  • @heybritups I'm happy to hear that everything turned out okay! The rate of false positives is not marginal for that test, and I've heard of a few other people having the same experience as you. Glad it worked out, in the end!
  • Thanks @hannahbananas11. After a crazy google sesh I found so many moms to have gone through the same thing. The doc who did the scan said she is pretty frustrated that they even offer the sequential scans because the false positive rate is so high and she deals with a lot of panicked parents when everything is fine in the end.

  • Did anyone have to go back for a second anatomy scan?
  • @bhou I almost did because the tech couldn't get a clear picture of the heart from a certain angle. Luckily baby moved just enough to allow her to get it at the end of the scan.
  • @bhou I did with my first and have been told I'll have to with this one too. They couldn't get the measurement for DS's femurs, so we went back for a second scan. This baby won't show her profile or her spine, so the tech said we'd need to come back.
  • @BourbonBiscuits Did you have to pay for a second scan, too? That would suck. At first I was thinking it'd be fun to have another chance to see the baby, but then I thought about the cost of one US, and changed my mind.
  • @hannahbananas11 YUP. Well the first time my insurance covered every scan 100%. This time I’ll have to pay like $170 for the second scan. Ughhhhh
  • I am fortunate to not have to pay for it as I am in Canada but they dont want me to come back for another 2-3 weeks for the next scan.  Was wondering why the wait as doc said baby is measuring a week earlier then expected so baby is 21 weeks instead of 20. So by the time i do this next scan could be 24 weeks!
  • that's crazy you have to pay for the repeat.. it should be a set price for all the info they need.  Is it like an hourly rate or something? My A/s took 1 hr 45 mins instead of 1 hr... I guess if I was in the states at the hour mark they'd have sent me on my way to come back for round 2?
  • i had mine this monday and everything was normal as well. my baby is a boy!💙 however i got a call a few days later saying the doctor wants to see me in 2 weeks for another ultrasound which i’m not sure why but i’m a little concerned. has anyone had this happen before?
  • @mommaofboy1 , that's strange, could you call the doctors office and ask for more information- why the need for a second u/s?  I have to have another but it's related to my placenta location (could that be it for you?).. which, they told me prior to requesting I come for a second u/s.
  • @cass06_07 yeah it’s bs. It was pretty jarring the first time I went in for an ultrasound after changing insurance and doctors because I just naively expected it to be covered and the lady said “so will you be making a good faith payment of $100 towards today’s ultrasound?” Ummm no. I sure won’t.
  • @mommaofboy1 I'd call and ask, just so you don't have to worry about it (I usually jump to the worse-case scenario). I'm also wondering, like @cass06_07, if it has to do with the location of your placenta. Usually as time goes by, the placenta moves upward with the growth of the uterus, so they may be checking on that if your placenta was close to your cervix during your scan. Other guess that I have is that maybe they didn't get clear enough pictures of something, so they want you to come back in just so they can have a better look at one of the organs or limbs or whatnot. But I'm sure if you call them, they'd be able to let you know!

Thanks @notthecheat. I have really shitty insurance, and when I get these bills I’m like... What am I paying for every month again? The insurance usually covers a tiny bit of the cost, but it’s so little it doesn’t even matter. Like, last US they covered $100 which is what my premium is anyway so it just cancelled itself out. It’s not like it matters that I’m working up towards my deductible either, because it’ll just reset to $0 on NYE. My deductible is $3250 so eve with these insane bills, it’ll be a while until I get there!

Hoping as many of us as possible will only need one AS!
We definitely need a finance/insurance thread if we don’t have one.

The finance lady at my OB said...
All my 2018 appointments and 2019 birthing will go towards my 2019 deductible. Except for the U/S they will go toward the year they happen in.
She also suggested switching to a lower deductible plan during open enrollment, after Baby I could switch again because of a “life change”.

Im currently on my employers plan, which I pay about  250 a month for self only and have a 5,000 deductible. It doesn’t cover anything until I reach the deductible. It’s pretty much worthless. I’m in Texas.

  • Idk what Kaiser is doing but I’ve only had to pay co-pays so far and they’ve only been for Harmony and ultrasounds. $20 each. I know our monthly premiums aren’t cheap but the bills going through haven’t been crazy either. Only a couple hundred so far.
  • I’ve paid $1500 so far and I haven’t even had my AS yet. My monthly premium is low so I guess it evens out, but those bills still sting.

We’re going to review our insurance soon and see if we should make any changes come open enrollment m, and if not, figure out if it makes sense to have all three family members on mine or H’s insurance after baby comes. Right now we have separate insurances, but that won’t make any sense with a kid in the picture.
    DS born 2/18/2019
    DD born 4/1/2023
    Baby #3 EDD 11/21/2024
  • @madreofdragons I told you kaiser is the best!!! That’s what we had with DS. They automatically get you in with a lactation consultant 3-4 days after baby is born too (at least they did in dc). Kaiser is the best.
  • I'm at $1560... The AS alone was $433 out of pocket and I need another at 32 weeks, it's a good time! On the plus side I've hit my deductible and my insurance really doesn't cost me anything.
  • I have blue cross and have not had to pay for anything yet out of pocket. My monthly payments are a little high, so maybe that is why. I assume I will have to shell out for my AS and amnio last week, but so far everything has been covered.
  • I have a low premium/high deductible through Aetna along with a health savings account that I've been paying into for four years. Through Aetna, I'm only paying for elective lab tests (the NIPT was $80 and some change) and the NT and AS ultrasounds. All of the routine OB visits (and even the two that were due to spotting and fainting), routine tests (GD, urine samples, etc) are covered fully, with no copay. Aetna doesn't fully cover L&D, and that ended up being just over $5000 for my colleague who delivered last year on the same plan. The out-of-pocket limit is $3500, and I have a little more than that in my health savings account. So if I've figured it all correctly, I'll just be paying for the NIPT and two ultrasounds, since my HSA will cover all of L&D up to the out-of-pocket max, when Aetna will pay 100%. I will be very sad if H gets a new job next year and we move away from my current employer. They have a really nice insurance plan, especially when you use the university's own doctors and clinics (which I am).
  • I am doing a level 2 scan at the MFM clinic on Monday.  The doctor would rather I do the level 2 because of my early diagnosis of GD.   We are team green and so no finding out the sex for us but I am excited to see the baby again and also I suppose to confirm all looks good with his/her heart etc.

@Venessa88 They didn’t mention anything to me about anything different with my scan because of GD. My last appointment was rushed. I have mine tomorrow at a different office and will hear from my doc Monday, now I’m really curious.

    Edit- words are hard!

I was really surprised tbh.  She said it had to do with how early I was diagnosed with GD and the risks to the heart. I wonder if yours will be the same, let me know how it goes!  My doctor didn't seem concerned, just said it was not a "bad idea" to refer me to the MFM to make sure all well good.
  • According to LMP I would be 20 weeks right now, first scan added 5 days to DD. Also really curious to see how she’s measuring now. With being on insulin for GD I’m sure they won’t let me go to 40 weeks. I give up on having a due date. I’m just saying February.
  • @madreofdragons- Me too. People always ask and I just say vaguely, "early February" because, "I'm due February 11th but getting induced a week early because of my age" is kinda unnecessary! But wouldn't you know it, nosy people are not satisfied and follow up with, "when in early February?"  Uh, why do YOU need that level of specificity?! You're not invited.  Ha
  • Scan today went well, but took an hour and a half- baby boy was cooperating but scar tissue was making everything a little fuzzy.

@madreofdragons and @Venessa88 this is my 3rd go round of GD, this one and my last pregnancy being diagnosed at the first appointment. So far no insulin, but I can see that coming at bed soon.  To monitor growth I’ll have scans every month from here on out (my first two were only 5lb 10oz, and 6lb 14oz so I’m not too worried about this one). From the get-go I was told I’ll deliver at 39 weeks- again, same as before and will have to have non- stress tests starting in the 3rd trimester. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for all the GD moms... nothing like a little added stress when pregnant!
  • It sucks, I’m glad this is my last kiddo. And DD was 8lbs without gd. I guess at least my vag can handle a big baby if it happens.
  • Unfortunately for me GD gives me small babies, I do my test next week and I’m hoping I pass this pregnancy but I highly doubt it
  • With my DD I had GD and she was 8lbs 15oz, still under 9 but very close. I vaginally delivered her fine but I'm hoping catching the GD early this around will make this one a bit smaller.

My husband was a big baby though so genetics are also a huge factor I'm sure.
  • Same @Venessa88. H was a 10 pounder.  :o
  • @shellperry
Same here! 3 boys (twins then a single) now a little girl! My boys are so excited. I think they all think they have enough brothers!
  • @bellebaby221 my Boys are thrilled and my H was over the moon. I was really ok with being an all boys mom and was sure this was the same. But nope! Im not going lie I bought some girly head bands today lol
  • AS on Friday was great! Dr reviewed it later in the day and gave a thumbs up. Loved seeing her jump and dance around. At Kaiser they don't allow anyone else in the room the first 30 minutes and after that my husband came in. We ended up getting a lot of pics :)
  • Weird, @glitterbug6 I have Kaiser and they haven’t had any restrictions on people in the room. Just if you have a child there needed to be another adult too.
