@whaat We're definitely not fancy over here... I got the cheapest ones they had pill for pill and just stuck with 'em; I think I got the last batch BOGO, but vitamins are still stupidly overpriced. Or I'm cheap. One or the other.
Re: cheap on the vitamins I bought some generic ones at target. I looked at fancier ones that cost a heck of a lot more, and then they say to take 2 or 3 per day! No, cheap bottle once a day. That’s about all I can remember to take anyway. My MIL “approved” them. She’s a pharmacist, so she has been very opinionated about what medicines are & aren’t acceptable for me to take right now. It’s not a battle I want to fight. Lol, but if she did tell me to buy the expensive, vegan ones I’d say, “you can get them for me”.
My 3 yo, who doesn’t know I’m pregnant, keeps telling me how much he loves my “booboos” (boobs), how much they’re growing, and how big they need to get. I swear he hasn’t mentioned them in the almost two years since he stopped breastfeeding. Ooooookay, kid.
I take the PURE prenatals. They’re the only ones that work with my son’s allergies, so I don’t really have options. So far they’ve been good, but dannnnng they are spendy.
So I'm starting to put together a list of stuff I would like to get before the baby arrives and am stuck on sleeping arrangements. Part of me wants to splurge for the Snoo (fancy-schmancy bassinet that rocks the baby and plays soothing noises) to help us get more sleep in the beginning. I'm worried I won't be able to keep up if I don't get any sleep. I'm normally quite cheap so the fact that I'm even considering this is shocking me since it's SO ridiculously pricey (currently on sale for a bargain price of $812). I can probably find it second hand for less, but I've read that it's a bad idea to do the sleeping surface part of sleeping arrangements (like a mattress) second hand, right? My other thought is to start directly in a mini-crib, which we'll eventually probably get anyway since we are in a small apartment and the snoo only works for the first six months.
Re: cheap on the vitamins I bought some generic ones at target. I looked at fancier ones that cost a heck of a lot more, and then they say to take 2 or 3 per day!
Seriously. I bought some spendy ones at our co-op and was appalled to find out the dose was 3 enormous pills a day. They’re still in the cabinet but I’m back to up&up.
@mittenlove86 also going to be moving while pregnant. I do not have a 15 month old, so you have all of my respect! I am utterly exhausted, and we haven't even started the moving process yet. Yesterday was our inspection, and I didn't even do anything, but it took everything out of me. On the bright side, inspections went well, so it looks like we will hopefully be going through with the closing on June 18th.
@kadeephd I haven't heard of the Snoo, but I'm 99% sure we're going with a mini crib. We live in a two bedroom and I desperately want to keep my 2 years old's sleep as uninterrupted as possible, so we're thinking of a mini crib in our room until this LO sleeps through the night. I really like the look and size of the Babyletto brand so far and found a ton of cute mini crib sheets this morning on Amazon. Getting excited!
Oh, and not to burst your bubble about the Snoo at all, but there will probably be a fair amount of sleeplessness no matter what sleeping option you choose, just because newborns have to eat like every 2 hours at the beginning, then every 3-4 once they're back up to their birth weight. Just wanted to throw that schedule out there just so you don't drop a pretty penny and then realize you're up a lot at first anyway! I literally remember sitting in my first breastfeeding class, doing the math of the feedings (like how often they are, how long they last) and being like WAIT, WHEN DO YOU SLEEP??? But! The chaos and sleeplessness of the newborn period does pass quickly! (I hope this is helpful and not scary.)
@kadeephd I don’t know about the snoo, but we wound up using a rock’n’play for the first 3-4 months which helped enormously. I mean, it wasn’t the original sleeping arrangement I was planning but it was what worked.
@kadeephd I’m a pretty strong advocate for safe sleep, and I can’t remember off the top of my head if the snoo is considered safe by the AAP. Honestly, even with bells and whistles, it might not help your baby sleep. I’d also lean towards something that has a flat surface. I’ve heard of babies who really struggle with the transition from the rock n play to the crib because it’s just completely different. I have to buy a mini crib for this baby because my daughter will still be in hers. I will use the pack and play or bassinet from last time for when we roomshare, and then move the baby to it’s own crib at that point. You honestly don’t use a bassinet for that long so I’d really be hesitant to buy something expensive, unless you’re rolling in the dough lol
Agree with @Jens_Hoes that the rock’n’play isn’t ideal usually. We had a bassinet/co-sleeper (almost never used) and a crib, but we had a baby with reflux who spit up every time she laid on a flat surface for the first 6 months. So it was the rock’n’play or human arms....
For those of us dealing with small spaces, has anyone found a compact changing table? I found this one, which I really like, and would work in our room, but I would rather not spend $250.
I know we don't really *need* a changing table, but I'd really like one to have in our room to keep all of the diaper/wipes/etc stuff together and organized, because I fear that once we have 2 kids (along with 2 adults, 2 cats and a dog in our 2 bedroom apartment) we are already close to veering off into disorganization and chaos, so I want as many opportunities to keep things tidy as possible!
Yeah, the Snoo sounds cool, but that's a lot of money to be out if you realize that the sleep arrangement you planned doesn't work for you for whatever reason (it wouldn't have for us; Nugget refused to sleep swaddled from day 1). Your mileage may vary, and every baby is different.
We're probably going for the bedside cosleeper this time; I found it prohibitively difficult after my section to get out of bed and get to her in her cradle the middle of the night (we breastfed, so it was always me) so we ended up with an in-bed cosleeper. With a toddler who likes to join us in the wee hours that's not going to work this time. We'll have the crib set up if needed, and I can always dig out the pack'n'play if necessary.
For what it's worth, even though we didn't start l sleeping through the night until pretty recently (she's 2), you adjust to the exhaustion faster than you'd think (adrenaline helps, falling back asleep with a boob in her mouth also didn't hurt). We also never had to schedule feeds (superchunk, didn't lose much weight ini the hospital, fed on demand and grew just fine). I had other friends whose kids were sleeping 6 hour stretches before they made it back from maternity leave. Some who formula fed were able to trade night duties with their SO to ensure that they weren't total zombies every day. And granted, some were miserable, but it wasn't universal. Totally varies; don't fear the exhaustion too much. It's not guaranteed, no matter what kind of sleeper you get.
I really really really wanted the Snoo last time around. It had just come out when my son was born.
I know someone who recently had one and they said their baby hated it.
That said I don’t know if I would spend the money on it because there’s no guarantee your kid will like it. We did rock n play, bassinet, swing and finally switched to the dock a tot which was a life saver. Nothing else worked. NOTHING!
I was a big safe sleep person as well and swore I would never have a baby in my bed, until I had a baby that absolutely refused to sleep anywhere else.
I was so sleep deprived by the time we got to the dock a tot (2 months in) that I was bordering on being a hazard to myself and my child.
Hopefully we all get lucky with babies that sleep all the time, in the safe flat on their backs space that they are supposed to. But be prepared that it all may go very very differently.

@kadeephd the rock n play saved my life. The first two weeks of my DS’s life she screamed bloody murder when put in her crib. We tried the tired but awake method, sound asleep transfer, swaddled, unswaddle, sound machine, shusher noise thing, extra feeding for a full tummy..you named it we tried it as soon as her back touched the mattress wide awake screaming. Then my best friend was over and saw me trying to put her down for a nap. She immediately left my house and returned with a rock n play. Sleeping baby with in minutes, no more crying and longer naps! It is sleep approved and AMAZING!!
Re: vitamins My body won’t let me swallow pills, and the gummy prenatals gross me out right now. I’ve been using these liquid vitamins and love them! Kind of pricey, but worth it if I get a healthy baby without entirely depleting my body. Photo in the spoiler.

I have relied on the same freaking prenatals for practically forever; opened a new bottle about a week ago, and they smell unbelievably fishy. I have to assume that one of the softgels leaked or something, and it's AWFUL. Thye're too effing expensive to just throw away so I'm taking them anyway, but holy hell the fish burps they're giving me make me want to die.
Are the the Jameson? I strayed from my materna and bought those, my husband has to open the bottle in another room and put it in my mouth as I plug my nose and hold the OJ ready to swig it back. Toooo expensive to throw away. So disgusting

Nature Made. Every other bottle I've had of them had been fine, it's just this one that's gross. Sigh.

@runrinserepeat I'm with you! My 3 year old has been talking about being a big sister. She has also not been told ANYTHING about this pregnancy. Do you think our kids are psychic somehow?
@fernsy My son knew I was pregnant before I did and he's not even two yet. Whenever I was with him he'd say baby over and over and over again, but not when he was with anyone else. I took a pregnancy test at 13DPO and yup.. he was right. Maybe coincidence, but I don't think so. I think some younger ones can sense that kind of stuff.
RE: Rock & Play - We definitely had my son sleep in that for the first six weeks. I strapped him in and he slept right next to me. I tried putting him in the pack & play to sleep once we moved upstairs but he wasn't having it. He moved to his crib at six weeks and slept like a rockstar, thankfully!

@maureenmce I like the c&b changing table, but I think it would drive me crazy to have the clutter of *stuff* visible on the shelves once it’s in use. I’m planning on getting another white dresser and using the top drawer for diapering supplies, and the rest for baby clothes/blankets etc.
@runrinserepeat I'm with you! My 3 year old has been talking about being a big sister. She has also not been told ANYTHING about this pregnancy. Do you think our kids are psychic somehow?
I hope not - the 6 year old (also doesn’t know) asked Monday how many babies it was possible to have at one time O_O
@maureenmce I don’t have a changing table, but I put a changing pad, tub for diapers, wipes and desitin on top of my daughters dresser. If we’re not upstairs I just use the floor, couch, etc to change her.

Same here! We just used the top of the dresser with a changing pad, top drawer holds all the changing stuff. With DS we were in an apartment, so we almost always used the changing pad. Now we're in a 2 story house with a split level, and I'm not about to walk up all those stairs once baby is here to change a diaper. We (meaning I...) plan to use cloth this time so I'll probably just have a wet bag downstairs somewhere so I don't have to go all the way upstairs for every diaper change.
The good news: I was able to pop out of trivia to join the sale no problem.

The excellent news: I tried again at trivia halftime just for giggles and the dress I wanted hadn't actually sold out! It was one of three styles left.

Re: changing tables I have a guest room that will eventually be baby room, but baby will be in our room for a while. Our dressers are too tall to use as a changing table. (Mounted on the wall) I’ve seen some of those online. They are a bit more expensive, but if they work and save space they could be worth it. I already ruined the living room wall when I mounted the tv, so not too worried about that.
@tumbleweed-1 I'd just use a changing pad on the bed OR if you get a pack and play, they usually come with a little changing pad/bassinet. I just used that in the middle of the night/when we were in our room.

@tumbleweed-1 I never got a changing table for our first, and instead opted for the Keekaru Peanut changer. It's a bit pricy but I looooove it so much. It's made of some sort of plasticky material that can just be wiped clean in the event that baby does pee or poop on it. The first several months I would just move it onto the bed as needed, and it was the perfect height for changing.
That said, the question of whether the baby will pee all over your bed...well...there will probably be an incident or two. But it's not the worst thing in the world. Even when the baby did pee on the mat, not too much got on the quilt, and since it was the quilt I just threw it in the washer and that was that.
