Genetic Testing Results

As we begin getting our NT scans/NIPT done, we should have a place to share our results.

I went through all the insurance drama yesterday with office, lab, and insurance to figure out what was covered and I get my blood drawn next week. I'm anxious for sure. For lots of reasons.

@beachmama14 I had my NIPT draw yesterday too! The wait is killing me and it's only been 1 day.

I had blood drawn for the Maternity21 test on Wednesday. I should have results by the 27th, when they’ll do the nuchal measurements, too.

I thought it was weird that I had to go get my blood drawn, and fedex the vials off myself. But.. new OB, new procedures?

That does seem weird. Are they not contracted with a testing lab maybe? My doc does panorama and I don't even know the difference between them all.

@sparkymcgeee That is what I am thinking. It was very strange. The doctor gave me a kit. I had to take it to a lab and have my blood drawn. Then I had to pack it up and drop it at FedEx. I had the Panorama with DS and they did everything in office, so this was so foreign.

I'm dying. I had my NIPT done last Friday and was hoping for results today but nothing yet
  • Options
@oldiebutgoodie80 I know Counsyl kind of does it that way. They send a kit to your Dr, you pick up the kit and take it to the lab. But Im not sure the process of then sending off the blood.

I just did my regular prenatal and then the OB said everything further has to be requested by High Risk - whom I don't see until 12 weeks.

I am going to be twelve weeks before I get a test or ultrasound of any kind, but it seems that everyone else is getting stuff done sooner?
  • Options
@leighbrek With my first pregnancy, I didn't have a first appointment until 12 weeks, and my first (and only) US was at 20 weeks. I think every OB is just different in how they do things.

My friend in Canada said it’s standard to do the first ultrasound at 12 weeks!

My OBGYN office offers at 8 weeks or whenever that first appointment is to confirm pregnancy. Then at or around 10 weeks, they said I’m eligible to do the NIPT test. 13 weeks or so, they want me to schedule the NT so we’ll get an ultrasound then when they measure baby’s fluid and all that good stuff but I think that’s it until the anatomy scan which happens around 20 weeks.

Thanks everyone. I was worried for a second! I am in Canada, so I guess 12 weeks if is!
  • Options
@leighbrek I think some of it has to do with personal history as well. I have multiple losses and I’m AMA so I’m monitored a bit closer in general.

@leighbrek I'm in Canada and I've had a dating ultrasound around 8 weeks with all my pregnancies. I've just requested it, otherwise, the first one they usually do is the NT scan.

I don't think this is always the case. My midwife practice sees you for 1st apt around 10 weeks. I also booked an apt with my GP as soon as I got BFP and she scheduled me a dating ultrasound (did it at 8+4) and she ordered my NIPT test for me (which is usually after 9 weeks). NIPT isn't covered by Ontario insurance though so it costs $800 for Panorama here (I know some provinces did start covering though) unless it's covered by your private insurance (DHs insurance covers $500).

Yikes kiwi. That makes me thankful for my insurance. Mine is covered and only costs 120.

ETA:  I should clarify my part only costs 120. The test is 600.

@sparkymcgeee It's only fully covered here by the government health plan if you are over 40 (which is what AMA is considered here). Otherwise, it may or may not be covered by private insurance depending on your coverage. If none of the above apply, then you would have to pay the full cost OOP.

@kiwieloping so I’m not sure if it works the same in Canada since our insurance works differently, but my insurance wasn’t going to cover Panorama either. I called the lab The tests was offered through (Natera in my case) and they said if the test was denied by my insurance to give them a call when I got the bill and they would only charge me $200. Could be worth a call!

Thanks for the thoughts. We did call our private insurance and DHs covers up to $500 for any lab tests. Our universal healthcare plan does not cover unless (as a PP stated) you are over 40 or have a few other risk factors. If your 12 week screening tests positive then you can also get it for free. Universal healthcare is governed by provinces (not federal) and some are starting to cover it. So I imagine it's just a matter of time to get through the red tape process. Then it will be free to everyone like almost everything else.

    @leighbrek
I paid for an ultrasound at six weeks for peace of mind at a local ultrasound place! I had my first one with my doctor at eight weeks.  She did tell me she had me in early because of my loss history.  Last pregnancy was with a reproductive specialist and I had one pretty much every week until twelve weeks! I think it can vary depending on a lot of things.
  • Options
@kiwieloping I've been to see the midwife; it's just the tests. They did my own blood work for anything I might personally be carrying, but absolutely no screening or ultrasounds for baby yet. Next week will be my first everything at 12 weeks.

Thought I’d post the cost estimate for the NIPT I am having done, since I know a lot of people are curious about that. This company anyway is more affordable than I thought!

@Kabazaba I’m pretty sure BCBS covers for everyone. You can even google it- I think they were the trendsetters in saying it would be covered but they blow at preauthorizationa. I have BCBS MA and counsyl was covered 100% for me last time

@AshVA yayyyyyyyy no better results than that!

@AshVA @oldiebutgoodie80 you're both way nicer than me. I'd totally just look at it by myself (I did for the sneak peak results already...) I am so impatient!

I’m so jealous of everyone finding out the sex of their baby already!! I need to check and see what my insurance covers.
  • Options
Wow. Lots of boys. I'm hoping for another little girl. I'm probably not going to be able to find out what it is again until my 20 week ultrasound. I'm planning on doing genetic counseling but last time that was around 12 weeks and they did blood test and u/s and said the sexual orientation of the baby wasn't a genetic defect so they wouldn't tell me if they knew or not.
