I see recommendations all over the place about back seat mirrors to see the baby while driving. My understanding is that items like this are unsafe (projectile possibility in a crash), however I keep seeing them recommended.
Does anyone have an knowledge, resources, information on items like this?
@sammierose464 We have one, though I’ll admit to not having done any research on it. It’s secured to the headrest pretty well and super light. If that’s a dangerous projectile, so is any other price of crap laying around my car (and maybe they are). They are super convient though. Peace of mind that I know my quiet baby is just asleep and didn’t somehow choke or some other weird crazy freak accident. Now I mostly use it to see if DS is falling asleep when I don’t want him to so I can try and keep him awake until we get home.
@sammierose464 I have this one. It has a strap that goes under the headrest and clips back on the top of the mirror so it won't fly off in an accident. It's nice to be able to turn it on and off with the remote from the front seat if LO starts getting fussy.
@sammierose464 I've had several and understand the risks associated with flying projectiles. I would never be able to drive safely without being able to see my kids, so it's worth the risk to me. I could see were it might not be to others though.
My OBGYN gave me a list of pediatricians in the area when I started. With ds I just called and made sure they were accepting new patients. When I was admitted to the hospital the nurses asked who my pediatrician was and he showed up the next day to do a checkup. I’m sure it just depends on the hospital and their procedures.
We have the headrest mirror with DS and I love it for being able to see what’s going on back there. The one we picked attaches pretty securely, so I’ve never felt concerned that it would be dangerous. DS actually likes it a lot too because he can kind of see us in it, and it’s funny because when we put him in any other car nowadays (like last week when we were traveling), he’ll actually point to the headrest once he’s in the car and say “no mirror!”
I just realized my new car has a mirror on the sunglasses holder! I can have a semi good view of the 2nd row of the car, possibly 3rd row, but that's my dog row so not as important as the baby row
How do I get this baby off my bladder??? I literally fee her punching or kicking very low and that combined with tight muscles makes me constantly feel like I have to pee. Hellllpppp!!! I did not have this at all last time.
@cdepperschmidt belly band?? no clue. I'm going to try it because my sciatica is driving me insane, and the OB suggested I try it to help take the pressure off the nerves. Baby is really low so I feel like I have to pee 24/7, especially when I stand up.
@rabtaido1214 My aunt was in a similar situation and just stopped everybody she saw with kids and asked who their pediatrician was. That was before Facebook so she couldn’t just get on a local mom group and ask.
Re: mirrors - we didn’t do them because they can come unhooked and become a projectile and while other things in the car are also potential projectiles, this one is basically aimed right at the baby’s head if it comes off. I’ve also heard from other moms that used them that they can become a huge distraction where they were watching the baby more than paying attention to driving.
Technically anything in your car could turn into a deadly projectile, like your purse, water bottle, etc. I just found that I kept looking into the mirror as I drove and was distracted from the road so I took the mirror down.
@mamabearcj Tina is right. Cravings for “non-nutritive items” (including stuff like chalk, dirt, and ice) is a form of pica, and can be a sign of anemia. See if your doctor will run a CBC to check your red blood cells.
Pelvic rocks and then lay on your side (left is better but both are good). Pelvic rocks are the cow part of cat cow position in yoga. Do 20-50 of them doesn't have to be slow I also don't speed through them though. These are supposed to give baby the most room to move up and shift position. Laying on the side helps give them more time to move without quickly shifting to standing.
This might be a silly question, but does anyone know how much the baby can move, position wise, at this point? I’m 19+4 today and sometimes I feel what I think are kicks on my right side just below my belly button area and then other times, maybe a few hours later, I feel what I think are kicks in the lower left side more by my hip bone. I’m just wondering if both of those are baby as maybe it is flipping around in there, or if it is different body parts? Or maybe some of them aren’t even baby and are just muscle twitches or something? I just think it’s interesting because I really have no idea if their legs can be on one side one day and on the other side the next. What do you think?
@spartan4life The smaller they are, the more room they have to be flipping all over. But even once they’re big and pretty stuck in one spot, you’ll feel movement all over. Feet, knees, punches, elbows, headbutts, and real butts. It was fun with DS to try and guess how he was curled up based on what I felt where. But ultrasound revealed I’m a terrible guesser.
@chopchop25 and @tinattt23 That’s what I was thinking it might just be feet, arms, head butts! It’s just so strange and awesome that it always makes me laugh, but then I started wondering if I’m laughing at baby moving or at just muscle twitches they are all generally the same feeling so I’m going with them all being different moving parts!
Normal for fetal movement to still be unpredictable at 20 weeks? Lil' monster was super active, moving around all day long for about a week. The past few days I've been feeling her move only a couple times a day.

@spartan4life at around 19 weeks, the top of your uterus is very near the bottom of your belly button. So 100% can be baby flipping around, and you feeling it in both places! And they can flop sides from minute to minute! I've seen my kiddos flip (usually butt pointed out toward my belly) from laying one way to another on ultrasound and physically (once Ds was a little farther along). They can basically do full aerobatics/gymnastics routines until they just run out of room towards the end. Lol
@mytrueloves my OB said it could be 22 weeks before you feel consistent movement. And it's even longer if you have an anterior placenta! If you get to worried, you can always call your OB/nurse and see what they suggest. Also something cold and sweet to eat or drink, and then laying down flat on your back for a few minutes. That's how I usually can get this little moving.
@spartan4life at this point, there’s plenty of room for them in there, so they can definitely do flips and move around a lot. During my AS last week, baby started out with feet towards my right and then by the end was facing the complete opposite way. It’s fun as they get a little bigger (but before they’re too big) to feel them do flips and barrel rolls in there. Such a totally weird sensation!
@mytrueloves my OB said no consistent movement until 24 weeks, and no kick counting until 28. She said at this stage its very normal to feel him for a few days, and then nothing for a while, and then back to movement
I'm 21+4. It's only been the last 2-3 days that I'm feeling consistent movement throughout the day and it goes in spurts. It's still not super strong, but little moments of reminding me he's there. I'm hoping DH will be able to feel soon!
@kiwi2628 yes! I totally forgot about kick count. Definitely no kick count until 28 weeks. I think our office uses 22 as average, but they seem to worry until closer to 28. (Especially if they can see baby moving on ultrasound.)
@kiwi2628 that's reassuring!! I feel B all the time, he has a posterior placenta but I rarely feel A and hers is anterior so I wasn't expecting to feel her as much but definitely more than I do.
