Re: Weekly Randoms (week of 2/12)

  • @kfren that makes me so mad. We're so rigorous about our research on pet food, but it shouldn't have to be that way. We should be able to trust that foods available for pet consumption are safe, at the very least.
  • Loading the player...
  • @doxiemoxie212 You're right, you shouldn't have to research. It's disgusting.
This made me think of an article I read a few weeks ago about kid's makeup being tainted with asbestos. WTF?!?!?!
  • @krashke ugh now I'm down the same rabbit hole trying to decide if I want to buy the 2017 vista right this very instant. I really liked the gregory color for 2018, but I'm not sure I can justify that for $180, especially since my second choice (henry) is almost identical from photos online. Siiiiigh...
  • @doxiemoxie212 it's so hard to choose! I haven't pulled the trigger yet but I imagine they are trying to get rid of the 2017 stock so it might not be available at that price for much longer. We have always talked about the Jake color (all black everything) but now I am considering the Taylor because it would be even cheaper and I am concerned that the black color on the frame on the Jake will just scratch off anyway.

  • @krashke I originally liked the black, but decided I wanted a non-black stroller in case we stay in NYC so it's easier to find at places where we have to sort of drop the stroller off if that makes sense. I always see these mountains of black strollers and it just reminds me of all the times I have to find MY black umbrella or something in a sea of black umbrellas lol. Probably not an issue at places with cars.
  • @krashke @doxiemoxie212 Y'all are better people than me. I'm waiting to do my BBB registry until the 2018 Vistas and Mesas are out, so I can register for those. I have not good reason, just me wanting whatever is shiny and new.

  • @LaceyBee522 knowing my family and how much people usually spend for babies I highly doubt that someone or even a group of people would buy us the Vista so I figure we're going to have to pay for it regardless and I would rather pay $600 than $900. Also, I feel like it is a bit more justified for you since you're having twins lol.

I have looked at some used ones on FB Marketplace but it's hard to find them from after 2014 and that is when they changed the configuration of the two seats so that they could both face forward. Prior to 2014 the could only face each other.

  • @krashke also some of the older colors are .... weird

@krashke but if you (or anyone else reading this) don't care about strange colors, you should check out Albee Baby. It's a baby store here in NYC, but it has free shipping everywhere. They have the 2015/2016s in two colors for $549/$527: https://www.albeebaby.com/uppa-baby-vista-strollers.html
  • @doxiemoxie212 @krashke the reason I waited for the 2018 was because they made the back wheels narrower to fit through tighter spaces and the bassinet is longer to accommodate the baby longer as well - those were valuable to me to justify an already high expense.  I was going to get the Gregory color and wait for the Jordan mesa car seat to come out in March but I got impatient so I got the Henry car seat and the Henry vista is arriving today.  I'm pretty excited for it.  I saw the Henry on display at my BBB and it's a super pretty color.  Agreed that the older colors are strange.  I actually love the new Emmett but stuck with the blue.
  • @doxiemoxie212 yeeeeahhh I might pay a little more to get a more neutral color but that yellow or fuchsia would stand out in a sea of black strollers.

  • ugh @krashke I just tried making a fake registry under my mom's Amazon account, and it still won't give me the completion discount until March 2 (even with a due date of today). In the time since I started to when I finished doing that the number of 2017 vistas in the henry color dropped from 5 to 4. So... not sure it's wise to wait until March 2 to order? Admittedly there are a few other stores I could order from. Will probably order from Albee Baby since I can get points there, at least, and it might be easier to return if needed since there's a physical store here in the city. IDK.
  • July's discussion on abdominal muscle spasms is getting interesting, if you're bored and want to lurk. :)
Lol it's ironic that came up, I've had a few muscle spasms. Other day one boobs was spazzing :') wtf
  • Sorry I have been super swamped at work lately and DD is not sleeping- so I am not sleeping- which is making everything I do take 100% longer.  I'm happy I have more work on my desk, but need to balance it better which is unlikely while I'm getting a whopping 5 hours of sleep spread throughout the night.  @kfren I completely feel you today- so ready for today to be over and be able to nap when DD naps throughout the day this long weekend.

@doxiemoxie212 that is a crazy amount of page likes... but everyone needs that crazy FB friend. I also know someone that has an obscene amount of FB page likes- but he works in social media- so it's his job.  Sounds like she is not involved in social media- if she is only liking every random page she sees.

@MissKittyDanger sorry I didn't get back to you on Lucie's List, but it looks like others helped you.  Honestly- don't worry so much about your registry- talk to your mom friends/ family members and look at the registry guides.  They will give you an idea of what you could be missing- but if you don't think you will use it- than don't clutter your house with it.  Trust me you will buy enough random cr@p after the baby arrives.

I'm so jealous of the Vista talk.  I just cannot justify it.  I think I may justify the Halo bassinest though- having been up all night for the past month has made me appreciate anything that will help me stay in bed for the days/weeks/months that little man will be up all night.

  • @doxiemoxie212 dang! so far there's no count down on the Jake but they are going fast. I did play with my due date and changed it to 4/16/2018 and was eligible for the completion discount and it is good for 4 months basically 60 prior to the estimated arrival and 60 days after the estimated arrival so we would still be able to use it until 6/14/2018 which is just about my actual due date so I'm assuming I would use it by then anyway. But I would have to do everything else I want the discount on in one order because you only get two.

  • @krashke I'm buying it from Albee Baby, and then I'm going to return it to Albee Baby if it's still available on Amazon on March 2nd because it'd be an additional $108 savings. So, we'll see how this goes lol.
  • @doxiemoxie212 that's a good plan. At least you're still saving $ on the 2017 vs the 2018 even if its no longer available on 3/2. I texted MH trying to convince him. He gets his bonus on 3/2 so he wants to wait until then but we can just put it on a credit card now and pay it off when he gets his bonus and not pay interest and not risk them selling out.

  • Baby has the hiccups in there for the first time today. Such a funny feeling! I remember DD1 first having them at 26 weeks so not too far off this time.

  • @Austenista Try not to be angry with yourself. I used to always have a rapport with the kids in DH's family that no one else seemed to have because I played with them in ways that nobody else in his family would. It was awesome. Then I had my own, and I feel completely different about playing. I think, for me, a big part of it is being older and the fact that momming can be exhausting.  Take it easy on yourself. While I don't know every mom, I feel pretty confident that you are so not the worst!
  • @krashke I love the Dennison color. Yay!!

@Austenista I wouldn't be too hard on yourself. Youre giving huge needs too; love in the form of hugs and cuddles.  I'm only 20 min into Bringing up Bebe but she has already alluded to the fact that French mom's let their kids toddle and learn to play on their own. Again, no idea what's coming of this book yet, but there's that. Not gonna lie, I think feeling grabby hands in there maaaaay freak me out a bit. I'm still on the fence about the movement in general. Of course I worry when I don't feel it, but I am definitely not on the train of "oh that's the best part of pregnancy" PS--you are not ridiculous!
  • @Austenista hugs! You are not a bad mom for not liking to play. I hate it too, and it’s just not my cup of tea. Being a mom is super demanding - hang in there and try not to beat yourself up <3

  • +1 Bringing Up Bebe. Half way through and thoroughly enjoying it. I actually happened to read this part last night and thought it was worthwhile sharing:

In France, the dominant social message is that while being a parent is very important, it shouldn't subsume one's other roles. Women I know in Paris express this by saying that mothers shouldn't become "enslaved" to their children.

Also, in the beginning of the book there is a short glossary of French parenting terms of which the first is:

attend (ah-tahn) - wait, stop. A command that a French parent says to a child. "Wait" implies that the child doesn't require immediate gratification, and that he can entertain himself.

I'm a FTM so I have no idea if this is all really easier said than done, but at least it strips the guilt a little bit to know that other kids aren't being 100% catered to and they're growing up just fine.

  • @silvergreen DH and I loved bringing up Bebe. And I think it’s really empowering to think about your role as a parent being to teach your kids patience, how to deal with frustration, and how to fit into your family’s routine. It’s a subtle shift in perspective, but I think that framework will help me cope during tough times more than if I thought my job was to make my kids life wonderful.
  • I dislike playing with my kids too. My 5yo is both bossy and needy. It's an age thing, but it drives me up the wall. She's currently crying on the couch because I told her she needed to wait to have hot chocolate, because I'm trying to do other stuff. I've never catered to her, never jumped at her every command, it just comes with the age.
Makes me feel like a crap parent because she cries all the time, but I'm not going to give in just because she's crying.
  • @doxiemoxie212 I agree! I always kind of worried about losing myself when becoming a mother. Now I realise it doesn't be have to be that way, and it actually builds resilience in kids that make for a happier adult (The Danish Way of Parenting stresses this also). Sounds like a guilt-free win-win to me! Now just to see it I can actually put it into practice...

  • @May14th2011 Yep, that's why I figured as a FTM is might sound a little too easy and that putting it into practice might be tougher than it sounds. But kudos to not giving in! Not to compare dogs to kids, but it's kind of the same conditioning. Ignoring the undesirable behaviour (should) eventually eliminate it (by way of extinction).

  • @MoonOverGoldsboro on amazon in the reviews for the vista there are a few people talking about how they bought it for their cat and their cat loves it
  • @doxiemoxie212 @MoonOverGoldsboro that's a riot! My cat is definitely *extra* (aren't they all?!) but if I'm not willing to front that money for a stroller for the baby, the cat too, is out of luck.  :D  If he's down for the Graco though....Lol
