@starla@adirat@runninginva thanks! I will run those by DH. Also that's a cool website! DH and I need to decide if we will be done at 2 or not. If yes and we have a girl I feel like he would like a name remembering his grandpa, otherwise I have a totally monopoly on middle names
@mauishay I’m with you on liking a name one day and then not so much a few days later. Of the ones you listed, I like Leila best.
Right now the only two names that I still like enough to consider are both in the top 10 list of popular names. We really, really wanted a name that wasn’t super popular though. I don’t remember it being this hard the first time around

One of the names MH loves has been top 10 for a LONG time. I originally said no to it because I have an uncle with the same name, but now I find myself considering it since we would most certainly use a different nickname than my uncle goes by.
One of the other names I suggested is also top 10 so apparently I like more common names.
On the plus side, according to the SSA list from 2017, even the #1 name was used for less than 1% of male births that year. I think you're more likely to run into many kids with a name that is jumping up the list as opposed to one that has been a top choice for a while.

@danytargaryen makes a good point about the absolute frequency being low even if it's on the top 10. There's much more name diversity now than there was when we or our parents were born. Also, if you're worried, consider checking the stats for your state -- some names common in certain states (Liam comes to mind) aren't nearly as common in other states.
@adirat both names we like are pretty popular in our area according to the state list. One (Oliver) is ranked 14 for our state, but we know like 6 of them under the age of 5. The other (Benjamin) is ranked 4 for our state, but we haven’t actually encountered any little Bens. So that one is in the lead for now, but it’s ranking is still making me uncertain and unwilling to commit.
@nackie I'm pretty sure Oliver is our only boy contender at this time, but it's nowhere near top 10 for our state and we know none in any close or remote social circles. I do have other names I like, but that's the only one DH likes as well.
#1 for only liking popular names, but I feel I've liked the names I like for years before they got so popular, so it makes me kind of sad.
@franklynns I think Charlotte is a nice, feminine, classic. And I have always thought the gender bending nicknames Charlie and even Chuck are super cute. I'm also partial because it's one of my great aunts' names; they are/were Ruth, Hazel, Charlotte and Elise. I just love all those names as sisters. (Their brother was Hugh and other sister, my grandmother's name was Alwayne. She was named by her little sister who at the time was very sick with polio if I remember correctly.)
@franklynns I think Charlotte is a great name! Might be a little popular right now but it's classic and not trendy. Charlie for a nickname is fine, she can always change it up when she's school age
@franklynns - I like Charlotte. Like others said it's popular, but not trendy, so while it's at the top of the list I don't think you'll suddenly run into a ton of other Charlottes. Any boost from Will and Kate is probably on a decline by now and it's a nice classic name.
I see no issue with a masculine nickname. I would think written or introductions would generally use Charlotte, which clearly sets she's a girl, then you can use Charlie as you like. That's what I would do anyway.

I think we're back to the drawing board for a middle name I haven't wanted to post any names here but I'm over that. We're going with James, after DH's grandfather. We need an R name for a middle because I'd like to use the letter to name him after my grandmother and DH's mother who have both passed. The problem is that I really don't like any R names. We had sort of decided to just do what we want and go with Rex, but now DH is having second thoughts bc everyone says we need two syllables. (Last name two syllables). When I first mentioned James to my mom she upset me by saying that it was "too Catholic" (my family is non-religious but jewish). So when DH saw how upset I was, he started looking into Jewish R names and came up with Rael, which I think I like but I'm not sure. Any other possibilities that are rare and I may not have thought of? I've heard all the standard R's and I just don't really like them!
@Redpuma119 yes I think it would be Ry-ell or ray-ell, I have to research further haha
@ellbeedee I’ve always loved the name Ryan also. Like it was on my list of baby names that I would make when I was little haha. I’m so stuck on my mom’s “that’s so catholic!” reaction and I’m afraid she’ll say that again with Ryan
I'm still team Rex! (I'm also team your mom, or anyone else, doesn't get to name your kid. Also, they will love any name you choose once they start associating that name with your adorable baby. That's just how it works )
@ash2018, You've probably already thought of Robert and Richard, but I'll just put those out there. And I totally get the whole "too catholic" or "too Christian" names as I am also Jewish, and wanted to come up with a Jewish name. Definitely limits things. Rael sounds very Jewish to me, as does Raffi (not sure how to spell that) but not in a bad way. My husband really wanted our son's middle name to be Reuben. It just wasn't my first choice. Good luck! Our son's middle name is going to be Robert, after my grandfather.
@ashh2018 I like Rael, that seems like a good way to incorporating your Jewish heritage. But Ryan is also a great name that doesn’t seem super catholic (whatever that means). I suggested Ryan for us, but DH vetoed it.
@ashh2018 I like Rael a lot! But Rex is also cute. I definitely don't think if Ryan as Catholic. Pretty sure it's Gaelic and I don't think it was used in the Bible, New or Old Testament. Fffc I have an idea for a 2 syllable R name but I'm not sharing it because it's our top choices right now.
Vae is my grandmas middle name and we were already pretty set on that. We had a few names we were thinking about for a first, Bobbi just started feeling right.
When my my son started talking he would say Bobbi over over and over again. There were months where he would say Bobbi 50+ times a day. My husband likes that her nickname can be Bo because that use to be my nickname. And when we told my husbands mom that we were thinking Bobbi for a name, she told us that his grandmas nickname use to be Bob/Bobbi.
We are still having a hard time picking out a name. So far we like Weston Winston Harrison and Bransen. Weston was our top pick but my cousin/friend is naming her son Easton.
@shaybug12 it if that list I do like Weston best. Did you plan on using Wes as a nickname? Even if both boys go by their full first names I think it's pretty cute as babies and will be a cool story when they are older
@EErin86 yes that was going to be his nickname. It doesn't bother me that much that there names will be similar but DH is afraid that people are going to think we are just copying them (we are not I had it picked out for a while and then we told each other our names we had picked out and we laughed about it). I just got to talk him into it and it hasn't worked yet lol.
I cannot believe I am this far along (31 wks tomorrow) without a 100% name. I’ve known he’s been a boy since 11 wks! I think we are now 95% sure. I’ve felt the whole time his name needs to be Peter (I don’t know why! It’s like something is telling me it needs to be!) but DH hasn’t always been on board. He just told me he’s now liking it! So now the trouble of the middle name.... I have a list of like 20 I like! Why is this so much tougher for me than when we named our now-6 year old boy?!
Just read through all 11 pages and still don’t have an inkling of what to name this kid if it’s a boy. (Team Green here)
I’ll be 35 weeks on Monday and we’ve got a couple girl options but still no boy contenders. Needless to say, this is convincing me that baby is a boy.
DS is Donald (Donnie) DD is Elizabeth (Lizzy)
We had their names picked before we ever even started TTC. This third kid is throwing us for a loop. Add to it that we’re Team Green this time, and we’re really SOL. We like more traditional/ classic names. Nothing trendy.

Boys names are so much harder, I feel. @JLyn821 Elane is so pretty. @mrsPNW My husband loves Peter since it's a family name. His cousin we all call Petey. I think it's cute! @shaybug12 Weston and Easton are two very different names in my book. Funny tho that the nicknames could be west and east. You better line them up in group photos accordingly:-) @ashh2018 you can't go wrong with Rex or Ryan. Two adorable middles!
Lately, Brynn has been my favorite girls name. DH only likes traditional names, so I think he'll end up with a veto. Do you ladies like it?
For a boy, Mason is suddenly on the top of my list. It checks off all my criteria. Is it weird that we do know another couple who named their son Mason, who weekends in our town and we sometime hang out with. They are friends, but not super close. DH's grandfather and uncles were Italian Masons. They came over from Italy and di the most amazing brick work in our town. I love that this name is a nod to that heritage.
Re: Names
Ariel: heart of a lion.
Aria
Leanna: Lioness
Lenna: Lioness
So far these are what we’re thinking:
Leila
Maxine
Josie
Bobbi
but it feels like I like them one day and the just aren’t sure the next. Middle name will most likely be Vae

Charlie as a nickname.
Do you think that name is too popular right now? Do you think having a predominantly boy name for a girl is bad?
