@MandyMost I don't recall if i looked it up but we found it in a name book that a friend let us borrow. I know that name wasn't big in the area because the L&D nurse said it was not a name she's heard in a while. My mom is a bus driver in town and when we told her and the other drivers she's friends with they all agreed it wasn't a name they had come across. People ask his name all the time and love it and say they use to know a Nolan back in the day and haven't heard it in a long time. For me it's not so much that it's a common name, I just cannot beleive there could be 4 in his class. I mean, mine is obviously the cutest and most suited for the name but still.
Finally got DH to discuss names with me. We have a list of 3 and I think I know which one I want to go with. It was DH’s least favorite, but I would love to use his favorite as a middle name so I’m hoping he goes for it. He ultimately named DS, so I think I get the final say in this one. We kept it a total secret last time and will again this time.
Ok....so we have finally discussed some names. Our DD name is Jaylee Alyssa and her name we mixed up a lot of family names to come up with that so this time we are attempting to keep it more simple haha. So far we have really only agreed on 1 boy name and 1 girl name and I am still not sure on the girl name....
Boy- Jake Everett Girl- Catherine or Carolyn Grace
Remember...we are in the South and we like Southern names...but honest opinions are welcome
We found out we are team blue, and we have the worst trouble coming up with boy names! We’ve had a girl name for each of these pregnancies (different ones for each) and both of our kids will be boys! It took us almost the entire pregnancy to come up with our son’s name (Seth Richard—the Richard part is in memory of my dad) and we LOVE Seth so now it’s a lot of pressure to come up with a second name that checks all of our boxes like Seth does (short bc our last name is long, classic but not common, isn’t any of the 38459374945832 names of all of our other male relatives bc in Judaism you don’t name people after living relatives and we’ve got a LOT of living male relatives). We’ll see! We’ve got six months to figure it out but I’m definitely watching this board for inspiration.
@Asunshinek I love your names! I'm also in the South and prefer more classic, traditional names (my DD is Grace!) I love the name Catherine and have several friends named Catherine/Katherine (most go by Catie/Katie), but IMO Carolyn Grace "flows" better. I personally prefer names that stand on their own and don't require a nickname, but if you're interested in using a nickname you may want to consider the options with each name and see which you prefer.
Me: 32 DH: 32 BFP #1: 1/23/2012 DD: Born 9/20/2012 BFP #2: 12/30/2017 DS: Due 9/10/2018
Thanks! I also like names that stand alone. I guess now I am just waiting to find out if it is a boy or girl and if it is a boy we are good to go....if its a girl....just will take a little more thought lol
@klj0228 yes!! I really like the name for sure. I guess I feel as though this baby is a boy so I am trying really not to get too caught up in finding a girl name. However, I also know I am terrible at guessing and secretly figure it will be another girl since the girl name is what is undecided for me haha...that is how my life rolls for sure.
@EErin86 It is pretty similar, BUT what do your family members call you? MH and other family members mostly refer to me as "Mommy" when we are around my DD. If that's the case for you, it would probably be fine! I think Maren is really pretty.
Me: 32 DH: 32 BFP #1: 1/23/2012 DD: Born 9/20/2012 BFP #2: 12/30/2017 DS: Due 9/10/2018
@EErin86 My name is Erin too. I love Maren. It’s beautiful! I don’t think it’s too similar. I think it’s a little cutesy to be Maren and Erin - but again she is not going to be calling you Erin so it will be Maren and Mommy or something like that. I did have to tell my husband no to naming our son Aaron already!
So jealous so many of you have names picked out or names even on lists. I refuse to discuss this topic with DH. For our other two, he tortured me. He wanted very Italian sounding names - like Salvatore, Vincent, Marco, Antonio. Our two kids are blonde with blue eyes and we have a very Italian last name. Now he wants very plain names. He wants Michael, which I like, but feel like there are a lot of Michaels in the world. As a Sarah, I grew up 1 of 4 in my class. I always longed to be a Jennah or a Bridget. Something a little different.
I like Julian for a boy. Or maybe Matthew Thomas (my brothers' names combined).
For a girl, I have so many loves, but lately have tended to like boyish names. Taylor is cute, I think.
@EErin86 Personally, yes, I think Erin and Maren are very close, but whether you care depends on how people will use it. Namely, your daughter won't call you by your first name, so it won't seem strange to her. But does your husband use Erin or "Mom" when talking to you in front of your kids? That could get confusing.
Thanks for the advice! I think Maren will stay on the list for now. We typically don't share the names we pick until it's official and I have a few friends having babies before me. DHs cousin used the name we liked right before us last time so I've been on edge about it this time.
@magnolia209 hahaha at least you know he likes the sound of your name!
@sarahlynn72181 DH seriously pulled hard for DS to be Giuseppe. And we have a very obvious Italian last name. Meanwhile, the kid is only about 30 something percent Italian. Needless to say, he didn’t win that one.
I’ve crushed hard on Sophia for a girl for a long time, years before it became popular. DH likes it too (again, the whole Italian thing), but I feel terrible giving a kid a top ten name. I grew up as “First name, last initial” my whole childhood because I was given the #1 name of my birth year. It’s not fair...I liked it first! This may be a nonissue anyway if it’s a boy (in which case he will never get named because we don’t agree on anything!)
Bridget is my favorite girl name right now. I have quite a few girls names on a list but struggling with boys names. Maybe I’ll luck out and it will be girls, creating a non-issue for naming... however if it’s boys - one name is hard, let alone two!

For a boy I would really like to find a way to honor our grandfathers. My grandpa passed away last week and DH was really close to his grandpa before he passed 10 years ago. I think it would be an awesome way to show our love for them.

@eerin86 I know a few people that didn't use a name that they were planning on because someone else did. If I were you, I wouldn't let that stop you. no one owns a name, and if anyone has a problem that you used it.. well, that's on them.
My mom gave me this whole talk about how when she was pregnant, everyone around her kept telling her what to do and pushing their advice/opinions, and it made her stressed and upset, but after that is when she really learned to stand up for herself. Ten minutes later: I told her the name DH and I were planning and she grimaced. It was his grandfather’s name and I had agreed because it’s a simple classic name that I like. Well apparently, it’s very catholic! My family is Jewish (not religious but by ethnicity) and my mom thought the name was too catholic. Well, now I’m stressed and upset! Big surprise, thanks mom!
@CSchoFink I’m reading this thread but haven’t contributed because we are also Jewish and superstitious af. My DS is named for my dad too. I’m sorry for your loss DD is named for two great grandmas. I’m sure if we’re lucky enough to name another child we will also just dig back and name after family. It’s extra difficult to name differently. I don’t know if it helps or not but there is a guideline for there having to be a living mutual grandparent to make it prohibited. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t name the same first name but middle names for 3rd cousins etc. are fair game.
@Redpuma119 see and that's exactly what I thought at first. We were going to go with Leila but then I met his cousins baby and associated the name with her and no one in DHs family could figure out how to pronounce and I love the name we ended up with. So I guess it all worked out. Fortunately my bff is looking at Norwegian names, and our other friends like old lady names (totally nms)
I love all the names I've seen in this thread so far. So cool that many people chose family names. Ours are based on comic books and cartoons. Spreading the nerd genes onto future generations. No idea what the sex is yet so Boy: Miles Parker Girl: Mabel Rose
@Wishilivedinflorida Sophia is a great name. I had the same issue with my first born - Jake. Loved that name for 10 years, but thanks to Twilight movies/ books, everyone was naming their kids Jake and Bella. Still, I don't regret it. He's the only Jake in his kindergarten class and the name fits him. Maybe you'll feel the same?
Giuseppe not so much (heheh).
@BostonBaby1 Thanks! I tried it out on DH again this week and he cringed. Darn!
@EErin86@magnolia209 I also love the name Maren! I wouldn't recommend siblings Erin and Maren but I think mother/daughter is OK. Side question. What do you think about alliterative first and last name combos. I really like Maren but my last name starts with an M (rhymes with Hayes). Do you think that first and last name combo sounds odd?
@jaylii I think it’s a personal preference. I think some people love alliteration and some hate it. I’m not a huge fan of alliteration, but I love some of the first names that begin with the same letter as our last name. We’ll see if love of the name wins. Maren is a great name!
@jaylii I like some alliteration. I also think it's rare that we use our full names other than like the first week of school or being introduced in a professional setting for the first time. So basically, if it's a name you love I would still strongly consider it.
@jaylii I also think it's personal preference. A name like Maren Mays would sound fine to me but might bother other people. I suggest saying it out loud for a week to see if you like it
Feelings on alliteration are definitely personal preference and no one's feelings on it matter but your own. MH loves the name Holly for a girl, but our last name starts with an H and I could never do it. But other people have loved the combo when they heard it.

@lcardinal04@skilledsailor@eerin86@danytargaryen Thanks for the opinions! I think I'm OK with the Maren and my last name combo because the sounds in each name are different. Some alliteration works for me, some doesn't. Examples of alliteration not working with my last name: Maris and Molly (sounds like Molly maids, ha) with my last name.
Now I have to see if my husband likes it (and if we're even having a girl). For a long time we were settled on the name Eleanor. MH still loves it but I'm feeling unsettled/liking it less. I do like the nns Ellie, Elle, Ella, Nell but I'm concerned that Ellie especially is super popular right now. I think I'm liking Eleanor less because it seems hard to pronounce.
It took us until about 30 weeks to decide on DS's name - Benjamin Cole - and it was TOUGH. Now I've gone ahead and doubled our work by being team green, haha. My current favorites, though they are changing every week are: Girl - Amelia, Sadie, Virginia, and Ella. Boy - Henry, Griffin, and Wells.

@yogapants247 I LOVE Amelia and Wells. I like all your names but those are my favorites. We had Amelia on our list but it ends the same way H's last name starts and was too much of a tongue twister.
So lately I’ve been toying with Brooke Anna for a girl, but, I like having an explaination for why we chose a name...and Anna is the name we always intended to use for a second girl, but my SIL just named her daughter Annie. ...in spite of us having a conversation in order to avoid conflicts...pretty sure she lied to my face. Nope, I’m not bitter.
Anna is also the name of some of our fav of dd’s docs, so we were kinda extra excited to use it. Although, now that I’m thinking about it, one of them is Ana short for Anastasia. I do like longer vowel-y middle names w short simple first names. Dd is Kate Elizabeth. Our last name is Czech, odd spelling and pronunciation, so short and simple first names are important to us.
My biggest issue w it is I don’t trust myself when someone asks why we chose her name to not say “because sil stole the one we wanted”.

@jhjocelyn I would be sorely tempted to say that if people asked! We shared our baby name ideas long before we got pregnant and a close friend *almost* named her child our top boy name at the time. Looking back, I kind of think she was pulling our leg but at the time I was pissed.
All that said, I think using a longer form of Anna for the middle name would still work. Especially since she would go by Brooke (I'm assuming). I live in the south so Annabelle is popular here.
@jhjocelyn I really like Brooke Anna/Anastasia and think it's cute. After DHs cousin "stole" our secret name we ended up picking something we liked better anyways. Though I have the awkward line of, oh we found her name on the internet and just liked it
