Re: Names

@Car0liiine that is horrendous of her to say! And I can’t think of a single name that could ever have that connotation.
  • Options
@Car0liiine I’m sorry your mom responded like that. There’s probably no name on earth that everyone will love so pick what you guys love and go with it. Do you feel like she’d at least have the decency to not criticize after the baby is born?

We told my in laws our name last time, and they hated it-pretty much because they only like simple, traditional, all-American names, which are literally our least favorite. It's OK to name your kids Eric and Brian if you want, but they both had like 5 classmates with the same name as them. No thanks.

We're not decided yet, but we won't be announcing even our top two (we're team green) to pretty much anyone. I don't have patience for arguing with family. Bad enough we're hiding the home birth from them too, lol

@Car0liiine I am right there with you on the struggle bus with family on names.

We told family we are having a boy and we decided on Jake Everett and my lovely 44 year old brother (I feel it is important to know he is a grown ass man) says "his middle name should be 'from State Farm'". And on and on about how he will be teased. Um...seriously....who would think of a stupid ass commercial besides him?!? Maybe I am just hormonal.....but that pissed in my cornflakes a little.

@Asunshinek Yup last pregnancy we told them we liked the name Fletcher and my mom and both brothers (in their 40s) freaked out saying it was a "f*****t name." Because the only Fletcher they knew was gay. . . I flipped out on them for all the reasons.
And the other day my mom also said the didn't like one of our girl names because it "sounded like it could be a black name." (Heaven forbid!) But of course if you told her she was racist she would be oh so offended. I am ready to f***in disown them all.

@Car0liiine wow. No offense, but your family sounds kind of awful. I don’t think they should get any say at all in the names you choose with those kinds of opinions. Good luck! (Also, I think Fletcher is a perfectly fine name if you’re still considering it)
  • Options
@Car0liiine I’m not going to lie, but it is extremely distasteful and off putting that you thought you should type that word and post it here. You could get the point across by using symbols or alluding to the “f word” without using it yourself. Not going to quote you or report it, but that was unnecessary.
  • Options
@spottedginger I'm really sorry, you're right. I second guessed myself and should have gone ahead and changed it but want sure if people would know what weird I meant. I definitely didn't mean to offend anyone. My gay friends use that word and I've never used it in a derogatory way, but I shouldn't assume it's accepted in all circles. Changing it now.

@Car0liiine I agree with @nackie, your family members sound horrible. And racist and homophobic. I can't believe you bother at all.

Dh and I had our first name discussion last night! Feels like a new phase of the pregnancy now that we know she’s a girl. Downside, we couldn’t come up with one name we both really thought was a serious possibility. I’ve had lists going but now nothing fits.

    So suggestions welcome!
Names we both kind of like:
    Makenzie
    McKinley (more Dh)
Keely (I’m not a big fan, but maybe it could grow on me)

Our style: More than one syllable. More of a gender neutral name, not required but I think a totally feminine name would sound weird with DD’s name. DD’s name is originally a boys name that is now firmly in the girl camp. We tend more towards Irish/Scottish/welsh. Tend towards -an -on names(consonant ending)... funny since the current list has none.

    Suggestions ladies?
  • Options
@lcardinal04 I like Makenzie more than McKinley. McKinley reminds me of President McKinley and doesn't strike me as a first name. There's a lot of ways to spell Makenzie (I for instance always want to put a C in it).

    Do you like Quinn?

  • Options
@spottedginger I like Finley as a name but it’s been vetoed because we almost named the dog Finley. He got to keep the Irish name he came with - Sheamus, but DH made the point that it was the dogs name before we felt bad for changing it.

@adirat I like Quinn but for the one syllable. Our last name is a one syllable abrupt sounding name, and so first names with one syllable just have no flow at all.
Yeah I’d put a “c” in Mackenzie too, that was a typo. But we don’t mind last names as first... eg: Reagan was on the list but I don’t like “Rae” as a nickname. DD’s shortened nickname, even though we use her full name 95% of the time, is girly.

Oye, I feel like this was easier with DD.

@Lcardinal04 I know of a McKenna, which I love. Also Kinsey, and  you could always do something like Brennan, or Briannan.

I guess I don't like any of the presidents' last names as first names -- McKinley, Reagan, or Kennedy :(

I like @pourmeamocktail 's suggestion of Brianna, or its versions (Brenna, for instance, sounds very Irish).

A couple other ideas -- Rowan, Piper, Tegan

@lcardinal04 We all have Irish names. Pulling from my family some other options are Ryan, Erin, and Shannon.
  • Options
@adirat I like those Irish ones! Totally
on the list for discussion! Dh saw Keegan on an Irish girl list, and now thinks that’s a girl name.

@pourmeamocktail McKenna is a good one. Thanks! I do also like the nn Bri “Bree” — so another great suggestion there.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!! They are all greatly appreciated.

I’d spell it “Michaela”...like “Michael”...and my biggest problem with that name is everyone spells it differently!

My maiden last name is McKinley and my father's last name is Finley.... I've noticed that both of those names have become popular in the past couple of years... I don't get it. Quinn is also gaining more popularity.. but I do like that one more than the other two.

Here's a name question. We're having twins. My husband and I do not have the same last name, so in addition to deciding on first names for the babies, we're also deciding on last names. I have a 5-syllable last name, so I don't feel like hyphenating is a good option. We talked about the possibility of giving both babies my last name as their middle name and my husband's last name as their last name. Then we could almost use it like a hyphenated name if we want to, but not all the time. Is it weird for siblings to have the same middle name?

My middle name is my mother's last name, but my brother has a different middle name (he's older, and his middle name is my grandfather's name).
  • Options
@iba34 I also think it's a nice idea. Their names will still be connected to your family without the confusion of hyphenating. I don't think middle names get used enough that it would be weird
  • Options
@iba34 - I don't think that's weird at all. I actually think it's a great way to pass on your last name to the babies without giving them long, hyphenated last names.

Thoughts on Augustus?  I wouldn’t have thought it was my style, but DH suggested it last week and I didn’t immediately have a reason to say no to it which is a first. So far it’s the only thing on our list of possible names.
Also, why am I so picky????
  • Options
@nackie I actually really like Augustus. The only reason it got nixed from our possible names is because I don't love the nicknames that tend to come with it. But other people do.
  • Options
@nackie - I think it's a good name assuming you are ok with people calling your kid Gus and/or Auggie.

I like Auggie I’m not a huge fan of Gus, but if he decides he likes it when he’s older, I guess that’s up to him :)

@SkilledSailor Atticus Jude is a solid name

@nackie Augustus immediately made me think of the kid from Willy Wonka, I don't really think that's a bad thing? But something to think about if it bothers you.

@nackie My 2.5 year old's name is August, so I am a fan. We haven't had any issues with people calling him nicknames, although I don't mind Auggie or Gus if he goes by one some day.

@SkilledSailor I love Atticus Jude. Can’t think of any glaring issues. Great choice!

@nackie Augustus is a solid name. Is Auggie the nick name? I can see it being the nn for August but Augustus has a different pronciation, right? Augustus: uh-Gus-tus August: aw-gust. Haha, maybe I’m mispronouncing Augustus.... and totally thinking nicknames.
