Re: Symptoms {March edition}

  • @izza2 Is it possibly melasma? Typically it appears on your face (pregnancy mask), but I have it on my right breast from when I was a teen. I suspect it was from the pill I was on.

  • Curious if any FTM who are experiencing some of the glorious symptoms and pain who were originally considering a med free birth are now re-considering based upon the level of discomfort with just carrying the baby? I swear with the multiple pain areas I have right now (droids, back/hip, reflux) I would have said there was no way I could do med free! Obviously, labor is so very very very different, and different for every person... Just curious! And, I suppose to offer hope if I sound cynical, I have had 3 medication free births!

  • @meg95995 not a FTM and this might sound really bad, but I was just thinking yesterday how much I am looking forward to the epidural as much for some respite from this hip and back pain as the actual labor pains.

  • @meg95995 I had an epidural with DS, which was only placed while I was in transition.  It didn't provide the relief I was looking for and then ultimately provided too much relief - - I didn't feel anything for days.  The pain of labor is so different then the pain that I'm feeling now (hip wise / SPD / lightening crotch).  Plus, the adreneline and hormones kick in and you almost feel removed from the situation.  So don't base your decision on how you are feeling now.

@doxiemoxie212 I know a lot of people complain about caths, but I freaking loved it.  I also couldn't feel anything, which may be why it didn't bother me.  It was more awkward than anything else.  But given the amount of fluids pumped in / the amount I was drinking, I would have been in the bathroom every 30 minutes post-baby, which I physically was not up for.
  • @marcus7676 intellectually I know caths are nbd but for some reason if I think about having one I just sort of panic. If I end up needing one I know I’ll just deal with it, realize it’s fine and then be over it, but right now it just seems crazy lol.
  • @doxiemoxie212 I vaguely remember being told they were going to put a cath in, but I honestly didn't even realize when they did it that that was what was going on. Maybe you could just ask them to tell you after the fact? Ask for some distraction during the insertion process?
  • @doxiemoxie212 I was only straight cathed 1 time and didn't feel a thing, but I know beforehand I was all worried about it
  • @kfren no no, you’ve just stumbled upon my greatest fear: that someone will do something in the hospital without telling me (ideally in much detail) what they’re doing. I understand in emergencies this isn’t possible, but short of that I need to be walked through what is happening. I think I’ll be able to deal emotionally with any trauma that happens in the hospital, but I need to feel like I’m holding hands jumping into the abyss with my providers. No secrets, no euphemisms.
  • @doxiemoxie212 I normally am super into details, but there are some things I just don't want to think about and having a tube in my urethra was one of them. Same with the epidural but by the time I got it, I was in so much pain I didn't GAF. I don't recall hearing anything coming out of the anesthesiologist's mouth other than "Don't move."
  • I've had six major (meaning I've been put completely under) surgeries in my adult life. A c-section will be lucky #7. I'm hoping my recovery will be similar to my past surgeries and I'll be walking (sometimes with crutches) by the end of day 1 and on Tylenol by day 2. We shall see.

  • So a couple of you mentioned about round ligament pain .... which is what was originally thought.

It is not. My OB described it as basically a step up from round ligament pain, but I can't remember the word she used.
Baby's fine. Medical - blood, urine and u/s - came back fine. Both which are good, but OB suggested me seeing a chiropractor. If it works, great. If not, she's pulling me from work beginning of May. She's said it'll get worse once LO drops, and even though my job is mostly sitting {receptionist} it may be just easier.

However, she said that until she can confirm anything about pulling me from work, she wants to ensure we've looked at every road possible for relief.
The pelvic pain was/is from my back, and she's not thrilled it's hurting my pelvis now.

She still said that even if I'm off work, she'd like me to try and keep walking daily. Even if it's a short walk to the mail box - fresh air and movement helps everything else, and going slow will just be easier on me.
  • @MissKittyDanger would definitely consider the chiropractor, even if she does pull you from work. I am still a mess but can only imagine how terrible I'd feel if I wasn't going. I can tell a difference immediately leaving my appointment. I go weekly, but my doctor was on vacation this week and I'm feeling worse just missing 1 appointment, even in ways I hadn't considered aside from back/hip/pelvis. I thought I was crazy because without fail, by day 5 or 6, my headaches would be back, she would adjust me and they'd be gone, until they'd return 5 or 6 days later again. Now I am on like day 11 and I've had headaches every day for the past 4 days. I can't wait to see her on Monday.
  • @MissKittyDanger @amys614 chiropractors can definitely help during pregnancy, but one of the reasons it's not as effective as it would be non-pregnant is because of all the relaxin. Our bodies just have a really hard time "holding" an adjustment when pregnant so sleeping, sitting, just living your life, will likely rather quickly undo what they've done. I'm seeing my osteopath today at 4pm, and I'm so excited for the few hours of relief after even though I know I'll wake up tomorrow with it all undone (I respond very dramatically to relaxin... sigh).
  • @amys614 Yeh I'm giving a couple in my area a call today to see what they offer. Any relief would be ideal. OB mentioned having 1 or 2 appts before we make a decision. She doesn't wanna jump the gun before seeing all options - which in general, I like in a doctor
  • Yes to what @doxiemoxie212 said. The relaxin is the reason I go weekly. Sucks to pay the $50 copay week after week, but at least I get a massage out of it too and feel like a champ for a few days. Plus the weird paralyzing, shooting sciatica nerve thing has stopped all together so that in itself is worth it.

My piriformis muscle has always been an issue, even pre-pregnancy. Both butt cheeks, typical location smack in the middle. Now, I have the same feeling, but towards the outer side, almost to my hip thigh connection, I would say. Anyone else? Need to go look at the anatomy of that muscle and if it stretches over there or if it's something completely new.
  • @amys614 my osteopath said priformis-related issues can be hard to locate the pain for because it tends to be an area that causes "referred pain" where your body just gets confused about where it's coming from. So it might be the same issue just presenting in a weird way. Or it might be new. Or it might be a combo. lol
  • @LaceyBee522 Do you mean you want to be under general anesthesia for your c-section? I've been debating about what I would do if thrown into that situation. I know I've voiced my concerns before here and so many wonderful ladies told me their C's were NBD, but I get so squeamish that I'm not sure what kind of state of mind I'd be in.

  • @amys614 Could it be your SI (sacroiliac) joint? I've been getting killer pains in my lower back/pelvis at night when I go to roll over, it seems to be associated with my aching hips, like everything is attached and getting too loose after resting on that hip/leg for a bit. I mentioned the pain to my SIL this morning who is a doctor and her guess was the SI joint. After Googling a diagram of the pain pathway I think she's spot on.

    BabyFruit Ticker
  • @silvergreen that's the exact map of the pain I have..... but my doctors all think it's SPD, which is maybe related? IDK? What did your SIL say about solutions?
  • Anyone experience a feeling like your heart is racing when laying down in bed? It happened Friday night laying on my left side and tonight it’s happening again. I sit up and it pretty much subsides. Not sure if it’s an anxiety thing or pregnancy related but a little scary nonetheless. Going to go take my BP and see what shows up.

  • @aharv77 yes, it happens when I'm standing sometimes too, or just sitting. I think it's the position the baby gets into. She sometimes will do something that feels like she's stretching from the front to the back of my uterus, sort of like if you try to hold yourself up in a hallway by pressing your back to one side and feet to the other? And the pressure makes my heart race, and makes my neck feel like it's being choked almost? But then she moves and it's fine.
  • @doxiemoxie212 She didn't really offer any solution; just said it was common during pregnancy due to relaxin. I try not to solicit too much medical advice from her since I get the vibe that it often annoys her, lol. :/

  • If you do end up with an epidural, make sure the docs remember to cath you. I realize it was probably 3 am by the time my epidural was done, but I had to remind my nurse to do so.
  • @aharv77 yes! This has been happening to me and as a FTM I’ve been freaking out a little. Every time I go to the doctor though my BP is good and I passed my GD test so Im trying to just drink water, change positions, and take deep breaths when it happens! Just hate not knowing exactly why
  • @amys614 @silvergreen @doxiemoxie212 that is the exact pain I was having that I thought was my sciatic nerve. When I went to the chiro last week he said it was my SI joint. Was able to pin point exactly where my pain was coming from, like literally pushed on it like "does it hurt when I apply pressure here?" and I almost jump off the table. He did an adjustment where I was on my side with my left knee up, basically how I've been sleeping, and rocked back and forth until it popped. It was amazing! I was sore for probably 4-6 hours after that but the next day I felt amazing! It hasn't come back as bad as it was but as @doxiemoxie212 explained with the relaxin, it has come back, but I have a follow up appointment in the morning. 10/10 would recommend!

  • @silvergreen No, I'd prefer not to be totally under for my C-section. I want to hear them when they get pulled out and find out if either of them got my red hair as soon as I can. :)

I just added that notation, because that's what I consider "major" surgery. I've had other "minor" surgeries where I was just given a local and didn't have to be completely under. For my last knee surgery they were supposed to just give me a "spinal" and I'd be in twilight sleep, but the anesthesiologist couldn't get the needle in my spine correctly, so I ended up being put under completely instead.

  • @aharv77 yes! I woke up this morning with it racing. When its racing, yet kind of weak, it makes me so nauseous too. I do my typical vasalva maneuver and chug some water and it was better in about 10 minutes.

@krashke I didn't even think of that. Even though I am all kinds of in love with my chiropractor, I didn't put 2 and 2 together that this new pain has started since I'm behind on my adjustments. I go weekly, but she's on vacation this week. She always adjusts my neck, my back and then lays me on my side with my leg up. Maybe she's been preventing the issue for me. I go on Monday.  Hoping for some magic.
  • @aharv77 Yes for me too! I get a racing heart both lying down and standing up sometimes. It freaks me out too, but like @kellicoptor062018, I passed my GD test and have never gotten a high BP reading, so I try not to worry about it. Usually drinking water helps settle it back down.

    Omg I just started noticing this also! {same as you ladies - no issues}
I figured it's just cuz it takes more effort to do things now
  • +1 to the racing heart, especially when I lay down to go to bed. I try not to get too freaked out by it or when I have palpitations because I figure it's just due to all the extra blood the heart has to pump right now.
  • I get the random racing heart too! I haven't had it as much lately but when I did I asked my OB about it; she said the racing is heart is totally normal and that there's no need to be concerned as long as you don't feel winded.

  • Is anyone else dealing with MEGA leg swelling? For the past two days I’ve had swelling from my feet all the way up to my thighs. It is sort of painful, but very uncomfortable. It goes down a little in the morning, but then my legs feel all weird and tingly.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @LaceyBee522 my foot and ankle swelling has definitely kicked it up a couple notches in the past week or so. Some days I can feel it into my calves a bit. Can you try a warm bath with Epsom salts?

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @2589 I will try that this weekend. I’ve just been elevating as much as I can, but not always possible. I think this is a good excuse for extra foot massage at my next pedicure too.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @LaceyBee522 I've had some swelling to feet, ankles, calves but not that extreme.  I've had to break out my compression/support hose a few times already.  My swelling is always worse if I'm not hydrated enough too.

Probably wouldn't hurt to give your ob a call if you have swelling up to your thighs though, just to be safe.
We are so excited to grow our family!
