everyone will find out what the gender of our baby is at our shower (including us) and my mom suggested having a baby pool on guessing if its a boy or girl. I don't know how this works and she didn't either.
We did one at work, but we did the baby's weight. We work in a hospital, so our coworker was delivering there. We each put in 2 dollars per guess, whoever was the closest to the weight won. I don't know how it would work if you did it with gender...

I've done them for weight, sex, and date of birth. In all cases, you fix an amount of money each person has to pay to 'buy in'. If it's weight or date, whoever guesses closest gets the whole pot. If it's sex, the correct guessers split the $$. Generally people guess by writing their name/guess on a piece of paper that goes in a hat so no one knows until the end who guessed what. Honestly, I've only ever seen it started by someone else, not the mom-to-be, but as long as participation is voluntary I think it's fine to have one at the shower.
There is a website called Preg Pool that does it all for you. It's a ten dollar buy in per person, and guessers need to have a PayPal account to put in their money and/or collect their winnings.
Of the money put in, the website takes 10%, the winner gets a percentage, and the mommy and daddy get the rest.
