Quickening?

I am 13 weeks and 4 days with my first (it's a boy if that matters) and I swear I started feeling quickening yesterday. It felt like someone was tapping their fingers on my abdomen. Now, I'm feeling it a ton. Granted, I did partake in National Donut Day this morning so lots of caffeine and sugar on board. Am I crazy?! Is it way too early?! I can't decide if I'm really feeling it, I'm just always a tad gassy, or my brain is playing tricks on me.

It's possible to start feeling movement at about 13 weeks, but first time moms typically don't feel movement until closer to 16 weeks.  If it's really low in your abdomen it's more likely to be baby than digestive bubbles.  I don't recall it feeling like tapping though, it feels more like tiny flutters.

I agree with the other posters. It’s so hard to tell when the first movements happen, but later you’ll know if you really felt the baby or not. I felt like I was feeling movement a couple weeks ago. But that’s really early, so who knows. I haven’t been feeling much right now. I’m looking forward to feeling my baby move more soon!
  • I also agree with others that it seems to be pretty early for FTM. Not saying it's not the baby because it very well could be.
Also at 13 weeks the baby is sooo low (almost in your pubic bone) so it depends where you felt it. And at this point it tends to be more of a flutter like a butterfly or fish in your abdomen since their legs aren't strong enough to give you that tapping or kicking feeling.
I was probably 21-ish weeks when I felt baby first pregnancy.
  • Not technically too early to feel it, but probably too early to know with any certainty what it was. Remember the sensation, give it a few weeks, and you'll probably be able to judge better.

For what it's worth, last pregnancy, I definitely felt something once right around that time (a swishy kind of rolly feeling low in my pelvis) that now I'm pretty confident must have been one hell of a fetal somersault; I also felt a lot of things that I was sure at the time were baby that were, in hindsight, definitely not.
  • Thanks all! Well, I'll definitely wait and see. Something is definitely going on in my stomach... I have been feeling little taps and flutters all morning. It's really strange.

  • I have felt them too at 12 weeks + 4 days and it’s weird as hell because it’s not gas (I have that too and it’s different lol), it’s not a muscle spasm either. It’s just...weird. Can’t say for sure it’s the baby, it’s probably not, but I’ve never felt anything like that before.
  • With my first I thought I was having stomach twitches for the longest time before I finally accepted that they were baby movements. Now I'm here like @runrinserepeat analyzing every bit of gas for evidence of baby movement. I'm so excited to start feeling them for real.

  • Last week (so when I’m only 9 weeks along), I felt a weird feeling low a few times for a couple days. Like the feeling when you have a bug in your hands and it flies/bumps against you, except down near my uterus/bladder. I have no idea what it was. I suppose it was probably gas, but I’ve never had gas feel like that, and it was quite low. Does gas change with pregnancy? Lol

It had to be way too early to feel baby, especially as a FTM. I’m guessing maybe it was just my muscles stretching or something like that. Can all the stretching happen/be felt without the cramps/pain associated?
  • @tumbleweed-1 In my limited experience I would have to agree that stretching can happen without cramps or pain. I haven't felt any in a few weeks, but there were a few days where I could feel stretching. It was slow and deliberate, like a balloon inflating, but instead of wimpy balloon skin it felt sturdy like thick whoopie-cushion rubber. It amazed me that it didn't hurt but totally felt like stretching.

@binxybaby I felt an odd little flutter a week or so ago, haven't felt one like it or since. I like to think it was LO, but I guess I'll never really know. My gassiness has decreased, but it very well may have been some salad...processing.

Omg thank you for finally explaining how it's supposed to feel in terms I understand. Everyone says "flutters" but I just didn't get it! The "fish in a bowl" analogy makes total sense to me.

I don’t think it’s too early for a FTM, although it is uncommon. It really depends. I felt my first LO at 14wks and it was a very clear pop pop pop like little flicks from the inside. The feeling was the same and it was very clearly not gas over the next couple weeks. By 16wks I have video where you can see him moving from the outside and my spouse could feel him then too.

Every pregnancy is different, a lot depends on the positioning of the baby, the placenta, and your sensitivity. Not sure if I’ll fee this one earlier or later or if the first movements will be as clearly Baby or more ambiguous. I agree with PP that you’ll have a better idea if it was movement as you progress and can get a good feel for, how it feels. :)

  • I felt definite movements at 13/14 weeks as a FTM. I was skeptical at first but it was definitely movement. Didn’t feel it daily till later on.
  • It’s different for everyone. I felt my son at 16 weeks, my sister says she felt my niece (her first and only pregnancy) at 13 weeks... so it’s not impossible. As time goes and you start to feel baby for sure more often, you’ll have a better idea if it was actually baby or not. I am currently 12 weeks with baby #2 and I have had lots of muscle twitching.. definitely not baby... but even the muscle twitching can feel like fluttering similar to quickening. I know it’s not baby yet though because while I have felt it low, I have also felt it higher up. Things are starting to stretch more, so muscle twitching can totally happen.

  • No it’s not too early! You know your body better than anyone else and some women are really more in tune with their bodies than others. Women will try to say its gas but you will first question it and then you will just know.
Conrats! Isn’t it the best little feeling. It is just like a tapping :)
  • I’ve felt all 4 of my babies really early :). Totally possible!

  • I don't think it's too early. Every one is different. I felt my first at 16 weeks. I have a couple of friends who felt their second as early as 8-9 weeks.

  • Hahah "fish in a bowl" is so accurate to me. I'm excited to hopefully feel them earlier this time; last time I didn't know FOR SURE it was them until I was close to 25 weeks, being a FTM. I get that feeling sometimes  (fish bowl) but I think it's just phantom kicks, which are TOTALLY REAL! ;)  Had them after I had DD.

  • I'm not feeling it anymore so it must have just been some really odd gas lol. Hoping to start actually feeling something here in 2-4 weeks because the start of 2nd trimester has been boring. I know I'm going to regret saying that when 3rd trimester rolls along lol

  • With my 1st pregnancy i felt little taps too. I was probably15 or 16 weeks along and it turnes out to be our little one. This time I'm14 weels and i swear I've been feeling him move all over
  • Whoa I think I just felt it  :o it felt like a pulsing inside my abdomen but without the regularity of a pulse  :o

  • @ab_canada
The way that makes sense to me to describe it is like little bubbles popping on your belly on the inside.  The baby is SO small at this time that the impact of a kick or punch is so tiny.
  • Yes, little bubbles or butterflies is exactly how it felt for me the first time.

I can’t wait to experience this! I keep wondering what it will feel like. All these descriptions are helpful. Unfortunately, I have an anterior placenta and this is my first pregnancy. My provider says this will delay me feeling any movement early on. Bummer!
  • I think I felt baby yesterday morning! I was laying in bed (just waking up) and suddenly felt sort of like a pulse or a muscle twitch where the baby is, except it wasn't as regular as a pulse.

  • @mch195 I had an anterior placenta my first time and was told the same thing, but got my first flicks (I called them pop rocks) at 14wks. It is likely you may feel it much later depending on placement, but it really just depends. FX it’s sooner for you. :)

  • @mch195 I had an anterior placenta with DS and didn't feel him until 22 weeks, it varies! I sat thru my whole anatomy scan watching him move around and willing myself to feel something, but I couldn't. FX you can still feel movement sooner!!

Afm, I thought I was feeling baby a couple weeks ago but then at my NT scan I could see baby moving all over and couldn't feel any of it, so I'm thinking I was imagining things. Idk how my placenta is this time, I keep forgetting to ask during scans!! I'm hoping to feel baby soon though!

  • I am almost positive I felt these babies yesterday! Just felt like a light tapping, hoping it wasn’t just gas haha
  • I coughed and felt a bunch of taps in quick succession low in my abdomen. Now I'm thinking it might be baby again lol. I can't make up my mind. I figure by 17-18 weeks, I'll have figured this out for sure.
