Anyone taking a probiotic? Is there a pregnancy specific one? I’m assuming they’re safe and all. I used to take one and only stopped because they are expensive, but that’s the next “natural” thing I want to try to see if it helps my depression.
@lalala2004 yup! I take digestive advantage probiotic gummies. They were recommended by the doctor I saw for my bronchitis when she gave me antibiotics she wanted me to add a probiotic. I like them, but I don’t have anything to compare
@mrsbubbles-2 that appeals to me, because between my 3/day prenatal, Zantac, and all the OTC medicine I’ve been taking for my various ailments, it would be nice to chew a gummy instead of swallow a pill.
Why do I pee a normal amount one day, and 10,000 times the next?! Is it just how the baby is positioned that day? Today has been a nonstop bathroom fest.

@lalala2004 - we bought them for my step son a few years back and it was the first time ever we didn't have to remind him to take his vitamins - I realized why when I started taking them, they're yummy
@Funnygirl34 - It could be water retention, or how much you're drinking on that particular day. Mine will vary a lot if I have a lot of salt in one day then the next I'm peeing like every hour!

Will taking a probiotic make me more "regular"? I know there's yogurt and obviously fiber but is there anything else I can do to make this constipation or diarrhea situation a little bit more tolerable? I'm losing my mind over here straining for poop nuggets.
@calimom2524 Prune Juice is what has been helping me. I just chug some right out of the bottle everyday. I ran out few weeks ago for about a week and man did I miss it. It helps keep it soft and regular.
@calimom2524 (and really any S+TM) - I saw you comment on the "preping for BFing" thread that your BFing relationship with your first wasn't what you'd hoped. Did you have better success with your second? Did you do anything differently, or just luck of the draw? I ended up EPing for DD and am hoping that I have a better relationship with this kid.

Lol @livinthesunnylife is right, I've totally promised her the perfect future with her baby because I know all of the things.
No but seriously, in my personal experience, yes. BFing was much much better with my second. I attribute it to a lot of things though. Delivery with my first was extremely tough, when he came out we didn't get to immediately cuddle, the room was still super high stress, I lost a ton of blood, it was just a really un-fun experience. He had a bad latch, he was colic, he was jaundice, there were just so many factors that went into it. Eventually we got it figured out but I only lasted 5 and a half months BFing him because the stress of it just wasn't worth it for any of us.
DS2 on the other hand, his delivery was a dream. Two pushes and he was out, immediately set on my chest for skin to skin, immediately went to my boob and ate for an hour. They didn't even wash the delivery guck off of him until later that afternoon. He was laid back, chill, and I was much more calm with him because I had already BTDT so I felt more confident as a mom.
I'm not saying this is going to be the case for everyone or maybe even anyone else, hell I may not even have an easy time this third time around, but I can say in my experience BFing number two was one hundred thousand times easier than with one and I'm really hoping to have a similar experience this time. However, if I don't, I know now that it's ok.

Random: how much say do you have in getting induced as you approach/pass your due date? I just had one of my trials re-set for January so now I am thinking it would work out amazingly to deliver right around (or before) my due date for mat leave (to give me enough time to come back and get up to speed for trial). If I am getting really close to the due date and the baby is measuring big would I be able to request that? Or am I crazy for trying to take this into account and not just letting things happen when they happen?

@legallykate From my understanding, unless there is a medical reason for you to be induced, they likely won't do it. Now, if you go beyond your due date, some doctors are quicker to push an induction than others. Some will induce at just a few days overdue, while others will make you wait until almost 42 weeks!

Like @juliebird6 said, from what I gather, an OB won't schedule an induction unless it's medically necessary for the safety of the mother and/or the baby. There's lots of reasons but the biggest one is the lung development. My best friend is scheduled for her c-section on 4/9 and she's begging her doctor every week to induce because she's so uncomfortable and her OB just keeps reminding her it's best for the baby to stay inside as long as possible. I do think if you're overdue some are more likely to schedule the induction but from my personal experience, if baby isn't ready to come out the induction could be a pretty long and grueling process.

Yes. This. 100 times this. Even at 41+5, my labor was 36+ hours. I don't know what your hopes are for a birth plan, but an induction before there are any indicators that baby is ready is not pleasant.
@neeraja_k Sorry, wasn't meant to scare, more just an awareness of why it's not a good idea to push for it before it's medically necessary. If you are high risk, obviously there are other factors that your doctor will consider when making that decision.
I’m so bummed. I thought I had a UTI but it is group b strep (GBS). They are treating with oral antibiotics now and said they will give me iv antibiotics during labor. Googling babies born with gbs has freaked me out...anyone ever been there, done that?

Stuck in the box.
I had strep B when I was pregnant with my first. The only issue I encountered was that I couldn't labor at home at all. I had to go in right away to be put on penicillin. DD was fine and so was I. No medical issues whatsoever.
@calimom2524 Yeah, I do. It's just I had this fantasy in my head of going to the hospital in the morning to be induced and holding a baby by the evening.
Then reading the many, many horror stories of inductions gone bad, while trying to get an idea of just what goes on during an induction, just almost makes a C-section sound more appealing.
Maybe "Sweet Pea" will be done cooking by that point and want to come out on it's own conveniently during that week and I won't have to bother.
@legallykate Some of it is dependent on your hospital and OB. When I had DS, my hospital only offered epidurals between 8am-3pm because they only staffed an anesthesiologist to do them during those hours. Several women I know were induced a few days before their due dates in order to be guaranteed an epi. My old OB seemed to prefer doing that. But that’s the only time I’ve ever heard of it happening.
@legallykate Most hospitals have a policy on when they will induce. The hospital I delivered at makes you wait until at least 41w (obviously there are medical exceptions). Like calimom & juliebird said above, I would not recommend an induction to anyone. The labor is harder because it's pitocin induced- stronger contractions. And longer, my labor was 31 hours. I really really really want to go into labor naturally this time. Come on body, I want to know what that feels like.
@mozartsmuse - I was GSB+ with DS, the OB told me that if my water broke or if I started having contractions to come in so they can start antibiotics. I think they had to get a bag of fluid in me before they could start the antibiotics, but it was no big deal for me. I was a scheduled induction so we had plenty of time. They will test you again for GSB at I think 36 weeks (someone correct me, my memory is fuzzy on that one) and you'll get the IV antibiotics when you get to the hospital. STAY AWAY FROM GOOGLE!!!
@neeraja_k - Like I said above, I was a planned induction due to diabetes. So the way my practice handles it is that they put you on the list of inductions for non-emergency needs for the day and call you when it's your time. You have about 2 hours to get there at that point. So I got the call about 1-is and we got to the hospital about 2. They admitted me and started my IV line, pretty standard hospital stuff. I got my first round of cytotec at about 4 and my second later that afternoon. They started my pitocin about 8-ish and gave me an ambien to get some sleep. I woke up around 2am with pretty strong contractions and asked for an epi. Epi was placed about 20 min later and I went back to sleep. They broke my water when I hit about 7 or 8cm. I hit 10cm at about 1pm and pushed through 3 contractions and baby was out. So about 24 hours total. I had a wonderful experience with my induction.
@livinthesunnylife I couldn't tell you all of the reasons why people chose to go that route, but it definitely happens. Scheduling preferences, anesthesia, and fears of tearing/incontinence are all among reasons I've seen for choosing a C section. It's becoming more common in the US, but it's already standard practice in several places including Brazil where over 85% of hospital births are C section.

@derbysquirrel Like an elective CSection? Why would anyone want to do that?
Actually I do know that some lawyers do that to better control their schedules, but I would much rather have a vaginal birth and avoid the recovery and scar (and also experience vaginal birth if possible) so I wouldn't go that route.

I mean, not ALL inductions are bad. I was induced with DS2 because my ovaries were sticking to my uterus and my induction was amazing. I went in at 10pm, got the foley bulb put in around midnight and then took a sleeping pill, had minor contractions while I slept, the foley fell out around 6am to where I was then 4cm, started pitocin, got my epidural around 9am, and delivered him at noon with only two pushes. Plus, yours will be medically necessary. My point is if it is NOT medically necessary plus the chance of a failed or challenging induction I would highly recommend not requesting to be induced early.
I would question any OB who supports a person electing a C Section for non-medical reasons.
@legallykate I laugh at the idea that someone would schedule their labor around their professional life. That will be the last time they can schedule the infant to do things when they feel like it. Kids don't get sick or need their parent when it's convenient.
@neeraja_k As awful as my induction sounds, I would still pick it over a CS all day long.

I do know that STMs who had a c-section with their first are usually given the option to schedule their c-section. My best friend scheduled hers because she had GD and when they tried to induce her it was a failed induction that ended up with a very long and painful process for everyone and she doesn't want to go through that again. She has GD again this time so she chose to simply schedule hers and be mentally prepared for a c-section instead of trying to go through an induction and it not being successful again. Now that I could understand, but scheduling a c-section "just because" would make no sense to me.
