys and keeping trying to sneak it onto the list to no avail. Boys names really are so hard though!
  • Well, I was just told by my (insert deprecating adjective here) husband that he absolutely did NOT agree to the name we specifically chose years ago when we thought we’d been pregnant again.
So now, instead of feeling sure we had both a boy & girl name selected, we are starting at zero and I’m irritated already 😤🤣
we named our daughter after our favorite grandmothers. Ugh. And he doesn’t want to try going through name lists or anything- I’m supposed to come up with it so he can approve it or something? But apparently it’s a hard no to Joyce
  • @krthouse I'm definitely drawn to the Irish and Scottish boy names. If I'm being completely honest then I got Desmond from Lost. He was my absolute favorite character male character on the show. My husband is aware of this and when he actually watched it (after our Desmond was born who by the way ended up having lost number birthdate and time so it was honestly perfect) he was like "oh. He is the best character. Good choice." 😂😂
  • @cfranx my husband does that! He will declare he loves a name and then when I bring it up later he's like "no. I don't like that at all." Say what now??  You loved it at one point. Grrr. I did the baby name DNA on Nameberry and we laughed really hard at how stupid the name suggestions were. Like Danger? Danger!?!? Someone please help that kid.
  • Oh and I love Rhys. I have a niece with Reese as a middle name so I wouldn't be able to use it but it's great.
  • We don’t know the sex yet but I have my favourites for a boy we both like Cody and for a girl I love the name Hiedi. We already have 2 boys Ethan and Jensen
  • I love the name Cody. I babysat a little boy names Cody when I was a teen and he was such an awesome kid.
  • I am having a boy and really like the name Adam or Wesley.  My daughter is pushing Theodore and DH keeps mentioning Jack.
  • Having a girl and were between Maeve & Keira. Convinced my hubby to love Maeve over Keira and now I’m the one flipping sides, but he’s already sold on Maeve! Ah well. I love both those names so win win.

@mcclanna I adore the name Maeve and one of my honourary little sisters is a Maeve. My husband doesn't like it as much as some of the others on our list but it's one I haven't given up on yet. Keira was also on our long list but we decided against the alliteration with our last name.
  • I love Jack as a boys name! It won't work for us with.out last name but it's so cute.
Also I love Maeve and Keira. Great names!
  • @mcclanna both of those are great. There was a Maeve in my older daughter’s infant daycare class and she was a force of nature (in the best way), so I always view it as a name for a strong lady!
  • We are having a time with boy names. Husband has vetoed most. I like Archer he says no, I like Oliver again no, the list continues. Last night he said Donovan wasn't bad. Boy names seem to be difficult this time around
  • @kelly_mom_mimi My husband keeps vetoeing Oliver too! I love it and keep trying to get it on the short list 😂
